A Crepe a Day - "That's a metal bowl!"
Saiki felt no particular way about school. He didn't hate it, but he didn't love it either. Rather he found it boring. Being an all-powerful all-seeing psychic he really didn't need school. But considering he was a teenager it was normal for him to do so. It was a monotonous cycle of life that he would take part in to at the very least attempt to blend in and have some kind of symbolism of normality.
But today was different. Today was a rare event. Saiki was excited to go to school. He was even excited to be going to school with his girlfriend. His girlfriends who had a very specific set of skills that he had come to appreciate above all else. For today in class her skills will be put to the test for today in class he and his fellow classmates would be making–
"Alright kids, listen up today we're making crepes!" Coach Matsuzaki announced.
"That's my cue."
Lotus snickered behind her hand watching Saiki practically teleport out of the room and gear up for the "battle" ahead. A bandana and apron would be his armor for today.
While the rest of his classmates donned white or yellow aprons with white bandanas, Saiki had somehow found a green set. Lotus was beginning to think that was his favorite color.
Filing into the home ec room Lotus took a seat at a nearby table excited. With her parents constantly on the move, she had gotten to witness the varying forms of education all across the globe.
Home Ec was different all across the board. In Iceland, they taught kids to sew and knit. One school was very adamant about proper childcare.
Lotus had never seen herself as a homebody but she absolutely loved cooking. The girls of the class chittered just as excited while most boys groaned at the prospect of having to cook.
Surprisingly enough the teacher who'd be leading today's lesson would be Coach Matsuzaki. He was a man of many talents as it would seem. Donning his own apron (which had cute bears on it) and bandana (which contrasted the bears with pink bunnies) he was ready to go.
"Why is he teaching?"
Lotus shrugged, "Maybe he's secretly a super cook?"
"I don't know how to cook but I printed the recipe so it should be fine," Coach Matsuzaki said.
"Spoke too soon."
Kaidou appeared next to Saiki spouting things the psychic didn't really pay attention to. Kaidou was also dressed in a different apron, black and covered in all skulls.
"Your apron is ridiculous too. Oh well, the only thing that matters is that I like crepes. They're delicious on their own but go well with all kinds of sweets. With crepes, you have an infinite variety with infinite ingredients. And since I have a girlfriend…" Saiki's gaze shifted to Lotus–she was just a table over–who gave the boy a thumbs up. "I'll have double the crepes."
"Just call me your goddess of sweets!"
"Okay commence cooking!" Coach Matsuzaki said.
Lotus was in a team of three with one boy and one girl. They both seemed apprehensive to start, gazing at the board and back at the ingredients on the table like they were staring at some kind of foreign math equation.
The boy grabbed a bowl, "Um so we–"
"I got this!" Lotus smiled. "Baking is my specialty!"
The confidence…her team was ready for the pink-haired psychic to lead the way.
"We're in your hands, Lotus!" Her tablemates were relieved.
Lotus grabbed the bowl and with amazing speed and efficiency started to add ingredients.
"She's not even looking at the recipe," the boy whispered.
"Amazing!" The girl quietly gushed.
"First we wanna mix our dry ingredients. Then after we add in the wet ones."
Her tablemates were in awe as they watched her seamlessly and without a beat crack two eggs with one hand putting them into the batter. She pulled out a whisk mixing the contents of the bowl. Those at her table were entranced.
"It's like watching a cooking show live," Someone mumbled.
"Hey–" Lotus pointed at a girl, the other person on her team, "–get the griddle going."
"U-uh right!"
When everything was whistled properly together she hovered her hand over the griddle.
"Perfect temp!" Lotus grabbed a ladle, scooping a generous amount out of the bowl. "Now we–"
"That's a metal bowl!"
Lotus looked over her back only to gasp as a microwave exploded.
So it turned out Hairo and Kaidou were terrible cooks. During their cooking experience, Hairo had added a full stick of butter only to have Kaidou realize that it was supposed to be melted butter. Their solution was to put the metal bowl in the microwave.
Now the duo were on their knees, head bowed as Coach Matsuzaki tore into them over the now destroyed microwave. At least that's the only damage they did. The chaos they created was a momentary distraction for the class but once the excitement died down everyone got back to work.
"Okay, guys," Lotus picked up the bowl and ladle, "here we go. Pour the batter into the center of the oiled pan. Make sure not to add too much. Then shift the pan around to spread the batter on the pan to make a nice thin layer."
It was amazing watching as her tablemates pulled out notebooks taking notes as they nodded along with what Lotus was doing.
"If you have any issues with spreading the batter you can use a tool like a pair of chopsticks. You let the crepe cook until the edges start to slightly brown and bubbles form at the top. Next, you gently want to flip it over."
Lotus raised the pan, flicking her wrist. The crepe soared out of the pan doing a 180 and landing back in the pan on the other side.
"Amazing!" Her tablemates clapped.
"If you can't flip your crepes no problem just use a spatula to get it over. Allow the crepe to cook just a bit longer and then you're done. Fill it with your favorite ingredients and top it off."
Lotus assembled her crepes on a plate. "And there you have it."
"Oh wow! They look delicious."
Lotus stood proudly as her tablemates dug into their crepes.
"Try my famous tuna fish crepes!" Nendou's loud voice echoed.
"Tuna fish…crepes?"
Looking over at the table of her boyfriend she saw the poor psychic turning pale. On the table was a set of crepes cooked by Nendou. They looked great except for the fact that they were stuffed with tuna.
"Hey, guys!" Lotus made her way over to the table. "I've got plenty of extras if you wanna try?"
Was it their imagination or was a beam of light coming from the heavens shining upon the delectable plate within Lotus's hands? A set of perfectly crafted crepes, each one stuffed with its own sweet filling and topped off with either chocolate, fruit, or frosting. It was like heaven on a plate and it was sure to be heaven in one's mouth as well.
"Whoa, those look amazing!" Hairo said.
"Like something out of a restaurant!" Kaidou added.
Saiki didn't hesitate to snatch up one of his girlfriend's crepes. It was even better than he thought it'd be. After the tragedy that was his group, the crepe tasted even sweeter. And was he detecting a hint of the bitterness of coffee? It was a perfect contrast to the fudgy filling. This was a crepe Lotus made just for him, he knew it.
She really was his goddess of sweets.
Hunting. Stalking prey. Running wild. Getting your leg caught in a hunter's trap and then losing said leg.
Those were the days for Yami the wolf. Some things he missed, other things…not so much. Thinking about that trap that had caught his leg still pissed him off. He was always so cautious but that thing had been hidden so well.
He spent days in that thing only to be discovered by a set of poachers looking to sell him to the highest bidder. Turned into a fur coat or stuffed and mounted on someone's wall. Yami wasn't sure what his fate would be. But–
"Yami!"
A brilliant smile, warm gentle eyes, with an even gentler touch. A hand ran down his fur, going from his head to his back, making sure to stop on that special spot just behind his ear.
"I'm off to school. I left you food in your bowl. Have fun!" Lotus smiled, waving Yami off before leaving the house.
But Yami never would've imagined that his fate would lead him to Lotus. No longer did he have to hunt and scavenge for food, instead he had gourmet meals fed to him each day, he was sure that some humans didn't even eat as well as he did.
The elements were not a bother, he got to sleep in a warm fluffy bed and if it got too hot or cold he could venture indoors.
Lotus and the rest of the Yamaguchi family–Ethan included–took great care of him. He never knew he'd enjoy baths and having his coat brushed out so much. Even having his claws trimmed was a relaxing luxury.
His wound had been tended to and with the amazing craftsmanship of VI, he had all four limbs. The woman saw him as a passion project. Coming up with new ways to improve his prosthetic. There were days when the stump ached and itched but Lotus always took care of him.
Everything was great. And now that Lotus was off to school it was time to get the day started.
Yami yawned, raising his head. Stretched his body, bowing his head to the floor and working out a kink in his back.
"~Welp….time to get started.~"
After Yami's meal, he made his way to the backyard. Ethan worked from home so it wasn't hard for the wolf to get the young man's attention to open the backdoor.
The man was…a clown in Yami's canine eyes. Well, meaning but a goofball. Ethan didn't really walk around the house but the weather danced like he constantly had a jaunty tune playing in his head. At least he had a kind heart plus Yami couldn't deny he enjoyed the various accessories that the man crafted for him.
Stepping into the backyard, paws padding on the back deck, Yami took a seat. His eye scanned the well-sized perfectly manicured lawn. This seemed to be a passion project for the entire Yamaguchi clan. Ethan maintained the grass and kept the yard decorated to match the season, VI and Lotus tended to the various flowers that grew around the area, and a small rock garden in the corner was cared for by the entire family.
Yami, sometimes joined by Sir Henry, liked to lay out and have lazy days when the weather was nice. Not too hot, and not too cold. But right now that wasn't what the wolf had in mind.
Yami's head slowly swiveled across the yard, eyes roaming over it.
"~Lets see…hmm…~"
The wolf's head stopped.
"~Ah, there he is.~"
He sucked at hiding, truly. Yami was sure that if he were in the wild he'd be dead meat. Oh, well, that just made his job easier.
A tuft of blue hair sticking out of a bush in the corner, as if attempting to blend in with the flowers that bloomed from the shrubs. The white flowers. Yami shook his head. He almost felt bad for the poor guy.
Almost.
The bush moved, a head popping out with a pair of binoculars attached to the face.
"Where is she? Where is she…?" A frustrated Makoto grumbled.
The bushes moved some more as a camera came out ready to snap some photos. Makoto glanced through the lens in hopes of finding his pink-haired goddess–why that idiot thought Lotus would be home on a school day was beyond normal logic–only to find nothing but empty blackness through the lens.
Makoto blinked and pulled it away, coming face to face with Yami.
"Uh…"
"~You might wanna run.~"
Makoto might not be able to read Yami's mind but he could see the threat glinting in the wolf's eyes. He took off, leaves stuck to his person.
"~Well that takes care of that.~"
Sorry about the short one, this is more like a filler chapter.
