Chapter 30: Coming out Stronger

Jamie felt like things were finally starting to get back to normal. The nightmares had finally stopped and Eddie was doing much better. She was getting help from every member of the family. They each took turns taking care of Cora so that Eddie could get some rest. She was set to return to work in just under a week. She felt like she was ready. She missed being out on the streets. Jamie knew that. Mara brought Jamie out of his thoughts as she organized the last tray of instruments.

"Doctor Reagan, your all set."

Jamie looked at Mara seriously and then sat down in front of Tessa and smiled through his mask.

"Ok Tessa. Let's see how far you are. Just relax and take a deep breath in for me. Deep breath. Good. That's it."

Tessa looked at her husband Craig and winced.

"This is the last kid we're having. I swear to you."

Craig looked at Tessa and shook his head, then looked at Jamie.

"She says this every time doc. This is baby number three."

Tessa glared at Craig and shifted to try and get comfortable. Jamie fixed the sheet and gave Tessa a small smile.

"Ok Tessa, your 5 centimeters dilated and about 80 percent effaced. Baby's doing well. Heart rate is above 140."

Tessa nodded and grabbed for Craig's hand and squeezed it.

"Oh my god Craig! Here comes another one! You did this to me!"

Craig ran a hand through Tessa's hair and placed a kiss to her sweaty left row.

"Shh. It's ok. We're almost done with this contraction and you can rest alright? Keep breathing. Good. Just like we learned in Lamaze class. Forget about where we are right now. Where do you want to be?"

Tessa smiled and shook her head taking a deep breath in and then let it out.

"The Bahamas. Our last vacation. That was so relaxing. But I'm not going to mention the details of that vacation. That's between you and I."

Jamie shook his head and smirked behind his mask, getting up from the stool, he walked towards the door and discarded his soiled gloves and mask in the waste bin.

"Rest up Tessa. I'll be back to check on you soon. Did you still want that epidural?"

Tessa nodded at Jamie and waved at him.

"Yes, thank-you for everything Doctor Reagan. I don't know what Craig and I would do without you helping us through this third pregnancy."

Jamie nodded humbly and gave a small nod.

"It's my pleasure. It's all in a days work. I'll let you get some rest."

Tessa nodded and closed her eyes. Opening up the door, Jamie looked over at Sandy and she handed him the next patient's chart.

"Caroline Adams. I really thought she would've come out of her coma by now. The last six months haven't been easy on her family. Is her husband Graham here?"

Mara nodded her head.

"Yes. Sandy and I are going to scrub in. He's already in the OR in proper attire. Are you coming doctor?"

Jamie nodded and pulled out his phone.

"Right behind you Mara."

Taking a deep breath and letting it out, Jamie sent a quick text to Eddie.

'Just checking in with you babe. Should be home in a couple of hours. Two more babies to deliver. Love you.'

Stuffing his phone back into his scrub pants pocket, he made his way to the OR scrub room. Quickly scrubbing, he pushed the doors to the OR open with his back. Mara helped Jamie put a pair of surgical gloves on and into a yellow surgical gown. He looked at each person that would be assisting him in the room.

"Ok everyone. You know the drill. Mara, Sandy, you two are going to be assisting me. Doctor Santos you are watching Caroline's vitals. Who's keeping time? Sonia. Who am I missing? Oh, Oscar and Leslie. The two of you keep this room going."

Jamie didn't waste any time. He got down to business and was concentrating on bringing a healthy and beautiful baby into the world. From the corner of his eye, he could see Caroline's husband Graham looking a little pale. Continuing to concentrate he looked to Sandy.

"Sandy, can you get a stool for Graham to sit down on please?"

Sandy nodded and pushed a stool towards Graham who sat down on it gratefully. He looked at Jamie and nodded his head.

"Thank-you doctor. Is our baby ok?"

Jamie looked at Mara and nodded.

"Ok almost there. Mara help me pull. Keep the suction right there Sandy. Almost there… And you have a beautiful and healthy boy! Do you want to cut the umbilical cord dad?"

Graham had tears in his eyes and slowly stood up from the stool he was sitting on. Carefully stepping towards Jamie he took the scissors from Sandy and smiled, separating mother and son.

"Thank-you Doctor Reagan. Thank-you for everything. He's beautiful."

Jamie entered the apartment quietly and shut the door. He found Eddie and Cora asleep on the couch. His gaze softened and he padded over to Eddie, gently taking Cora from her arms. She startled herself awake when her arms felt empty.

"Cora?"

Jamie shifted Cora in his arms and put a hand on Eddie's shoulder.

"It's ok, she's with me. You were sleeping pretty hard. How was your day?"

Eddie looked at her phone and shook her head.

"Good. Oh my god. I didn't realize how late it was. I didn't get dinner started for you. I still need to put Cora down."

Jamie looked at Eddie and ran a thumb over her left cheek.

"Honey, breathe. I've got it covered. You are doing so good. I'm right here."
