May calmly walked through the halls with her backpack on her shoulder. It was a rainy friday, which meant if she managed to drag herself through these last few hours of school she'd be all right; and then she could have some well deserved rest without someone annoying to piss her off.
She couldn't help but think about Drew more often; he constantly made a fool of her inside the classroom. The endless teasing, insulting and pestering was getting awfully tiring. Obviously she didn't want to mention that to Brianna, she was head over heels about him. Deadpanning, a flashback of that morning ran by her thoughts.
THAT MORNING...
May impatiently flicked her pen against her table. The entirety of the class was chatting, meanwhile she wanted some peace for herself to finish off her work. May blinked, eventually zoning out, the chatting of her classmates barely ringing through her ears.
Except, suddenly, she was awakened from her daydreaming as something soft hit her in the head. Startled, May spun her head around. Looking down at her feet she could see a wrinkled ball of paper. Curiosity struck her as she bent down and unfolded the ball of paper, revealing some text.
'Can't concentrate 'cause you're thinking of me?'
May's eyes widened as she looked down at the text. Blush crept onto her cheeks as she could immediately guess who had thrown it at her. Irritated, she cocked her eyebrows and turned towards Drew. And, like she guessed he would, he was grinning at her.
Drew gave a friendly wave as his eyes softened - as if, suddenly, he never meant to annoy her. However, the appearing nice only ticked her off even more. She smacked the paper down on the desk and angrily wrote on the other side of the paper.
'I was thinking of more crucial stuff than you, Mr. Oh-so-smart!'
Folding it up into a ball again she tossed it right Drew's way; the excitement of seeing him surprised bubbled up in her stomach. 'Miss Maple? Did you just toss a paper ball through the class?' A deeper voice could be heard. All the chatter quieted down as all eyes were on her.
May swallowed, trying to choke out a response. 'Well, yes.. but.. I...' May began, stuttering anxiously. The words could barely leave her mouth. '-Drew tossed a paper ball at me so I tossed it back at him!' May protested, pressing her hand to her chest, her eyes full of guilt and innocence.
'You shouldn't have tossed it back. Next time just inform me before throwing it back at him, if what you're claiming is true. You're lucky I let you go this time, but next time you can expect detention,' The teacher answered calmly and rationally, as May sweatdropped.
'Okay.. Thank you sir, I won't do it again..' May murmured back, and the teacher replied with a simple nod. May felt utterly embarrassed when given a few side eyes of her classmates before they had turned around.
With her cheeks blazing red she took a side glance at Drew, and he once again was staring back at her. The corner of his cheeks were cracked into a smirk, resulting in May only getting angrier. But she couldn't lose her mind now, she would be sent to detention.
May snapped back to reality as sweat ran her forehead. If that guy had humiliated her so many times in such a short timespan, who knows how much else he'd be able to do within time!
Luckily she had break now, so she didn't have that big of a chance of bumping into certain people that could flip her entire mood upside down. With her backpack still hanging over her shoulder she trotted downstairs, slightly uneasy by the amount of students that were swarmed around the halls and staircases.
Excited to talk to her bestfriends Dawn and Brianna again, she sped over to the cafeteria and curiously started searching around — but to her disappointment she couldn't see them anywhere. Perhaps they were studying in the library, or did they have no classes today? She might as well ask.
Dropping her bag in front of her feet, she dug into her bag to grab her cellphone; so she'd be able to call them. But anxiety rose in her stomach when, at the place were she always put her phone, she felt nothing except for her keys. Immediately she started panicking— her phone! where was it? Where did she put it?
Panicked, May dug into the other pockets of her bags, unfortunately without finding anything. Her breathing fastened as she pondered of where she could have put it.
Then it struck her— she had left her phone on her desk! She closed her bag, swung it over her shoulders and sped to the staircase, running up as fast as she was able to. Panting, she came to a halt before her classroom and curiously peeked in. She wanted to rush in and snag her phone, but her eyes widened when she looked into the classroom.
There were two guys about her age, and they were just naïvely playing with her phone. Both anxiety and anger stung into her stomach as she thought through of what she was able to do. Would she just barge in and try to grab the phone? If she wouldn't who knows what would happen to it! She took a deep breath before opening the door.
'Excuse me?' May started, sweat running down her neck. 'That phone is mine, I accidentally left it here.. could.. could you please hand it over?' May sputtered, keeping her calm posture. The heads of the boys turned and a smirk immediately appeared on their faces.
'Oh really?' One of the guys retorted, playfully tilting the phone around in the palm of his hand. "Well, if it really is yours... then that's so unfortunate! Finders are keepers,' The boy teased, cocking his eyebrow at May accusingly. 'But I need that! It's expensive!' May whined anxiously. 'Except we won't give it, at least, not right now. I think it would be fair if we could keep it for the day.'
Something in May snapped. She lunged forward and attempted to grab the phone from the boys hands. Unfortunately the boy had seen it coming and swiftly rose his arm up in to the air where May couldn't reach it. 'Too slow!' The boy started chanting, making May only more and more angry by the second.
But May wasn't able to reach it— there was nothing she could do. 'Catch it, Zach!' The boy yowled as he tossed the phone towards the guy that was standing behind May, right in front of the door. With widened eyes May could see the phone flying above her. But suddenly, without the other Boy being able to catch it, the phone was caught by someone mid air.
The laughing of the two boys went mute. What had happened? 'What're you two doing teaming up on one girl? Is that how pathetic you are?'A voice could be heard from beside them. May turned around to look.
It was Drew!
His eyes were full of annoyance and hatred. The boys immediately flinched. 'It's Drew!' They said in unison, confirming Mays guess. 'I swear we weren't doing anything, Drew. We were just playing around, we were joking..' One of the boys claimed anxiously. Drew furrowed his eyebrow and protectively pulled May towards him.
'And you think this girl here found that joke funny? Hm?' Drew challenged, as May slightly blushed while pulled to his chest. The boys hesitated before answering. 'No— you're right, Drew.' One of the guys said, giving up. 'That's what I thought. Don't ever play with people and their belongings ever again.' He spat, appearing pretty much very intimidating.
The boys nodded, and gave May much of an annoyed stare before leaving the classroom. May could feel the jacket of one of the boys by brushing past her arm, causing for anxiety to bubble up in her stomach again. May felt Drew sigh into her neck. 'Talk about Naïve,' he whispered to himself.
May shivered and Drew appeared as if he noticed. 'Are you okay?' He asked, letting her go. May swallowed before nodding. 'Yeah, I... I just.. I didn't see that coming.. I couldn't do anything...' May whispered, her head hanging low and her eyes stuck to her feet. 'Hey, they're gone now.' Drew whispered, patting her on the shoulder. May nodded, though her eyes were full of sadness. 'Why'd you save me?'
Drew frowned at her. 'I happened to walk by and saw those jerks pestering you. I can't let those nobodies make a fool of you, can I? If anyone has got to make you feel like a fool it'd be me,' Drew huffed, flicking his front bangs. May angrily glared at him accusingly.
Drew's eyes widened when he realized he had offended the girl. 'Aah.. I'm sorry. That wasn't a helpful comment at all.' Drew apologized, carefully pressing Mays phone back into her hands. 'Here you go. Enjoy your break,' Drew told her before turning around. May swallowed before reaching for his hand. 'W-Wait!' May exclaimed loudly, as her voice echoed through the empty halls.
Drew paused and turned around. 'What's up?' He asked with his eyebrows furrowed. 'I couldn't find my friends .. and.. I.. I'd rather not be alone right now..' May murmured, her voice slowly shifting into a whisper. Drew looked surprised, but he then nodded; he understood. 'Okay. Do you want me to come with you to find your friends?'
May hesitated— she'd rather not walk around the school with Drew by her side; that'd give her too much traction. But she couldn't be alone now, she was still extremely alert for anyone that could harm her. May sighed before answering. 'Yes.. that'd be nice..' May whispered back. 'All right. Let's go then?' May smiled weakly at Drew and followed him. 'So how did those guys get your phone? Drew asked while trotting off the staircase.
'I'd forgotten my phone in my class, and when I ran back up they were just messing with it and they refused to give it back,' May answered, quickly glaring at her phone who was still in the palm of her hand. 'Ah, that makes sense,' Drew hummed. 'It indeed is something like you to forget your phone. ' He snickered. 'Excuse me?' May growled. 'I've barely forgotten my phone!'
Drew rolled his eyes. 'Sure, June. I'd love to believe that's true,' He commented, shoving his hands into his pockets with a grin on his face. May angrily groaned as Drew was already down in the hallway. She wanted to quickly run down the rest of the staircase, but with her luck she slipped on the last step.
May squeezed her eyes shut, expecting any sort of impact from the fall. But instead she felt two arms wrap around her back. May opened her eyes in surprise; and once again, she had landed face first into Drew's chest. 'God May, you scared me..' Drew whispered into her ear. 'Why are you so reckless?'
May was barely able to reply. The only thought that ran through her mind was her just face planted right in Drew's chest, him hugging her. Her cheeks flashed red as she pushed herself back, landing on the staircase. 'Owww..' May groaned. Drew looked equally surprised. 'A-Are you okay?'
'Yes, fine!' May huffed beneath her breath, pulling herself up and quickly walking past Drew. Drew turned around and followed her. 'Are you embarrassed?' He teased, the corner of his lips pulling into a grin. 'Yeah, I'm embarrassed!' May answered angrily. 'I've made a fool of myself the entire time today!' She groaned.
'You sure have,' Drew commented dryly, once again shoving his hands into his pockets. 'Stop with your annoying comments and help me find my friends.' May groaned, grabbing him by the hand and pulling him along. 'Yes, of course. Don't pull me,' He retorted.
May felt excitement bubble up in her stomach when a few tables away she saw a bluenette and a red haired girl. She knew it were Brianna and Dawn. 'Brianna! Dawn!' May giggled, running over to the two friends. Brianna immediately greeted her. 'Hi!' she smiled. 'Hi May!' Dawn yowled. 'I couldn't find you guys,' May panted. 'Where were you?'
Brianna rose her eyebrows. 'We were searching for you!' She answered. 'Where were you the entire time?' Brianna inquired. 'She was with me,' A voice said behind May. May shivered as she felt a hand on her shoulder. Brianna immediately gasped. 'M-Mr. Drew!' Brianna squealed.
'Hi Brianna. How are you?' He asked, a polite smile crippling on his face. 'I-I'm just fine, thank you! How are you?' Brianna asked, stuttering. 'I'm doing well.' Drew retorted. Dawn awkwardly glared up at Drew. 'Who're you?' Drew asked, noticing the uneasy face Dawn made.
'I'm Dawn! One of May's friends,' She giggled. 'Cool. Nice to meet you.' Drew nodded, sitting down at the table. 'Drew? What're you doing?' May spat. 'I'm sitting down here to eat. Duh.' Drew whizzed, dropping his backpack on the ground. 'But you never eat in the cafeteria! Do you?' Brianna chimed in.
Drew quickly looked at May, his cheeks getting slightly redder before he yawned. 'Mm. It doesn't matter. Please, let me just eat here.' He answered vaguely. 'S-Sure?' Brianna replied, blush creeping on her cheeks. 'Fine,' May huffed, crossing her arms as she settled down. Drew began to eat his food.
'And were you really hanging out with Drew, May?' Dawn asked, cocking her eyebrow. 'No! I wasn't! He just likes to make stuff up to make a fool of me,' May hissed in embarrassment. Drew gave a halfhearted sigh as he relaxed his shoulders. 'Yeah. She's right. I don't really hang with people like her.' He mumbled, as softhearted as he could. 'Excuse me!?'
