"Lower your gun and let the woman go! Now!"
Eddie could feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She and her partner Officer Amanda Stevenson had a man who was 6 feet and 8 inches tall and 280 pounds holding a woman who was 6 months pregnant hostage cornered in a small bodega. The man shook his head.
"No! She's hiding the crystal shard! I need it!"
Eddie took a slow breath in and let it out. Great. An EDP. Just what Stevenson and I need at end of tour. The woman spoke up in a shaking voice.
"I don't know what he's talking about! I don't have any crystal shard! Please let me go!"
The man lunged for the pregnant woman's phone in her hand and shoved her to the ground. Eddie stayed with her while her partner Officer Stevenson took the large man down with the help of several other officers and handcuffed him.
"I only have half the crystal! Where's the other one! I know she has the other half!"
The paramedics came into the store and quickly got to Eddie and the woman. Eddie squeezed her hand as the paramedics carefully lifted her onto the stretcher.
"You're going to be ok Mayra. The paramedics are going to take you to the hospital to get you and your baby checked out. Everything's going to be ok."
Mayra nodded squeezed Eddie's hand again.
"Thank-you Officer Janko."
Eddie gave Mayra a sympathetic smile and then looked at the paramedics.
"What hospital are you taking her to?"
The paramedic on the left side of the stretcher responded as he gave Mayra some oxygen.
"We're taking her to King's General."
Eddie nodded and moved out of the way so the paramedics could exit the bodega. She let out a breath and clapped a hand on her partner's shoulder.
"That could've ended badly. Thanks Amanda. It's always so sad responding to EDP calls. Let's get back to the precinct."
Amanda smirked at Eddie as they got into their RMP.
"Yeah? Where are you going afterwards?"
Eddie rolled her eyes and stared straight ahead as Amanda put the car into gear and pulled away from the curb.
"To check on Rosie…"
Amanda gave chuckle and looked over at Eddie as she pulled up to a red light.
"Uh huh. Ok. Excuses Eddie. The real reason you're going to Saint Vic's. Come on spit it out…"
Eddie gave Amanda an annoyed sigh.
"Ok fine. I'm going to see Doctor Reagan ok?"
Amanda kept the smirk on her face.
"You do realize that's the Commissioner's son, don't you?"
Eddie gave a slight laugh.
"Of course, I do Amanda. What's the big deal?"
Amanda let out a laugh as the light turned green.
"You have no idea what you're getting into Janko. Be careful."
Eddie rolled her eyes and shook her head.
"We haven't even gone out on a date."
Amanda gave another laugh as they headed back to the 12th precinct.
"Sure."
Eddie had been standing at one of the windows to the nursery looking in at all the newborn babies for a few minutes now. She hadn't noticed Jamie come up next to her. She turned only when she heard his voice.
"Eddie. What are you doing up here?"
Eddie smiled.
"Sometimes after a really difficult day, I like to come up here and remind myself of how beautiful life is. You know, take a step back and just savor the moment."
Jamie smiled and stepped a little closer to her.
"Well, I'll let you in on a little secret Eddie. I know for a fact that you've been coming up here every day after tour to visit these babies. For the last month."
Eddie looked at Jamie and gave a small smile.
"There's kind of a reason behind that."
Jamie could take a hint.
"I've had kind of a rough day too. Want to got have a couple of beers? I know a great bar a couple of blocks away."
Eddie smiled and nodded.
"I'd like that."
Jamie nodded and led her towards the elevator.
"Great. Let me just go get changed and we'll head out."
Eddie felt a slight blush come to her face, but it went away after a few seconds. Was this a date? Or just casual drinks with a friend? Eddie wasn't sure which, but she always felt this strange and intense pull on her soul every time she was around him. Almost like she'd known him her entire life.
