Chapter 17
Nia opened her eyes and quickly explained to Kara what was going on. Grabbing her phone, the blonde set it to record. Nia called out to J'onn and soon Marie's lips were moving, relaying the language that they could not decipher.
Both women were surprised at the length of the message about two minutes worth. J'onn returned to his own mind once the message seemed to be complete. He was already frowning before they could talk.
"You think the computer could figure this out?" Kara asked.
"Certainly. If Google can translate, I'm sure Brainy programmed something better into his machine. Someone does need to stay with Marie though. No telling when she'll snap awake. She shouldn't be left alone," J'onn told her.
"I'll stay. You guys go in case you need to call Diana. For all we know, she's speaking in Amazon code," Nia said.
"We won't be long," Kara promised her. The two headed for the elevator and got in. The blonde could tell that something was bothering J'onn. He hadn't voiced what it was and that was unusual. He rarely kept things to himself, especially since they were in the middle of a case.
"Penny for your thoughts Papa Bear," she said as they exited the elevator.
"Your cousin once called me the most powerful being on this planet. Yet somehow, I cannot penetrate this hypnosis. It worries me that there is an aspect that we're missing," he admitted as they sat down at the computer. Kara nodded and plugged her phone into the unit. The Martian retrieved the audio file off of it, leaving a copy on the phone in case they needed to send it to someone, before telling her that she could detach the mobile device. J'onn then searched the server to find the program he wanted and then opened the audio file in it.
"How long will this take?" Kara asked.
"I don't know. It has to figure out what language it is and then translate it," he shrugged. Brainy had programmed it so he had all known active languages from Earth and then alien languages as well. It regrettably did not take the supercomputer long to figure out they weren't dealing with any of those and squawked,
"Language Not Found!"
"There is only one I can think it would be," Kara said.
"You think Marie is using an Amazon mind trick?" J'onn wondered.
"No one speaks Ancient Greek anymore. It's perfect code as there would not be a database to translate it. Of course, it's not so ancient for the Amazons," Kara winked. She quickly made a call to Diana.
"Can you send it to me?" The black-haired woman asked.
"Of course," Kara said.
"I'll send you the translation in an encrypted text," Diana promised.
"Thank you," with that the call was over. The blonde quickly sent the file to her friend. She had no doubt that it would not take her long to translate.
"What if our hypnotist isn't just using hypnotism?" J'onn suddenly asked.
"What do you mean?" Kara gave him a look.
"Well, it is not uncommon for someone who is hypnotized to be able to perform parlor tricks, you know like clucking like a chicken or howling at the moon. Somehow though, these hypnotized people, walk and talk and completely change their behavior. Something so deep usually requires triggers, like 'you'll cluck like a chicken, every time someone mentions the word dinner'. What triggers could Enigma be using to convince them to do things like stand in traffic with a bomb vest on, holding a dead man switch?" J'onn raised an eyebrow.
"Ah, I gotcha. Well, the only thing I could think of would be magic. Enigma may be using both. She hypnotizes you and then uses magic to cast a spell to make you do something. Most of the hypnotized people we've bumped into are doing tasks that could get them killed. You'd have to be pretty deep under to override the innate survival instinct," Kara figured.
"It would also explain why I have trouble breaking the person out of it. Magic is one thing I've never be able to beat without help," he frowned.
"Same here. Perhaps Nia is our secret weapon," Kara smiled. Her phone buzzed and she quickly opened her phone.
"Diana finished her translation," the blonde said.
