Author's Note: I originally planned on doing a series of 14 shorts focusing on only Moffitt and Vanora as a Valentine's Day special, similar to Sicktember and the 25 Raids of Christmas. I compiled a few prompts, and lost motivation to do it, as I had several other projects going at one time. Long story short, SassyScot's "Valentine Vignettes" inspired me to give this idea another go, with some adjustments. It was too late to start working on 14 shorts, so I decided to drop it down to 7, and instead of focusing on Moffitt (even though he's the favorite), I opted to give the other Rats and Dietrich a share of the spotlight.
The fire in the hearth provided a warm, gentle glow in the room as Moffitt left the kitchen with two steaming cups of tea. He set both on a table, and sat next to his wife on the couch. "What frightful weather this is," he said. "It's sleeting out."
Vanora handed her husband part of the blanket she had on, then cuddled up to him. "Yes, but I have you to keep me warm."
"Me? I'm always cold." Moffitt picked up his tea. "Let me get a hot drink in my stomach and then I'll be warm enough for you to snuggle."
"Oh, you're always perfect for snuggling, especially with this on." Vanora gently tugged Moffitt's heavy knit sweater.
"You do love this sweater. That's why I wore it." Moffitt kissed Vanora's forehead. "One day, it's going to wear out, though, and I'll have to find another one. Or I'll just ask Anah to make one. She could probably replicate this one perfectly."
"Knowing her, yes." Vanora pressed slightly closer to Moffitt and rested her head on his chest. She became quiet for a while, and Moffitt didn't mind. The sound of wood popping and snapping in the fireplace and the pelting of sleet against the roof and windows created a gentle and cozy ambience.
He then noticed she didn't touch her tea. "Are you asleep, darling?" Moffitt whispered.
"No. Not yet anyway," Vanora whispered back. "Just listening to your heartbeat."
"Ah." Moffitt took a sip of his tea, then put his cup back on the table without moving Vanora too much. He put his arms around her, and nuzzled the top of her head. "I love you."
"I love you, too, Jack."
"You've taken great care of my heart over the years, and I hope I've done the same for yours."
"You have."
Moffitt gently squeezed her. "That's good to hear. No one's heart should be treated like a toy."
"Far too many people treated yours like one."
"Unfortunately. I took a risk, falling in love with you, but it was a risk that paid off." He ran his fingers through Vanora's short hair. "We celebrate eighteen years of marriage in about a month. Eighteen years, and I'm still madly in love with you."
Vanora's responses had gotten slower, and she sounded sleepier. "I'm still madly in love with you, too."
Moffitt smirked, and gave Vanora one last kiss before letting her continue falling asleep to the sound of his heartbeat uninterrupted.
