Kerchak glanced at his mate Kala lovingly. She had life inside of her. It was her first baby Ape. It was his too. She was almost at delivery time. He knew he had to talk with her. She had gotten into a huge fight over bananas. Cravings, he supposed. As he started to walk to where she was resting under a tree, he heard the first howls of birthing pains. He rushed to her side.
"Kala," he said rubbing her back, "It's alright."
"I'm frightened," Kala admitted.
I know," Kerchak assured her, "But we'll get through this together. For now, breathe."
"I am breathing," Kala pointed out, "If I were not breathing, I would be dead."
You might have been by getting into a fight with the other ape over bananas, Kerchak thought.
"Kala," he began.
He was cut short by another loud howl of pain. He took her hand.
"I know it hurts," he said softly, "The baby is making its way into the world."
"I understand," she said, "I cannot wait to hold this baby."
"Kala," Kerchak said, "You should not have been fighting with a bigger Ape over bananas. I'm thinking maybe-"
"She stole my bananas. She stole the nutrients for the baby."
"If she had harmed you-"
The thought of losing her made tears pool in his eyes. He knew that he was thinking emotionally. He loved Kala.
"I wasn't thinking of me," Kala said, "I was thinking of the baby. I needed to make sure it had it's nutrients."
"Alright," Kerchak said softly, "Alright."
Kala felt the ring of fire. She howled as the unbearable pain settled over her. The baby's head peaked out from Kala's privates.
"Kala," Kerchak exclaimed, "I can see the baby's head."
"It hurts," Kala cried, "It really, really hurts."
"I know," Kerchak said kneeling before her, "Just one push and it will be over. It is almost out."
Kayla howled as she gave a final push. As the baby slid out of her, she felt the relief. Kerchak grabbed the baby and scooped her up. He looked at the baby in awe before rubbing her back and sighing in relief when she took her first breath. She let out a loud wail. Kerchak handed the baby to Kala in awe.
