"What?! You and Kuran are going to stay here?"

All of a sudden Ryuichi san and Kuran have decided not to go. At first it seemed they'd follow us whether I liked it or not. And now out of nowhere, they've changed their minds in a matter of seconds. Why? It was hard not to question their reasons for it.

"Sorry about that, I really am. I forgot that Kuran and I have some leftover things to do here, silly me."

"It's nothing big, really~ Just some simple chores that's all~ You guys don't have to worry about it~"

"Besides, you seemed like you didn't want us to tag along, Itou. So there, now you've got your wish."

"I did, but..."

"It's a shame we couldn't join along~ But hey, there's always tomorrow!~"

Ryuichi san and Kuran kept saying not to worry. I want to believe them, but there's no way that alarm triggered by itself. Something was definitely happening here, and there were already a few points that I've started to notice. My gut told me that I had to know.

"But then what was that alarm for? And that blue dot on the map?"

"Oh you saw that, Chihiri san?~ That was... Ryuichi san's units!~ He sent some of them for groceries before I brought you guys here~"

"Yeah, just like Kuran said. I'm planning to make some new dishes for dinner. That alarm was probably them doing some unnatural things. I should warn them not to get in fights when going outside."

"I thought you said you were gonna grab a bite outside, Ryuichi san."

"It's freaking groceries, Itou. It's for the whole week, not just today."

Ryuichi san started to show some attitude from his words. Funny, why would he take it seriously when he can just simply say he forgot? That was when my suspicion turned to certainty.

"Then why didn't you send them in the same way as Descendant's? That way they wouldn't be able to use their powers and risk getting noticed."

"Huh? How'd you know that other units can also take human form?"

"I didn't. It was just a guess, but thanks to you I'm now sure."

"... Probably slipped my mind. I'll try to remember that next time. Look, are you going or not?"

"Say Kuran, why did it say caution for your own units to use their powers outside? You and Ryuichi san would know if they get out of line since you're their pioneers. It would only make sense if the one who used it's power is someone who you don't know. What do you think?"

"Uh, umm... T, That's a g, good point!~ S, Say~ shouldn't you two be going?~ Amaterasu is w, waiting you know~"

Soon Chihiri also got her answer from testing out Kuran.

Ryuichi san and Kuran both acted natural as if everything's fine. Their explanation for the alarm and all were also believable, but it was just that, acting, and even that was starting to slip. There was a limit on how much they can keep fooling us without expecting me or Chihiri to figure stuff out. The two weren't just hiding the truth from us. For some reason they were desperately trying to send us on our way, as if they were trying to get rid of us from this place.

I noticed Ryuichi san and Kuran knew that we weren't having any of it, and that they were sick of their own lies. Me and Chihiri looked at each other and we both agreed that enough is enough. We confronted Ryuichi san and Kuran for the truth.

"Ryuichi san, most of what you're saying doesn't add up. You didn't mention that you've called units aside Linchu, Thunderstorm and Demolition and neither did Descendant. Also if you actually did, there's no way you're going to go and buy something to eat yourself, when there's already someone who can buy it for you."

"...Hmph."

"Now allow me to unfold this curtain of lies! Kuran, your mistake was trying to send me and Chihiri out of here."

"Huh?~ W, Why is that-"

"Because, if it really was just some simple chores to settle, you would've still tried to tag along with us. Cause you're a good kid who likes to help people. Which means this chore that you're saying is so dangerous, that it takes both you and Ryuichi san to even handle, which honestly I can't even imagine what the hell it is."

"Uuuu... R, Ryuichi san? Can I just say it?"

Kuran grew nervous and was about to spill the beans. But before she could, Ryuichi san raised his hand as if telling Kuran to wait.

"Before that. What made you two think that we're lying?"

"That's simple."

"Cause we're not stupid."

These two may have gotten their stories straight with each other and did act accordingly, but they forgot one important thing when it came to tricking people. Their own faces. Don't get me wrong, it's not like they've acted so poorly that the truth was right in their faces. In fact they managed pretty well, just not as subtle.

Their eyes kept going to the screen whenever they had the chance. Their lips slightly twitched whenever we asked questions, as if they were thinking of a new excuse. It's these kinds of small details that they've missed. Furthermore, their whole mood has changed as I couldn't feel the same energy in their words after the alarm, which could only mean one thing.

They couldn't convince themselves that everything was okay.

After thinking to myself I chuckled a bit. I couldn't help to be both proud, and hate myself that I know this kind of thing. Soon Ryuichi san sighed, frowning as he rubbed the middle of his forehead.

"Fuck it, I give up. All right guys, you've earned it so here's the truth. The blue marker you saw on the map, that's a signal of something powerful appearing within five kilometers from this shop. And the worst part is, it just so happens to be approaching right towards us."

Me and Chihiri looked at the map one more time. It was like Ryuichi san said. I didn't remember the exact location where the blue dot started from, but even I could know that it had already moved a few blocks.

"Do you know who it is?"

"Yeah. Can't you zoom in or enhance it to find out or something?"

"Unfortunately Chihiri, no. The map's simplified so I wouldn't invade anyone's privacy, remember? A decision that I'm sort of regretting right now... To be honest, I don't even know if it's even human."

"So... when you say that thing's powerful, just how strong are you talking about?"

"...I'll be honest Chihiri san, Itou san. The alarm's supposed to go off when it sense's someone as strong as us, or even stronger. Ryuichi san made it that way so that we'll know what we're up against. Or in case either one of us... crosses the line. I'm glad it isn't the latter, but who or even what 'that' is, it's power matches me or Ryuichi san."

"Do you think... it's hostile?"

"I've been in quite a lot of battles Chihiri. I've learned that there's two reasons why someone would approach another. Make peace, or make war."

Descendant said as she crossed her arms, glaring at the moving dot on the map. She was tense. So did Ryuichi san and Kuran. These two are the most powerful persons we know. What did they have to fear? But they did. They were visably anxious.

Ryuichi san and Kuran both have a limitless army that they can call upon, with forces that surpasses everything that humanity has to offer. They're dangerously strong, but instead of harming these two want to use their powers to protect people. And yet there was another, one who's strong as they were. But did this one THINK the same? We had no idea. And that's what made it so frightening.

If they were worried, me and Chihiri weren't far behind.

"But uh, why can't all of us go find Amaterasu? If Itou gets her back we'll have three people to fight! Safety in numbers! I wish I could say four but... I'd probably get in the way so I'll be the one to head back home. All alone... A, Anyways! Wouldn't that be a better decision?"

That IS the most logical choice. If that person, or thing is as strong as these two think, then splitting forces is a bad idea. Sure I'm still a liability, but if I can persuade Amaterasu to fight with us, we could definitely be of help fighting back this opponent.

But there was a sign of worrisome in Ryuichi san's eyes. What we thought to be logical wasn't the same as Ryuichi san or Kuran. Ryuichi san took turns looking at me and then Chihiri, until he said in a tone as if he was about to say something against his will.

"I'm afraid it's not that simple. That thing on the monitor is coming closer and closer to here. I installed barriers around the shop and this entire hideout that cloaks any hints of spiritual energy that we're emitting. And out of all the places it could go, that thing is STILL walking towards here, which could only mean one thing. That thing not only knows about us being here, it knows about our hideout as well."

"...Oh shit."

"So you guys are staying here because..."

"I'm afraid so you two. If Ryuichi san and I don't stop that thing here, it could take over this hideout."

Things were much dire that I thought. This underground hideout wasn't built just to have a place to hang out. The high tech machinery and weapons, training grounds for improving combat, a super computer with access to maybe the entire city, this place is legitimately their command center. It's not like Ryuichi san and Kuran wanted to be here. They HAD to be here because they knew all to well what this place is capable of doing.

"So, let's 'assume' this place is taken over. What kind of damage are we expecting?..."

Chihiri's question was not out of admiration and excitement as before, but out of fear in the possibility of a weapon that could be turned against us.

"Our information gets leaked. Our homes gets marked and bombarded by energy cannons. And worse case scenario... Self destruct protocol activates and half of Tokyo gets blown away from unstable antimatter explosion."

"O, Oh my god! Why the hell would you make that kind of stuff?!"

"Trust me. I HAVE MY REASONS."

Ryuichi san suddenly reacted dead serious when I questioned his reasons of having something so dangerous. For a moment his eyes went vicious, like he was going to rip my head off if I questioned him again. As I backed down Ryuichi san realized and acted calm as if nothing happened. I'll probably never understand his reasons are, but now was not the time to dwell on that. The thoughts of all the mayhem that could, and will happen if this place is taken over, was giving me enough of a headache as it is.

"Then what should WE do? Is there some way we can help?"

"Yeah. Get out of here and get back Amaterasu."

"...We're not much of a help, are we?"

"Sorry to say it, but yeah. Once you get her back, don't come back and just go home. The last thing I want is you guys getting in my way."

"Ryuichi san, that's harsh! Itou san, Chihiri san, I, I'm sure he doesn't mean that."

"No, we get it. Besides, even if we did have Amaterasu, Itou couldn't call her to fight without risking himself to die."

"...Damn it..."

I looked down, only to see my reflection off the glass floor. The face I'm seeing, was a confused idiot who didn't have a clue what to do. I looked so pathetic that it was infuriating.

I clenched my fist to the point my nails sank into my fist. I was so helpless. This wouldn't be a problem if I could call other units like Kuran and Ryuichi san. But since Amaterasu is my only unit, I couldn't even call her without risking my own life. If Amaterasu was still here we could've thought of a way to help, but then I had to fuck up that too.

And the worst part is, I still didn't understand why Amaterasu left. When I'm supposed to be her pioneer, her partner of all people!

Why did Amaterasu pick me as her pioneer? Why? All I've done until now was getting everyone in trouble.

If. If Amaterasu haven't chose me, at least she would've been spared from the failure that was me. But it was too late. I've hurt her. Just like I hurt my parents. Just like I hurt Chihiri...

I shouldn't have said yes. I should have saved Amaterasu the trouble. I shouldn't have... become her pioneer.

"Yoo hoo~ Can you hear me?~"

"Wh, What?"

A new face was staring right back at me. Only this time it wasn't my own reflection. Instead it was Kuran cheerfully smiling at me. My hand suddenly felt warm, and then I realized Kuran was holding my hand. The warmth of her hand felt like it was spreading through my body, a cozy feeling as if I was bathing in warm sunlight.

"Itou san. Are you proud of Amaterasu?"

Kuran asked me with a faint smile. At first I had to really think what she meant. It was certainly one question I didn't see it coming. I thought this was one of her pranks, but her sincere and yet somewhat sad tone told me that she was not. I could just say yes, but then why would Kuran even ask a simple question like that? And why now? What was she trying to say to me?

"What... are you saying?"

"You see Itou san, when our units decide us as their pioneer, do you know what that means? It means that they've made one of the biggest, and the most proudest decision in their lives."

"...What? Proudest? But, look at me! I've done nothing but fail her! And in the end, she ran away. She probably realized that I wasn't worth being her pioneer."

"No, I'm sure she wouldn't~"

said Kuran without a second of hesitation. Her words of confidence irritated me a little. Kuran wasn't Amaterasu, and yet she was speaking as if she's her. It was not like Kuran to say this so inappropriately. Who was she to judge what isn't hers?

"How do you know?"

[Because, JACKASS!]

"We're the 'main units'!"

It was unexpected for Chain blast and Descendent to suddenly join in. Descendent and Chain blast in his spiritual form, were staring at me, and only me with very serious and stern eyes. The vicious atmosphere that they had felt like a big storm was just about to devour me. My natural instinct felt fear as I froze up in front of them. I couldn't tell if they wanted to talk, or to beat me into a pulp.

[You think I'm going to leave Kuran just because don't like what she does? Bullshit! And screw you Itou, if you even remotely thought of it!]

"What?! B, But I didn't!"

[Really? Because of what you're saying about your own unit, I can't help but to think that you ARE that kind of asshole!]

Roaring his words, Chain blast kept puncturing my chest with his hollow finger, only to keep going through my chest. I was thankful that he didn't take physical form, because judging how he's reacting right now, I'm almost sure he'd stab my chest with his finger.

Meanwhile Descendent, who IS in physical form hasn't laid her hands on me yet. But her eyebrows twitching meant that she just needs an excuse to do the same like Chain blast.

"Chain blast! Calm down! You're going to blow my ear drums if you keep yelling like that!"

"U, Umm-"

"YOU. You don't get to speak! By Nouvelle vague, I've never met such a thick idiot like you! What, do you think this is some kind of joke to you? That Amaterasu is just playing you for shits and giggles?"

"N, No. But..."

"NOT A SINGLE WORD! You listen, and listen good. I didn't choose Ryuichi because he was strong or was talented. Even though he's a Psyqualia user, back then he was a god damn mess. He was weaker, and vulnerable than you. I chose him because I WANTED to. I wanted to stay with Ryuichi, grow stronger with him and believed that he's the one to lead me and my clan! Did I regret my decision? HELL NO!"

Descendant took a quick breather and her barrage seemed to stop, only for Chain blast to take her place as if he was waiting for the chance to yell at me.

[At first the other units thought I was insane. Bringing someone so small and weak to fight for our Kagero. But the moment when we first met, I saw the most bravest girl I've ever seen. Even when I gave her the choice to walk back, she agreed just as I hoped. And I swore, that I'll be there for Kuran no matter what. That I'll protect her until I drew my last breath. That I'll give my everything as she did to us. And guess what, Kuran answered our hope in spades, and there's not a single unit in Kagero who thinks otherwise! Even now I never regret my decision back then, no matter what anyone would say. So you take your stupid words and shove it back into your throat! Because there is no way in HELL! That main units will ever abandon their pioneers! Not us! And certainly not Amaterasu!]

I've never meant to offend them. The things I've said weren't even intended for them. Still Descendant and Chain blast was taking it seriously as if it was personal. All because of some stupid stuff I said. At first it seemed like unreasonable rage. And yet after hearing all that pent-up anger, I could understand their feelings, along with their reasons.

They were proud. Proud of their pioneers. Their decisions of choosing Kuran and Ryuichi san. The bonds between pioneers and units. It wasn't just a contract formed by mutual agreement, and most certainly a parasitic one like what Master beetle had done. This was a bond, something that you could believe and trust, like that of a friend, or maybe even family, a one that's so simple and at the same time so complex. A one that would hurt us the most, but at the end would be the most important thing in our lives. But then, did that mean...

was that what Amaterasu felt about me?

I stood there, still as a rock. Trying to picture every last detail of when Amaterasu left. Her face that tried to cover her despair, the tears that she couldn't hold, and the smile she made it was, as if she didn't want me to worry...

"Guys! Cut. It. Out! Itou san is new to this and is already going through a lot! All you're doing is just bullying him! So leave him alone before I get really angry!"

Stomping the ground with her foot, Kuran stepped in between me and the two dragons. Unlike how they were on my throat just now, Chain blast and Descendent immediately calmed down once Kuran told them to stop. After a few glares at me the two stepped back as Kuran requested.

"Sorry about that Itou san. They have their own pride as a main unit, so they tend to get a little sensitive about this topic."

[Uh, I admit that I got a little overboard. But come on, saying that is basically bad mouthing YOU, Kuran!]

"Still, Chain blast! That's not an excuse to harass Itou san like that! You better apologize to Itou san later!"

I looked at Kuran and Chain blast. They were close to each other. Understood about each other. When I see these two, I saw a strong bond that couldn't be severed by even the strongest force. But these two have known each other way before I even knew them. They WORKED to get this far, which I could understand completely.

"I, It just makes no sense. Why would Amaterasu, have pride in someone like me? We've JUST met. How could I believe the feelings of someone who I don't know? I understand what you guys are saying, but I don't believe. No... I don't deserve that kind of trust..."

"Itou..."

I followed Chihiri's voice as mine and her eyes met. Her sad eyes told me that it's wrong. It's not like I didn't know. My best friend knew it, and some part of me wanted to admit it. But my other half was just too stubborn. It wouldn't believe, wanted to deny, too scared that it might get hurt again. Other than someone I trusted, too much trust only brought pain and disbelief.

This weak, pathetic mind of mine. No matter how much I tried to get rid of it, it always found a way to show the ugliness inside me. If Amaterasu saw this side of myself, I was sure that she'd be disgusted. Because I even hate myself for it.

"Well, whatever happens I'm sure you'll make the right call. Umm, say Itou san, can I say something real quick?"

"...Sure."

"I don't know what's stopping you from accepting Amaterasu's trust. And I'm not gonna ask, or act like I know what you're going through. But I know THIS, Itou san. You won't be able to believe in Amaterasu, if you can't believe in 'yourself'."

Kuran's words was a straight arrow, hitting dead center of my heart. Was that it? Did she honestly think it's that simple? She doesn't know what she's talking about. Does she have any idea how hard that could be? What would happen if it doesn't work? It felt like a typical answer from a simple mind who didn't understand the consequences that comes with it. I should be embarrassed. Ashamed, angry that I had to listen to this from a middle schooler.

There was nothing. Nothing came out of my mouth that could fight back her simple logic. Anything I'd say would be just denial. I kept hating and hating and hating the problems I had inside me. No matter what Amaterasu said about me I just ignored it and kept blaming myself. But did I do anything about it?

No. I denied and it ended up hurting Amaterasu. Getting lectured by a little girl for my problems is embarrassing. Running away from my problems and ending up hurting someone, is just downright pathetic.

"Just think about that on the way there, okay?"

"...I, will. And thanks."

"Come on! What are friends for?~"

Kuran accepted my gratitude with a big smile and an equally big thumbs up. Waving her hands, Kuran ran towards her three called units, probably to discuss about their later plans. Soon after she left I heard a sharp whistle sound. When I turned my head Ryuichi san whistled again, bobbing his fingers up and down. His finger movements were fast as if he was irritated and I bolted to the computer in three seconds flat.

"What is it Ryuichi san?"

"Take this."

"Oof!"

The second I walked to him, Ryuichi san practically shoved my chest with some sort of item he held out. Of course I didn't die or get impaled, but the item he held was hard enough to be quite painful.

"Oh, didn't see you there. Sorry."

"Owww... How about actually facing the person and NOT the computer screen?"

"Again, sorry. There's a lot of things I have to get ready before shit hits the fan. And I would've been a little more comfortable if you guys weren't here and left about five minutes ago."

Ryuichi san casually said with a strangely calm face. Although his actions, especially his fingers were furiously mashing away at the keyboard as if he was a pianist gone insane. If the keyboard wasn't a hologram I'm sure some letters keys would be rolling on the ground. Seeing him trying so hard to hide his anxieties, it seemed like I should be the one who had to apologize.

"I'm... sorry?"

"Don't be. Still, I guess it's not all bad. If you guys already left, I wouldn't have been able to give you guys some weapons."

"Weapons? You mean 'this'?"

I held out the item that Ryuichi san gave me. It was a short metallic cylinder. This blackish silver cylinder was no more than thirty centimeters in length, and thick enough so I could easily hold it with either one or both of my hands. The cylinder was mostly round, but one side of the edge had a few bumps on it that seemed to be there for a more better grip. Whatever this was, it seemed more like a handle then some kind of weapon.

While I was examining the cylinder, Chihiri came running with two backpacks on each of her shoulders.

"Itou, what're you doing with Ryuichi san? It's best we move before it gets even darker outside. Oh, whatcha got there?"

"Perfect timing. I'll give you yours, Chihiri."

said Ryucihi san as he picked another identical cylinder that was lying on the huge console. Chihiri took the cylinder as Ryuichi san gave it to her. She took a few looks at it, swung it at the air a few times, and just like any other person would, she had no idea what this thing does.

"You're kidding right? Good grip though."

"Good to know at least a part of my design gets a pass... Try to tap the bottom part of the cylinder."

"And uh, which part is the bottom?"

"The part where the end is colored orange."

"Right."

I was wondering why only one end of the cylinder was colored, and now I knew. I turned the cylinder upside down so that the colored part would point the ground. I gently tapped the bottom of the cylinder with my hand, and soon so did Chihiri.

A faint ringing sound came from inside the cylinder. Immediately the tip of the cylinder slid open, and then...

Fwoosh

My face was lit by a bright light. A beam of white light soared from the cylinder's opening. The beam halted at a certain height, continuing to maintain it's form. I looked in awe at the glowing pillar in front of me, and realized just what this weapon is.

"Heh, you should see the look on your faces."

"Is this... a sword?"

"Not just a sword! It's a freakin 'laser' sword!"

"Not looking so lame now, does it? I call it the prism blade but sure, name it all you want. But be care-"

Chihiri was excited like a kid at Christmas morning. She took multiple swings at the empty space, and a faint ringing sound came from the blade everytime she swung. This made Chihiri even more excited as she swung the blade in more exaggerated ways, as if she was in a samurai movie.

I couldn't deny how cool it must feel and wanted to try it out for myself. But when I could even swing, I flinched when Ryuichi san yelled at Chihiri to stop.

"Be careful! I didn't give you that just so you can cut your own arm off."

"What? Come on! I was in complete control!"

"I don't care. Now you two stop what you're doing, shut up, and I'll explain how you'll use this thing."

After that my chance of swinging this marvel of a weapon was gone. It was a shame until Chihiri swung her blade the wrong way and accidentally cut the side of her hair. Only a few centimeters closer, her left ear would've been sliced off.

"O, Oops..."

"..."

Ryuichi san silently glared at Chihiri as he was going shoot laser out of his eyes. He stomped towards Chihiri, who was trying to hide the sword behind her back, yanked the weapon away from her hands, and poked both of her eyes with his index and middle finger.

"Gaaawwww!"

"You want to try swinging, Itou?"

"N, No! Absolutely not!"

"Good."

Me and Ryuichi san left our little troublemaker rolling on the ground, and I learned how to use our weapons.

The bottom of the cylinder was like a dial. As Ryuichi san turned it clockwise he tapped the bottom again and the white beam retracted back into the cylinder. He gave me Chihiri's cylinder back, and just like that the demonstration was over.

"That's it?"

"Yup."

"Huh. For something that's technologically advanced, there's not really much to it."

"You know what they say, simple is best."

It was almost unbelievable that this is easy to use as pressing a button. But despite my thoughts it was perfect for us. Easy and effective.

"Be sure to tell Chihiri."

"Sure. Hey Chihiri!"

Chihiri had just finished rolling in pain and was rubbing her eyes. I pulled her off the ground and after giving back the cylinder, I told her how to use it. She easily turned the cylinder on and off again and was about have fun with it again, only to quickly stop when Ryuichi san came along.

"How's the eye, Chihiri?"

Chihiri looked at Ryuichi san's way and responded with both thumbs up, along with her twitching, but still perfectly blinking pink eyes.

"Say Ryuichi san!"

"What, Chihiri?"

"A laser sword is good and all, but can you give us like, a gun too? We can slash AND shoot bastards that stand in our way of Amaterasu!"

"You know, another weapon would be helpful-"

It seemed like a good idea. But then Ryuichi san quickly intervened.

"Before that, let me ask you guys. Have you guys fired a gun before?"

""No?""

"Have you practiced or had proper training?"

""N, No...""

Our answers got quieter and quieter.

"Are you certain you'll not 'shoot yourself' before shooting at anything else?"

""...No...""

Our confidence about guns got shattered by Ryuichi san's cold stern eyes. When he heard us mention about a gun, he probably saw us missing at everything or worse, shooting ourselves by accident.

"Okay, I think that's everything. You two ready to head out?"

"I'm pretty sure none of us are."

"I hate to say this, but I agree with Itou."

"Ain't that the truth... Now get out of here before you guys become a pain in my ass."

Ryuichi san pointed us at the elevator and went back to his computer without looking back. Even though his crude language, we felt Ryuichi san's kindness in his words. We let out a chuckle, and headed straight to the elevator while firmly grasping our new weapons.

When we reached the elevator Kuran was there waiting for us.

"I guess you two are going?~"

"Yeah. So, we'll see you guys- Whoa?!"

All of a sudden Kuran took a step forward and hugged me. I was shocked for more reasons than one, because normally your bones don't make noises when you're getting a hug. There was some massive strength inside those twig like arms. Kuran knew when to stop and she let me go before it really started to hurt.

Kuran soon turned to Chihiri and gleefully hugged her as well.

"Oof! A, Ahhhh..."

Chihiri made the same shocked face as I did at first. But soon she gave a big smile and even wrapped her arms around Kuran. I guess physical pain didn't matter much to Chihiri when a cute girl is hugging her.

After Kuran was done with Chihiri, I couldn't help but ask her about how random this all seemed.

"So uh, Kuran. What's with the hugs?"

"By the way, fyi, best hug in my life."

"Haha, thanks Chihiri san!~ It's just that, I feel bad that I can't help you guys. I don't have helpful gadgets like Ryuichi san, and all the weapons I do have are too heavy for you guys to use. I'd go with you guys if I could. So~ I decided to give you guys some good luck instead~"

"Good luck? That's why you hugged us?"

"Uh huh!~ In Kagero, they say that a dragon's embrace means good luck!~ I heard all of Chain blast's dragon friends hug each other before going out to battle~ I hugged you guys rea~~~ly tight, so I bet you two will be mega lucky!~"

Kuran said with absolute certainty. It sounded more like a simple myth but I didn't care. It was so sweet of Kuran doing this for us. I felt all warm and cozy in my heart, that I was smiling without even noticing it. Kuran's encouragement alone made me actually feel a little more stronger.

"Thanks. We really appreciate it, Kuran!"

"Uooooh! With this there's no way I'll los- Wait, 'dragon's embrace'?... Kuran, are you?!"

Suddenly, Chihiri questionably gazed Kuran from head to toe, with both curiousness and excitement in her eyes. Kuran just kept smiling as she pointed her finger in our direction.

DING

A certain jingle rang and the two of us quickly looked back. It sounded familiar, and wouldn't you know it, it was the sound of the elevator that Ryuichi san had sent down.

"Hehe~ I'll answer that question if you guys return here safely~"

"..Heh. You're on, Kuran!"

"I expect one hell of a story when we get back, all right?"

"You betcha!~"

We both got on the elevator. Kuran cheerfully waved her hand to us even after the doors closed, like a little puppy waving it's tail goodbye. Even Ryuichi san, who seemed busy at the moment, managed the time to turn his chair around to see us leave.

I wanted to yell thank you. Tell them that everything's going to be alright. Except that was when the elevator's restraints activated, as we were sent flying to the surface at top speed.

"Tha-AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

It was a downright miracle that I didn't bite my tongue on the way up.

Click.

The shop doors locked itself the second we stepped out.

Slam!

On top of that a thick steel shutter swiftly rolled down and blocked the already locked entrance, just to be safe.

"A shutter? Doesn't he have to like, put up a literal wall than just 'this'?"

"I'm pretty sure Ryuichi san knows that. He's just avoiding attention. I mean, there's gonna be more than a few questions if someone sees a fortress in their neighborhood."

There's no denying that was exactly what Ryuichi san wanted to do. If Ryuichi didn't have to worry about being found out, he would probably fortify the entire block if he could. Sure it sounds ridiculous but Ryuichi san was crazy enough to build a giant underground base in the middle of Tokyo. The sky's the limit of what that man will do.

RING RING-

Yeah! Yeah! Deep! Deep!

While we were talking, our phones which were resting inside our pocket, started to ring at the same time. I flinched, and not just because of Chihiri's embarrassing ringtone. The chances of both of us being called like this was highly improbable. We could hang up, but who knows what might happen if we do.

"You expecting someone, Chihiri?"

"No. You?"

"Me neither."

We acted as if our phones were explosives. This went on for ten seconds until I thought, maybe we were over reacting. This was from someone who knows us and that we're together at this moment. And like dart to a bulls eye, one likely person came up to mind.

Yeah! Yeah!

"Let's answer it."

Deep! Deep!

"Wha- you sure?"

Yeah! Deep!

"Trust me. And for god sakes, I don't want to hear your damn ringtone for one more second!"

After counting to three, we both took a quick gulp and answered our phones at the same time.

[Jesus, what took you guys so long?]

We couldn't be more happier to hear that familiar, annoyed voice. Me and Chihiri let out a relaxing sigh as if all our tensions were released. It meant more for me to the fact the ringtone from hell was finally over.

"I don't know if you know this Ryuichi san, but it's super suspicious if both our phones ring at the same time."

[Hey, I just needed to talk to both of you. It's not like you guys were scar-]

"Of course not! I mean, we're not saying we were both scared shitless, but..."

"Anyways it's a bit scary especially when you know, aliens are out to get you. God, it's just so hard not to be tense all the time."

[Pfff. First time? Alright Mr and Mrs scaredy cat, I'll be more careful next time.]

Ryuichi san scoffed, and we could hear giggles from his Narukami's units in the background. All the hardships Me and Chihiri went through today, the tension, the anxiety, seemed like nothing to Ryuichi san and the others. And it's not him being rude or anything. He and Kuran have been fighting with units and against them for probably years. So it's only natural when today seemed to be the most strangest, and most dangerous thing ever happening to us, it was just another Thursday to them.

"So, what is it you want to talk to us?"

[Right. You guys already know Amaterasu is at the Shinra department store. The real problem is finding her inside the department store. It's a pain but not too big-]

""Oh.""

A sudden gasp escaped our mouths. The realization struck us with shock, albeit a little too late. Even though he could only hear us across the phone, Ryuichi san quickly caught up of just how stupid we were.

[...Were you guys actually going to search the entire place until you 'happened' to find her?]

"Y, Yeah... We, kind of didn't think this through..."

"It seemed like a good plan. Go and get our runaway princess. Unnntil now..."

I thought just knowing where Amaterasu is was all we needed to know. I didn't consider just how big the department store actually is. I've been there with my parents once, and it easily took hours going through every floor. And it doesn't make things easier with there being thirteen floors to search.

"Hold on, what time is it?"

[It's just past seven thirty, Itou san~ Oh, and Ryuichi san already went and searched online and it say the store closes at eight~]

"...Chihiri, you think we can-"

"Even if we take a cab it's gonna take around twenty minutes to get there. And that's IF there's no traffic in the way."

said Chihiri, shaking her hand sideways.

I couldn't see my face right now, but I'm sure it's the stupid face of a man who had lost all dignity, and just wishes for a bullet in his head.

"...Thanks Kuran."

My own voice have already given up.

[My pleasure~]

The cheerful response from Kuran was like salt to the wound. I wrapped my hand on my aching forehead. I'm surprised I'm able to have a headache at all, seeing how my brain is incapable of thinking straight. I wanted to slap my own head for how dumb I was. And the fact that I had to hear the closing time from Kuran, when I was supposed to know that from the first, just made it more miserable.

"Arrrgghhh! My stupid damn head! God I wanna shoot myself!"

[Hey hey. Don't go suicidal yet. Luckily, I have the solution for this exact problem.]

"Y, You do?"

"But, didn't you guys say you couldn't risk leaving there?"

[Yeah that's still true. Anyway, take a look at your phones. There's going to be a new app that I'd installed.]

"Whoa, since when did you get your hands on our phones?"

[Let's just say Linchu has some swift fingers. Now are you guys gonna let me explain, or are we gonna waste precious seconds?]

Ignoring a couple of privacy issues, me and Chihiri turned on our phones. It didn't take long to find. A blue colored app with a white dragon's claw pointing right. Design aside, it seemed harder to miss, thanks to it being right at the middle of the first screen we see.

Naturally we opened the app. Soon both of our screens turned into an elaborate map of the city, along with a single red dot blinking on Akihabara. Then, without touching it, the map automatically scrolled towards Shibuya. The map widened and stopped at a massive building, obviously being the Shinra department store. When it seemed to be done, the name of the location, the total distance apart from here, the direction and estimated time and even the store's entire layout, all kinds of information appeared at the screen. But most importantly, a blinking blue dot appeared on one of the many building's floors. It was her.

"Amaterasu..."

Amaterasu's movement. They felt so, uneasy. Troubled even. What was going in her mind? What is she feeling with every step? Why isn't she leaving that place? Is she just getting ready to leave? Or is she... waiting for me?

"Where exactly is she?"

"Let's see... It says here that she's on, the rooftop?"

On the shown blueprint, the red dot that's supposed to be Amaterasu was moving. Sometimes back and forth, sometimes still, and sometimes it walked all the way to the building's edge. But no matter how random the movement was, she always stayed within the floor's limit.

"Wow, this thing is amazing! I can't believe this app shows the building structure as well!"

[That app is linked to my computer's database. It's got almost every information of the area in Tokyo. Blueprints, construction date, contract owner, pipeline and electrical, you name it. You need any info about a place in this city, you got it.]

"That is... overwhelming. But uh, Ryuichi san? Don't you have anything, 'easier' to look at? Itou and I, we're not exactly blueprint experts here. I think it's going to take MORE time to read this, than actually finding Amaterasu!"

It was like Chihiri said. The blueprint certainly helps, but the amount of information on a single blueprint was overwhelming. Some parts were simple enough, but others were cryptic that we couldn't tell what we were looking at, and there's every one for every floor.

And it wasn't as easy as simply going up, either. The department store is closing, which meant we can't take the elevator, or the escalators. That meant we had to go through the stairs, and there was a whole maze waiting for us. Not to mention the hundreds of surveillance cameras, along with guards that's patrolling every floor.

[I thought you'd say that. There's an icon with a flag on it. Touch it and see what happens.]

"O, Okay."

A green flag icon was on the upper left corner of the screen. We both pressed it with our thumbs, and then a text saying 'Trail mode' appeared, along with a sky blue line on the map. The line ended at the blue dot, with the red dot, us on the start. It was like any other navigation system that you can find easily on any car or app.

"Uh, thanks, I guess? We won't get lost on the way there at least."

"But I'm not sure this is gonna help us inside the building though."

"Yeah... That's probably true."

[You guys sure about that?]

That is, until we saw some kind of glow beneath us.

"Did I turn the flashlight on by acciden... W, Whoa..."

"What is it Chihir... Wow."

The light certainly came from our phones. The camera lens to be precise. However the light was no simple flashlight. It was a thin yellow laser that shot to the ground, while simultaneously reaching out and drawing an extensive trail ahead of us. I wasn't exaggerating. The distance of the laser was unbelievably far, I could see it extending up to 200 meters ahead, and yet it still kept going.

So not only did this app show detailed information about our destination, it could also literally show us the path we have to take, without having to look at the map.

"Okay, now this is just science fiction!"

[What's wrong, Chihiri san? You sound a little upset.]

"More like jealous! I mean, it clearly needs some product testing before launch, but look at that! A laser automated navigation system! I'd never have to look at a map ever again!"

[Funny story. It was actually an idea from one of my dragon dancers. Vianne, was it? It was from a game she played while she materialized. A little too violent to my taste, but it was helpful.]

"Oh! I know that!"

"Guys, can't you talk about that AFTER we get Amaterasu?"

I couldn't stand it, and interrupted them before the subject went south. Now was certainly not the time for small talk. Both Ryuichi san and Chihiri let out an awkward cough and then apologized.

"Right, sorry Itou."

[I'm sorry too. So, anything else you want to ask me?]

"Let me think... Oh, how do we get past the guards and the cameras? Is there any device we can use to turn it off, or something?"

[I hate to say this, but I can't help you guys on that. I could've if I'd joined you, but... I'm afraid this is the best I could do. From now on, it's all up to you two.]

"O, Oh... I see. Well, wish us luck."

[Uuuu... I wish we could do more to help.]

"Come on! You two have done more than enough! Leave the rest to us!"

Chihiri was right. We had weapons to fight back and a map to guide us. Asking for more than this was just being incompetent. There was absolutely no need for Ryuichi san or Kuran to apologize, when all they've done was helping us.

"Thanks for everything you two, I really am. With all your help, we'll make sure we come back. So please, be careful you two."

Sincerely, I thanked them for everything they've done for us. Even if it doesn't mean much, the least I could do was show my gratitude. For now that is. The most certain way of proving my gratitude was to come back safely with Chihiri, and Amaterasu. And that's exactly what I intend to do.

[Heh, roger that.]

[You betcha!~ Good luck!~]

After a sarcastic chuckle, followed by a bright cheer, our call was over. Now, we were really all by ourselves.

Our surroundings, the people around us, everything seemed more threatening by that sheer fact. And yet, I wasn't afraid.

This was the chance to undo my fault. Getting Amaterasu back outweighed any fear I felt. Call it recklessness, but I wanted to prove that I could do this by myself. I was the one who caused it, so I should be the one to fix it. It was obvious. Which brings me to my problem. Chihiri.

"All right then. Shall we get going?"

"Chihiri, listen. It's not too late to turn back. You don't have to do this."

"Oh come on, this again? I told you on and on, I'm coming with you."

Chihiri rolled her eyes, noticeably annoyed. No matter how many times I beg her to change her mind, she was stubborn as a mule.

Chihiri had no reason to do this. She wasn't a pioneer, just an average girl. She doesn't have to live a life full of danger. She's my best friend. Maybe my only friend. All I want is for her is to be safe, and happy. Why doesn't she understand that?

"Chihiri, this isn't a game! You can die. Like, really die."

"Who says I see this as a game? I know Itou. I understand the consequences."

"No you don't! Chihiri, please-"

"Oh screw you, man! Don't tell me what I can, and can't understand!"

Chihiri furiously pushed me back with both of her hands. If I take another step, she seemed ready to punch me. Her temper snapped, glaring with genuine anger. She was having none of it, as she pointed her finger yelling at me.

"What's your problem? You think I'm weaker than you? Cause you're no different than I am without Amaterasu!"

"I know! That's not what I'm trying to tell you!"

We yelled at each other, not caring the cautious looks of passing pedestrians. I didn't want to be mad at Chihiri, but her stubbornness was starting to irritate me. Our voice grew louder, until one oblivious question from her broke my limit.

"Then what?! What's so important that you want to get rid of me?!"

"BECAUSE I DON'T WANT YOU TO FUCKING DIE!"

I yelled with all my might, throwing up all my pent up frustration. Her eyes widened as if surprised. In one fowl swoop, I yanked Chihiri's phone off her fingers, as I kept on yelling at my best friend.

"How fucking dense are you?! You? Understand? You don't know anything! Do you know how it feels to get your chest stabbed? To get it split open?! It's something I never want to experience ever again! And yet here you are! Trying so desperately to get yourself fucking killed! I'm trying to stop you, my best friend! From ever experiencing that kind of pain! Get that through your thick skull already!"

When I finished I panted and was desperate for a quick breather. After all my shouting, I immediately regretted it. My anger wasn't meant for Chihiri, and yet I took it out at her. I expected she'd talk back and proving me wrong. But Chihiri's lips were shut. Unlike her stubborn attitude, Chihiri actually listened to me without saying a word.

"Chihiri, I..."

"What about me?"

Chihiri grasped her fist and said with drowning sadness in her words.

"You're worried if I get killed? Haven't you thought that maybe I'm worried about you, too?! What if something happens to you, and you're all alone? I'd regret every moment of my life if I didn't do anything to stop it!"

"But... It's too dangerous for you, Chihiri."

"Same goes for you! Without Amaterasu, you're the same as I am! That's why I'm trying to go with you, and why I chose to receive Ryuichi san's weapon. So I can return safely with my best friend! You're worried about me? Then what do you think I'd feel about you?"

I stood there, completely still in shock. A flash of Amaterasu's face overlapped with her words. It made me realize. About me. About Amaterasu.

Sure she and I are bonded as pioneer and unit. But mentally, I couldn't accept her. A part of myself kept telling me. I didn't deserve her. Her pride, her devotion, is wasted for someone like me. How could I accept Amaterasu, when I couldn't accept myself?

I've hurt my parents, and Chihiri so much when I was little. I've changed since then, but I still hate myself for the pain I caused them. So when Amaterasu was so proud about me being her pioneer, I couldn't understand why.

Her compliments made me anxious. Her warm smile filled me with guilt. Someone as perfect as she is was truly happy to be with me, and I kept asking myself why. Her positive words were blocked out like a broken recorder, leaving me drowning in self disgust. And when we lost I blamed myself. Because Amaterasu was perfect, she lost because I was holding her back. But most importantly, it was easier.

When she left, Amaterasu had seen through me. No matter how much she tries, that I'll keep distancing myself from her. And yet, even though I was truly disgusting, she still smiled at me with so much heart.

It was as Chihiri said, I never considered Amaterasu's feelings. When I almost died, The weight of responsibility must've tormented her. Her silence had said it all, and like an idiot, I treated her problems as if it was a joke. It wasn't about my forgiveness. It was about being better, to make sure she protects me, her pioneer. I was too busy blaming and running away, that I never realized how serious Amaterasu thought about me.

Amaterasu had saved my life and Chihiri's. It doesn't matter if I deserve her or not, I owe her my life, and I'll not abandon my savior just because of my insecurity.

"Chihiri."

"H, Huh? What?"

Chihiri gave me an odd look at my sudden change of tone. Her eyes were blinking like a surprised animal, and was waiting what I would say next.

"Here."

I immediately held out Chihiri's phone back to her. She gave a careful look at her phone, and then my face in turn. Scoffing, she quickly took back her phone from my hand. Naturally she was mad at me, folding her arms while giving me a good glare.

"Got anything to say?"

"Sorry."

"Hmph. Good."

Her stern face softened once I apologized. Thankfully it didn't seem to upset her that much. Soon she turned on the app again, as a second laser drew itself a long trail aside my own. After seeing that I sighed and turned around to ask her, one last time.

"Last chance, Chihiri. You really going to come with me? It could be dangerous. You could get hurt, or worse."

Chihiri's eyes unwavered, as she responded in a heartbeat.

"Itou. You're my best friend, and my best bro. No way in hell I'm letting you face any danger alone."

Chihiri made up her mind, and so did I. If there's anything threatening us towards Amaterasu, I'll face it side by side with my best friend.

And if possible, with Amaterasu as well.

"Thanks, Chihiri."

"Don't mention it, man."

[For god sakes, get going already!]

"Whoa! R, Ryuichi san?"

Ryuichi san's frustrated voice came yelling out of our speakers. His sudden voice surprised me so much I almost dropped my phone onto the pavement.

"H, How are you still talking to us?"

[I called you because your sensors haven't moved ever since you guys went topside!]

[We heard you guys talking, and Chihiri san, you were so cool!~ Your burning friendship!~ It sounded like something straight out of a TV show!~]

"A, Ahaha... W, Well, what can I say! Friendship is just one of many virtues of me, the great Chihiri!"

[MOVE YOUR ASS, BEFORE I COME UP THERE, AND SHOOT YOU GUYS MYSELF!]

"O, Okay! We will!"

With a loud bang, Ryuichi san hung up. The image of Ryuichi san's face behind the phone, was too terrifying to think of. His blood curling threat kept ringing in my ear, and it was most likely about to happen if we kept staying here.

"L, Let's get going!"

"No complaints here!"

We quickly ran towards the shown trail as if our lives depended on it. My only hope was nothing dangerous awaits us on our way.
