"So…? How was it teaching a Defense class?"
Hearing the portrait to their chambers open, Aurora didn't even need to turn around to know it was Severus. Considering this week contained the full moon, Remus has asked if either one of them could substitute his class, as the previous night had been the reason for his absence.
Poor Remus, she thought. He doesn't like missing classes. The man loves his position as a Professor.
When the man didn't answer, Aurora turned from her position at the table to see her wizard slowly place his cloak upon the stand. "That bad, huh?"
"It was his class of Slytherins and Gryffindors."
"…and?" she asked, eyebrows raised.
"The infamous three were in this class."
"Oh good grief.," Aurora muttered under her breath. Resuming her own task, she dipped her quill into the ink, attention now diverted back to the piles of essays to be graded. "You knew that was a possibility, Remus did say this class was his Third Years."
Plopping himself beside her, Severus stole a drink from her steaming cup of tea. "Teaching the subject felt normal, like I'm supposed to teach the bloody subject. You know I've been trying to get that position for years."
"Of course I do, sweetheart. But Albus is only concerned for your well-being due to the curse upon the position. Regardless, you teaching potions or Defense Against the Dark Arts, I know you're a great Professor."
"Bloody hell Aurora, I despise teaching."
"Yes, all the staff are aware; myself included." She dunked her quill again. "However, that doesn't change my opinion that I think you're knowledgeable in either subject." Finished with the last parchment, Aurora finally turned her attention to Severus, whose arms were crossed in annoyance. "Alright, explain; what did Harry do this time."
"It wasn't just Potter. Weasley took his bloody time to turn to the required page; Granger spoke out of turn twice; and Potter complained about Quidditch tomorrow as an excuse to no do the assignment."
"Well, what was the assignment?"
Clearly avoiding eye contact, Severus instead focused on Merlin's position near the fireplace. "Two rolls of parchment on the qualities of werewolves and how to recognize them."
She only shook her head. "Of course he - ! No, I'm not going there." Standing to move behind Severus, her arms wrapped around his neck, leaning in to kiss his back. "Look, do you should've given them that big of an assignment?"
"Considering they couldn't identify the difference between an animals and a werewolf? I'd say yes!"
"Sev! You don't think that's blowing it out of proportion?"
The man said nothing.
Relaxing her arms, Aurora reclaimed her seat. "Well, what's done is done. The important question to be asked is this: why werewolves? C'mon, you know nocturnal animals are taught later on in the year."
"I'm…well aware."
Staring blankly at him, Aurora rolled her eyes upon realization. "Don't tell me this is all about Remus, isn't it."
"Aurora," he called her name sternly.
"Severus Tobias Snape, it is! Good gracious…are you really trying to out the poor man to his own students?" Slapping her forehead, the woman groaned. "Remus goes through enough as is! Homework aside, don't you think this was a bit too much?"
"Of course not. The man is a werewolf, Aurora! If he misses just one fo the potions we brew for him, he could be a threat to all the students and faculty!"
Sighing, the woman nodded in agreement, knowing it was all the truth. "Sev…I'm not saying I don't agree with you, it's just…"
"…he's your friend."
"Yes, he's my friend," she mimicked, poking him in the shoulder. "Not only that, Remus needs this job. You know people rarely, if ever, hire those inflicted with the disease."
"I…" Hand running through his hair, Severus cupped a cheek, holding his face upward as he leaned against the table. "Just so you know, I won't hesitate to notify the parents if he loses control."
Sighing again, the witch nodded once more. "And I won't stop you. Remus is my long-time friend, but the students' safety must come first." Face falling, she then twiddled around with her quill.
Hand gripping hers, Severus squeezed. "It may not seem like it, but I'm not doing this to spite the man."
She patted their molded grasp. "I know, and I am very thankful for that. You may not see it, Severus Snape, but you're a good man with a strong heart."
"Tch," he ignored her statement. Standing, he poured more water into the kettle on the stove. "Believe what you want."
"And I will. You believe I'm beautiful, tight?"
"Yes…?" He slowly emphasized his answer.
"Good, because I don't. SO believe what you want."
"Excuse me?" Leaving the heating pot not he stove, Severus swiftly knelt by her side, grabbing her face to stare back at him. "Bloody hell, I don't think so! You are the most beautiful woman in this world!"
Smirking, Aurora chuckled, leaning forward she kissed the tip of his nose. "See? You believe something about me, and I to you."
Blinking, Severus was left dumbfounded. Silent, his mouth fell open, yet no sound spilled out. "I-I…" Dropping his hands, he moved back to the stove as the kettle whistled. Muttering under his breath, Severus said, "You're a dunderhead."
Chuckling even more, Aurora went back to her stacks of parchment. "Oh, you're just upset that I beat you with your own words."
Stepping back to take her cup, Severus planted a kiss to her head. Pouring them both tea, he reclaimed the empty seat beside her. "Keep thinking you won," he patted her hand. Smiling at him, she continued her work.
They fell into a comfortable silence, which then became an eventual conversation. Taking half the stack of tests she had to grade, Severus decided to help. They were simply enjoying each other's company. It was great for the two to be able to spend time in such a way. With everything their jobs already required, they were still concocting the necessary potions for Remus. And now they were required to patrol more nights throughout the week ever since Sirius Black broke into the castle.
Aurora, being the gentle creature she was, offered herself to patrol more nights in a row than the other Professors.
By the time dinner had rolled by and passed, Severus and Aurora stepped back into their chambers. Severus decided to enjoy his evening with a glass of fire whiskey and a book by the fire. Aurora, having changed into something comfortable, but appropriate, drank an anti-sleeping potion and bid the wizard a good night.
There were always at least two Professors for night patrols. Tonight was Aurora teamed with Professor Sinistra; the latter decided to watch the dungeons up to the third floor whereas Aurora would manage the remaining floors.
Having agreed, Aurora spent the night wandering her section of the upper castle. To say the least, her night was uneventful. Other than Prefects and the Head Boys and Girls, all the woman did was wander, her wand activated with Lumos at the ready. In seeing no students, she was thankful, and hoped they heeded Albus; warning. Even if it was from fear, she was thankful she didn't have to hand out any detentions.
Just before dawn, Aurora stumbled into their chambers, eager to change and take a much needed nape. As it was Saturday, the Quidditch match wasn't scheduled until later that afternoon. In their bedroom, Aurora could see Severus asleep, wrapped in their comforter. Shedding all of her clothing, she threw on a loose t-shirt, making way to her side of the bed when she noticed a sleeping potion with a note from her wizard, explaining how he'd wake up up in several hours.
What would she do without him?
Gulping down the concoction, Aurora slithered into bed just as Severus' arms instantly cradled around her midsection. "It's about time you came to bed," was the last thing she remembered.
~ oOo ~
"…Aurora? …Aurora."
"…nah, n-no…"
Deciding to poke her nose, Severus sat on the bed's edge, ever waiting for the woman to wake up. Having spent last night and the night before on patrol, Aurora was clearly sleep deprived, which is why he decided to let her sleep in longer than she probably wanted. As it was now after one, Severus felt she deserved to wake up and enjoy some lunch before the match.
"Come on, lunch is ready, so you need to wake up."
Curling into herself, Aurora slowly opened her eyes, the outside rim slightly reddened as she rubbed whatever sleep remained. Accepting Severus' outstretched hand, she pulled herself into a sitting position, cracking her back as she stretched. Fingers running through her hair, Aurora glanced around the room towards the clock, not at all surprised to see what time it actually was. "Huh, I really slept that long, huh?"
Severus rubbed his thumb along her chin. "I know you needed your rest, so I may have let you sleep in longer."
"N-No, I," her mouth opened wide, a long yawn escaping. "I-I appreciated it," she mumbled, still rubbing an eye.
Standing, Severus gave her his hand once more. "Come on, you need something to eat. With the way the weather's acting, you're gonna want to eat before the match."
She was about to question what he meant when she turned to the windows to see the water of the Black Lake choppy, and as if on cue, thunder rumbled down to the depths of the dungeons. "Goodness, it's really crazy out there, huh?"
Wobbling as she stood, Severus grasped her shoulders, steadying the woman. "It's been raging for almost an hour and I doubt it'll let up anytime soon." Leading her out to the front room, Severus sat her at her chair, handing her one of the already made plates from the counter. "Toast, sausage and eggs, along with a cup of beans. Your favorite breakfast."
Drool pooling in her mouth, Aurora hummed in content, watching as Severus joined his seat beside her. "This looks delicious." Biting into her buttered bread, she moaned, not realizing how hungry her stomach truly was. "I'll never get used to you cooking for me; I love it." Leaning over, she kissed his cheek.
Sparing as much time as they wanted, the two remained in the kitchen table and simply talked. It was peaceful and Aurora loved every minute of it, knowing this moment was just her and Severus.
They talked long into the hour, not knowing the Quidditch match was soon upon them. Quickly showering and throwing her hair up in a bun, they dressed warmly with their boots, cloaks and scarves to keep them warm. Casting an anti-soaking charm before they exited the castle, Aurora was thankful, considering the rain would've instantly drenched their clothing the moment they stepped into the courtyard.
As they sat in their normal seats high into the stands, Aurora realized just how nasty the weather truly was. Lightning zapped the ground; thunder rumbled the skies; and rain pelted their skin in hard droplets. If the decision had fallen onto her shoulders, Aurora would've postponed the match. This weather was dangerous and no one deserved to put their lives on the line for a game of Quidditch. Granted, their magical powers would be able to heal and help those who would sustain injuries - because today, their would be injuries. Still, that didn't mean anyone should have to be hurt when the prospect could be avoided entirely.
Regardless, Albus declared the match was still set to take place, thus why the stands were packed full with students to watch the Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff match.
And what a match it was.
Thunder rumbled and lightning continuously struck the ground. Shivering in the stands, Aurora cast a warming charm on herself and Severus and still she was cold; she couldn't imagine what the players were feeling. The match was going on past an hour long with both sides having lost at least one player from lightning strikes.
"Severus," Aurora cried silently, leaning into his warmth. "Why didn't Albus cancel this match? Surely this isn't safe for the students."
"I do not know, Aurora. This weather is getting out of hand…" His voice drowned out as a scream tore their stare to the field. Knowing they couldn't intervene, Aurora stared as a Gryffindor Chaser's broom caught fire from a lightning strike. With nothing that could be done, she flared to the ground, narrowly smacking straight into Harry as he caught sight of the Snitch. Flying in its direction, the young Seeker flew past one of the seating towers.
Slipping as she stood, Aurora ran to the corner. No power she held could help either Seeker as they flew directly into the storm. Agitated from lack of sleep and the match, she growled, sitting back down as everyone waited for both to return, or for the match to finally be over.
Dropping a hand to her knee, Severus squeezed his fingers. "Calm down," he stated through the rain.
"I can't. S-Something's not right." Her teeth were clattering, breath growing slower when she realized the coldness seeping form her lips. Touching her mouth, Aurora realized just how cold they truly were and had to wonder if it was actually from the weather or -
Or something else.
"No dad! Don't hurt mommy again!"
"Huh? What'd you say?!"
"I said don't hurt mommy! She's done nothing to you!"
"That's it, now you're gonna get it, you little shit!"
"Noooo! Lemme go, lemme go! GYAAAHHHH!"
"Aurora!"
Shaken, the woman in question was twitching, her muscles vibrating as the same words echoed in her head as they had before. Blinking quickly at Severus, his eyebrows were knotted, not understanding the fit she was just having. "What's wrong? Is it…?"
"Mhm. Albus - I…we need to tell him. Albus!" Screaming his name over the rain, she turned sharply to see both Headmaster and Deputy Headmistress head's swivel in her direction. Standing, she screamed, "They're here! The Dementors are on the field!"
"Are you sure, Aurora?" Involuntarily twitching again, she nodded quickly, causing the aging wizard to glare back and forth across what he could see of the grounds. It was then everyone's attention turned towards the field. Gasps and screams echoed throughout the stands, fingers pointing to one lonely figure falling from the sky, twisting and lurching down towards the ground.
"No! Severus, that's Harry!" Aurora cried, taking hold of his hand tightly. The man knew what he was watching, disbelief coated his sight, not sure how the boy fell off his broom. If there was one compliment the Potions Master would grant the son of James Potter, is that the boy had the talent to ride a broom; not that he would ever tell him that.
"Arresto Momentum!" All the teachers turned to Albus who had stood in his seat. Casting the Slowing Charm, he dropped the rate of Harry velocity, but the boy would still sustain some damage from the fall. "Aurora! Go retrieve the boy and take him to the Hospital Wing!"
As Madam Pomfrey would have her hands full, Aurora knew of Albus' request; she was to help the medi-witch with all those who were injured. Removing her hand from Severus' didn't stop the woman from hastily saying, "Go find his broom and meet me at the Hospital Wing." Jumping over the railing, she quickly apparated to Harry's location. Seeing the boy in a slightly disfigured angle had the woman's heartache, but she quickly set that aside and checked his pulses. Students from the stands ran to her side when she had them stand back. If Harry had suffered any broken bones, she wanted to mend them right then and there.
As the tip of her wand burned red, she dragged the wood along Harry's body, noting he did indeed have broken several bones. His left arm and wrist, several fingers and his right tibia. Closing her eyes, Aurora muttered the correct spell to each bone, the fragments mending on their own as she checked his status once more. When she was content it was appropriate to now move his body, she asked Hagrid to help and carry him to the Hospital Wing. Several Gryffindors followed right behind, wanting to know the state of their friend's health.
It had been long afternoon.
Harry was now safely resting while Aurora attended to all other players who were injured. Madam Pomfrey was currently resuscitating a Hufflepuff Beater who was the only one to actually be struck by lightning. Thankfully, all of injuries were minor, such as a broken bone, some bruises and scratches here and there.
"Aurora?" Fred called her name from his position besides Harry. Stepping his way, he pointed towards the door where Severus was standing with a large bundle in his arms. Thanking him, Aurora stupid outside to see exactly what her lover was carrying. As he opened his arms, her mouth fell open.
"Oh no…"
"Unfortunately…his broom flew straight into the Whomping Willow."
"…you've got to be kidding me. Seriously?" Taking a section that had been the handle, Aurora stroked over the golden lettering which said Nimbus 2000. She remembered exactly the night of Halloween two years ago after the incident with the troll, how Minerva stopped and asked her if she was in the right to purchase the broom for Harry, considering the next morning would've been his first match. She had wholeheartedly agreed, knowing the boy would indeed love his gift. And he had. For two years the boy treated the broom as his treasure.
And now it was here, tattered and completely broken. There was no way it could be fixed. Even magic sometimes has its limitations.
"I…thank you for grabbing this, Severus, I appreciate it."
"I did this for you, not for him. Still…" Arms crossing, he trying peering inside. "How is he?"
Sighing, she held the bundle tightly. "Several broken bones, which I fixed before having Hagrid bring him here. Other than that, bruises and scratches. He'll definitely be sore come tomorrow."
"There's no doubt, considering the height at which he fell." Grasping her arm, Severus dragged the woman away from the door towards the corner fo the wall. "Aurora, I need to know. Are you alright?"
Her head tilted on confusion. "Of course I am. I mean, I'm now soaked and freezing, but nothing a warm shower can't fix when I'm done."
"No not that. I'm talking about when the Dementor's showed." Taking hold of her chin, Severus, lulled her closer. "…you were shaking; I've never seen you act that way before."
"I…" Dropping a sigh, she nodded. "The same thing happened when the Dementors attacked the train. I heard…I heard me screaming at my dad and…it was right before he beat me."
She was wrapped in his arms before she could say anything.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
Nudging her face into the crook of his neck, she didn't respond right away. Instead, she thought about the situation then replied, "I didn't think it meant anything."
Severus groaned. "Bloody hell you truly can be a dunderhead sometimes," he muttered. Kissing her forehead, he stepped back. "Could this be related to your reaction with the Boggart?"
She shrugged, not wanting to dive into a discussion regarding her birth father. "Could be but…at this point, it doesn't matter."
"Aurora!" Door burst wide open, George appeared, eyes wide as he quickly said, "Harry's awake!" Then he disappeared back inside.
Chuckling at the boy's manner, she smiled up at Severus, who still watched her incredulously. "Are you sure you'll be alright? You offered to patrol again tonight, didn't you?"
"I'll be fine, that nap earlier really helped." On her tip toes, she barely latched her lips against his. "I shouldn't be much longer, unless Pomona still needs my help. Can we have dinner by ourselves tonight?"
"Of course, I'll let the elves know; stay safe." With a swish of his robes, Severus turned, whisking himself down to the dungeons to work on whatever he wished to.
Reentering the Wing, she smiled at all the students surrounding Harry's bed. They all turned towards her, noticing the bundle in her arms as harry asked what had happened.
"Well…you fell off your broom," Ron answered honestly. Aurora snickered as she moved to stand beside Hermione. Dropping the bundle in Ron's arms, she placed her hand on Harry's forehead, checking to see if the rain caused any sort of fever.
"Really," Harry answers sarcastically. "I meant the match, who won?"
"Um…no one blames you, Harry." Hermione stood, glancing at Aurora whose smile fell. "The Dementor's aren't supposed to come inside the grounds. Dumbledore was furious! As soon as he saved you he sent them straight off."
"It wouldn't surprise me if Albus owls Fudge regarding this issue. First there was the incident with the train, now this? There's no guarantee the Dementors will keep the safety of the students in high regards." Draping towel over Harry's shoulders, Aurora crossed her arms.
"There's uh, something else you should know, Harry." Having seen the contents of the bundle he was now carrying, Ron pulled one of the sticks out for all to see.
Taking the section of the broken broom in her hand, Aurora held it tightly, leaning the section downward for Harry to see. "Your broomstick sweetie, it…unfortunately, it flew straight into the Whomping Willow and well…I'm so sorry."
Taking hold of the front piece, Harry switched his gaze back and forth between what he held and the bundle in Ron's arms. "There's…there's no way to fix it?"
She shook her head. "Sadly, no. Once a broomstick has been crafted, it's potency to fly lasts up until the piece is badly damaged or the wood breaks." Seeing the boys face fall, Aurora's heart broke for him. "I made sure all the pieces were gathered. Should we…would you like to take this with you?"
"No," he quickly muttered, tearing his gaze away. "Um…"
Her hand grasped his shoulder tightly. "Don't worry, I'll keep it safe with me until you want it."
"T-Thank you." Moving to stand, Harry was surprised to find Aurora's hand. Accepting it, she assisted in his standing, finding that, other than his body feeling weak, he seemed perfectly fine. Slowly releasing her hands to see if the boy could stand on his own, Aurora was relieved that he could. Excusing herself, she went to speak with Pomona about his release.
Now that she was in her office, Pomona seated herself just as Aurora entered. "Everything alright, Pomona?"
"Everything alright, Pomona?"
Glancing up at the woman, the elder witch smiled. "Oh yes dear, today's just been a bit much, don't you think? Albus never should've let the students play in such weather!"
"I said the same thing to Severus. The students were very lucky; there could've been more severe injuries."
"You are correct on that one. I did notice that Mr. Potter has awakened; how is he?"
She leaned against the doorframe. "He's awake and standing as we speak. I did a check on him but nothing's out of the ordinary, I think he'll just be sore for a few days. Did you want to keep him overnight?"
Pomona waved her hand. "No, no I don't think there's cause for concern. I trust your judgement. If you think he'll be fine, the boy can head back to his room."
"He'll be glad to hear that. Did you need more help though? I'll stay and - "
"You've done more than enough sweetie." Standing, Pomona enveloped the woman in a hug. "I'm thank full your help, but try and go enjoy the rest of your Saturday."
Asking again if the woman was sure, Aurora was shooed out of the office, laughing as she trekked towards Harry and his friends. Explaining the situation, she reclaimed the bundle from Ron's arms as they assisted Harry back to the Gryffindor Tower. Watching as they left, Aurora was content with the end result as she believed her words to Pomona. With the Dementors having trekked onto the field, the afternoon could've ended much worse.
It did seem the Dementors were working on their own accord, rather than the orders they were given.
~ oOo ~
"Hey mom…I'm back."
It had been several days since the Quidditch match to which it was now the second of November - the anniversary of Cassandra's death.
As Severus had gone the previous year, Aurora wanted the man by her side. Tonight, however, he was plagued with grading papers and exams, leaving the man no time to spend with Aurora. He was upset with himself, not realizing what night it was. Aurora, being who she is, was understanding and merely kissed the man, saying it was perfectly okay with him missing this night.
Earlier she had been welcomed by open arms of Rose. Having apparated from Hogwarts, Aurora traveled to her childhood home, where the two conversed for several hours, reliving their memories when Cassandra was still alive. They also spent this time merely catching up, as Aurora was mainly kept at Hogwarts this year with Sirius having escaped and creating the potion for Remus. Thankfully, Rose understood, as they owled each other as often as they could.
The two really were best friends.
Come sunset, it had started to rain once more, the weather not wanting to lift as storm after storm crossed over Great Britain. As she knew Aurora preferred visiting her mother alone, Rose had gone and paid her respects that morning. With the rain beating down, Aurora decided to leave earlier, hugging her best friend as she left. Having apparated right in front of her mother's grave, the woman couldn't tell if it was merely the rain running down her face or something else.
Kneeling in the mud, Aurora waved her hand, the already prepared bouquet of flowers she created appeared in her hand. Roses mixed with Star-Gazer Lillies; her mother had always loved odd floral combinations. Setting the bouquet atop the soaked grass, she waved her wand, casting a charm to prevent the beautiful flowers from wilting for some time.
She didn't wait in silence. Running a hand down the tombstone, Aurora sniffled, knowing this time, it really was tears coursing down her cheeks. The salt mixed with fresh rain, blurring her vision from reading the inscription, though she didn't need to see in order to speak aloud what it said as she had memorized the words.
"Hi mom," she cried unto the rain. "I…I missed you. It's been a very long year since I was last here. So much has happened, you wouldn't even believe it all."
She spent a majority of the evening simply talking to the gravestone, explaining everything that had happened. The events regarding the Chamber of Secrets; how she was struck by the basilisk and was petrified; the fight between her and Severus; their break up and their eventual make up. Remembering al said events was a lot for the woman, but she laughed through it all. Looking back on what happened with Severus was still caused her chest to tighten. She wholeheartedly believed his words and how he wasn't in love with Lily anymore; that didn't mean the pain didn't stop lingering. It was there, gradually fading away with each passing day.
"You'll never believe this mom. Do you remember Sirius Black? The one who bullied me when I was in school, the same one who was arrested? Get this; he escaped! He's a wanted man and he somehow entered the castle last week!" Laughing into the night, Aurora wasn't understanding what was funny. "It's been a crazy term. Severus and I were asked by Albus to make the Wolfsbane Potion for Remus - oh yeah! Remember Remus Lupin? He'd now the Defense teacher at Hogwarts. Can you believe it? Everyone from my school days are coming back to Hogwarts."
Of course, she didn't expect a reply. The coolness she expected to feel wasn't there. Maybe she was numb, except there was a sudden warmth surrounding her limbs, bring a smile to the young witch's face. She knew her mother was listening. If anyone believed her or not, the witch didn't care.
"I miss you mom," she suddenly cried. Keeling over, Aurora collapsed into the ground, fingernails digging into the softened earth. "I miss you. Why aren't you here? Why aren't you here with me?!"
Falling into the ground, the rain pelted her skin. She hadn't even tried casting a chair to prevent the rain from soaking her clothes. Coughing into the night, Aurora tried getting up, except her body wouldn't let her. The darkness of the night seeped into her vision as she gazed upward. The stars grew hazy, becoming larger as her eyelids fell them jumped back open.
"…Severus."
Back at Hogwarts, Severus had just finished grading all essays for every class. Moving to the stacks containing all exams, he knew this shouldn't take him that long when Sapphire suddenly screeched into the night. Causing the man to jolt, Severus spilt the ink pot as the dragon flew through the portrait down and out the chambers.
With a roll of his eyes, he quickly cleaned the mess. "Silly dragon," he whispered. It didn't take long for the dragon to reappear within the chambers, beak shut tightly around a piece of parchment as she landed directly in front of Severus. Dropping the parchment onto his hand, Severus rubbed the creature's head. "Good girl," he cooed, almost mimicking the way Aurora spoke to her pets. "Now, who is trying to reach me at this time of night?"
Noting it was well past one in the morning, he had been wondering where Aurora was, as she had class early the next morning. It wasn't like her to be out this late unless she was patrol , she didn't tonight, though Severus was still concerned. Examining the envelope, it only read his name, so he ripped it open, curious to find it was from Rose herself.
Severus,
I'm aware this might reach you late into the evening. I wanted to inform you that Aurora is safe here in the house, which is why she hasn't returned to Hogwarts. She went off to see her mother on her own, but when she hadn't returned by eleven, I knew something was wrong so I apparated to her grave. I found around asleep in front of her mother's grave, shivering and soaked to the bone. I'm aware she has class in the morning so she will stay here for the night unless you want to come get her. I'm not sure when you will receive this letter. No matter the time, you are welcome in our house; I will be up all night checking on Aurora. She…she didn't seem to be herself.
Sincerely,
Rose.
Paper fallen from his hands, Severus was up and retrieving his cloak before it could touch the table. Leaving Merlin and Sapphire, they squeaked and cried by his sudden movements. Hastily making his way through the castle, he nearly ran to the point outside the shield protecting the castle when he apparated to Aurora's childhood home. Upon the front door, he knocked as appropriate as he could, despite wanting to tear down the wood. Rose was quick to answer, her eyes seemingly tired as his.
"Thanks for coming, Severus."
"I couldn't wait til morning."
"In all honesty, I was hoping you wouldn't." Following her up the stairs, Rose continued. "I don't mind watching Aurora, I just know she has her students to consider." Outside her door, the glanced inside. Aurora was covered in numerous blankets, her back towards them as she curled into the fetal position.
Walking up to her side, Severus dropped a hand to her forehead, thankful her body temperature was normal. Glancing up at Rose, he questioned, "So what happened?"
"Exactly as I told you. She hadn't come back like she said she would and I started to get worried so I went to find her. Somehow she was asleep at the foot of her mother's grave, so when I brought her back here, I dried all her clothes and put her to bed. She hasn't woken up at all."
"And she won't. " Severus stroked the woman's hair. "Once she's out, Aurora won't wake up unless she wants to."
"Yeah, I've noticed. I just…" Arms crossed, Rose dropped her voice. "I wondering what was going through her mind? I mean, why would she do something like this? I was worried sick!"
"I couldn't say, Rose. However, I'm not sure Aurora knows either. It's been a rough week at school, and I know she's been pushing herself too far."
"Has she?" Rose seemed surprised. "She did mentioned everything that's been happening at school with Sirius and the potion, but I…I didn't think it was affecting her like this."
Heaving a sigh, Severus wasn't sure what to feel. Sure, he was relieved that no serious harm had befallen Aurora, yet that didn't mean he wasn't feeling some sort of anger at her recklessness. "She's also been taking on extra patrols at night to help the other staff. Aurora feels that because she has less classes than everyone else, she should put in more work in other areas."
"Oh no…That's Aurora, but…she shouldn't feel that way at all. When was the last time she got any rest?"
"Probably the night before last was the most she's slept at night. She's been trying to live off of potions, but that only goes so far."
"Shouldn't she know that?"
"You'd think," the man snickered.
"Will you two…stop talking?"
Jumping at her voice, Rose ran to Aurora's side. Both the male and female glanced down, one clasping Aurora's hands, the other stroked her hair. "How're you feeling?"
Sniffling, Aurora rolled over onto her opposite side to face them. Surprised Severus was there, she reached upward for his hand to squeeze while her other remained with her friend. "Other than tired, I'm fine. What're you doing here, Sev?"
"I owled him, Aurora. You were gone longer than expected and when I found you, you were asleep in the cemetery."
Not so surprised by Rose's answer, Aurora blinked several Tims, eyes continuously cast between the the two of them. "She informed me what happened and I came here as soon as I received her letter." Rubbing his temple, Severus didn't know how to approach the subject. Could he understand her for falling asleep on her mother's grave sight? No. Did it make sense considering her lack of sleep from the past week? Yes. "What in Merlin's name were you thinking?" Scowling, he knelt to the floor, whisking away hair strands from her face.
She shrank into the bed. His neutral tone only covered the anger swirling within him, and Aurora knew he was fuming. "I didn't mean t-to." She sniffled again, rubbing the tears away from her eyes. "I-I miss my mom!" She finally cried, leaning further into his hand, which had now dropped to cup her cheek. "This year's been so bloody tiring a-and I just wanted to see my mom!"
Pulling the woman into his arms, Severus knew her lack of sleep was truly taking a hold on her. Looking up to Rose, she covered her mouth, knowing Cassandra's death weighed heavily on Aurora's here even after two years. However, neither of them just how much.
Stroking her hair, Severus kissed her head. "It's alright…I'm right here."
"B-But my mom isn't…"
Kneeling as well, Rose took her friend's hand, their sight seeking one another. "No she isn't Aurora. Your mother's time has ended, but she is with your father now. But you…you have me, and Severus, and all your friends at Hogwarts, your students…"
Aurora tightened her hold on them both as she nuzzled into Severus' broad chest. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "This year…I don't know why it's taken a toll on me, but I just really wanted to talk to my mom about it a-and then everything hit me while at her grave that…that she's not with me anymore."
"Your mother's in a better place, Aurora," Severus commented. "She's no longer in pain."
She nuzzled even further. "…yeah, I know." Covering her mouth, Aurora yawned, eyes drooping once more. "I'm still learning to live without her."
"We all are, sweetie," Rose said. "You're…not the only one who misses her. She was loved by many." Releasing her arms around Severus, Aurora moved towards her friend where they embraced, silently grieving for the woman missing from their lives. "Thank you for taking care of me, Rose."
"Anytime, my dear Aurora. You're my friend, I'd do anything to help you, whatever you need."
Standing, Severus grasped Aurora underneath her legs, carrying her as Rose led them downstairs. Already asleep in his arms, Severus bid the woman a goodnight, stating she was more than welcome to visit Aurora at Hogwarts anytime. Rose was pleasantly surprised and graciously accepted his offer, stated the three of them should have dinner soon to become more acquainted.
Apparating back to Hogwarts, Severus swiftly maneuvered through the castle to the dungeons, seeking their chambers as he passed through. Thankful he wasn't bombarded by Merlin or Sapphire, he trekked to the bedroom where he placed Aurora on her side of the bed. Removing her shoes and jeans, the woman remained asleep, not once fidgeting to wake or blinking an eye. The poor woman was exhausted, pushing herself to far to help others anyway she could. Removing his clothing for something comfortable, Severus kissed the woman, holding her close as he, too, found himself lost in the land of dreams.
Come morning, Severus awake to find himself alone in the bed, the sheets beside him barely warm, indicating Aurora hadn't been up too long. Trudging into the outer room, he found the woman in question pilling a stack of pancakes onto a plate. Catching his movement from her peripheral, Aurora dropped the frying pan to the stove, pulling Severus into her arms.
"What's this for?" he asked groggily.
"For last night," she stated simply. "I wanted to make breakfast as an apology."
He shook his head. "An apology isn't needed, Aurora, but it is appreciated."
"Oh come on. If you were in my situation and I received an owl in the middle of the night, I'd be furious."
"I was furious."
"You were seething," she smiled, stepping closer.
"I was seething," he muttered against her lips. "However, there's no point fretting over what's happened. You're safe, and it seems you were able to get some sleep last night."
"Surprisingly," Rubbing one eye, she added, "Somewhat. I'm still very tired. Also, I'm not hungry, even with this delicious smell of pancakes."
Eyebrow shooting into his hairline, Severus covered her forehead with his palm. "You haven't really eaten at all this week, Aurora. What's really going on?"
"Nothing, I swear!"
He knew she was telling the truth, but still didn't believe her. "Are you sure? Do you need to go see Madam Pomfrey?"
"No, no, I'll be alright. But you eat before the pancakes get cold! I'll take a shower, there's some things in my classroom I need to take care of." Grasping her wrist as she walked by, Severus rammed his lips into hers. As quick and forceful as it was, he pulled back, leaving the woman dazed, and slightly turned on. Knowing full well she needed to shower, Aurora stepped into their bedroom before anything else could take place, as sad as a thought that was.
Later that morning after her first class, Aurora had a free period right before lunch was to being. Spending the free time grading assignments, she proudly placed all completed stacks off to the side, deciding now it was time to prepare for her class after lunch. Standing, she moved to step away from her chair when darkness clouded her vision, her knees nearly buckling underneath her suddenly weakened state.
"Huh, well that was weird."
Ignoring what just occurred, Aurora loved to her chalkboard, scribbling down quick notation for herself as she maneuvered through her personal notes to see what was needed for the next lesson. Deep in thought, the board was almost halfway covered in her lecture for the Potions class when the door suddenly opened, five individuals calling her name. Screeching, the chalk fell to the ground, breaking into several pieces as she tried soothing her ever-beating heart.
Turning to see it was the infamous three and the Weasley twins, she bent down to grasp the chalk she fixed with a muttered spell. "Goodness gracious you guys!"
"Sorry Professor, we didn't mean to scare you."
"Yeah well, unfortunately it happens quite often." Turning back to the board, she continued scribbling the sentence she was writing to finish before she forgot her thought. "Professor Snape does find it amusing how easily scared I get."
"P-Professor Snape? Amuse? Tch, right right," Ron scoffed.
"I'll have you know, Ronald, that there is more to Professor Snape than you give credit. You only see the teacher side of him." She turned to finally acknowledge the students in her classroom. "Now, how can I help you five and why aren't you in your classes?"
"Ours was canceled," the twins answered in unison.
"And we were dismissed early from ours," Hermione commented, dropping her bag onto the desk she used to occupy the year prior.
"How about that! So what brings you down here? None of you are in my classes."
"Actually, I had a question for Professor Snape about our assignment, but he's in class right now." George walked closer to her and pulled a piece of parchment out of his Potions textbook. "I was wondering if you could help? Considering how awesome you are as a teacher and all."
"Uh-huh, flattery is nice but I promise it won't get you anywhere, George. At least your mother raised you with manners."
"Yes ma'am," the twins answered together again.
Blinking, their mannerisms caused the woman to smile. "How the bloody hell she lives with you is an entirely different thing. Alright, so what brings you three here?"
"We wanted to talk about Buckbeak's case.," Hermione answered. "Hagrid hasn't received any notice from the Ministry about a trial, but knowing Lucius, it's only a matter of time."
"I agree. It's better to start early and be prepared than not." Moving to. Her desk, she took out a small notepad and wrote down several books on the information they would most likely need. Laws regarding magical winged beasts; Ministrative Hearings; even a book on basic law in general. Handing the note to Harry, all five glanced at the sheet, curious to know what was contained in each book. "I'm well aware of the laws governing our world, however, you three are not. I would start there to gain an understanding of what Hagrid and Buckbeak will be up against."
"But we need his defense! Will these books even help?"
Leaving against her desk, Aurora traced the lace of her blue dress. Rubbing her temple she smiled the the pain. "They will, I promise. Ron, are you versed in magical creature laws? Are you aware of rules and regulations regarding a proposed defense?" The boy shook his head, cheekbones tinted pink. "What about mistreatment of magical creatures or their caregivers?"
"N-No…" he whispered, embarrassed.
"And that's ok, you there are only Third Years. I doubt you'd randomly pick up one of these books and read it for fun - you don't count, Hermione." Aurora stated quickly, noticing how the girl's hand was about to shoot into the air, indicating she had read one or more of the books on the list. "I find it funny how similar you and I are. I picked these books and read them during my First Year."
They all snickered.
Retrieving more notes from her desk, she said, "Back to your question, read those books and then we'll get with Hagrid and discuss what he wants to do. Until then, you're more than welcome to stay here and work on some homework or relax until lunch."
"Awesome!" Ron said, his bright smile contagious.
Chuckling, Aurora turned towards the twins. "As for you two, let me finish writing my notes on the board and we'll focus on your paper."
"Thanks Aurora!"
Rolling her eyes, the woman found it endearing her students, even those who weren't, were set on calling her by her first name rather than her staff title. It didn't bother her at all, though she new Severus would have some words if he heard them state her name.
"T-This shouldn't take me that long, alright?"
Unpacking their books onto the desks, Fred saw the woman slightly tremble. "Hey, you ok Aurora?"
"Yeah, I'm just pretty tired. It's been a long week since Sirius Black broke into the castle."
"That was wild!" Ron commented. The rest then conversed regarding the wanted murderer, noting how all the staff had been on high alert since. They couldn't imagine the stress their Professor were feeling and understood why Aurora seemed to be somewhat pale. Having seated themselves, they jerked their attention to the chalkboard when a harsh, screech entered their ears.
And then there was a thump.
"Aurora!" Hermione cried.
Running towards the Professor, they were shocked and concerned to see she had collapsed against the ground. Looking at the chalkboard, they noticed she had been writing, but her last few words had become mingled together and smudged. The very last word had been slanted, with a sharp line having struck the board and ran down towards the bottom when she fell.
Everyone cried her name as Harry knelt down, gently rolling the woman to her side. Fingers against her neck, he checked her pulse. "It's really low," he commented.
"I'll go get Professor Snape!"
"Why him?" Ron argued.
"Have you not realized they're always together? Always sitting by each other at meal times? He's the best chance we've got!" Running out of the room, Hermione beelined straight for her Potions room, the same one she would have after lunch. Reaching the door fairly quickly, she wasn't sure what to do. Run inside? Knock?
She opted for the second.
Knocking really quickly, she then proceeded to burst the door open. All eyes turned to her, even Severus standing at the front of the class turned sharply to the unexpected intruder. "Professor Snape!"
"Ms. Granger! What is the meaning of this?!" Stomping his way over to erase her presence from his class, she spoke loudly for him to understand the dire situation.
"It's Professor Warrington! S-She needs help!"
Her words stopped the man right in his tracks. "Professor Warrington? What's wrong?" He words were fast. Dropping the textbook onto his desk, he waltzed right up to Hermione. "Tell me now what is wrong with Aurora," he whispered when he was beside her.
"She collapsed!" She cried. "S-She was talking to us one minute, and then the next she's on the floor and won't wake up!"
Eye widening, he turned to his class. "Everyone will wait here and copy the rest of the notes!"
Walking wasn't allowed as the man ran from his classroom and around the corner to Aurora's. Bursting through the open door, he growled at seeing all those surrounding here. "Move!" he said sharply. The other four complied, noting their Potions Master was definitely in no mood. Kneeling, Severus cupped her face, satisfied to feel she still had a heartbeat, albeit rather slow. "Aurora. Aurora!" Calling her name did nothing, so he glared at those who were in the room. "Potter! Explain to me what has happened!"
"W-We honestly don't know! We came to talk with Professor Warrington, next thing we know she's on the floor!"
Hoisting the woman into the air, Severus made for the door. "Hermione, go instruct my class they are dismissed for the rest of the day. The rest of you, follow me to the Hospital Wing. Now!"
Urging his way through the castle, Severus didn't care about the other students when he used several secret passages to maneuver himself from the dungeons up to the Hospital Wing near the clocktower. Fred and George opened the door for their Professor when Madam Pomfrey glanced up from adding sheets to a spare bed. Upon seeing Aurora, she gasped as Severus placed her down, the woman now seemingly had difficulty breathing. Her strangled breath sounded as if she was being choked.
"What on earth has happened?!" Instantly moving her wand over Aurora's body to check her vitals, the medi-witch grew concerned that she wasn't conscious.
"I'd like to hear the same. Potter, Weasley's, explain!"
Harry cried, "We have, Professor!"
"He's right sir," George said hastily. "The five of us went down to see Aurora knowing she had a free period before lunch; we all needed her help with something."
"She said to give her a few minutes to finish adding the notes to her board when we all glanced away." Fred added to his brother's testimony. "We weren't even looking when next thing we knew she was on the floor! We tried to wake her up but…she wouldn't!"
Severus considered the boy's answers. He knew Aurora had been acting weird these last few days. She hadn't gained any sleep, she was barely eating anything… "Let me ask you this: did Professor Warrington seem…off to any of you?"
All four nodded their heads when Hermione entered the room.
"How is she?" The young witch cried out, running to the woman's bedside. "Madam Pomfrey?"
The tip of her wand glowed red as she ran it down the length of every limb, ensuring she traced over specific areas such as the heart, lungs and down her limbs. "It might take me some time to consider a prognosis. In the meantime, I think it best if you children head down for lunch." She smiled sadly up at them, knowing all they wanted was to be by their Professor's side. "Aurora would appreciate you gaining your strength rather than staying by her side."
Fred opened his mouth to speak, though promptly closed his lips due to the glance from Severus. Complying, they each stole one last look at their Professor, bidding the woman a swift recovery when they finally closed the door after they had left.
Two heartbeats later and Severus was already over the medi-witch.
"You know what's wrong with her."
"Possibly, however there are severals questions I must ask you, Severus. Has she been eating at all, Severus? According to this, she's lost nearly ten pounds."
"Ten pounds? H-How…?"
"That's my question. You live with her, what's been happening within the past week? She didn't seem like this several days ago. The poor things face is sunken in, she's lost weight…"
Seating on the bed beside her, Severus held his stare with the unconscious woman. "It's been like this ever since Sirius Black broke into the castle last week. She's assigned herself more nightly patrols, so she's been living off of potions and hasn't been sleeping at all." He then went on to explain about the events from the previous night. "I haven't really said anything, but I've noticed she's not eating or drinking as much."
"Hmm, then I believe my assumption based on what you'd told me is correct." Dropping her wand to the bedside table, Pomona grabbed the blanket at the end of the table, draping it over the sleeping woman. Acknowledging the concerned look Severus bore, she gripped his arm, nodding in affirmation that everything would be ok. "Everything will be fine, Severus. Her sudden weight loss initially caught me off guard, but I believe she is suffering from a severe form of sleep deprivation."
"Sleep deprivation?"
"Exactly. You said she's practically been living off of Replenishing Potions, correct? Because of that, she hasn't gained the appropriate amount fo sleep our body needs to heal during the night. Simply, Aurora needs a very long nap, and she will stay here until I feel she's gained such."
"…thank you, Pomona."
"There's no need for thanks, my dear. Tis my job. Besides, Aurora's students seemed to be very fond of her. Did you hear how they were using her first name? Not many Professor's allow their students such a privilege." Handing the man a chair, Severus opted to switch. Closer to Aurora, he gripped her hand. Deja vu settled into the man's mind from the previous years end when she was petrified. Now, she was nothing but simply asleep; the thought calmed Severus' mind just a little.
Brushing aside her hair, Severus knew the moment Aurora woke up he was planning on doing two things:
One: He would coddle the woman and tell her he loved her.
Two: He would then call her a dunderhead and lecture Aurora on how stupid she had been to not gain any sleep.
Or maybe he wouldn't lecture her at all, Severus hadn't decided. In that moment, he was thankful she was going to be just fine. It was then the tightening of her fingers within his calmed his heart. Watching as her head turn towards his, Aurora was able to smile, curling to face him. And then she was back to sleep.
That's all Severus needed to know that she was going to be alright.
But he was still going to call her a dunderhead.
~ oOo ~
Please no hate. I worked really hard on this despite having no willpower to do so.
