May childishly kicked her feet beneath her table, barely paying attention to the ongoing class. It had been obvious that the weather was drastically changing; it had become colder, and it rained more often. Right the second rain was hitting against the window May was sitting next to, causing for her to lose concentration.
'Ahem. Miss Maple?'
In a shock May turned her head around, her eyes met with that of her teacher. The man looked into her eyes with slight annoyance in his orbs. 'You weren't paying attention, were you?' He asked, slightly hanging over May's table. Intimidated, May clenched her fists. 'Uhm.. no sir, I was losing concentration. I'm sorry. It won't happen again..'
The teacher paused before giving a half-hearted nod. 'Good. Next time make sure that you're not distracted. Understood, miss?' May felt anxiety bubble up in her stomach as she nodded. 'Got it. Sorry again, sir.' The teacher looked at her before turning around, walking back to the whiteboard in front of the class.
In a hurry, May looked at the other side of the class, making sure no one looked at her. But as expected, the infamous Drew Hayden was. And he was not just looking, no, he had this victory like smirk on his face as if he had won something. Furious, May clenched her teeth, which went noticed by him.
He snickered, winking at her playfully before sticking his tongue out and turning back to the teacher. Irritated, May angrily turned around and continued listening to the teacher's instructions. The voice of the teacher barely rung through her ears as she couldn't help but think of him.
'I hope that sounds clear for everybody,' The teacher called out, his eyebrows furrowing. 'Then on to the next subject. Around this time of year you guys will be assigned to a partner project. In this partner project you'll be helping each other improve your struggles by working together and sharing knowlegde.'
The teacher paused before continuing. 'Does that sound understandable? Any more questions?' There came no answer, nor gestures, so the teacher nodded. 'Good. Then I'll be naming the duo's that I randomly generated this morning,' The teacher announced, quickly glaring at his computer screen before he began naming the partners.
Names rung through her ears that she had never heard before. Disinterested, she placed her chin in the palm of her hand and continued to lazily listen to the duo's that were named. Then, the two very names the refused to hear after each other could be heard. 'May maple and Drew Hayden,' The teacher said. 'And lastly Joshua and Erica. Is that clear?'
May once again felt anxiety rise in her stomach as her gaze shift towards Drew, who looked just as surprised. But it looked like he recovered quickly, because once again a grin was on his face. He looked her into the eyes with narrowed eyes, as if telling her 'Man, this'll be fun'.
May's lips quivered before the spun back to the teacher. 'You'll be having time to finish this project until the fall break, so that means within a couple of weeks. If there are any more questions feel free to let me know,' the teacher quipped, turning back to the whiteboard.
Most students had left class already to head to the cafeteria. May was about to slide her books into her backpack calmly, when suddenly, Drew had slammed his hands on the table, grabbing May's attention. 'Alright princess, what's the plan?' He asked haughtily, a smirk plastered on his face.
Blushing, May blinked before replying. The blush faded off her cheeks as she cocked her eyebrow in a questioning matter. 'Who're you calling princess?' May snickered, shoving her books into her backpack with a half-hearted grin. Drew slightly narrowed his eyes. 'I know you know.' He answered. 'So what's the plan?'
'What the plan is?' May chirped. 'I don't know, we stay at one and another's place to work on the project?' May suggested, impatiently tapping the tip of her shoe against the ground. 'Sure. Your place?' Drew offered, his eyelids sinking. 'Huh? My place? No, I don't think that'll work.'
Drew tilted his head confusedly. 'Heh? Why not?' He grunted, towering above May with furrowed eyebrows. 'Because my parents are still working on renovation. If we were to study at my place we'd be in the way,' she croaked, lifting herself up from her chair. 'Renovation? Oh, so you joined this school because you moved?'
'Yup.' May huffed. 'My old home was... much better.. I miss that place.' She said, her good mood disappearing by each word she said. Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder. 'I'm sure you'll get used to it,' Drew said, suddenly appearing much friendlier. 'I think that once your house is all done and renovated you'll feel home there.'
May looked up at Drew in surprise. 'And you've got Brianna to get you through it, right?' He added, his eyes soft and happy. May smiled at him. 'I guess.. I guess you're right.' May agreed, swinging her backpack over her shoulder. 'Good. So we study at my place, then?' May smiled brightly and nodded. 'Sounds good!'
'How long do we have left to walk? I'm exhausted!' May groaned, lazily dragging herself along the streets. Drew rolled his eyes in annoyance. 'We're almost there. Hang in there, damsel in distress,' he commented, flicking his green hair out of his face. 'Do you always have to walk this long?' She groaned again.
'Yeah. Except I don't complain about it like you do,' he snickered. 'I don't complain! I'm just saying that my feet hurt,' May retorted angrily, her head hanging low. 'Well, then you're lucky, because we're here.' Drew said, pointing at the neat building in front of them. 'You live there?' May mumbled, surprised.
'Mhm,' Drew replied dryly, grabbing May by her arm and tugging her along. 'But it's... so large! And so well taken care of!' May gasped, pointing her finger accusingly at the building. 'Duh, what did you think? Everyone in school has a habit of calling me rich,' he groaned, opening the door with his free hand.
'Rich? Oooh, right! Everyone loves you because you're rich,' May snickered. 'Right.' Drew chimed in, deadpanning. May happily ran into the building, immediately looking around. 'So pretty! Do your parents not live here?' May asked, glaring back over her shoulder. 'Not really. They go on these long trips and don't let me know when they'll be back,' Drew sighed.
'They don't let you know? Talk about bad parenting,' May drawled back at him, turning around. 'Don't you feel alone without them?' She asked curiously. 'No, not really.' Drew retorted quickly. 'They've never been around much so I'm pretty used to that. Plus if they were here they'd only be busy with themselves.'
May's facial expression saddened. 'Then they're not good parents. As parental figures they should keep you safe, teach you what's right and wrong, and not leave you here to figure everything out for yourself, Drew.' May said to him, as Drew looked slightly surprised. 'Yeah.. except I've learnt to deal with it now.'
'You know what, Drew?' May said abruptly, excitement ringing through her voice. 'Hm? What?' Drew replied, tilting his head. 'Next time we can visit my house. I'm sure the renovating will be done by then!' May giggled. 'Okay. If you say so,' Drew huffed, sitting down on one of his couches.
'Anyway. Where will we be working?' May asked. 'I don't know. Up in my room maybe?' Drew suggested, as May simply nodded in surprise. 'Sounds good! You show me the way, this place is pretty big I won't be able to find it myself.' May snickered, pulling Drew off of the couch and giving him a light push. 'Sure. Calm down, June.'
The two had sat down on Drew's table in his room. Drew's room was neatly decorated, she was almost jealous. Sliding her books on the table she turned towards Drew. 'So, what are you bad at?' May commented.
'Excuse me?' Drew scoffed, cocking his eyebrow. 'What's a subject you're bad at,' May repeated, deadpanning. 'We've got to strengthen our weaknesses.' May added, as Drew facepalmed. 'No shit sherlock! Except you're implying that I've got a subject I'm bad at.' He jested, shaking his shoulders into a indifferent shrug.
'You don't?' May questioned, not believing what he was saying. 'Nahh. Schoolwork is easy peasy,' He huffed proudly, hanging back into his chair with a smirk on his face. 'Hm. Okay. So what's the square of 72, then?' May challenged. Drew hesitated, awkwardness crippling in his facial expression. 'I... that would be...' He mumbled.
'5184,' May cut him off. 'It's 5184. You know calculating the squares of many different numbers are going to be on the next test, right?' She grinned, getting Drew to let out a groan. 'Why do you have to bring up the subject I'm least good at?' He hissed angrily. 'Because, this subject is gonna be on the test. Let me at least help you.' May huffed.
Drew sighed, pulling himself back up with a groan. 'Sure. Whatever.' May looked a lot more cheerful. 'All right! So here's how it works, Drew.' May began. 'The square of a number is itself multiplied by itself... so if you had the square of three, it'd be nine. because three times three is nine!' May giggled. 'Okay, get into the hard stuff.' Drew croaked.
May nodded. 'Okay! So to calculate the long side of a triangle you have to apply the pythagorean theorem!' May explained, opening her book. 'Cool, what has that to do with the square of a number?' The green haired male croaked in reply. 'Because you need the length of the sides in square to calculate that,' May answered. 'I don't get it.' Drew replied dryly, his eyelids sinking. 'I'll explain it again.'
'Okay, so this side is the long side.' May said again, pointing at the triangle she'd drawn. She got no response, so she looked next to her. It looked like Drew wasn't paying attention. 'Drew, do you want to get a decent grade for your math test or not? This is only the bare minimum.' May murmured, deadpanning.
Drew turned his head around. '...Oh. Yeah, sure. Go ahead and tell me how it works again?' He suggested, placing his hand under his chin. May nodded, turning back towards her journal and continued writing. 'Because this triangle has a right angle, you can use the pythagorean theorem! So that would be the long side which is the one you don't know the length of.'
May continued on talking. She enjoyed explaining all that she was good at and what she had understood, running ahead from her rival is what made her even more psyched. 'It might be difficult, but if you keep on practicing it'll work out just fine!' May smiled — except her smile faded when, once again, she got no response. Turning around to face Drew, she expected him to be gazing at the other wall or the room again.
Except he wasn't; he was looking right into her eyes, his head resting on his arms as he leaned over the table. He had this proud smirk on is face. His eyes were all heavy, his hair was slightly a mess. He almost looked cute. 'What're you doing?' May exclaimed.
'I'm paying attention.' He answered with a flirtatious tone. 'Stop that!' May groaned, blushing, grabbing paper and almost smacking him in the face with it. Drew started laughing as he backed off. 'Hey, stop! Fine, I'll listen to what you've got to say!' Drew snickered, protecting himself from the aggressive way May was flailing the paper around.
'I think I've got it,' Drew admitted, writing his answers on the paper as May gave an approving nod. 'Looks good! I'm so happy to hear you've got it!' May giggled. 'I told you practicing would help out a ton,' May snickered, giving him a friendly kick in the shoulder. 'Right. It's not your messy explanation that helped me at all,' he jested.
Mays happy expression faded as she turned angry. 'Hey, my explanation wasn't bad at all! You just suck at math,' May growled back. 'Correction, I sucked at math. Now I know the very bit of theory I was struggling with,' He replied haughtily, running his fingers through his hair. 'Whatever.' May scoffed.
'How late is it?' May asked, slightly tilting her head towards Drew. 'Uhm, it's 5:54PM,' Drew answered, looking up at the digital clock that stood above his bed. '5:54PM?! That means I need to get home— and you've got to eat! Do you cook all by yourself?' May yowled.
'I don't,' Drew answered, side-eyeing May. 'I just order food, that way I won't have to cook.' Drew snickered, folding his arms. 'But if you order food all of that stuff is unhealthy.' May groaned. 'Anyway, I've got to go home.. but I don't think I'll make it for dinner on time.' May scowled, dropping her head in disappointment.
'I know! I'll stay here and cook for us! And once dinner is over I'll head home! That way I don't lose much time,' May giggled. Drew let his head sink in annoyance. 'Really? You can just go home, you know. I'm getting tired of you. Plus I wouldn't assume your cooking is any good.' Drew groaned.
'You're just saying that! I cook for my parents fairly often, and they love my food!' She yelled angrily, clenching her fists. Not wanting to deal with Mays stubbornness, Drew gave in. 'Fine. But when you're done you're leaving.'
'All right! Here you go! I cooked one of my favorite meals,' May giggled, settling the plates down the table. 'I don't like to admit it, but that looks pretty good,' Drew admitted, inspecting the plates with food. 'Give it a try! I'm sure you'll like it,' May grimaced, sitting down and grabbing her fork. Drew appeared hesitant but he dug in.
It tasted amazing — he hadn't eaten anything but fast food in a while, and this change wasn't as bad as he thought it'd be. But he couldn't admit it out loud. 'How does it taste?' May asked, breaking him out of his daydreams. 'Oh! It tastes just fine,' He answered dryly, stabbing his fork into the food. 'That's a relief..' May huffed. 'See, I can cook.'
'I never say you couldn't. I said it wasn't any good,' he snickered. 'Sure!' May hissed, digging into her food once again, attempting to ignore him and his teasing. Drew watched the girl stuff herself with the food; she looked chaotic.
I think I never really realized it, but.. she's pretty cute. Look at how chaotic she is, just carelessly stuffing her mouth without showing any manners? In front of a rich guy?
He chuckled. 'What're you laughing at, Drew?' May hissed, cocking her eyebrow at him accusingly. 'Oh? Heh, nothing. Nothing that is any of your business,' Drew laughed, only seeming to spark her interest even more. 'No, really! What're you laughing at!' May groaned, letting her fork drop beside her plate.
'Maybe you should be more careful with stuffing everything in your mouth,' Drew shrugged with a smirk on his face. 'Your mouths all stuffed with your food.' he commented, pointing at her mouth.
Mays hand shot to her left side of her lip. 'What, here?' She asked, and proceeded to wipe the stuff off of her cheek. 'No, you've got the wrong cheek,' He answered, lifting himself up from his chair, still with a grimace on his face. With his eyes slightly narrowed he hung over the table and wiped the stuffing off of Mays lip. May immediately froze. 'W-Wha—'
'Stop being so messy.. this is a nice place and I don't like it to be ruined by you and your chaotic eating habits. Do you eat in such a terrible way at home, too?' He grinned, lying back in his chair. 'H-Heh? No, no I don't! I don't care to make a mess here because I don't mind you cleaning it up!' She protested.
Drew laughed. 'Sure. How about you finish your food off now? In a... neat way, would you mind?' Drew suggested, his smirk still present on his face. 'Or do you want me to get that stuff off of your face again?' He threatened, his eyes glistening with amusement. May blushed. 'I'll manage, thanks!' She groaned, continuing eating up her food.
May swung her backpack on her bag. 'Thanks for letting me stay here for dinner, Drew! Next time we'll stay at my place,' she promised. 'It's not like I had any choice..' Drew groaned quietly, that way May wouldn't hear. 'Whatever. See you later.' Drew jested, giving May a push towards the door. 'Bye?' May groaned.
Drew simply stuck up his hand in a wave — May turned around to look at him. Her frown cracked into a smile as she walked his way again and gave him a high five. 'Well done today, Drew! You worked hard to understand the pythagorean theorem! See you later!' May smiled as she ran off.
'Later?' Drew breathed.
Drew let his arm sink as he looked into the palm of his hand, still feeling the feeling of Mays hand against his. He snickered.
aw, that was it! i wrote this when i was in eigth grade i think, and i suck at math, so if i got anything wrong feel free to come at me. : )
