The sun was coming up now creating enough light so that Daryl could make out a footprint in the mud. He moved a leaf that was covering some of the tracks, then blew another away. "What do ya think?" I asked him as he was examining it.
"Yeah." He said. "They came through here."
"You think you'll be able to track them?"
"Maybe but…they ain't fresh, which means they're far away." He stopped and then looked at me. His expression looked a little angry, which made me look at him weird. He looked as if he wanted to say something else but refrained for some reason.
We walked on. "Just say it." I pushed him to tell me.
"What?" Daryl said looking at the ground.
"You look like you wanna say something so just say it." I kind of snapped.
He stopped and looked back at me, we stared at each other for a moment. No one speaking. "I just don't know why ya didn't tell me." He finally said. "Did ya thank I'd try and stop ya?"
I widened my eyes and gave him a stupid look. "You did try to stop me!" I put my arms out.
"Yeah cuz you was leavin' to go find them guys by yerself in the middle 'a the night." He said roughly. "You got no idea where the hell they even are and you was gonna get yerself killed."
"I could'a handled it." I said cockily and walked in front of him.
Daryl snorted. "You got no idea what yer doin'. It's like I cain't even turn my back on ya."
I turned around and glared at him. "What's it to you anyway?"
He hesitated but only for a second. "Yer dad would'a wanted me to look after you."
I scoffed and turned back around continuing to walk. I was mad but for a different reason now. That's the only reason he came to help me? I looked down.
"Hey." Daryl stopped me. "I ain't mad, I just wish ya would'a told me instead 'a runnin' off. You know I got yer back."
I inhaled sharply. "Yeah." He walked ahead now. There was a pause. "Is that the only reason?" I decided to ask him.
"What?"
"You said my dad would've wanted you to look after me." I stated. "Is that the only reason why you came after me?"
Daryl stopped and just stood there for a moment, then he finally turned and looked at me. "No, that was fer you." He said. "I'on want nothin' to happen to ya."
"Why?" I shook my head. We stared at each other again. All of a sudden, Daryl kissed me. Hard. We pulled apart and I looked at him wide-eyed. "What the hell was that?" I snapped.
He immediately looked embarrassed. "I'on know." He cleared his throat and quickly turned around. "I'm sorry." He started walking again. "Let's keep lookin'." He seemed to get flustered after that. I kind of liked that and had to smirk. Daryl must've found more prints. "This way." He pointed and I followed.
I decided to tease him about that kiss. "I can't pretend like that didn't just happen." I smirked. "Maybe you can…but I can't—
"It was a mistake." He cut me off and turned to look at me. My smile faded. "I'm sorry." He shook his head. "Won't happen again, okay?" He said it kind of angrily. I became more serious. We just locked eyes for a moment, then he finally started walking again. I felt somewhat depressed after that for some reason. My eyes casted down. "Looks like they picked up the pace." Daryl said. "They tried to get away from somethin'. But I don't see no other tracks but theirs." He turned and looked at me again. "What's 'a matter?"
I looked up at him, then shook my head. "So," I took a breath, "they tried to get out fast?" I cleared my throat. "Maybe one of them got hurt."
"Maybe."
I suddenly remembered something. "I shot that guy." I said. "The one in our house. I got him in the shoulder. It felt good." I smiled a little.
Daryl nodded. "They probably had to stop somewhere so he could fix it." He looked around briefly and up at the sky. "Let's keep movin'."
Daryl and I decided to stop and set up camp once it started to get dark. Daryl made a fire and cooked some beans over it while I secured the area. "Eat the rest 'a these beans." He held it out to me.
"I don't want anymore." I said.
"Just eat 'em." He said more forcefully. "You need to eat more."
I raised my eyebrows feelings annoyed. "I really don't want them."
Daryl seemed to hesitate. "…I'll feed 'em to ya like a kid." He said holding the spoon out. "Here."
"No." I moved my head away, he kept doing it. "Fine! I'll eat the fuckin' beans!" I snapped. "God, you're such a dick." I grabbed the can and spoon off him. "How about you worry about you and not me?"
"How about I wash 'at mouth out with soap?" He said back. "You got a dirty, little mouth."
"Hm." I flung a spoonful of beans at him that hit in the chest, then laughed. He surprisingly did too.
"Thank yer funny, huh?" He said. "How 'bout this?" He shook a can of soda up. I knew what he was going to do and tried to take cover, but I wasn't quick enough. He popped the tab, then sprayed me with the drink. I squealed and laughed and tried to somewhat block it with my arms. I danced around the campfire while Daryl chased me, both of us laughing and having fun.
Suddenly, I tripped over one of the logs and Daryl caught me. "Oop." He said. He held me tightly, we were still laughing. I realized and bit my lip, an image of one of Daryl's arrows going through Leon's heart came into my mind. "Abby?" He questioned me.
I pulled out his grasp and looked down, becoming serious again. "It's gettin' late." I said. "We should, uh…we should turn in." I nodded. "I'll keep watch."
"Nah, you don't gotta. I will." He offered.
"No." I turned him down. "You need to be rested. You're more important because you're our tracker."
"Okay." I heard him say lowly after some time.
I sat down on a log facing away from him with my eyes sadly casted down. I remembered my little sister's words from the other night. She was right about one thing, but wrong about the other.
The next day, Daryl and I came across a car garage on the road. I've seen it before when I've been out on runs, which means we weren't that far from home. We checked it out and made sure it was clear. There were some food remains and other stuff like dirty blankets.
"Someone definitely was holed up here." Daryl picked up a can and stiffed it. "It couldn't've been that long ago neither."
"You think it was them?" I asked hopeful.
"Probably." He nodded.
I turned my head and glanced at one of the blankets. Spotting something on it, I went to it and picked it up examining the red stains on it. "This is blood." I stated. An idea hit me. "The guy I shot." I said wide-eyed. "I bet this is from him." I nodded.
Daryl gave me a nod. "C'mon. Maybe we can catch up to 'em if we're quick." He headed for the exit and gave my shoulder a squeeze as he walked by me.
We were walking with Daryl in the lead. "Listen," he started, I gave his back a curious look. "If we catch up to them guys—
"When." I corrected him.
"When we catch up to them guys…don't go in guns blazin'." He said. "We gotta plan fer this. Scope out the area first."
"But if we hit them first, they won't see it coming and—
"And we will." He turned slightly. "But I'm just tellin' ya ahead 'a time." He turned back. "I know yer mad and ya want revenge fer yer dad but…sometimes that makes ya do thangs ya normally wouldn't do."
"I'll be fine." I held up my head.
He was quiet for a minute. "Well still…'member what I said."
"Hm." I said and walked passed him.
It was sometime in the evening right before it gets dark when we heard voices in the woods. We stopped to listen then followed where the voices were coming from. We stayed back a distance away and scoped out the area like Daryl said. There were four guys. That's not right. I thought. There should be five. Maybe one of them didn't make it.
My eyes landed on the guy that was in our house. He killed my dad. I suddenly got that feeling in my stomach like when someone jumps out and scares you and my eyes widened. I have a perfect aim on him, I could do it…right now. My breathing quickened as I stared him down and my heart started beating like crazy. Before I knew what I was doing, I pointed my gun at him.
"No!" Daryl yell-whispered at me and pushed my hand over. But it was too late, I already pulled the trigger. The bullet hit a tree. Daryl and I locked eyes for a moment, then looked at the men. They obviously heard the gunshot and were looking our way. "Go." Daryl said to me. "Go!"
But as soon as we turned around, sure enough, there was guy number five with his gun on us. "Hey there." He said then grinned sickly. "How 'bout you put them weapons down so we can talk, huh?"
Shit. Daryl and I looked at each other, he glared at me. We slowly put our weapons on the ground.
Daryl and I were sitting on the ground, we were surrounded by the five men. They all had guns on us. Things obviously didn't go as planned, I had no idea what was going to happen now.
"Let's see," one of the men said, "which one of you is the talker?"
Daryl and I just glared at the man.
"So where y'all from?" One of the guys asked us.
"None of your business." I snapped.
The first guy who talked to us had a switch from a tree in his hand, he gave me a switch right across my face under my left eye. I gasped and my head turned in that direction. My eyes were wide and I touched where he hit me, it was bleeding already. At first, it was the shock of it. Now it was starting to hurt. It stung pretty badly.
"It'll be worse next time." He said and crouched down in front of us. "So how about you cooperate with us and tell us where you're from?" We stayed silent. "That's how it's gonna be, huh?" He stood up. "How about this?" He raised his gun and was about to shoot one of us. My eyes widened.
"Hey, wait a minute." One of the guys said. It was the one who killed my dad. "I recognize y'all." He pointed at us. "Yeah. I remember now."
"You know them?"
"They're from Alexandria." He said. "I saw 'em. In a house." He pointed at me. "This one shot me."
"I hope it hurt." I said and evilly glared at him.
He stared at me and crouched down in front of me. "Is that right?" We stared at each other intensely. "It did hurt…but you know what felt good?" He grinned sickly. "Lightin' up that man upstairs in the bedroom." He said. I exhaled angrily though my nose. He smiled. I could tell he liked that I was mad. "I bet…that was your dad, huh?" He continued to tease me and make me even angrier. "I can see the resemblance." He touched my face, I tried to pull away but he still touched me. He pulled my skin down where I got cut. It hurt which was hard to hide. "I hope that hurt." He grinned. "That woman upstairs with your dad, she jumped down beside the bed. My only regret is not getting her too. And the little one down the hall."
I was so angry by that time that I couldn't control myself. Bringing my little sister into this is what really set me off. That feeling from before came back, my breathing quickened along with my heart and before I even realized what I was doing, I lunged forward for his gun. Someone fired and I flew sideways.
"Abby!" Daryl yelled.
I looked up wide-eyed. My ears were ringing so loud, I couldn't hear a damn thing. That all happened so fast that my brain didn't have time to register it. I finally came back to the now and realized that I was the one who got shot. My hand flew to the side of my head. I felt my ear and knew it was still there. The bullet just grazed me. Still…I was bleeding. I breathed out.
"You fuckin' bastard!" Daryl yelled at him.
"Want me to do it?" The guy asked while aiming his gun at Daryl.
"No." The other said. "We might need them. We'll take them with us."
I was still kind of in shock so the next thing that happened was kind of a blur. Daryl and I were thrown into the back of a truck. Once they put the back down, it was pitch black in there.
Pulling out my iPod, I used it for some light. "C'mere." Daryl said. He pulled out his bandana and held it where I got shot, then he made me lay down using his leg as a pillow.
"We're in some trouble now." I said.
"Yeah, I know." He kind of snapped.
We were in the truck for hours with the guys driving. It felt like we were driving straight and there weren't many turns, which means they were on a main road. We must be far from home now.
Finally, the truck stopped. It sounded like they got out. I sat up quickly, we were both on alert. The back opened, it was broad daylight outside now which meant it was the next day. I shielded my eyes from the brightness.
The next thing I knew, I was dragged out of the truck by my arm along with Daryl. It looked like we were in a cornfield. "Let's go." The guy holding onto to me said. He guided us to a house but instead of going inside, they took us down to a basement. It was like a whole other house down there.
"What is this place?" I asked feeling out of it.
"Don't worry about it." He said. We were shoved into a room that had a mattress on the floor and that was pretty much it. There was one window but it was pretty high up the wall.
And idea occurred to me. "You kept people here?" I asked wide-eyed.
The guy grinned at me. "None of your business." He mocked me from earlier. He closed the door leaving us there.
A few seconds later, it opened back up. "Here." One of the guys threw some bandages on the floor. "Patch yourself up." Then he closed and locked the door again.
I slowly glanced at Daryl. He was already looking at me, he walked over and picked up the bandages without saying anything. "Here." He said. There was only enough for my head/neck. The cut on my cheek would have to wait. I still hadn't seen what it looked like.
"How bad is it?" I asked.
"Not bad." Daryl said. "But he didn't give us any disinfectant. It'll get infected if it's not taken care of."
"Great." I sighed and slowly slid down the wall sitting down. "Well…I got no idea how we're gettin' outta this." I let out a laugh.
"Yeah." Daryl turned to me with an annoyed look. "Thanks to you."
I looked to see if he was being serious. "Me?" I questioned and stood up. I got up too quickly and had to grab the wall because I was a little dizzy. "Did I hear that right?"
"Yeah, ya did." He snapped. "You shot at that guy after I said not to."
"Yeah, I would've got him too if you hadn't shoved me!" I snapped. "They still would've saw us but we'd at least be down one guy. But no, you had to try and stop me. And we still got noticed anyway!"
"We'd be exactly where we are now."
"Maybe not." I said. "We could've handled them. The two of us."
"Oh yeah? Against four other guys? Don't be stupid." He turned around. "That guy in the woods might've shot one of us." He quickly turned back to me like he suddenly had a change of mind. "That's why I said we needed to scope out the whole area first!" He yelled at me.
"Will you get over yourself?" I snapped. "Stop trying to put the blame on me and start trying to figure a way out of this."
Daryl glared at me and looked like he was about to say something but the door opened, we both turned our full attention to it. "Will you two keep it down?" One of the guys said. "Damn, you're like a married couple in here." He left and slammed the door. Daryl and I shared a look.
Daryl helped me onto his back, then I climbed up his back until I was standing on his shoulders. I was just tall enough now that I could see out the window. "Can ya open it?" Daryl said through clenched teeth. I didn't think I was that heavy.
"There's no latch." I stated. "But we might be able to break it. Those guys will probably hear it though—
Just then, we heard the sound of footsteps and knew that one of them were coming. "Get down. Hurry!" Daryl yell-whispered at me. I jumped off his shoulders and he caught me how a male cheerleader catches a female cheerleader.
Just as my feet touched the ground, the door opened. Daryl still had his hands on my waist. The guy smiled grossly at us. "Am I interrupting something?" My face flushed and I looked away. He laughed. "You." He pointed at me. My eyes widened. "Go with Dustin. He's gonna take you for questioning."
I looked at Daryl. "No." He said and put a hand on my shoulder pushing me back. "Take me instead."
"Oh don't you worry." He said. "You and I are gonna have a little chat in here." He smiled but it faded quickly. "Don't make this hard."
I swallowed hard then took one last look at Daryl before walking out the door. The guy, Dustin I guess, was waiting for me there. My eyes looked up at the door where we came in. I didn't think clearly and bolted towards it. "Hey, get back here!" Dustin ran after me and of course got me because the door was locked. He grabbed me by my shirt and yanked me backwards causing me to fall down the small flight of stairs. I groaned in pain after hitting the floor. That really hurt my arm. Dustin hauled me up by my shirt and started dragging me up the stairs. "Don't try that again."
We went upstairs to a room, it was nicer in there than where Daryl was. Dustin pushed me down and forced me into a chair. I was surrounded by four of them. "Why am I here?" I asked.
"We need information out of you." One of them said.
I gave him a stupid look. "Why? You already know where I'm from and you know how to get there. What else could you possibly want?" I spat.
The guys looked around at each other. "We looked around in your pantry, there was a notebook." He said. "So your community trades with other communities?"
My eyes widened. Shit. My throat suddenly felt dry so I swallowed before speaking. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Yeah you do." Said their leader. "We saw the names: Hilltop, Kingdom, and Oceanside." My heart skipped a beat. I don't think I can lie my way out of this. "We can probably figure out where Oceanside is," he let out a laugh, "but the others we need some help."
I quickly thought of something and started shaking my head. "My dad was the only one who knew about that." I lied. "Only the leaders met, he led Alexandria. And you killed him so…"
"Now I just think you're lying to me." He said again. We stared at each other. "Sorry, what's your name?"
I hesitated. "…Abby."
"Abby." He smiled. "My name's Elio. This is Dustin, Stephen, and Cooper." Stephen was the one that found us. Cooper was the one who killed my dad, I squinted at him. "And Klaus is downstairs with your friend. Elio stood up and backed away a little. "I don't want to have to hurt you, Abby, but we will if we have to." He gave me a serious look. "So I'm gonna ask you again. Where are those communities?"
I shook my head. "I told you, I don't know." I continued to lie.
Elio sighed and put his head down, then he looked up at Stephen and gave him a nod. Stephen punched me hard in the stomach. I grimaced and bent over a little in pain. After I recovered, I looked up breathing heavily.
"Why don't we start with The Kingdom." Elio said. "Where is it?"
"I'm guessing you won't believe me if I say I don't know again?" I said weakly.
Elio gave me a disappointed look. He took a minute to light a cigarette. "Do you know what liars get, Abby?" He said to me. I just looked at him. Suddenly, he grabbed my head and slammed it down on the table then burned the back of my neck with his cigarette. I screamed and screamed as the pain of the burn seemed to be ongoing.
"Where is The Kingdom?" Elio yelled. I didn't answer. He burned me in another spot.
Narrator's POV
Daryl Dixon looked up at the vent in his room, he could hear the voices of the men but couldn't make out what they were saying. But what he could make out was the sound of Abigail screaming in pain. He gritted his teeth angrily knowing there was nothing he could do. He wished it was him.
The man had to just stand there and listen to the young woman scream. He couldn't take it anymore. "What's 'e doin' to her?" He screamed at the man with the gun.
"What he has to." Klaus said and smiled sickly. Daryl glared at the fat man.
Abby's POV
I was recovering from a punch to the face. "I told you. I don't know anything!" I said with tears in my eyes. "My dad was the only one who knew! Him and Michonne." I said accidentally. I meant to say someone else that got killed but my mouth said Michonne. I caught myself and my eyes widened. Why did I just say that?
"Is that the wife?" Elio asked. I didn't answer. I can't believe I said that.
"She definitely is." Said Cooper.
"So this…Michonne…she knows?" Elio asked me. I stayed silent. "Since you won't talk, maybe she will. We'll have to take a little trip back there."
"No!" I yelled.
"We'll head back first thing." Elio said again. "Dustin, get her back in the cell."
"No!" I yelled as Dustin grabbed me. "No! You stay away from there! You hear me? Stay away from my family!" I yelled at them as I was being dragged back downstairs.
Oh no! :O How are Abby and Daryl going to get out of this one? Find out in the next chapter ;)
