Chapter four: Kagome Figures Things Out

One week later:

Kagome wakes up in her sleeping bag surrounded by her friends. Today's the day she goes back home from the feudal era for a few days. She sits up and looks around, realizing the sun isn't even up yet. She glances towards Sango who is sleeping curled up with Kirara. Than she looks at Inuyasha, who is up in a tree, looking up at the stars.

'What am I going to do?' She thinks back to a week ago, when everything seemed to get really confusing. After she kissed Inuyasha for the first time, she noticed Sango storming off. She had felt something in the pit of her stomach, and it wasn't good.

Flashback:

At the sound of Sango leaving, Kagome pulled away from Inuyasha's lips and turned to see her friend walking away. "Wait, Sango!" She jumps up to chase after her friend, leaving Inuyasha dumbfounded.

She finally met up with Sango by the hotspring where they had shared their first kiss earlier that night. "Sango!" She grabbed Sango by the arm and turned her around to face her. She gasped when she was met with not an angry expression, but a sad one. Sango had tears running down her face and she immediately looked away from Kagome's gaze.

"Go away, Kagome. I know you love Inuyasha. You have loved him for a long time. If that's what you want, I understand."

Kagome turned Sango's face toward her to look into her eyes. "I'm sorry, Sango. I'm just so confused right now. I want to explore what you and I share but.."

Sango interrupted her, "but you can't, now that you see how Inuyasha feels."

Kagome looked down at her feet, face red, heart beating faster. She looked back up into Sango's eyes and grabbed her hand. "I want to see where this goes."

Sango's face turned red with anger. "Don't you get it? That can't happen! Not as long as you still feel that way for Inuyasha! Now pretend what happened between us never happened and go away." Sango pulled her hand away from Kagome's and watched as a tear escaped Kagome's eyes. Kagome walked away defeated.

End of Flashback

A tear threatened to escape so she shut her eyes hard to try and prevent the inevitable.

At the scent of tears, Kagome's tears, Inuyasha jumped from his spot in the tree and landed directly in front of Kagome. "What's wrong?"

She looks up to see the half demon Inuyasha standing in front of her. "Nothing, Inuyasha." She looks away from his gaze.

He crouches down in front of her and turns her to look back at him. Ever since their kiss, things have been different. She has barely spoken to him and he noticed she barely spoke to Sango too. He didn't understand why. "Why are you crying?"

"I just..." She glanced towards Sango and that allowed more tears to flow. "It's just.. I miss Sango. We were so close and than we..." She almost admitted what actually happened between them, but she stopped before she did. "Oh, Inuyasha. I don't know what to do." She let her tears flow freely and she buried her face into his chest.

Inuyasha doesn't really know how to handle this situation so he just awkwardly sits there. "W-what exactly happened between you and Sango, Kagome?"

Kagome pulled away from Inuyasha and looked back into his amber orbs. "We just.. had a fight. That's all."

Inuyasha lightly moves some of her hair to behind her ear. They stare into the eyes of the other for a minute before Inuyasha starts to close the gap.

Sango wakes up from her spot with Kirara and looks over to Kagome. She notices her and Inuyasha in a private moment and this makes her feel hopeless. She continues to listen and watch.

Inuyasha starts to get closer to Kagome's lips for the second time. Kagome's eyes widened, not knowing what she should do. Everything is so confusing and she wants nothing more than to be happy with the person she loves, but who is that? She thinks about what she said to Sango just a week before, "I want to explore what you and I share... I want to see where this goes.."

Sango's eyes widened as she sees Inuyasha start to lean in towards Kagome. She puts a hand to her chest and a tear starts to escape. She closes her eyes but than something made her open them back up. The sound of Kagome's voice.

Kagome put her hand to Inuyasha's chest and said, "wait. I- I can't do this." Inuyasha's eyes widened. Sango's did too.

"K-Kagome.. I.. I thought.."

"I'm Sorry, Inuyasha. I thought that that's what I wanted. For a long time now, I wanted nothing more than to be with you. But something in me changed. I can't do this, if I can't stop thinking about someone else."

Sango gasped. She put a hand over her mouth as if to stop her breathing so they didn't hear that she was awake.

Inuyasha's eyes widened further. "S-someone else? Who? Is it that mangy wolf!?" He growls deep in his throat.

"No. It's - It's.." She lowers to almost a whisper but Inuyasha could still hear. "It's Sango." She looks back up into his surprised eyes and got more confident in her answer. She said louder this time so even Sango heard her, "I think I'm.. in love with Sango."

Inuyasha stayed silent. He had no idea how to respond to that, but deep in his heart, he knew. He saw all the signs, but he didn't want to believe them.

Sango closed her eyes to pretend she is sleeping. But deep down, she is ecstatic. Kagome just stopped Inuyasha from kissing her and than said she is in love with her.

"I'm sorry, Inuyasha. I just can't do this right now. I'm going to go home for a few days anyway, so i might as well leave now." She looks up at the sky and notices the sun start to come up. She gets up, packs her bag, and starts to head toward the well.

The sound of Kagome packing up had woken up the rest of her friends. "What are you doing, Kagome?" Shippo asked as he rubbed his eyes from sleep.

"I'm going home for a few days. I'll be back soon." She shuffles his hair and continues to walk towards the well.

"We will accompany you." Miroku said.

Sango sat up in her sleeping bag and looked at Kagome, who glanced at Sango then looked away from her stare. Without speaking, her friends decided to follow her to the well, including Sango.

When they made it to the well, Kagome took a deep breath in and turned to say good bye to her friends. Miroku said his goodbyes, along with Shippo and Kirara.

Inuyasha gave her a look as if to say, 'please don't go.' But instead he just said, "Don't be gone too long, we need to continue our search for shards." Kagome's heart sunk at that. She turned to Sango who was just standing there, silent.

"Well, I'm off." She turns to jump into the well but a hand on her arm stopped her. It was Sango. Kagome turned around to meet Sango's gaze.

Without a word, Sango pulled Kagome into a fierce hug. They just stood there in silence for several minutes. It was as if they were the only two people left on earth. The rest of their friends glanced back and forth to each other. Inuyasha looking away from them as their hug deepens.

Sango finally spoke up, "I'll miss you, Kagome."

Kagome hugged Sango tighter, her face in the crook of Sango's neck. "I'll miss you too."

Than they seperated slowly, their hands touching for just a second. Kagome smiled back at her friends, gave one last look to both Inuyasha and Sango, and than jumped back into the well to be engulfed by a tingling blue hue.

When she made it to the other side of the well, she took a minute to think about all that had happened in the last two weeks. The first time her and Sango almost kissed underneath the Gonshinboku, then a week after when they were in the hotspring and had a very intense make out session. Than not even an hour after that, the intense game of truth or dare when she was dared to kiss Inuyasha and he ended up kissing her first. A week after that, Inuyasha tried to kiss her again and she actually decided to push him away. That was the first time she said she might be in love with Sango.

'I'm in love with Sango?' She thought to herself. 'What about Inuyasha? Do I really love Sango more than Inuyasha? I'm still so confused.'

She climbed out of the well and was immediately greeted by her younger brother, Sota who was only in there to retrieve their cat, Boyo. "Hey sis! You're back! Mom is making breakfast." Kagome nodded her head in understanding and they both left the well house to head inside.

The breakfast table was quiet. Kagome was moving her food around on her plate deep in thought.

"Kagome, you know you shouldn't play with your food." Gramps scolded.

Kagome just rolled her eyes and started eating. Than she realized it was getting late. "Oh! What day is it? I gotta get to school!" She jumped up to head to her room to get ready but the sound of her mother's voice stopped her.

"It's Sunday, dear. No school today." Her mother told her.

Kagome had a sigh of relief and sat back down to finish her breakfast.

As her mother was cleaning up the dishes, Kagome and Sota were in the living room watching TV and gramps was outside working. There was a knock at the door and Kagome's mother yelled from the kitchen, "could one of you kids get that?" Sota jumped up and ran to the door. When he opened it, Kagome's three friends, Yuka, Eri, and Ayumi were standing there.

"Kagome! It's for you!" Sota yelled towards the living room.

The three friends walked into the doorway as Kagome came towards them. "Hey, Kagome! It's been a while, how are you feeling?" Eri asked her.

Kagome put on a fake smile and said she was doing just fine. Her friends could tell something was wrong. They decided to go up to her room but Kagome shot Sota a devilish look as if to warn him not to evesdrop.

When they made it to her room, Kagome shut and locked the door before going to sit on her bed. The three girls all sat on the bed with her. "Spill. What's going on with you? Is there a problem in your love life?" Yuka asked.

Kagome sighed. Nothing seems to get passed her friends anymore. At least when it has to do with her love life. She sighed again.

"I knew it!" Her friend exclaimed. Eri, Ayumi and Kagome all shot Yuka a look. Yuka than said, "I mean.. what's wrong?"

Kagome began to tell her friends everything. She told them about the first time Sango and her almost kissed. She told them about when her and Sango did kiss, but left out certain details about them being naked in a hotspring. She told them about the friendly game of truth or dare which caused her and Inuyasha to share a very intimate moment as well. She even told them how she pushed Inuyasha away when he tried to kiss her again and that she exclaimed her love for Sango to him! Than how Sango gave her that very intimate hug good-bye as she left to go home. She explained that they live very far away and she was just visiting for a short while.

After the very detailed, but not too detailed, explanation, She looked at her friends who were sitting there, mouths agape, staring blankly at Kagome.

Kagome's face turned a bright red, like the burning sun, as she started to speak again, "so.. umm.. yeah. That's what happened."

After a few seconds of silence, Eri spoke up first. "Well, that's definitely a lot. So, you're in love with Sango? What does that mean for you and Inuyasha?"

Kagome looked down at her bed. "I really don't know. I'm more confused now, than ever. I have loved Inuyasha for so long now and he finally wants to be with me. But, my feelings for Sango have grown so strong, that I think about her more than I even think about Inuyasha." She barries her face in the palm of her hands.

Ayumi puts a friendly hand on Kagome's back and rubs in soothing circles. "It's okay, Kagome. You can talk to us. Why don't we help you figure out who you want to be with more?"

Kagome looked back at her friends and smiled. She thought to herself, 'I have some thoughtful friends.' She nodded and they continued talking about Kagome's problems with love.

They start to ask Kagome individual questions to see who Kagome loves more. Yuka asks, "who do you find yourself glancing at more often?"

Kagome thinks for a moment, "well, it used to be Inuyasha. But recently, I have been glancing towards Sango more and more."

Her friends all pulled out notebooks and started writing. "What are you guys doing?" Kagome asked.

"Writing down your answers." Ayumi responded. Than she asked a follow-up question. "Who makes you upset more often?"

Kagome rolled her eyes, not understanding what the point in these questions are, but she answers anyway. "Well that's easy. Inuyasha is so obnoxious. He's always complaining and mostly it's about me. He just makes me so angry sometimes. Sango has never really made me mad, just sad when she told me to go away after I kissed Inuyasha." Kagome frowned at the thought.

The three friends continue writing, than Eri asked the next question. "Who do you love more?" The three girls just stare at Eri for a few seconds, blankly.

Kagome responds, "If I knew that, then we wouldn't be having this conversation." They roll their eyes at Eri and Eri decides to ask something different.

"How do you imagine your life going with each of them?" Eri asked.

Kagome had to think hard about the answer to this question. She never thought about it before. After a moment, she spoke. "I guess, with Inuyasha, I see us moving slowly. But fighting all the time. I see us eventually, maybe after a couple years, getting married and having a child." She thinks about how her child would be part demon. She smiles at the thought. "I think about us living a very active life and not really have any time to relax. But also, a lot of fun." She smiles even wider. "But I also know we don't get along all the time, and that might cause issues." This thought makes her smile waiver.

Than she talks about Sango. "With Sango, I think about sparks flying. I think our relationship moves fast and is very exciting. I think that we would decide to get married fairly quickly than maybe adopt a child." She thinks about how Shippo is just an orphan and her and Sango would be perfect role models for him. She smiles as she continues. "I think that even though the relationship may go fast, it would still be perfect. Very little arguments, and a quiet life in a small house somewhere secluded." She thinks about living in a little hut somewhere in the feudal era. She looks back at her friends who finished writing down their detailed notes.

Yuka responds first, "I think you should be with Sango." She looks over her notes one more time and nods back to show she is firm in that opinion.

Ayumi is next and says after looking at her own notes, "I think you should choose Inuyasha."

Eri smiles and says, "I think you should follow your heart. I know you will choose whoever is right." She then thinks to herself, 'but I know it should be Sango.'

Kagome sighs and looks at her three smiling friends. She thinks to herself about the whole conversation. 'Inuyasha and I fight all the time. Sango and I get along so great. Inuyasha and I would make such beautiful babies, but me and Sango could live happily in a small hut somewhere.' She than thinks about the kiss between her and Sango and between her and Inuyasha. The sparks that flew, the way it made her feel, how nervous she was, how she was on cloud nine. Than she smiles as she realized who she wanted to be with. At least, who she wants to explore these feelings with.

She tells her friends her decision and they are so happy for their friend. The three of them come up with a plan for how Kagome is going to tell the person of her dreams the truth.
