"Jamie? Uh could you help me get my shirt on? I can't get it over my head."
Jamie gave her a sympathetic look and helped her pull her shirt over her head. Eddie gave a sigh of relief.
"Thank-you babe. I can't wait to go home and hold Cora. Be in our own bed. Sleep without all these doctors and nurses bugging me at all hours, doing neuro checks and taking blood from me."
Jamie smiled and slung Eddie's bag over his shoulder.
"Well, at least you have me in case you need help. I am a doctor you know."
Eddie gave a triumphant smile as Jamie helped her up from the bed.
"Ok, it's a little harder to walk right now. I didn't realize my muscles still hurt."
Jamie ran a hand over Eddie's back.
"Yeah, you'll be a little sore for a while longer. That's why you have me to help you out. You know I'm here for you right?"
Eddie nodded but looked unsure.
"Yeah. Yeah. Of course. It's just overwhelming you know? There's just so many things to do."
Jamie made a quick mental note in his head.
"Eddie. You're not alone in this. We're all here for you. The whole family is. There's no shame in asking for help."
Eddie nodded. She just needed to go home and be with Cora. Jamie was right beside her. He was her support beams through it all. She grabbed for Jamie's hand and held it.
"You're always there for me Jamie. I mean that."
"There's my baby girl."
A rocking chair had been set up in the sunroom. Jamie placed Cora in Eddie's arms. She looked down at Cora as if she were holding her for the very first time. She took in every feature of her face. Then she tried to pick out who she looked like more: her or Jamie. She looked up at Jamie when she saw a sort of smile come to Cora's tiny face. Jamie took a seat next to her on the couch right next to the rocking chair.
"Is that a smirk?"
Jamie gave his own and looked at Eddie.
"That would be the infamous Reagan smirk. Wonder where she gets that from?"
Eddie gave Jamie a look and then traced Cora's tiny nose.
"Wipe that smug smirk off your face Reagan. Sometimes I would think you were being arrogant."
Jamie put a hand to his chest as if she had wounded him.
"Me? Arrogant? When have I ever been arrogant? Tell me."
Eddie gave her own smirk and kept tracing Cora's nose.
"Well, according to you, I'm bossy and opinionated. I guess we cancel each other out. Although your arrogant side doesn't come out very often. I'm just trying to see how much of me and you she has in her. I think she has my nose. We already know she has your smirk. I hope she has your patience."
Jamie ran a hand over Cora's tiny head and then kissed her forehead.
"You'll be just like daddy won't you princess?"
Cora's face scrunched up and she let out a cry. Jamie slowly vacated the couch and spoke.
"I'll go make her a bottle."
Eddie did her best to calm a fussy Cora.
"Shh. It's ok sweetheart. Daddy is making you a bottle now."
Cora continued to fuss, and Eddie rocked her slightly, which only made her more upset. Eddie kept rocking her and she kept screaming. Jamie was back only five minutes later with Cora's bottle. He handed Eddie Cora's bottle and Cora latched onto it as if life depended on it. Jamie ran a hand over her forehead one more time.
"Slow down baby girl. The food's not going anywhere."
Eddie traced her tiny eyebrows and watched her daughter eat. She made tiny noises as she ate and Eddie spoke to her, hoping it would calm her.
"Good girl. Are you happy now that you're eating? Are you happy to be with mommy?"
Cora continued to make noise as she ate and Jamie spoke.
"Well, now we know she gets cranky when she's hungry. Just like her mother."
Eddie gave a laugh.
"Well, I don't think she'll have a problem with eating. She probably won't be a picky eater either. I can't wait to get off these pain killers."
Jamie put a hand on the side of Eddie's neck and caressed it.
"A few more days at least. Then wait for it to be completely out of your system before you start breastfeeding again."
Jamie noticed Cora had finished the entire six-ounce bottle he'd made for her. Eddie smiled at Cora and lowered her voice.
"Ok. Let's get all that gas out of your tummy sweetie."
Eddie wasn't sure what to do so Jamie stepped in and helped her out.
"When babies are this little, you lie them on their belly and gently pat their back. Like this. See?"
Eddie nodded and watched as Jamie took Cora from her arms and expertly but gently turned her over on her stomach and started patting her back. The couple listened as they heard a few soft burps come from Cora. Turning her onto her back, he swaddled her back up and placed her in Eddie's arms.
"There you go baby girl. All that gas is out of your tummy. Now your all full and happy. Ready for a nice nap."
Eddie lightly brushed her lips against Cora's tiny head. She'd never felt so happy in her life. Not like this anyways.
"Jamie, I don't know how to describe it, but I'm head over heels for this little girl. How is that possible?"
Jamie took his seat on the couch next to the rocking chair.
"I ask myself that every time I deliver a baby. It's not really something you can describe. It's just a feeling that's there. Besides, we made this perfect little soul together. She was made out of love."
Neither one had noticed Danny leaning up against the door way to the sunroom making a face.
"Ok you two. Cut it out. Now can I see my niece please? This little princess is going to get lots of love and attention from this family. Especially me. I get dibs on holding her first when we come for Sunday dinner."
Erin had just entered the room and shook her head, smiling at Cora.
"Oh no you don't. As her aunt, I get that privilege. Besides, I get her the best gifts. She's going to be spending a lot of time with me, if I can get things to calm down at work."
Danny gave her a look.
"Yeah, ok sis."
Erin gave a triumphant grin and started talking to Cora.
"Yes. You'll love spending time with Auntie Erin. I was there when you were born. I'm sure your daddy wouldn't mind me watching you every once in a while. Right Jamie?"
Jamie gave a smile and nodded.
"She loves you already Erin. Something about your voice calms her."
Erin nodded and ran a finger on her left cheek.
"Well, this sweet little girl is a true miracle."
Eddie nodded and looked Erin straight in the eye.
"She sure is."
Jamie couldn't be happier with everything right now. Maybe things were really falling into place.
