Eddie stood just outside the door to the trauma room looking in through the window. Her eyes widened as she saw the doctor she heard one of the nurses call Reagan take Sierra's baby out of her. She knew that blood was normal during birth. But she'd never seen a C-section up close and personal before. Even though she was 50 feet outside a door with a window seeing in. She grew worried as he handed off the baby to a nurse and she began rattling words off to him that she didn't understand. Sighing, Eddie looked down at her feet.
Her tour had ended nearly half an hour ago, but she really didn't feel like going back to the precinct and changing. Or going home for that fact. She wanted to stay here. Hell, she needed to stay here to find out if Sierra and her baby would be ok. Her hat under her left arm, Eddie moved out of the way as a group of nurses and Doctor Reagan came out of the trauma room. He managed to look back at her as he went down the hallway.
"Officer Janko? What are you still doing here? I thought you'd left hours ago."
He pushed the button on the elevator and walked towards Eddie. He turned his attention back to the nurse for a moment.
"Have Doctor Anderson check Sierra's vitals in 30 minutes."
The nurse shook her head as the other two doctors and a few nurses pushed the stretcher into the elevator.
"He's on vacation in Boca until the end of next week."
Jamie snapped his fingers and looked back at the nurse.
"Doctor Stevenson then."
Shaking her head again, the nurse answered.
"Can't. His wife is sick with Pneumonia."
Jamie became slightly irritated but remained calm and levelheaded.
"Doctor Ericson then."
The nurse once again shook her head for the third time.
"He quit last week. You're the doctor on-call Doctor Reagan."
Nodding, Jamie relented and went towards the elevator. He gave his apologies to Eddie.
"I'm sorry Officer Janko. I'll be with you as soon as I can."
Eddie nodded and got in a word before the elevator doors closed in front of her.
"It's ok. I'm off duty and I don't work tomorrow. I'm not going anywhere."
Eddie stepped away from the elevator doors and went out into the waiting room. Having a seat, she picked up a magazine and started flipping through it. Before long, she found herself nodding off. It wasn't until almost 40 minutes later that she'd fallen asleep. She felt someone's hand on her shoulder. Opening her eyes, she found she was looking straight into green eyes of one Doctor Reagan.
"Hey. Sorry I took so long Officer Janko. I had to make sure Sierra was stable. Then I went to check on the baby."
Eddie wiped the sleep from her eyes and sat up straighter.
"How is Sierra? How is the baby?"
Jamie nodded and sat down next to Eddie.
"Sierra is stable and resting up on the fourth floor. Her daughter is in the NICU. She's going to spend the next month in there. Until her lungs mature. They weren't fully developed. She's a fighter though. I'll give her that."
Eddie sat back and sighed.
"I've delivered a few babies, but I've never seen a C-section up close and personal like that. How do you deal with that much blood every day?"
Jamie gave a smirk and leaned forward.
"You learn to take everything in stride. You must see a lot of blood too. I've only ever heard stories from other police officers. I haven't worked in the ER in at least three years. I used to see a lot of gunshot wounds. It was always hard to tell the family that their loved one wasn't going to make it. It's why I chose to bring babies into the world. 99 percent joy, and only 1 percent loss and grief. Was there anything else I can update you on?"
Eddie shook her head no and got to her feet.
"No. I just wanted to make sure mom and baby were ok. Listen, I'm gonna, uh go. Thanks for the update."
Eddie made a quick exit from the hospital. When she reached the outside of the emergency room doors to the outside world, she shook her head and kicked a tiny rock with her foot off the curb.
"What the hell was that Janko?"
Walking away from the hospital, she realized she was going to have to find a way to get back to the precinct.
