Before Reading

I want to let peeps know that Lilith and Adam are definitely going to be very complex characters in this story. So, for sure trust me with this story as I hope to present a difficult situation for characters and a angsty journey, hahaha. Just cause some things 'seem' to appear a way doesn't mean it's the actual truth : )

In my story, I'm making it that Lilith and Adam were alone together for some years before things went down. More about the type of relationship they had will be revealed through the story. I don't want to give more details about it due to spoilers

I hope you peeps enjoy the next chapter!

I thank oxblooddraws for beta reading and finding small mistakes in the chapter : )

Years Ago

Adam let out an annoyed sigh as he slowly descended the street of Heaven. He received a summon for a meeting, which rarely happened and left him feeling less than thrilled. He couldn't recall the last time he was called to join a meeting. Frankly, he would have preferred to stay in bed, but Sera insisted that his presence was 'important'.

Hovering over to a nearby building, he paid little attention to the lively scene around him. People sang and danced, radiating joy from their souls, a sight he fought hard not to roll his eyes at, especially considering the ungodly early hour.

For real, how did everyone seem to have so much energy?

Then again, even he had a hard time knowing what time it was since their world was always bright outside.

Unconsciously, Adam frowned, avoiding eye contact with shirtless angels displaying well-defined muscles as he walked past them.

"There you are," Sera greeted the moment he entered the building. "I see you just rolled out of bed and didn't bother to tidy yourself up." She scanned him from head to toe, taking his usual simple white robe - a very blank look compared to the others who dwelled in Heaven. Adam, however, didn't care; he disliked clothing that felt restrictive. He considered walking around naked, just like he used to back in his Earth days, but Sera and the other seraphs would never allow it and truth be told, he also learned to feel it was pretty much not appropriate.

Also, maybe if his body wasn't so different from what it used to be, he would probably feel more comfortable under his own skin to show it off.

He also figured that perhaps Sera was disappointed in him for not shaving or bothering to fix his messy hair.

Whatever…

He was Adam, the first male human, and he shouldn't care what others thought, especially when they made no effort to address it.

At least, that's what he told himself.

"Well, come along," Sera urged, as they walked down the hallway. "Now, Adam, I know your history with her hasn't been amicable, but please be on your best behavior. She has never initiated a meeting in heaven, and she claims to have dire news. Unfortunately, she insisted on meeting only with you. I need you to find out what's so important that she would come all the way up here for."

"Yeah, sure, whatever you say," Adam replied, not exactly paying attention to what she was saying.

They approached the door, and Adam nonchalantly walked through it as Sera shut the door behind him. He looked up, and his eyes widened in shock upon seeing the last person he thought he would see sitting at the end of the table across from him.

"Lilith!?" he exclaimed, his wings raising up in alarm. He immediately tried to fix his messy hair. "What the fuck are you doing here?!"

The first woman ever created sat calmly, legs crossed, observing him as if studying him. Even after thousands of years, she looked the same as before, except for the dark makeup she had on. Overall, though, she was still beautiful as ever. Not a single wrinkle marred her complexion. It was unfair!

"Oh, it is you," Lilith responded in a collected tone, making one of his eyes twitched. "For a moment there, I hardly recognize you. My dear Adam, have you not gotten any sleep recently?"

Adam averted his gaze, feeling self-conscious of his dark circles always present under his eyes. His wings hesitantly clung to his rib area, since he had definitely gained some weight the last time they saw each other.

"You didn't answer my question, you bitch," Adam said with annoyance. "What the fuck are you doing here?"

Lilith eyed him for a long, silent moment. "Didn't Sera tell you about my request to talk to you?"

Adam shifted his gaze up at the ceiling, trying to backtrack the events before he walked into the room. Sera was telling him something, but…

"You haven't changed, have you?" Lilith said, as a small smile appeared on her face.

"You literally just fucking told me you didn't recognize me," Adam grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest.

"You're right, I did." Lilith let out a quiet chuckle, making Adam look at her strangely.

He expected her to throw a snide remark; he was surprised when she sat there, giving him a soft smile instead. He was ready to snap at her till she suddenly got up and made her way around the table towards him.

Adam narrowed his eyes at her with suspicion, body tensing up when she stood before him. Then she raised a hand, which he fought very hard not to recoil from, looking at her with utter confusion as she ran her fingers through his hair.

For a split moment, he thought they were back in the Garden of Eden, lying next to one another, her hand on his head as she played with his hair. The memory caused his chest to feel tight, wishing the years they had together never came to an end.

He looked away from her and glared at the perfectly white stone table beside them.

"There, much better," Lilith said with a satisfied hum, pulling her hand away from him.

He hated the fact that he wanted her to keep running her fingers through his hair…

The room fell silent right after, and Lilith continued to gaze at him, making Adam feel extremely uncomfortable, especially since he didn't know exactly what to say or do.

He expected that if he and Lilith ever saw each other again, she would try to stab him or something, because he figured she blamed him for being cast out to hell, even though he had nothing to do with it. It was her damn fault for thinking she could do whatever she wanted.

Regardless, he thought they would at least get into a heated argument any time soon, like the one they had the last time they saw each other. Because that's the sort of person she was, always wanting to argue with him.

Women…

"It's been so long since we've seen each other, hasn't it?" She asked, making him look at her with weariness.

"What the fuck do you want, Lilith?" he asked, his patience running thin.

Lilith gazed at him before she took a seat, motioning for him to sit as well.

He had the urge to stay on his feet, but he ended up sitting on the chair by her.

Now, he didn't do so because she told him to, but because he loved sitting, okay?

He waited with a frown as her gaze took a serious look. "Some souls from Hell are planning to attack Heaven," she uttered. "And I'm not sure if I'm strong enough to prevent it."

From all the reasons he assumed for her visit to Heaven, the words coming out from her mouth were the last thing he expected. And he couldn't help but just stare at her in shock.

Present

He couldn't see.

He couldn't move.

He couldn't breathe!

Panic slammed into Adam as he felt his body pressed down by an unknown force, suffocating him, keeping him immobile.

For a fleeting moment, he believed he was in some nightmare, and he desperately yelled at himself to wake up. He struggled, his limbs flailing to break free, silently screaming for someone to help him, as the weight persisted to keep him down. His wings shrieked in agony under him.

Panic turned into terror as his efforts seemed to be futile, but a surge of strength rushed through him, and his hand broke free from his restraints. His palm shot out, his fingers clawing at the air while his lungs burned for air.

Suddenly, the weight pressing down on him gradually lifted, growing lighter until it vanished entirely. A small amount of air filled his lungs, causing him to cough out whatever was in his mouth and then wheeze. He tried to sit up, and someone gave him a hand.

Violent coughs, his throat burning with each spasm, accompanied his attempts to breathe, making him realize he was not stuck in a nightmare. Everything, especially the pain and weakness coursing through his body, felt too real.

Tremors ran through his body as confusion and disorientation settled in. He roughly brushed at his eyes, trying to clear his vision.

Then he coughed again, hating each second.

"Easy, Adam. It's okay. You're safe now," he heard a soothing voice say next to him before he felt something warm rub his back, causing him to lean against the touch, desperately seeking comfort. He opened his stinging eyes and looked up with utter confusion to see Charlie kneeling beside him with a concerned expression.

"What… the fuck?" he struggled to let out with his throat still burning, edging away from her touch. His disoriented gaze darted around, struggling to take in his surroundings. He found himself in a cramped hole, surrounded by loose soil. Dirt and smudges of blood stains covered his clothes and limbs.

"Okay, I know you are very confused, but I need you to focus on slowing down your breathing," Charlie said softly and carefully as he didn't realize his breaths were coming out fast. "Can you do that for me, Adam? Focus on your breathing?"

He ignored her words as he slowly raised his hands.

Typically, he wore gloves with embedded claws, but now, his hands were bare, dark grey, and actual claws extended from the tips of his fingers.

His breathing quickened as his hands shook.

"What the fuck?" he gasped, his voice trembling.

"Adam, please, follow my breathing," Charlie placed a hand on his trembling hands, making him violently flinch away. He backed away as fast as he could from her with his shaking limbs. His rapid breaths continued to cause a sharp pain in his lungs. Amid his panic, he accidentally pinned the end of one of his wings with his hand, causing him a grimace.

Then his eyes widened as he stared down at ashen grey feathers, slowly extending his wings to see they were no longer the brilliant gold they once were.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!" he screeched like never before, making the girls in the courtyard wince.

Adam grabbed at his wings, tugging at them, unable to believe that his body had such disgusting things attached to it. "What have you done to me?!" he snapped at Charlie, his heart painfully pounding against his chest. "What the FUCK have you done to me, you FUCKING BITCH?!"

Charlie stared at him with wide eyes before she slowly rose to her feet, hands extended in a pacifying gesture. "I swear, Adam, we did nothing to you," she said softly.

"Holy shit, what the hell is going on here?" Angel asked, ever so curious as he stepped into the courtyard with Husk and Nifty following behind him. The three froze at the spot, Angel and Husk's eyes wide as they took in the uncovered grave and at a small distance, the angel they had seen died a week ago. "Alright… I didn't see this coming," Angel said after gathering his thoughts.

In a heightened state of panic and instinct, Adam tried to unleash a powerful beam at Angel and Husk. To his horror, though, nothing materialized from his extended arms.

Bursting forward was Nifty, eyes blown wild and a small knife in her hand.

"Stab! Stab! Stab!" she yelled with glee. Her hand moved in a frenzied up-and-down motion. Adam felt terror and dread as the tiny demon dashed at him. He shot up from the ground, his wings pushing past the pain and weakness in them.

"Adam, wait!" Charlie yelled out while she lunged at Nifty, tackling her to the side to prevent her from scaring Adam further. She saw Angel retrieving his guns and Husk brandishing his weaponized cards. The two glared menacingly at Adam, who was now looking around frantically near the ceiling.

"Guys, no, don't hurt him!" Charlie pleaded with them, causing Angel and Husk to glance at her with confusion.

Adam's breathing quickened, the painful gasps worsening. Spotting a window high on a wall, he shot towards it without a second thought, ignoring the agony caused by the glass cutting at his wings and barely catching his name being called after him as he flew as far from the hotel as he could.
