It was a long winter. At first Kuri had been sure her magic could unpetrify people. But, very soon that dream died.
"The petrification was caused by science." Kuri confirmed after analyzing the birds for a final time. "It's a scientific reaction to some kind of stimulus…it's familiar, but I can't place it. Magic and science can work together for a cure; but the answer lies in science, Senku."
Senku nodded. "I thought as much, but thank you for confirming it."
The two of them worked in the lab, eventually making alcohol to form Nital.
The priestess continued to use her magic to keep them alive, but even magic had laws and limits.
"The law of conservation of mass, it applies to magic?" Senku asked in fascination.
"Well sure," Kuri said. "When someone conjures something out of nothing, they are summoning a real object; or, creating it from other elements. When I built the hut, I had all the elements in a stockpile."
"Interesting…it follows laws. How exciting!"
"The laws of magic can be found in the Wiccan Rede." Kuri said. "The most important law is to never use it for personal gain."
"But the house is for personal use." Taiju scratched his head, barely following the conversation.
"Yes but it provides shelter to you two." Kuri said. "Sharing allows some leeway."
"What about making magic items and stuff for yourself?" Senku asked, examining him.
"They're for you. You clearly have potential."
Senku blinked and laughed. "Me? Magic? Not even one millimeter. I'm a scientist."
"You were able to 'help it grow' right?" Kuri grinned. "And why not magic? With magic and science together; we can kick start humanity! Magic will speed up the brutal hard work. Besides…if anyone can make it work together…" She put a hand on his shoulder. "You can, Senku."
Taiju was surprised that Senku allowed it.
