Chapter: The Wall
Agent Twilight liked to believe that he wasn't a killer. But during the course of his illustrious career he had killed his fair share of people. He didn't like it, never enjoyed it, he wasn't what you might term a cold blooded killer; it was just something he had to do for the sake of the mission.
Like most men and women who entered the world of espionage and counter intelligence, he had a military background. He pledged his life to the nation, went to war for the country and killed in the name of the fatherland.
But Agent Twilight was dead. He was Loid Forger now, a husband, a father, a family man. But they have a famous saying in their line of work – 'A spy is twice useful when he's dead.'
Technically he was in a new line of work, a better job, a safer job, but if you ask him it felt more or less like the same thing. Government Agent. Special Consultant. Freelancer – A difference without a difference.
Loid's latest case felt like a botched operation. The number of dead bodies told him the Americans were involved. But he had to remind himself that this was Ikebukuro they were talking about. A number of other things and agencies might be involved. It was better not to jump to conclusions.
Stumbling upon a dead body in a strange looking costume with its head blown off by an explosive and working on a hunch, checking the Interpol database and cross-referencing with known super-villains, led to a positive match.
The deceased went by the moniker of Captain Boomerang, a well known villain of the superhero Flash. Loid mentally chided himself a little for not figuring it out much sooner. Who else had so many boomerangs in his possession? But to his credit, George Harkness was found dead far away from home, in Ikebukuro of all places.
It didn't make sense.
Until it did.
Agent Twilight had heard about Amanda Waller. He had even heard whispers about her so called Suicide Squad, a covert operations team full of well known super-villains and assassins. But like any sane individual, he had dismissed the whole thing as an office rumour propagated near the water cooler. You would have to be pretty insane to think a bunch of hardened criminals, mercenaries and psychopaths could band together, work as a team and achieve a common objective.
Guess, the rumours were true. Like the kids say these days, Amanda Waller was off her rocker.
Now as much as Loid would have liked to confront Waller, it was more than likely that she wasn't even in Japan and was probably just overseeing the entire debacle take place from her workspace in America, and getting live updates from her subordinates, normal office workers, who were too afraid to speak the truth in fear of incurring her wrath and getting imprisoned in a black site holding cell for his transgression to question her authority.
Since jumping on a plane and travelling to the other side of the planet was out of the question, Loid had to work with what he got – the dead body of Captain Boomerang.
Author's Note: Hey everyone! Betrayed Dreams here. Just wanted to let you know that I'm still working on 'The Ikebukuro Series'…However, like with "A Bohemian Hikigaya's Rhapsody", I'm still figuring out the first couple of chapters. As you might remember, it took a few attempts, a few trial and errors, before I figured out how to write that story.
Well, the same thing is happening with, "A Rhapsody of Twilight and Thorn". I fully intended to write an awesome chapter. And I knew, The Suicide Squad would be involved. But it was when I was writing this chapter and how I was writing it, that I figured out something I needed, something I was looking for, a particular badass confrontation, that I skipped in this version of the chapter.
Tell me, you don't want to see "Agent Twilight" go up against "Amanda Waller"!
It was only when I wrote it, that I realized, no way am I gonna miss out on this confrontation.
So yeah, I'm gonna delete this chapter – And the first chapter is gonna feature "Agent Twilight" Vs "Amanda Waller"
