9x01 - Missing Scene
Donna tells him to go home, put on his armor, and fight for Robert's good name. The exact encouragement he needs. Otherwise he isn't sure he'd be able to quell the burning desire to confess everything he's wanted to say to her for over a decade but didn't know how.
She's his compass. She knows the timing isn't right, and therefore he knows it, too. But leaving is still hard. He feels complete, yet incomplete without his limbs tangled around her body and no space to spare between them.
His hand twitches, the result of holding himself back. "I'll see you in the office."
She smiles shyly. The moment is odd, not bad odd, but different. There's no flippant banter, none of his usual cockiness or her witty confidence. It's them, but it isn't, and she quietly agrees. "You will."
He leans down, his lips brushing the top of her hair, and her eyes flutter closed. He lingers, the tips of his fingers brushing hers, and she gently reminds him it's okay—their relationship can coexist with the world outside. "I'll see you soon."
He nods, but three strides away from her he stops. Robert needs him. The firm needs him. Their friends need him. And he'll be there for them. He'll go in swinging, do whatever he has to, but there's something he needs first.
Pivoting, he watches Donna's confusion spill into a smile, and he grins.
This is new, but it's them, and they each take a simultaneous step, his hands on her waist and hers in his hair as their lips crash together. She's always been like a drug he needs to sustain himself, but now there's a physical addiction as well, and when they part, he feels ready to take on anything. "Do me a favor?"
She recognizes the glint in his eyes, because nothing about the moment is odd or awkward anymore. He's being cocky, and she confidently quirks an eyebrow as he bends down.
"Think of me while you're in the shower."
His smirk tickles her ear, and she blushes, swallowing a laugh. "Go."
He does, smiling like an idiot the whole way home.
And later, when the perfect time arises to tell her what changed, he finally feels whole and complete.
