The café buzzed with conversations as Cleo, Emma, Rikki, and Lewis gathered around a corner table. All eyes were on Lewis who took a deep breath, ready to share the discovery he had made in the ancient texts.

"Cleo, everyone," Lewis began, his voice steady but tinged with urgency, "I've found something very important about the moon pool and your powers."

As he explained the details he had discovered, the friends listened intently. The faded illustration of the moon pool, the crystals being the source of their magic, it all made sense somehow. When Lewis reached the part about the sacrifice he paused for a moment, unable to find the right words.

"The sacrifice," Lewis continued, "involves a mermaid giving up her powers permanently by going into the moon pool on a full moon while holding a crystal in her hand. If this is done, the others will regain their powers."

Cleo, Emma, and Rikki exchanged glances, realizing the sacrifice required one of them to surrender their mermaid abilities.

"It's a permanent decision," Lewis emphasized, his gaze shifting between them. "But it's the only way to restore the connection to the crystals and bring back your powers. And it's not just that. The book also mentioned that the crystals are giving life to the surrounding waters. I'm not sure what this means but I think if the magic fades completely it could affect more than just your powers."

After a few minutes of silence Emma quietly spoke up. "We need to decide who will make the sacrifice. It's for the greater good, for all of us."

Rikki nodded in agreement. "If it means we can regain our powers then it's worth considering."

Emma, her expression thoughtful, added, "It's not just about our powers. It's about protecting Mako and everything we've experienced together."

Rikki nodded. "Someone has to make the sacrifice. We can't let the magic fade away completely."

As they discussed the potential candidates for the sacrifice, each friend considered the impact on their lives. Being mermaids was a part of them now, none of them wanted to give it all up. They all had been through so much that they couldn't even imagine what life would be like as a...human.

After some time of discussing the situation Cleo said, "We can't let the moon pool's magic fade away but we also need to consider the personal sacrifice."

"And we have to decide soon. The full moon is approaching, and the longer we wait, the weaker our powers become." Rikki added.

Cleo, Emma, and Rikki exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. Lewis, knowing the decision can't be made immediately, spoke up, "This is a decision that will affect all of you. Take the time you need to think about it."

On the way home, Rikki walked through the quiet streets of the town, deep in thought about what they had learned. As she turned a corner, she unexpectedly found herself face to face with Zane, a figure from her past whose actions had left lasting consequences.

"Rikki," Zane exclaimed, surprise flickering in his eyes. "It's been a while."

Rikki, secretly hoping he wouldn't continue talking to her, responded shortly, "Zane."

As they stood on the dimly lit street, Rikki couldn't help but recall what happened - the destruction of the moon pool, the fading of their magical connection, and the mysteries that had unfolded since.

"You know, I've been thinking about what happened," Zane began tentatively, his tone carrying a hint of regret. "I didn't realize it would affect you and the others like this."

Rikki, trying to keep her voice down, replied, "You destroyed the moon pool for money. Do you even understand what's happening to us now?" She was having a hard time not shouting her words but she knew she couldn't risk anyone overhearing their conversation.

Zane, the feeling of guilt slowly building up inside him, admitted, "I thought the crystals would make us rich. I never imagined it would lead to all this."

Rikki sighed, the weight of the situation pressing on her. "Our powers are fading, Zane. We are all trying to figure out a way to fix it, but it's not easy. We might lose everything."

Realizing how bad the situation truly was, Zane tried to explain, "I did it because I wanted us to have a happy life. I thought the money would give us a future together."

Rikki responded, "Zane, there are things more important than money. You have to understand the consequences of your actions. We're facing the loss of something we can't get back."

Zane nodded solemnly. "I never meant for this to happen, Rikki. If there's anything I can do to help - "

Rikki interrupted, "Right now, we need to focus on finding a solution. Mako's magic is fading, and we can't afford to lose it completely. There's nothing you can do except staying out of our lives from now on. I don't want anything to do with you or your stupid money!"

She continued walking home, leaving Zane behind and hoping someone would find a solution.
