Things at Bridgerton House that summer got really out of control. Violet Bridgerton just lost her husband six months ago, and suddenly she found herself taking care of her young and teenage children.
Part of her never regret marrying her childhood sweetheart when she became pregnant with her first child, Anthony, and her sweet Edmund was such a great man ready to take on their child responsibility, but because she got married early in her life, she never completed her studies or went to college. No matter how much Edmund encouraged her, that was not something on the cards for her anymore because soon after Anthony was born, God blessed her with child after child.
Violet Bridgerton was so used to life throwing unexpected challenges that she was not prepared to face a challenge where she had to live without her husband. Sadly, this is her truth now, and even with help from the Edmund sisters, she still struggles a lot.
Bless her sweet Anthony, who became her strength, shouldering all responsibilities, including learning his father's business from his aunt to keep them financially secure while he prepared himself for his senior year.
With his help, Violet isnow able to take care of all her children, except her second son, Benedict, who has become a troublemaker since Edmund passed away.
Sometimes Violet wonders where her sweet artistic son has disappeared and who this young boy is who spent all his summer dating various girls despite being in a relationship with the next-door girl, Genevieve.
Things turned so out of control when one night Benedict returned drunk from a party and Genevieve came after him, looking furious. "You hooked up with Sienna! My best friend!"
Benedict was completely drunk as he laughed. "Oh, please, she is not a great friend if she threw herself at me, and beside, I am a guy with needs, and I cannot wait forever for you to get the message."
The Bridgerton's were shocked when Genevieve grabbed a nearby jug of cold water and threw it at Benedict's face. "Here is your message; we are over!"
She had tears in her eyes as she turned to stare at Violet and Anthony. "I do not know this person anymore, and I hope you get him straight before he becomes unrecognisable to you too."
She left, and Violet watched as Anthony and Colin carried their drunk brother upstairs.
She was up all night trying to figure out how to help her son, and it was then that she came up with a brilliant and mad idea.
The next morning, they all gathered around for breakfast when Benedict Bridgerton arrived quite hungover.
"Good morning, family." He sat down and started drinking his juice, not realising that no one had greeted him in return.
It was only after he was finished with his eggs that he realised the tense atmosphere in the room. "Is everything alright?"
"You tell us, brother? What makes a girl throw a jug of water on her long-time boyfriend's face?" Anthony inquires; his tone shows disappointment that is reflected on everyone's face, and a snippet of memories returns to Ben as he recalls what happened at the Granville party and how his girlfriend Genevieve saw him and her best friend Sienna in a moment of heated passion.
"Aww, man! I messed things up with Gen big time. I should apologise." Benedict was about to get up when Colin stopped him. "You are a late playboy; your ex-girlfriend has left for France this morning; I think she will attend school there."
Benedict was so stunned to move because he never thought his actions would drive someone away, especially someone he cares about.
"What you did was totally despicable; your father and I did not raise you like this." Violet began, but Benedict scoffs. "Well, he is not here anymore."
"That's enough." Violet slapped her hand on the table in anger, making all her children flinch. Even three-year-old Hyacinth whimpered and was about to cry when Anthony quickly picked his sister up and swayed her for a few minutes.
"Daphne, please take your sisters and Gregory to play." Violet asked sweetly while Colin remained seated, feeling worried about why he was not asking to leave.
"Alright, I know these last few months have not been great for us, and I also know that Edmund would never want his sons to behave like spoil brats, feeling it's okay to play with any girl's feelings who fell for their charm."
"Mom, please, I know I messed up with Genevieve; can I just call her and apologise?" Benedict says he desperately does not like where this conversation is going.
"Oh, you are going to call that girl and apologise for sure, and so will I for raising a son who thought he could disrespect a girl in front of me without any consequences."
"What do you mean by consequences?"
"What I mean is that as you begin your new year at Mayfair High in a few days, you are not allowed to date anyone."
Benedict's mouth fell open while Anthony sat stunned and Colin gaped at their mother. "Ben cannot date? Mom, you do realise that with Simon Bassett going off early to college and Anthony being famous for grumpy shrew, Ben is next contender to be the most popular guy in the school?"
Violet smiled at her son as she explained. "His popularity will not matter if he plays with hearts like toys."
"Mom! This is unfair! How would it look if my brothers could date and I could not? I will be social, pariah!" Benedict complains, feeling horrified by that future.
"Do not worry, bother; I am not interested in dating any of those chippering girls in our school." Anthony assured his brother, although he tried hard not to think about her.
"And girls find me too sweet for romantic prospects." Colin says this while not thinking about his crush on his longtime friend.
"Well, it's not my fault I share DNA with you losers."
"Hey." His brothers protested, but suddenly a loud slap on the table made them flinch.
"Enough is enough, Benedict Bridgerton! You know what! I am done with your attitude, so new rule, you can date if Anthony does, and same goes for you, Colin, so your brother will not feel injustice for this rule."
Suddenly Colin wants to protest, but Benedict is glaring at Anthony. "This is all your fault! Just because you have to be so perfect, she expects us to be perfect too."
"Do not blame me, brother; I am not the one who was swapping spit with every willing girl all summer."
A loud clang of plates was heard as Benedict pushed his plate roughly aside and stomped off towards his room.
For a while, no one said anything until Colin tried to lighten the mood. "Well, mother, I think this will be one interesting year of school."
And while Violet sighed, Anthony wondered: How will he look after his brothers at school if one begins to resent him?
