"You got a tail on Eric Jeffries?"
Frank directed his question and Sid Gormley.
"Yes boss. He was last seen crossing over into the Bronx. I think you should call in aviation."
Frank had a frown plastered on his face.
"I'm not sending in aviation Sid."
Sid frowned, his lips forming a thin grim line.
"Boss, you've got three of your family members missing out there. Your daughter, who's the ADA of Manhattan, your daughter-in-law who's 9 months pregnant and one of our own and your son Jamie who's a doctor. Why not use aviation? We could find them in less than an hour."
Frank shook his head.
"I will not use this office or my influence to my advantage just to find my kids. I won't do that Sid. You know that."
Sid still frowned and shook his head, about to speak, but Garrett stepped in.
"Frank, Sid does have a point. You're using a lot of manpower scouring the entire city looking for three members of your family. It's like finding three needles in a very large haystack. I'm just saying maybe its a good idea and I agree with Sid on this one, aviation would help find them faster."
Frank shook his head.
"I'm not going to use my influence or this office to leverage finding my family. End of discussion."
Eddie looked at Carson and he nodded at her. She quietly made her way towards a table where she'd seen her gun. It was surprisingly cooler in the warehouse. She had more energy than she had in days. Her ankles although swollen and her waddle slowing her somewhat, she powered through, getting to the table where her gun was. Reaching for it, she gently picked it up.
Marty had his back turned towards her. Six of his associates/goons were crowded around a 32-inch tv watching a soccer game. They were cheering loudly. Marty still had his back turned towards Eddie and was seated at a large banquet table stuffing his face with pork rinds. As quietly as she could, Eddie clicked the safety of her gun off and pointed at the back of Marty's head.
"NYPD asshole. Get on your feet right now. I said get up!"
Marty rolled his eyes and got up. His hand reaching into his pocket. Eddie saw right through him.
"Get your hands out of your pockets Marty! NOW!"
Marty only gave a humorless laugh and pulled his own gun. Before Eddie knew what was going on they had both fired their guns. Jamie screamed out her name.
"Eddie!?"
Marty fell into a heap onto the concrete ground below him. His six associates/goons were now on their feet with their own guns drawn on Eddie. Carson was the only one who looked like he'd never handled a gun in his life. He lowered his gun and shook his head.
"Come on guys, I'm not a cop killer."
Eddie kept her laser focus on on the other five men who still had their guns drawn on her. Her body was tense with fear and adrenaline. Taking a deep breath, she kept her gun trained on the five men in front of her. The one to the right spoke up in irritation.
"Well maybe you can't shoot and kill a cop. But I can!"
Eddie felt pain side sweep her and she couldn't concentrate. She heard several gun's click, but there were no bullets. Then the angry voice of the man next to Carson.
"Stevens! What did you do? Where's our bullets?"
Eddie ignored the pain and kept her gun on the men in front of her. Carson looked at them and smirked.
"You guys are a bunch of idiots. I watched Marty a bunch of times take his magazine out of his gun and inspect his bullets. Then clean his gun. I'm observant. Oh, and if you want your bullets, you guys are going to have to take a dive into the East River to get them back."
Eddie gasped and then took another breath Carson reached for Eddie's gun and turned the safety back on. Then she heard some scuffling and a few groans. She felt someone's hand on her back. Barely able to look up, she found Erin next to her.
"Take it easy Eddie. Just breathe. Everything is going to be ok. Jamie! Her water broke!"
Eddie blew through another contraction as it side swiped her again. Jamie showed up in her line of vision.
"Babe. Look at me. Breathe. Breathe baby."
Eddie shook her head no, looking around her.
"No. I can't be in labor. Not here. Not now."
Even as those words came out of her mouth, she knew it was already too late since her water had just broken.
"Eddie sweetheart. Look at me. It's already too late."
Jamie and Erin both knew Eddie was just scared. She looked over at Carson who gave her a sympathetic look.
"Come on, there's some cots over here."
Eddie gave out a frustrated groan.
"Meanwhile, the three of us have been sleeping on the concrete floor! Ow! Son of a bitch! Jamie! We are never having more kids! Do you hear me?"
Jamie completely deflected and tried to smile.
"Ok Eddie. Just breathe sweetheart. Let's get you comfortable. I need you to relax. Breathe. In and out. In and out."
Carson handed Jamie some folded up blankets from the cot next to the one Eddie was lying on.
"Here Doctor Reagan. What else can I do to help? When I went to dump the bullets in the river I went and got some things for you. There in the cabinet over here."
Carson pointed towards a small cabinet behind the cots. Jamie opened it and found all the supplies he needed. He handed Jamie a bottle of whiskey and he chuckled.
"Cute and ironic. Jameson whiskey. I was named after this you know."
Carson gave a small smile and cleared his throat.
"To clean your hands. Since there's no running water and soap available."
Nodding, Jamie poured some whiskey over his hands and Carson handed him a wad of paper towels. Jamie took them gratefully and dried his hands. Taking a breath in and letting it out slowly, he looked to Eddie as he pulled on a pair of gloves.
"Ok Eddie. Look at me sweetheart. I need you to put your knees up and take a big deep breath. Big deep breath. Good girl."
This wasn't the most ideal place for Eddie to give birth, but Jamie knew they had no choice. It was way too late to stop labor now. He kept talking to Eddie trying to keep her calm.
"I know. I'm sorry that's uncomfortable. I'll be done in just a minute… Looks like you are 8 centimeters dilated and fully effaced. Two more centimeters to go. I want you to breathe and try to relax, ok?"
Eddie nodded and watched, and Jamie fixed the blanket and helped her turn onto her left side. She spoke up with tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you earlier. It just… It hurts ok. I've never been through this before and I don't know what I'm even doing."
Jamie gave her a comforting smile.
"I know your scared babe. It's ok to be scared. This is your first time. No first-time mother knows what to expect when they're in labor. Just go with the flow. I know. I'm sorry it hurts. If we were at the hospital, I'd have you on an epidural already. But we deal with what we've got. Which isn't much."
Eddie turned her attention to Erin who gave her hand a squeeze.
"Don't worry Eddie. I said much worse things to Jack when I was in labor with Nicky. Although I was pissed at him because he showed up late. He came just as I ran into trouble. Nicky's shoulder got stuck."
Jamie put in his two cents.
"You're lucky she didn't have a broken clavicle sis."
Eddie squeezed Erin's hand again when she felt another contraction ripped through her. She let out a cry and looked to Jamie for help.
"Please get her out!"
Erin squeezed Eddie's hand and gave her words of encouragement.
"It's ok Eddie. Just breathe. You're almost there. Just think, soon you'll have that beautiful little girl in your arms. You'll fall completely in love."
Eddie nodded her head and ignored the sweat that was forming between her eyebrows. The contraction was coming down and it was becoming easier to breathe again. Jamie gave Eddie a sympathetic look and spoke.
"You're doing so good babe. I know this is very uncomfortable, but I need to check one more time, ok?"
Eddie nodded and put her knees up. She looked at Erin who nodded at her.
"Shh. It's ok Eddie. I know."
Eddie felt like flying off the handle. She was scared, she was hot, and she needed someone to redirect her pain induced anger at, and at the moment it was Jamie. Taking a deep shuddering breath, she looked at Jamie as he his popped over the blanket covering her legs.
"Ok. We're there babe. I want you to give me a push. Erin's going to hold both of your hands and you squeeze them as hard as you want. Give me a push! Push! Come on! You've got this sweetheart! Push!"
Without even thinking about it, Eddie found herself leaning into Erin and holding onto Erin's hands for dear life. She let out another scream and pushed again. Eddie couldn't believe how much pain she was in. Erin gave her some encouragement.
"That's good Eddie. You're doing great. Keep pushing. You've got this."
But Eddie didn't feel like she had control over what was happening, because clearly, she didn't. She was just following what her body was telling her, and it was telling her to push. She pushed again and then she heard Jamie's voice behind the blanket.
"You're doing great Eddie. One more big push and she'll be here! One more big push for me! Come on!"
Eddie shook her head. She didn't think she could do it.
"I can't Jamie! I just can't!"
Jamie reassured her and stayed where he was at.
"Yes, you can honey! I know you can. One more big push for me! There you go! One more! One more! I've got her! Baby girl Reagan!"
Eddie was over the moon as Jamie held the screaming little girl over the blanket. She hadn't noticed Carson had put up the old privacy screens for them. Jamie was beaming as he cut his daughter's umbilical cord and tied it off the stump with his shoelace. He placed the screaming infant on top of Eddie's chest, and she was in tears.
"She's beautiful Jamie! But we need to give her a name. We can't keep calling her 'baby girl Reagan' forever."
They couple was interrupted by a loud bang and several sets of feet entering the warehouse.
"NYPD! Come out with your hands up!"
Jamie poked his head over the privacy screens as he heard Danny's voice.
"Jamie! Eddie! Erin! Are you guys ok?"
Jamie smiled and answered.
"We're over here Danny! We need the EMT's now!"
Danny took a peek over the privacy screens and his heart skipped a beat and melted. There on top of Eddie's chest was his niece. It was Erin who spoke up next.
"Took you guys long enough to find us!"
Danny pursed his lips.
"It took Baez and I some time to crack Eric Jeffries, and we've been cracking hard. He broke down once I told him that if Eddie died, he'd be responsible for murdering a police officer. That he'd get 30 years to life for it."
Erin nodded.
"The four men tied up are the ones that were following Marty Hollinson and were willing to kill Eddie. Carson Stevens had nothing to do with this. Marty was blackmailing him. He's an innocent man who happened to get roped into kidnapping us. Marty was going to kill his family."
Danny nodded but then glared at the four men who were tied up. Carson looked nervously at the cop who was slapping cuffs on him.
"I gave them food and water. I never actually hurt them. I was helping out!"
Eddie sighed. The nightmare was finally coming to an end, her family was safe, and their daughter was finally here. She turned to Jamie and spoke.
"Jamie what are we going to name this beautiful baby girl?"
Smiling, Jamie kissed the crown of his daughter's forehead.
"Cora. Cora Rene Janko-Reagan."
