Chapter 13
"I know. I'm changing it because this week we're expecting lots of Crisis One calls and since Vic helped start it with Miller, I figured Vic was the right one to do it. I'm changing up the schedule for the next few shifts right now anyway." Andy told her, not wanting to deal with her whining. "Now go. Both of you." Andy shoos them out of the office and Andy sighs, sitting down in her chair. This is going to be one hell of a day.
It was a couple of hours later when Andy had finished adjusting the schedule and then came out of her office and joined the rest of the team in the beanery.
"Hey, captain." Andy heard her teammates say scattered.
"Hi, guys." Andy smiles. She turned to get a drink from the fridge and when she turned around, she saw everyone staring at her and Vic had moved closer to her. "Alright, fine. Go ahead and ask whatever you want to ask." Andy gave permission, rolling her eyes, ready for all the questions to start.
Jack raised his hand first and Vic gestured that he could go ahead and ask. "When did this happen?"
"The relationship a couple of weeks ago, getting married, a day ago," Vic answered.
Maya raised her hand and both Vic and Andy glared at her. "Yes, Bishop?" Andy asked, trying to keep her cool.
"If this started two weeks ago what made you decide to get married so quickly?"
"Vic and I had gotten out of the elevator at my apartment, and we were kissing and when we got to the door my aunt and cousin Michelle were there. My aunt had a bad reaction and said that if she knew I was into girls she never would've let me back in the family. Her own daughter is gay, and they barely tolerate her. She seemed furious and 100% serious about cutting me out of the family. I decided I should get ahead of what might happen."
"Which was her aunt maybe telling someone at the department," Vic added.
"And did she?" Travis asked.
"She did. We didn't find out until now though." Vic answered.
"So, what's going to happen now?" Jack asked.
Andy and Vic looked at each other. Vic chose to speak up, "Nothing. We filled out the correct paperwork and showed Ross our marriage license."
"Just like that? That easy?" Travis asked, eyebrows raised.
Andy shook her head. "Nothing about this has been easy, Travis. The fact that we've had to keep this a secret has been hard on both of us." Andy looked down, "It sucks that we've had to keep our feelings hidden. Our love, hidden."
Everyone was silent for a moment, taking in what Andy said. Vic squeezes Andy's hand "At least we don't have to anymore babe." Vic reminded her, a gentle smile on her face. Andy smiles back at her and looks at Travis again.
"Alright, I know you guys probably have more questions, but we are at work right now and I need you guys to focus." Andy narrowed her eyes at the group, not needing to say another word as they ran off to do house chores. Andy looked at Vic and smirked.
"You too, babe. Get back to work." Andy told Vic with a smile on her face and turned to walk back to her office.
Once Andy got back to her office she sat down and just sighed. She was exhausted from the last couple of days, and she could only imagine how tired her wife was too.
Andy was only in her office for all of two minutes when there was a knock on her door. Andy sighed, ran a hand through her hair and called out for the person to come in. When she saw that it was Robert she was surprised.
"Lieutenant Sullivan, what can I do for you?" Andy asked her ex-husband.
"Cut the crap, Andy." Andy looks taken aback but quickly recovers and stands up.
"What the hell are you talking about, Lieutenant?" Andy asked, an eyebrow raised.
"What's really going on with Vic? We all know you're not into women so what the hell is this really about?"
"What is this really about? We both know that you're into men and not women. So, what the hell is your angle here?"
Andy was in shock from how her ex-husband was talking to her. Glaring at him she spoke, "Listen to me and listen to me well," Andy told him, lowering her voice to a threatening tone. "There is no "angle". I don't know how you could think this was just some ploy, but I can assure you that it isn't, Robert. You may not be able to accept it now, but you will in time so get over yourself and your thoughts about me." Andy told him, walking to the door and opening it. "Now get back to work." What Andy failed to notice was that a few of her co-workers were standing outside the door.
"No. I need to know what you're plotting." Robert stood tall. "There's no way you could ever love someone." Robert doesn't even notice the flash of pain that went through Andy's eyes and just continues, "You confuse "lust for love" right? I mean that's what you told Jack outside the restaurant during Maya and Carina's wedding, right?" Andy opened her mouth to reply but was cut off by Robert continuing his rude comments "You only have love for this job and nothing or no one else. Otherwise, we would still be married."
Andy flared her nostrils and stopped Robert's rant. "We broke up because of how I felt you were handling things. I think we would have drifted apart in the end anyway. But Sullivan, that's not what we're talking about." Andy sighed, "I love her, Robert. Whether you believe that or not it's the truth. Now I need you to leave my office. I have work to do and so do you." Andy told him, gesturing with her hand for him to get out of her office.
Robert shook his head and walked out of the office but stopped short and turned back around to face her, not noticing his co-workers in the reception area. "We both know you're going to screw this up. You screwed up with Ripley. You screwed up with me. You screwed up your chance to become a permanent captain at station 23 when you got it shut down."
Andy's eyes narrowed, "That wasn't my fault! I was talking to Chief Ross about the serious problems there and she got my words twisted!"
"Oh, shocker. It's someone else's fault according to you. Are you ever going to take accountability for your own actions?" Robert asked her but once again cut her off before she could defend herself. "You had a real shot at 23 to make something of yourself but instead got the house shut down, caused unemployment for a dozen firefighters for months, and a few days later drunk at a bar" he paused but continued a few beats later *TW!*
"And then you ended up getting fucking assaulted by some random ass guy behind the bar." Robert continued, failing to notice the tears that were now welling up in her eyes.
Jack, not being able to just stand back anymore stepped in "That's enough!" Jack walked up to the pair and stood in front of Andy. "What the hell are you trying to accomplish talking to your CAPTAIN this way? Look I get that this is going to be an adjustment, but just back off and go back to work, Sullivan." Jack told him, eyes hardening. Even though he didn't understand Vic and Andy's relationship, he would never talk to his one-time ex the way that Robert just talked to Andy, bringing up one of the worst moments in her life at that.
Robert glared at Jack and just huffed and walked away. Jack sighed and turned to face Andy and saw the water that had been forming in her eyes. "Captain…" was all Jack had a chance to say before Andy cut him off.
Andy swallowed, trying to regain some of her composure, "Get back to work Gibson, and the rest of you as well. There's too much to do than to just stand around listening to other people's conversations." Andy said to the group, turning her back to him and then closing her office door.
Jack, Travis, Maya, and Warren all stood in silence, all surprised at what just happened. It took a few more moments before someone spoke, it was Maya.
"So, who gets to tell Vic what just happened?"
"Who gets to tell me what?" Vic asked coming into the area, eyebrows furrowed. Maya looks at the office door, turns back to Vic and is unable to come up with any words. "What is going on?"
Meanwhile, in the office Andy locked the door, slid down the wall next to it and let the tears fall freely, unable to escape the panic forming from thinking about that night.
Wonder what happens next…
I'm sorry, I had to make Robert a dick in at least one of my stories and I picked this one. I apologize if you like him, but this story isn't about him or him and Andy anyway.
Anyway, you finally get a new chapter from me! YAY!
