Chapter 3
Richard cleared his throat, "I was with Dr. Sloan right before he slipped into a coma. Aside from our discussion of his medical directives, his last words were about you, Torres."
Everyone was quiet at this. Their experience as doctors had taught them to pay attention to someone's final words, as they usually convey their most important thoughts, feelings or epiphanies.
"Dr. Sloan was clearly in distress, but he insisted not to inform you and Derek because you were about to operate on his hand. He said that nobody's got better hands than Derek, except for you; that your hands are beautiful, and Sofia inherited them."
Arizona looked at Callie. Mark was right, Callie has beautiful hands. Have I ever told her that? Have I ever noticed that Sofia got Callie's hands?
"He said – and I am hoping I remember the exact words – 'Callie doesn't even know how good she is. Sometimes you wish people would just see themselves the way you do.'"
He paused for a bit, looking at Callie intently. "When you were in the car accident, I told him that I did not understand what you two had or how you had it. But in his final moments, I realized that I might not understand what was between you two, but the love from Dr. Sloan was palpable. Whatever form of love that was, it was deeply felt and enduring."
Nobody spoke for a while until Miranda asked, "Did Sloan mention Lexie at all?"
"No, at least not to me," Richard replied.
Callie couldn't find any words to say. She was quite flattered at the words that apparently came from Mark. I am still not convinced that any of those meant that Mark was in love with me, but I must admit that being his last thoughts may point in that direction.
In love with me – 1
NOT in love with me – 1
