Chapter 11: Power Surge
The Professor awoke in alarm, sensing something was wrong in the late hours of the night, everyone usually asleep right now. He moves to his wheelchair and exits his room, the mansion creaking as he went down the hall, noticing some of the students were up and wondering what was going on. "Back to bed everyone." The Professor says as he passes by them.
He stops in front of Jean's door, knowing this was the source of disruption. He enters cautiously, seeing the red headed teen stirring in her sleep, her powers acting up. "Jean," He says, trying to wake her. "Jean, you must wake up."
He tries to use his powers, sensing chaos in her mind and gritting his teeth as he calls out to her. Jean gasps awake, the Professor huffing a bit. "Are you alright, Jean?" He asks, concerned.
"I.. I think so. I think it was just a dream, Professor." Jean puts a hand to her head.
"If your powers are getting out of hand, perhaps we should try to work on it."
"It's getting stronger…" She says softly, looking down at her hands. "I don't know if I am strong enough, Professor."
"I know you are Jean. Perhaps we should work on this together tomorrow after school?"
Jean nods, then the Professor leaves to head back to his room, a sigh escaping from her as she lays back down and stares up at the ceiling. It felt too soon when her alarm clock went off as it was time to get up and get ready for school, having only slept for three more hours, but she was fine. Jean puts on a red, long sleeved tank and a pair of flared blue jeans along with a pair of ankle boots. She brushes her hair, then heads downstairs for breakfast where she runs into Scott. "Morning Jean." He greets her.
"Morning, Scott." She smiles like everything was normal, but she didn't need to read his mind to know what he was going to ask.
"Everything okay? The mansion was creaking last night." Scott looks up after pouring some orange juice.
Jean gives a fake smile, holding her mug to pour herself coffee. "Oh, that. I just had a bad dream is all. Nothing to worry about, Scott."
Scott frowns, grabbing a bagel. "Jean, you can always tell me…"
The others enter the kitchen before Scott could even finish what he wanted to say, Jean frowning and turning from him as she poured herself a cup of coffee, then she grabs a cranberry muffin and starts to eat her breakfast at the table. Kitty groans as sits down with her eggs, biscuit and milk, Rogue raising a brow at her as she sat with an apple. "What's wrong?" She asks.
"I got a math test today and I, like, so do not feel ready for it." Kitty groans as she forks her food.
"Ah'm soah ya'll do fahne," Rogue gives her a small smile, then she herself groans. "Aw man, ah fahgot ta get mahself coffee."
A cup of coffee lands next to her apple, Rogue looking up to see Remy sitting down next to her. "Y' left it over dere." He lied and Rogue knew it, but she accepted it anyway, noticing he made it how she liked it.
"Thanks." She mumbles as she sips it.
"Jus' an apple?" Remy asks with a brow raised at her choice of breakfast.
Rogue shrugs as she sips her coffee again, not wanting to admit she ate small meals. Remy narrows his eyes, then hands her his muffin from his plate. Kitty watched the two curiously as she munched on her biscuit, her eyes going back and forth between the two. Piotr sits next to her, looking at her curiously. Rogue looks at Remy with wide eyes. "No it's fahne! Ya can have it, Remy."
Remy shakes his head after chewing some eggs. "Non. Y' take it. Can' jus' 'ave an apple an' coffee fo' breakfast."
Rogue purses her lips into a small pout, taking a bite out of the muffin. Remy smiles, proud of himself as he ate, Rogue narrowing her eyes a bit as she ate. Kitty noticed Piotr sitting next to her and leans over a bit, smiling. "They are, like, totally meant for each other." She whispers.
Piotr nods silently as he ate his breakfast. Scott sat across from Jean as he ate, still concerned for her. She glances up to him, giving him a knowing look as she sips from her mug. Scott looks away, but she could tell what was on his mind. Once everyone has finished breakfast and packed into the cars, they were off to school like normal, Jean driving her car with some of the X-teens, her speech on her mind for the assembly later today. She parks her car, everyone getting out and chatting amongst themselves. Scott parks his car, his eyes on Jean as he gets out. Warren raises a brow. "What's wrong?" He asks.
"I think something's up with Jean." Scott answers as he tugs his backpack over his shoulder.
"I'm sure she'll be okay." Warren reassures him with a pat as they walk towards the school.
The first half of the morning went fine, everyone going to classes like normal, then it was time for the assembly after lunch, students piling into the auditorium. Principal Darkholme said a few things, then announces the schools soccer team winning state champions, the auditorium cheering loudly as the team goes to the stage. Team captain Jean accepting the award, smiling as she stood at the podium. "Thank you Principal Darkholme." Jean smiles, looking at the trophy, then to the crowd. "I would like to thank the team…"
She drifts off as she hears a million voices in her head of her classmates. Her eyes scan around, catching her housemates watching her. "Course she's the captain of the team. Gotta ride that popular train even mo'. Wait… why is she lookin' at meh?" Rogue's thoughts rang in her head.
"I hope she doesn't choke up on stage." Kurt winces in his thoughts.
"Oh man, glad that's not me up there." Kitty bites her lip.
"Uhm… I…" Jean stutters.
"Come on Jean, you can do it." She hears Scott's thoughts as he stared at her.
Jean takes a deep breath, her eyes on Scott as she relaxes herself. "As I was saying, lost my train of thought for a moment," people chuckling. "I would like to thank the coach and my teammates, we couldn't do this without the help from all of them. Thank you."
The assembly ends, Scott feeling relieved Jean was able to get some control over her powers, knowing she was struggling with them. It was time for gym class, several of Xavier's students sharing the same class. Rogue and Kitty get ready, noticing Jean was lingering as she got changed. "C'mon, she'll be out in a moment." Rogue says softly, placing her gloved hand on Kitty's shoulder.
Kitty nods, leaving the locker room with the two toned southerner. Jean takes a deep breath, her eyes gazing into her locker, then she shuts it and exits the locker room to the field. Scott was at the track circle, stretching, when he noticed Jean emerge onto the field. Remy had finished stretching on the field next to Scott, noticing the look on the leaders face. "Got somet'in' on y' mind?" Remy asks, an eyebrow arched up.
"I'm worried about Jean." Scott sighs, getting up from the ground. "She's been acting… off today. I think it has something to do with her powers…"
"Didn' t'ink she had trouble controllin' 'er powahs." Remy blinks.
His contacted eyes caught Rogue and Kitty across the field, stretching in the grass and talking. He couldn't make out what they were talking about, but then his eyes caught Piotr coming over to them, greeting the girls. Kitty beamed up at the large Russian while Rogue gives a small wave. Remy tears his gaze away when he hears a a snarky comment from behind him and Scott. "Looks like I'm stuck with you losers today." Duncan appears, making Scott glare at the football player.
Remy smirks a bit. "'M pretty soah y' de only loser heah."
"Hey, watch it Lebeau, or I'll pummel you." Duncan sneers.
"Dat a challenge?" Remy's red eyes flashed a bit under his brown contacts, but only Scott noticed.
"Remy, no." Scott says firmly.
"Why not? If he pushes us 'round, den we should push back."
Duncan makes a face, grabbing Remy by his shirt, even though the southern teen was just slightly taller than the blonde football player. "How about you shut your mouth." Duncan threatens. "And I won't punch you here on the field."
"Duncan, that's enough." Scott growls.
"Tch. You're not Jean. Keep your trap shut Summers."
While Duncan had his head facing Scott, Remy had the advantage and flipped the boy over onto his back. "Le's go t' de startin' line, Scott." Remy says as he adjusts his shirt while walking away from a stunned Duncan.
Scott follows quickly, catching some other students looking over. Jean gives a small wave to Scott, Scott smiling and waving back. Rogue, Kitty and Piotr were looking over with surprised looks on their faces, but Rogue's turned into a smirk as she felt Duncan got what he deserved. The gym teacher blows their whistle, pointing to Remy. "Remy, you're sitting out on this one."
"Fo' what?" Remy asks.
"For fighting with another student, now get." The gym teacher motions to the bleachers behind Kitty, Rogue and Piotr.
Remy shrugs, then saunters over to the bleachers and sits down, waving to Rogue with a smug grin. Rogue giggles a bit, then her and Kitty get ready for what they had to do, Piotr walking over to the bleachers. "Why you beat him up?" Piotr asks.
Remy rolls his eyes. "I didn' beat 'im up. He was tryin' t' beat m' up so t' get 'is hands off o' m' I flipped 'im ovah. Cyclops may put up wit' de bullies, but I don'."
"Hm, I see. Dat was good." Piotr nods.
Remy smirks, then Piotr walks over to his station that had poles leaning together in a stand. Scott and Duncan were racing against each other, both boys pushing each other. Duncan trips Scott, causing the boy to tumble and lose his glasses and cover his eyes. The gym teacher blows the whistle, a scowl on his face. "Matthews, Principals office, now!" He yells.
Duncan looks over, eyes wide. "What?!"
"Now!" The gym teacher yells.
Duncan saunters off the field, Remy smugly watching him leave, the gym teacher helping Scott find his glasses and give them back. Jean saw what happened, then she clutches her head and grunts, squeezing her eyes shut. Remy and Scott noticed from their spots, noticing Jean fall to her knees and her powers start to pick up some of the gym equipment. "Oh no…" Scott whispers.
Piotr noticed some cannonballs flying towards Kitty and a couple other girls, turning his gut metal as he steps in front to catch it, causing the girls to jump and stop what they were about to do. Remy jumps over the railing, Rogue about to turn to grab a dumbbell, but noticed a pole with a sharp end come towards her. Remy tackles her to the ground in time, both southerners shutting their eyes as the pole jams itself into the brick wall of the school. "What the hell!?" Rogue gapes, eyes wide.
"T'inkin' Jean's powahs are outta control." Remy says as he looks up.
Scott rushes towards Jean, grabbing her with concerned eyes behind his glasses. "Jean! What's wrong?!" He asks.
"I can't control it, Scott! I just.. can't!" Jean cries, clutching her head still, then she passes out in his arms.
The X-teens excuse themselves from school early, rushing to get their friend home, Scott driving at a fast speed, while Piotr held Jean in the front as Kitty, Rogue and Remy sat in the back, still in their gym clothes. Scott parks his car with a screeching halt, Kitty phasing out and rushing to the front door. "PROFESSOR!!" Kitty screams out.
Scott had Piotr hand Jean over to him, quickly entering the mansion with the others trailing behind just as fast. "What's wrong half pint?" Logan asks, rushing in.
"It's Jean, her powers are out of control!" Rogue explains.
"Get her down to the medbay." The Professor commands.
The group rushes down to the lower levels, Scott placing Jean down on the medical bed, her powers activating again as some of the tools started to lift up telekinetically. Piotr dawns his metal form, Rogue and Remy hiding behind the large metal teen as the objects went flying, Kitty phasing through them and Scott blasting some. "Everyone out," Logan ushers. "She's unstable."
"She's too dangerous for me to look at." Hank says as he dodges a tray.
The group exit the room, the Professor using his mind to help ease her mind for a short period until they could come up with a better plan. "Vat is going on?" Kurt asks as the others had come home.
"Jean's powers are unstable." Scott answers, frowning.
"We're all going to try and help her before she's totally out of control. Rogue, I need you to absorb her so that I could get into her mind easier. I cannot get into it if she has her guard up." The Professor plans out, eyeing all his students.
"Suite up everyone." Logan grumbles as he goes to get his suite on.
Once everyone had their suites on, they enter the medbay only to be met with chaos, the room torn open and objects flying everywhere as Jean's body floated in the middle. "You know the drill! Kurt, teleport Rogue as close as you can to Jean. Rest of you, get this debris outta here for a clear shot for the Professor so he isn't hit." Logan commands.
Storm tries to control the wind speed that Jean had created, struggling as Jean's powers were more enhanced than usual. Kurt puts a hand on Rogue's shoulder, teleporting her and himself up to where Jean was floating, but debris knocks them, Rogue letting out a surprised scream as she held onto a piece of the ceiling while Kurt was being spun around. Scott blasts some debris, Kitty phases through debris that flew towards her, while Evan used his spikes to pin them to the wall. Remy charges up some cards, throwing them at some objects so Rogue didn't get hurt as she slowly made her way to Jean.
Piotr smashed some of the debris, while Bobby froze them and Warren used his wings to push them out of the path. Rogue grunts as she struggled, grabbing a wire that was sticking out and reaching over with an ungloved hand, merely inches from Jean's face. She grits her teeth as she tried to reach, hearing the wire snapping under her weight and the weight of the wind. Her fingertips press to Jean's forehead, shutting her eyes as her powers absorbed her, the wire snapping and flinging her into a circle before it tossed her out and towards the ground. Remy catches her, falling backwards with her in his arms. "Jean!" Scott calls out as he rushes to catch her form as the debris stopped and fell.
Rogue clutched her head, breathing in and out as she tries to drown out the voices. The Professor wheels himself towards Jean, using his powers to reach into her mind. "Jean?" Scott worriedly calls out.
Jean's brows furrow, the Professor taking a step back with a small smile. "Scott….?" Jean mumbles as she slowly wakes up.
"She's going to he alright, Scott." The Professor smiles.
Scott sighs in relief but everyone jolted when they hear a scream. Rogue was clutching her head as she knelt on the ground, eyes shut. "Stripes!?" Logan calls out alarmed.
"She okay?!" Remy's eyes widened.
The Professor goes up to Rogue, Jean frowning as she held Scott's hand. "Get them outta mah head!" Rogue cries out.
"Rogue, I need you to calm down." The Professor says calmly. "I know all the voices are a bit much, but you need to drown them out. Listen to my voice."
Rogue bites her lip as she squeezed her eyes, hearing everyone's voice in her head all around her. The Professor used his powers to help her, Rogue finally falling backwards, back into Remy's arms who quickly caught her. She rubs her head, opening her eyes. "Ugh… mah head…" She mumbles.
Everyone sighs in relief, exiting the crumbled medical room, Hank mumbling it'll get fixed later. Jean sits out in the garden, enjoying the nice breeze that blew through, her eyes closed in contentment. "I smell roses." She comments, knowing Scott was coming up to her.
"They came with a card from Duncan saying to get better." Scott comments, handing them to her.
Jean smiles at the flowers, then looks up to Scott. "I saw Duncan was giving you and Remy a bit of a hard time."
"Nothing we couldn't handle." Scott shrugs, hands in his pockets. He got quiet, then he opens his mouth again. "Why do you bother hanging out with him anyway?"
Jean looks up at him, surprised he had asked that question. "I… I honestly don't know…."
"You and I both know he isn't really a true friend."
"Like you are?"
"Well-I mean… yeah." Scott sighs. "Me, Bobby and Warren, we've been your true friends since you came here. Maybe you should reconsider your friendship with Duncan…"
"I'll… think about it Scott. I really do appreciate you." Jean says hesitantly.
Scott nods, then turns to leave, leaving Jean alone with her thoughts, which wasn't always a good thing for her, but she felt better so her mind felt clearer.
Meanwhile, Rogue was in the library, turning her back to the window to go back to her book. She rubs her temple as she looks down at her book, still trying to figure out how to block out the voices as Jean's powers lingered. She could hear Scott and Jean's true thoughts as they spoke, both not admitting to the other just how much they meant to each other. What she didn't hear were the footsteps coming up behind her. "Dat book got y' stumped o' 's it still Jean's powahs dat's botherin' y'?" Remy's voice asks as he sits in front of her.
She didn't even hear his thoughts, which she found weird. Her eyes look up to him while her hand still rubbed her temple. "Jean's powahs," She answers. "An' how come ah can't hear ya thoughts, Cajun?"
Remy leans back in his chair, his red on black eyes on hers. "Cause I blocked out othah telepaths except fo' de Professah from m' mind. Don' need dem constantly knowin' what I was thinkin'."
Rogue looks at him curiously. "How?"
Remy gives her a smile, one that didn't hold any mishief. "Can' tell y', t'iefs secret."
Rogue rolls her eyes, reclining in her chair a bit. "Fahne."
"Buuut, I could tell y' how t' ignore dose voices in y' head." Remy offers, leaning forward.
Rogue eyes him suspiciously, her arms crossed over her chest. "An' how does it work exactly?"
Remy grins, getting up to stand next to her now. "Close y' eyes."
Rogue makes a face at him, pursed lips, wondering if he was playing a trick on her. Remy rolls his eyes a bit. "Jus' close y' eyes."
Rogue sighs, then she shuts her eyes. "Now jus' t'ink o' a glass barrier, o' any type o' barrier-one where de sound can't escape out o' an' int' de open."
Rogue thinks of a small barrier to keep the temporary voices back, pushing them back into a corner of her mind so she couldn't hear them. She opens her eyes slowly, the voices around the campus in her head gone, making her eyes widen in shock. Remy gives her a genuine smile, one hand leaning on the desk. "Whoa…" Rogue's voice was soft, her eyes snapping up to meet his. "It worked!"
A wide, genuine smile was on her lips, Remy giving her a warm smile. "See? Tol' y'."
Rogue smiles warmly up at him, both of them staring at each other for a long moment, until Rogue turns away with a light dusting of pink on her cheek. "A-ah hafta go do homework!" She stands up quickly. "Thanks again, Remy."
She bolts out of the room, Remy's shoulders drooping a bit as she quickly leaves. Rogue shuts her door behind her, feeling her pounding heart as she leans her back against the wood. She closes her eyes, taking a few deep breaths before she made her way to her desk to do her homework.
The Professor opens his eyes as he sat in front of Jean in his office, Jean looking at him with a slight worried expression. "Well?" She asks, patiently waiting to know what he found.
"Well, it seems to have went back into a state of dormancy for now," The Professor explains. "But I fear it will continue to grow as you get older. Your powers, Jean, are quite powerful, but it is a matter of what you choose to do with them as you grow into adulthood. You could use it for good or use it for evil purposes. Your powers are something one should not meddle with, but with control they can be contained. I suggest we do some practices to ensure this power doesn't break free from its cage."
Jean looks down, nodding. "I agree, Professor. The last thing I would want to happen is to hurt my teammates. I can feel it inside of me, trying to spread itself out or claw it's way free, but I know with your help, we can gain control over it."
The Professor smiles. "You can do this, Jean. You're very strong. Perhaps that is one of the many reasons Scott likes about you."
"O-oh, well…" Jean stutters. "Scott's a great..friend. I'm sure he would say that about any of the others. I should go do some of my homework. Thank you again, Professor."
"It is no problem, Jean. You can always come to me for help with your powers. I am one of the strongest telepaths in the world, I could lend you my expertise shall you need them." The Professor dismisses with a smile.
Jean smiles, then gets up and leaves, heading towards her room. She spots Scott talking with Warren and Bobby, daring not to spy on his mind at the moment. But she couldn't help but feel some sort of pull towards him. Still, she carried on towards her room in the opposite direction, leaving her own mind to linger on what he said earlier.
A/N: So any guesses on what could be trying to claw it's way out of Jean?? Next Chapter is Fun and Games! Till next time!
