Yes, Casey's hometown being Mudville is based on the poem her character is based on, 'Casey at the Bat', Mudville being the fictitious town it takes place in. Her last name Phinney is also based on that poem as the author Ernest Thayer published it under the pseduname Phin, based off of his college nickname Phinney.
"Hello, I'm here for a gym battle." Ash said, entering the gym.
"Ash, he's probably not awake, the gym just opened." Casey groaned.
"Haha! That's what you would think, but nay I rise with my bird Pokemon every morning!" A voice said, falling to the ground.
"Who says Nay?" Molly whispers.
"My name is Ash Ketchum and I would like to challenge you to a battle!" Ash said proudly.
"Very well, my name is Falkner, and I accept your challenge!" Falkner said walking up. "How many badges do you have here in Johto?"
"This will be my first gym battle." Ash said with confidence.
"Very well, this will be a three on three battle then." Falkner said. "You can switch out your Pokemon at any time, while I am restricted to who I have out."
"He knows! He's earned eight badges in Kanto already!" Casey called out.
"Technically I also earned four in the Orange Islands, and WHY DID YOU TELL HIM THAT!" Ash shouted.
"So you've been around the block a few times, then I will use these three. Come on out Murkrow!"
'Murkrow, the Darkness Pokemon, a Dark and Flying type. It is said that when chased, it lures its attacker onto dark mountain trails where the foe will get lost.' Molly's Pokedex explained.
"A dark type?" Ash asked in confusion.
"They're commonly weak to bug and fighting types and defensive against Psychic types." Molly explained.
"Well, since I don't have any of those, come on out Gligar!" Ash called out.
"He went with Gligar." Molly groaned.
"Ash, it's a flying type, wouldn't Pikachu have made more sense!" Casey shouted.
"Sometimes you need to think outside the box. Now Gligar use Poison Sting!"
"Murkrow use Peck!"
Gligar launched onto Murkrow, lunging his stinger into the flying type as Murkrow flailed about.
"Murkrow use Pursuit!"
Murkrow launched an attack, firing Gligar off of them.
"Gligar use Double Team!"
Gligar's form became blurry as two more appeared, making a total of three.
"Murkrow use Haze!"
"Gligar use Poison Sting!"
Each Murkrow leapt through the haze, latching onto Murkrow, surrounding the dark type and dealing decent damage.
"Murkrow use Peck!"
"Gligar use Poison Sting!"
Murkrow pecked at one of the three, dissipating the image, as the other two Gligar attacked.
"Murkrow is unable. Huff huff. To battle, the winner is, wheeze Gligar." The gym judge said, having had to run into the arena as soon as he saw a battle already taking place. "Who has a battle this early?"
"Murkrow return." Falkner called out. "Come on out Noctowl!"
'Noctowl, the Owl Pokemon, a Normal and Flying type. Its extremely soft feathers make no sound in flight. It silently sneaks up on prey without being detected.' Casey's Pokedex explained.
"Gligar use Poison Sting!"
"Noctowl use Confusion!"
Noctowl tilted it's head before sending Gligar launching back, having hit the right one.
"Your diversion tricks won't work on Noctowl, they are able to see through any illusion." Falkner said proudly.
"Gligar only has diversion tricks though." Molly said out loud.
"Gligar return! Pikachu you're up!" Ash said.
"Pi!"
"Noctowl use Hypnosis!"
"Pikachu use Thunderbolt!"
Noctowl looked directly at Pikachu, putting the electric type to sleep before getting struck by the Thunderbolt.
"Hah!" Ash exclaimed.
"Noctowl use Dream Eater!" Falkner called out.
Noctowl swooped down, before flying right over Pikachu, healing itself while dealing damage to Pikachu, causing him to wake up.
"Pikachu use Thunder!"
A massive bolt of electricity shot out from Pikachu, engulfing Noctowl, causing massive damage before the flying type fell to the ground in a swirling motion.
"Noctowl is unable to battle, the winner is Pikachu." The gym judge declared.
"Great work Noctowl, you did your best." Falkner said. "Come on out Skarmory!"
'Skarmory, the Armor Bird Pokemon, a Steel and Flying type. It's sturdy wings look heavy, but they are actually hollow and light, allowing it to fly freely in the sky.' Ash's Pokedex explained.
"Steel type?" Ash asked.
"It's weak to fighting, ground, and fire!" Molly called out.
"Fire, I can do that." Ash said. "Pikachu, take a break! Charizard I choose you!"
Charizard flew into the air with a mighty roar and stream of flames shooting into the air.
"Charizard use Flamethrower!"
"Skarmory use Steel Wing!"
Skarmory rushed forward, pushing through the flames, managing to knock Charizard backwards in the air.
"Charizard use Seismic Toss!"
"Skarmory use Drill Peck!"
Charizard recovered from the attack before launching forward, grabbing both of Skarmory's wings from behind, keeping the steel type's beak from hitting him as he flew higher and higher into the air above the battlefield before spinning high up there.
"Skarmory break free!" Falkner called out.
"Charizard you heard him!" Ash called out.
Charizard rocketed down towards the ground, slamming Skarmory into the arena's floor in the process.
"Skarmory use Toxic!"
"Charizard use Dragon Rage!"
Skarmory launched a poisonous blob from it's wings as a ball of blue flames ignited it instantaneously, disintegrating it.
"Skarmory use Drill Peck!"
"Charizard use Flamethrower!"
Skarmory got back into the air in a spiral motion drilling right towards Charizard as the fire type unleashed a powerful stream of flames engulfing Skarmory to the point it was no longer able to be seen.
"Skarmory is unable to battle, the victor of the battle is Ash and Charizard." The gym judge declared.
"Great work Charizard!" Ash cheered, hugging the fire type as Pikachu joined the embrace.
"Here you are Ash, as proof of your victory here at the Violet City Gym, I present you with this the Zephyr Badge." Falkner said, holding out a badge.
"Alright, I just got a Zephyr Badge!" Ash exclaimed excitedly.
"So what's next, we head south to Azalea?" Casey questioned.
"Actually, can we make a stop, my dad is about to go on a dig nearby." Molly admitted.
"It'd be great to meet back up with Doctor Hale, of course we can." Ash said. "I wonder what he's looking into."
