Both Cora and Patrick were sleeping soundly upstairs while Eddie made her way downstairs. The hairs on the back of her neck immediately stood up on end when she heard noise in the kitchen. As she got to the bottom of the stairs, she had no time to react to someone behind her. She felt something crashing down hard on the back of her head and then an explosion of pain. Then she saw nothing as darkness came up to greet her.

"Come on Eddie, pick up."

Jamie knew Eddie would be napping while the kids were also napping. But he also knew she would be up every couple of hours to feed Patrick, and it was well past time. He began to worry. He put his pen down on the chart he was working on and looked up at Mara.

"I need to leave. Could you let Doctor Tarnson know it's a family emergency?"

Mara nodded and became concerned.

"Are Eddie and the kids ok?"

Jamie shook his head as he got on his phone to 9-1-1.

"I don't know, but Eddie's not picking up her phone."

Leaving the break room, Jamie spoke into his phone.

"Yes, my name is Doctor Jamie Reagan. I need a patrol car sent to my house. My address? 97560 E 197th St. Bay ridge. I've been calling my wife and she's not picking up her phone. No. She's home with our 2-year-old daughter Cora and our son Patrick which she gave birth to 3 weeks ago."

Jamie hurried out the door and towards the parking garage. He had to get to Eddie and the kids. He needed to know if they were ok. Arriving home some 45 minutes later, he found 4 RMP's parked outside their house. Getting out he tried to rush towards the front door. But he was stopped by Sargent Renzulli.

"I can't let you go in Jamie."

Jamie frowned and clenched his jaw.

"I need to know that she and kids are ok."

Another officer was looking in a side window next to the front door. He frowned and gave Renzulli and worried look.

"There's an unconscious woman at the bottom of the stairs, she's injured."

Renzulli looked at Jamie with wide eyes.

"Do I have your permission to break down the door?"

Jamie nodded his head and Renzulli kicked in the front door. He was ready to rush to Eddie's side. But the other officers had to clear the house first. He heard an officer in the back of the house call out to them.

"All clear!"

Jamie scrambled into the house and leaned down next to Eddie.

"Oh my god Eddie. Who did this to you?"

There was a deep wound to the back of Eddie's head. A couple of EMT's came in with a stretcher and looked at Jamie.

"Doctor Reagan. I didn't realize this was your house we were called out to. We'll take good care of your wife."

Jamie nodded but wasn't going to let them out of his sight. He saw another couple of officers come down with both Cora and Patrick. One of them spoke up.

"We'll have another set of EMT's check them out. They're both sound asleep."

Another set of EMT's came into the house and the two other officers placed both Cora and Patrick onto the stretcher. Neither one budged from their sleep while the EMT's checked them out. The EMT looked at Jamie and nodded.

"All clear Doctor Reagan. Your son and daughter don't have a scratch on them."

Nodding Jamie looked at the two officers.

"This might be a lot to ask of you guys, but can you take them over to my father's and grandfather's house? They are just three doors down on the left."

One of the officer's paled.

"You mean the commissioner's house?

Jamie nodded and smiled.

"Yes, the very one. Can you bring Cora and Patrick over there and drop them off? My grandfather is home. I'm going to the hospital with my wife. Make sure she's ok."

The officer straightened out and nodded his head.

"Of course. We'll bring them right over."

The two officers were out the door with both Cora and Patrick. Jamie had his eyes fixed on Eddie. The EMT's had just transferred her from the floor to the stretcher and were putting it upright. Jamie motioned for the EMT on the right.

"Could I have a pair of gloves please?"

The EMT nodded and handed Jamie some. Putting them on, he gently leaned Eddie forward and spoke to her.

"It's ok babe, I'm just going to check your head. You've got a nasty bump. Let me just move your hair aside a little bit. Huh, looks like she's got some wood splinters embedded deep in her scalp here. Someone hit her with a bat."

The EMT to the left gave Jamie an apprehensive look.

"Doctor Reagan, we should get her into the bus. There's something that we should discuss but not in present company."

The EMT gestured towards the multitude of cops swarming Jamie and Eddie's house. Nodding Jamie went out the front door with the EMT's. He held gentle pressure against the back of Eddie's head as the three placed the stretcher onto the bus and climbed in, shutting the doors. Jamie removed his hand from the back of Eddie's head so that the EMT could take a look at it further. He sat back for a moment and looked both EMT's in the eye.

"Ok, we're in the bus. What couldn't you tell me in my own house?"

The EMT to the right frowned and shook his head and moved the sheet a little.

"She might have been assaulted."

Swallowing, Jamie felt his blood begin to boil. But he kept calm.

"Are you positive?"

The EMT's eyes softened.

"We'll have another doc at Saint Vic's check her out."

Jamie felt a pit in his stomach grow. But he kept quiet and let the EMT's patch Eddie up as best they could. He smoothed some hair away from her face.

"I wish I knew who did this to you."

Jamie held his breath as Doctor Harrison gave him a confident nod.

"Everything came back negative. No signs of sexual assault. Although her stitches came out. It's what caused the bleeding. It must've happened when she fell. I'm guessing she must've missed the last step on the stairs of your house. Other than having a nasty bump to the head and a cracked upper left rib, she's in fair condition. We'll keep her here over night to monitor her."

Jamie shook hands with Doctor Harrison and gave a sigh of relief.

"Thanks Jerry. I appreciate the care and respect you've shown my wife."

Doctor Harrison nodded.

"Any time Jamie. Take care."

Jamie nodded and pulled up a stool next to Eddie's bed and ran a hand over her cheek.

"I'll have Danny find whoever did this to you. I want them locked up."
