Lee looked out the window into the backyard as he sipped his morning coffee. It took him a while to fall asleep but when he did, he slept like a log. The day before had been quite literally lifechanging; his daughter, Jennifer was born! She was 2 weeks late and had everyone on edge waiting for her arrival, Amanda most of all. But staying true to form, it didn't matter if Amanda was 9 or 19 months pregnant. She wouldn't slow down for anything. Lee begged her to stay home and just rest as she was on maternity leave from the agency. But…..not ever doing what she's told to do, Amanda came down to the agency and found herself smack in the middle of a hostage situation. Thankfully, it was quickly resolved but not before she had gone into labor and had to be escorted out of the building and driven to the hospital. Lee didn't even remember driving to the emergency room. His mind was so worried about Amanda and having to tolerate seeing her in pain. Once they got to the hospital, Lee was told to put on some scrubs because the baby would be arriving within the hour. So much for a long labor. As he was changing, Amanda was rushed to the OR for an emergency C-section. Jenny had tied a knot in her umbilical cord and had to be delivered quickly. Before he knew it, he was being handed his brand new, tiny daughter. He instantly fell deeply in love like he had never known before.
The ringing phone jolted Lee back to the present.
"Hello!"
"Lee, darling….how are you this morning? Have you talked to Amanda?"
"Hi Dotty. I'm doing well. Took me a while to get to sleep. I was so…I don't know. Ramped up, I guess."
"Oh, well of course you were."
"I haven't talked to Amanda yet. I figured I would let her sleep."
"Sleep?" Dotty said with a chuckle. "Oh, Lee. I'm sure she's been up for a while now. That baby has got to be hungry!"
Lee felt a little foolish that he hadn't thought about that. Of course she had been up! Only Amanda could feed Jenny.
"I guess you're right! I hope she was able to sleep for at least part of the night."
"Don't worry dear. That first night, they only bring the baby into the mothers to feed them. Then they take them back to the nursery so the mothers can rest. But from then on be prepared to be up several times a night."
Lee ran his hand through his hair at the thought of his daughter, the tiny human alarm clock, waking up every few hours.
"Yeah, so I've been told."
"Don't worry, Lee dear. It's completely worth it! When are you headed over to the hospital?"
"Visiting hours start at 9:00, so I will be leaving pretty soon."
"Are the boys up yet?"
"No, I was about to go wake them when you called."
"Well, why don't you let them sleep. Harry and I can pick them up on our way to see Amanda and the baby. That way the three of you can have some time together."
"Thanks, Dotty. I appreciate that.
"Of course, my dear. And…Harry and I have a little surprise for you and Amanda!"
"Oh?"
"Yes! Just you wait!"
Lee smiled and let out a soft laugh.
"Ok, we will be looking forward to it."
"Alright, I will let you go. We will see you later. Let the boys know we will get them about 11:00."
"Sounds good. Drive safely."
"You, too dear."
Lee hung up the phone and shook his head. He knew exactly what the surprise was. Harry had asked Dotty to marry him, and she said yes! A granddaughter and a fiancé all in the same day! Lee was surprised that Dotty hadn't exploded from joy. He put his coffee cup in the sink, wrote a quick note to the boys, grabbed his keys and headed out to the hospital to see his wife and daughter.
