Jamie felt like he was on cloud nine. All the deliveries he'd done today had gone smoothly. He was in a good mood, and he wasn't going to let anything ruin it. His face fell as he walked into the next patient's room. Lying in the bed currently battling with a contraction was his ex. Sydney. He held in a nervous laugh and went over to the sink to wash his hands.
"Sydney. It's nice to see you again. How long has it been?"
Sydney was out of breath and answered him.
"Jamie? Oh my god. What are the odds?"
Sydney's husband Jeremy looked back and forth between the two.
"How do the two of you know each other?"
Jamie smiled as he grabbed for a pair of gloves and a mask.
"We knew each other a long time ago. Down to business."
Sandy and Mara helped Sydney put her feet up. She was just ready to get her son out of her. Jamie swallowed the awkwardness he was feeling and looked Sydney in the eye.
"Ok. You're at 10 centimeters and fully effaced. On the next contraction I want you to push ok? Not too hard. After the baby's head is out, push hard ok?"
Sydney looked at Jamie and nodded, but then looked up at her husband Jeremy with scared eyes.
"I don't know about this Jeremy. I don't know if I can do this. I just want Cooper out of me. Jamie can't you just do a C-section?"
Jamie shook his head at Sydney and focused his attention on the task in front of him, safely bringing her little boy into the world.
"Only if your son were in serious trouble. Which he is not at the moment. You're doing great Syd. Give me another push. Come on now. I know you can do it."
Sydney nodded and gave another push. She'd forgotten what it was like to hear that handsome voice. It always made her feel calm and safe. Mara and Sandy both looked at Jamie and frowned behind their masks. It was Mara who spoke first.
"Doctor Reagan, you might need this."
Jamie glanced up momentarily at the instrument in Mara's hands.
"I've got this under control. I don't think we'll be needing those forceps."
Mara nodded at Jamie and placed the instrument back onto the tray to the left of him. His face paled as more blood kept coming. His mind was in overdrive. He was losing them both.
Jamie was numb. Everything around him was a blur as he made his way towards the admit desk where Eddie was waiting for him. He managed to give her a tight smile and wrapped his left arm over her shoulder. She could see he was distraught, but she didn't want to push him. At least not here.
"Hey babe. Let's go home."
Eddie opened her mouth to say something, but only silence came out. Instead, she closed her mouth and they walked out of the hospital together. She drove the both of them back to their apartment because he was in no condition to right now. One they arrived inside their apartment, Jamie pulled Eddie into his arms and started raining kisses down the right side of her neck.
Eddie tilted her neck up slightly and bit her lip. She knew he didn't need words to express what he was feeling. He just needed her right now. She led him to the bedroom and towards the bed. The only words Jamie heard come out of her mouth barely registered.
"Come here baby."
He just needed to feel what he was feeling right now. Eddie was his comfort. She grounded him. He just needed to forget what had just happened. He managed to lock eyes with her, and she nodded her head. She knew he needed her.
Jamie woke hours later and found Eddie curled into him, her head buried in his chest. The events of the day came flooding back to him in a huge tidal wave that was threatening to knock him down. He felt his bottom lip and chin begin to quiver. A quiet sob began to wrack his body and it vibrated against Eddie's head, waking her from her peaceful slumber.
"Babe? It's ok. Do you want to talk about it?"
Only three words came out of his mouth.
"I lost them."
Eddie had barely heard him.
"What?"
Jamie repeated himself lost in his own thoughts.
"I lost them. I lost them. Both of them."
He realized if only for a few seconds when the fog of shock cleared that Eddie had no idea what he was talking about. She placed a kiss to his chest.
"Who babe?"
Jamie looked straight at Eddie, but not at her. Through her. He was shaking.
"My ex. Sydney and her son… Cooper… I tried to save them… But she bled out…"
He felt like he was rambling, and his words made no sense to him right now. But Eddie was his pillar of strength right now. She was his pillar of strength and comfort. She was his rock. She was his lifesaver. He held her closely, like someone who clung onto a lifesaver in the ocean desperate not to drown. He heard her voice and it seemed to calm him somewhat.
"Babe I am so sorry. But listen to me. Hey. There you are. Good. It's not your fault what happened to them. It was an accident. No one is going to blame you."
Jamie nodded his head and buried his face in her hair.
"I just need you right now Eddie."
Eddie nodded. She understood. She would give him as much time as he needed to feel better.
