Steve was walking back to the labour ward with Alex in his arms when he passed the chapel again. His son was fast asleep in another milk coma after feeding from his mother. Kate too was a little exhausted after her surgery and had needed a little nap. Steve had left her bedside with a promise to return a little later.
Remembering Pastor Pete's last words to him, Steve decided to quickly duck inside and update the vicar on Kate's progress. The chapel was as quiet and deserted as it had been earlier that morning. "Hello?" said Steve in to the room, his voice slightly echoing around him.
One of the doors that led off the main room opened and Pete stuck his head out.
"Hi!" Greeted Steve.
"Hello Steve!" Pete said as he entered the chapel fully. "Just doing a little admin. Nice to see you again. How are things?".
"A lot better," Steve replied gratefully. "Kate made it through the surgery. She's in the ITU at the moment. She lost a lot of blood and is a little exhausted but she'll be ok,".
"Glad to hear it," Pete said as he approached Steve. "And is this the little trouble maker?" He asked, gesturing to the baby in Steve's arms.
"Not so little," Steve retorted. "Eight pounds ten ounces," he informed the vicar proudly ," although probably a bit more now after his last feed,".
The vicar chuckled as Steve's phone rang. "Shall I take him?" Pete offered. Steve deposited Alex in to the vicar's arms. He'd held many a baby at christenings and was perfectly comfortable with the new born.
Steve fished his phone out of his pocket and took the call. It was his mum. "Hi Mum," he greeted as he moved off a little way.
"How's Kate?" His mother asked. "Your Dad said you'd gone to see her,".
"She's ok, Mum. A little tired but she's going to be ok. Alex had a good feed and now they're both fast asleep,".
"When will you be home?" Mrs Arnott asked. "Josh and Ava are both waiting to see you,".
"They're gonna let me and Alex home later this afternoon," Steve informed his mum. "Kate will be in a few more days,".
"Josh will be really glad to see you. He's very worried about his mum. At least I have some good news for him,".
"And Ava?".
"She's been a bit more clingy than usual but now Grandpa is home she's getting spoilt by him,".
"I'll let you two deal with her sugar high," Steve replied, knowing that his dad was giving Ava a lot of chocolate and sweets. It's what Grandpa's are for, Mr Arnott had informed Steve when he had once caught his father giving his daughter a sneaky sweet.
"See you later," Mrs Arnott said before hanging up.
Steve turned around and saw that Alex was now awake in Pete's arms, being entertained by the vicar as he pointed out various interesting things around the chapel to the baby.
"Thanks for that," Steve said as he returned to where Pete and Alex were. "Just my mum phoning for an update. Your brother and sister can't wait to meet you," Steve directed to his youngest as he put his phone away. Kate's ring on his finger catching in the fabric of his trousers. "Shit!" exclaimed Steve before realising he'd just sworn in front of a clergyman. "Sorry," he apologised, embarrassed as he took Alex back in to his arms
"I've heard worse," Pete said.
"I just realised I forgot to give Kate her ring back," Steve said. "I'll do it next time I see her,".
"And start planning your big day,".
"Not so big," Steve said. "We'd both be happy with something small and intimate. Just family," he continued as an idea suddenly popped in to his head. "You don't do weddings do you?".
"Kate will you marry me?" Steve asked the next day. He'd come in to the hospital with Alex for a visit and was now by Kate's bedside as Alex was feeding.
Kate looked up to see Steve with her engagement ring in his hands before realising it wasn't on her ring finger. "How did you-".
"They gave it to me for safe keeping," Steve interrupted.
"I don't think you have to propose every time you put the ring on my finger," Kate teased. "Besides, you already know my answer,".
"No," retorted Steve. "I mean will you marry me in the next couple of days?".
"What are you talking about?" Kate asked very puzzled.
"I made friends with the hospital chaplain whilst you were in surgery," Steve admitted. "I was with him again yesterday when this idea came to me. Why don't we just get married here? We can do the big party later when you've fully recovered but I just want to get married to you now. What do you say?".
"Are you mad?" Kate retorted.
"I don't think so," Steve said. "Pastor Pete-".
"Oh! Pastor Pete is lovely!" Kate's nurse interrupted after hearing the vicar's name being mentioned. "He's great with all the relatives when he comes here to ITU,".
"Does he do weddings?" Kate asked the nurse. "Steve wants us to get married here,".
"He's a proper vicar, Kate. Of course he does weddings," Steve defended the clergyman.
"How exciting," the nurse , focusing on Kate's last sentence. This didn't happen often at work.
"I look a mess," Kate said. "I don't have a dress. I know I don't want a big ceremony but I'm not getting married in a bloody hospital gown," she argued.
"Our ITU receptionist's daughter has a bridal dress salon. I'm sure she'd help out," the nurse revealed, thinking she was being helpful.
"Wonderful," Steve replied. He turned to Kate expectantly. "Well?".
"This is absolutely crazy," Kate said as she shook her head in wonderment. Something inside her knew she was going to accept.
Three days later Kate was being wheeled to the hospital chapel in a wheelchair that the ITU nurses had lovingly decorated. She was wearing a simple white maxi dress embellished with beads and sequins that was fairly loose fitting and didn't aggravate her abdominal wound. In her lap was a bouquet of bright flowers that one of the other nurses had made. Word had got out about the wedding and everyone was keen to assist in some way. She'd had a wash, blow dry and style from another nurse and a manicure from another.
Entering the chapel, Kate saw a few floral decorations had been added as well that matched her bouquet. Steve's parents were sat on the front row. Steve's mum had Alex in her arms, Ava was sat between her grandparents and Josh was sat beside Mr Arnott. A few of the nursing staff from the ITU that had helped, filled the other seats to witness the marriage.
Steve was stood next to Pete waiting for her at the end of the aisle. She'd met Pastor Pete when he had come to introduce himself to her in the ITU after she had accepted Steve's proposal for the second time and agreed with everyone that he was a lovely man.
Josh left his seat and pushed his mother down the aisle as Kate was still fairly weak on her feet. Reaching her destination however, Kate was adamant that she stand for the simple ceremony. With Josh and Steve's help she was able to get out of the wheelchair and stand beside Steve as Pete finally made them man and wife.
