Hey everyone, here is Chapter 16 of the Spectacular Spider-man. The culmination of the gang war in Star City comes to its head as Hammerhead takes charge to show the city he means business. He'll show them true terror and it'll be up to Spider-man and his allies to stop him. Among them is an uneasy alliance with Prowler. Can they really stop Hammerhead together if that is a goal they share. One thing for sure, Star City's criminal underworld won't be the same. Enjoy!
The Spectacular Spider-man: The City that Never Sleeps Part 3
February 2015: Star City
The gang war in Star City was reaching its ultimate end, at least those in the know knew that. To others it seemed like it just reached a new chapter with Hammerhead making a video message that was sent out to all the criminals in the city. He had made a brazen offensive move and captured the head of the Chinese Triads, the Russian Bratva and the four heads of the five Maggia crime families of the Costa's, Libris's, Cicero's, and Karnelli's. For the Manfredi's he had captured one of their high up lieutenants. Normally, that alone would have made a powerful statement as the fact that Hammerhead had captured the leaders of his opposition and the traitors in his own was noteworthy enough, but he decided to take it a step further. He executed one Luigi Fernando Costa, head of the Costa Maggia family who had been secretly turned against Hammerhead to work for the power player behind the Stoke's family rise to power. And his execution was rather shocking as he didn't use a gun or stab the guy but beat him to death by headbutting. Hammerhead wasn't named because he was bull-headed, or he liked sharks but because he had some kind of metal plate on his forehead and with it, he beat Luigi Costa's face in followed by a public declaration of open warfare on Star City plus issuing a personal threat to Prowler. Hammerhead wanted to take over and he was going to make Star City fear his name. Well, it sort of worked.
The video message was sent out throughout the Triad and Bratva followers and in a surprising turn both groups ended up pulling back to their territories, seemingly to regroup for an offensive. While those two had pulled back, the Stokes kept secure of their territory and some of the Maggia had switched sides to join the triple alliance, still a stupid name, working with the Stokes, Bratva, and Triads for whatever mystery power broker was funding them. This Wesley and Fatman guy the Bratva thug confessed to Spider-man during an interrogation. That left Hammerhead with half his usual forces but the ones that remained were the most fanatical, diehard, and extremely loyal, which made them even deadlier. Despite their best efforts, word was quickly spreading about the turn in the war with the FBI doing their part. The lead FBI agent held a press conference to assure the city that they would handle this, but no one believed that. They were already late to the gang war, so it was just them trying to save face. They were no closer to solving this than when they arrived. To those in the know, Spider-man and Team Arrow were Star City's best bet in this war ending so Captain Lance and the SCPD did what they could to help which meant going out in force and support Spider-man. He could use all the help he could get because he had his hands full.
[Loud explosion]
An RPG rocket blew up a car as a firefight between about a dozen of Hammerhead's Maggia and an equal number of a mix-mash group of the Triple Alliance plus the turncoat Maggia was underway in a parking lot. Civilians ran away in fright as both sides unloaded bullets at the other. A confrontation that seemed to start as Hammerhead's Maggia had arrived to kick out the Stoke's control over this area. Both sides were heavily armed, hence the RPG. The SCPD had arrived moments ago and were engaged with both sides making this a three-way firefight and caught in the middle, per usual was Spider-man.
He web zipped through the air and turned into a spin, shooting several globs of impact webbing as he did. "Where the hell do you guys get these things? What? Is there some kind of criminal market where you get your guns? Like seriously? A rocket launcher?" He asked, landing in a roll which he then moved into a butterfly spin, landing a kick to the head of one of Hammerhead's guys. He webbed him in the chest and pulled him in closer before attaching a web grenade to his chest. One drop kick later knocked him into some others and the web grenade ensnared them all. "What's next? Tanks? Wait, I probably just jinxed myself."
He backflipped into the air and slingshot himself into one of the Stoke's soldiers, using him as a surfboard as he slid on the ground before jumping back up into the air. He pulled his right arm back and charged it with a venom strike before he web pulled himself back to the ground. He did a superhero landing but punched with his venom strike, causing the venom strike to disperse out around him in a 15-yard perimeter. All the gang enforcers in that perimeter were zapped with his venom strike bio-electricity, their bodies seized up like they were each hit with two high-powered tasers. Painful was a pleasant way to describe what they were feeling. With them temporarily disabled, Spider-man shot several splitter webs and snagged them before spinning around like a top and sending them flying through the air.
Two officers ducked back down behind their car as one of the gang enforcers was thrown over their heads. "Sorry! That's my fault!" Spider-man shouted to them as he backflipped onto an enemy's shoulders and then took him to the ground with a headscissors throw. He knocked him out with a punch to the face before webbing his body and hurling it at a group like a bowling bowl. And like a bowling ball it knocked them over and he tied them up with some webbing. "Oh, yeah! Strike!"
"Die, bug!" The Hammerhead goon with the RPG was the last one standing. He had reloaded and took aim before firing the rocket. Thinking quickly, Spider-man leapt into the air as the rocket sailed below him but then fired a web at it and quickly hurled it up where it exploded harmlessly and injured no one.
"Ha! I can't believe that worked! Uh, I mean, of course it would work." Spider-man rolled forward in the air, pulling in his limbs like he was a cannonball and hit the rocket launcher goon with a double kick to the face. With him knocked out Spider-man picked up the RPG tube and broke it over his knee. "Good riddance. You guys, ok?"
The police stepped out from cars with their guns ready but seeing how all the criminals were knocked out or tied up, they relaxed a bit. Some of the officers immediately began to round up and secure their new prisoners along with the weapons they had. Packing extra handcuffs and zip-ties for situations like this, the lead officer walked over to Spider-man. "We're fine. Thank you, Spider-man."
"No thanks necessary. Just doing my job." He replied. "Though I hate to say it that things are getting out of hand."
"Yeah, Hammerhead's gone crazy. The Mayor and commissioner are seriously getting worried." The officer told him when he realized what he said. "I probably shouldn't have told you that."
"I'll pretend you didn't say it. I take it Captain Lance is under some serious stress. I know it's probably pointless to ask since they came in late and haven't been at all helpful, but any chance the FBI have actually done anything and arrested Hammerhead without me knowing?" Spider-man wondered and got a head shake in response. "Yeah, I figured. All right, well since you're gonna report in to Captain Lance, tell him that I'm closing in on a lead that could end this war quickly."
"Will do. Be careful."
"Thanks. You, too." Spider-man fired a web and zipped away while the police dealt with their new influx of prisoners. He checked his HUD and saw that his web shooters were getting low, so he web zipped to the roof of a building and reloaded both web shooters but upon checking his belt and seeing he was down to a few cartridges he decided to head to Team Arrow's bunker to restock. It was closer to his current location than Palmer Technologies or his dorm room and he left some of his gear there.
A short web swing through the city and he arrived in the alley behind the club. Inputting the code on the keypad and once the door was unlocked, he entered the bunker to see Felicity at the computer working with Diggle. "Hey, are you ok?" She asked in worry.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Add on another confrontation I dealt with in this gang war and several more criminals in jail. Was running low on web fluid so I came to restock. Not sure what we're gonna face so I thought better to be safe than sorry." He pulled off his mask to get some fresh air on his face as he walked over to his mannequin suit display case. On said case were shelves holding his web gadgets along with vials of extra web fluid and the high-tech STAR labs case they used to be in. When he returned from Central City, he left one of the cases in the bunker in the case he ever needed to resupply like in this instance. "What's the situation going on in the city?"
"Same as before but a lot more scared people. News of Hammerhead's video execution has spilled out. City's in a panic and people are scared." Diggle told him.
"Honestly, I would be too. Hammerhead is relentless." Felicity remarked as Will finished refilling his belt with extra web cartridges and web gadgets.
"Yup. I've never actually met the guy, but he seems like a special kind of crazy." Will quipped. "But we're one step closer to stopping him and ending this war. Was Prowler's intel any good?"
"Yeah. Granted a private shipping yard in Star City wasn't a lot to go on but now that we know the last remaining drive is in the hands of the Libris family it helped narrow things down." Felicity brought up some security camera footage and satellite images of a very large shipping yard. The size of the area and its prime location meant it likely brought in millions of dollars of legal business for shipping and transport but with it being under the control of one of the Maggia families that number had to be higher. With the five heads of the Maggia having turned sides to work for the power broker behind the thefts of the other four, Hammerhead had beaten the location of the drive out of the Libris family head and found its location. Once he did, he secured it like a fortress and secured it was. Footage and images showed the shipping yard was now turned into an armed compound complete with a small army. Snipers were set up all around the main building and scattered throughout the stacks of cargo containers, each of whom had someone covering the blind spots in their sectors. Aside from the snipers, there were more men armed with assault rifles and a few even had some thermite rifles, likely stolen from Brick's crew prior to their downfall. In total, at least 100 armed men.
"Wel…that complicates things. Guess Hammerhead's not as thickheaded as I thought. Get it? Thickheaded…" Will trailed off when he saw the looks, he was getting from Felicity and Diggle. "Well, [clears throat] that's gonna make taking the place harder but not impossible. Haven't met a gun yet I can't dodge."
"Yeah, but it seems like we're pressing our luck with that." Felicity pointed out.
"I can handle it, Felicity. What matters is getting that drive and ending this war as quickly as possible. Hammerhead can't have many men left now with the five Maggia families going to work for this Wesley and Fatman powerbroker duo so there's a good chance he put more of his men on that shipping yard to protect the drive. Once we take them down and the drive, he'll be on his last leg." Will theorized.
"And in doing so we kind of win the war for the other side? Don't we?" Felicity asked.
"One problem at a time. We can't keep fighting a war on both sides. We take out Hammerhead first then we can prioritize on the others." Diggle told her.
"Diggle's right. And hopefully with Prowler working with us we can figure out exactly who this Wesley and Fatman are." Will said. "Did the tracking data give you anything concrete?"
"Maybe." Felicity brought up the tracking data from the spider-tracer Will had slipped on to Prowler during their last meeting, when Prowler agreed to work with him. Just because he pleaded and hoped for Prowler to do the right thing didn't mean he was naive to think he wouldn't betray him. The tracking data showed what happened after their meeting. Prowler moved through the city and headed to an alleyway in the Glades, stopping for about a minute before heading to a building several blocks away and he seemed to stay there. "That's the only place he went to after your confrontation with him. I checked and it's the apartment building where he and his mother live.
"What do you think?" Diggle wondered and Will thought it over.
"I think Hobie Brown is just a misguided kid with a lot of anger who's been used as the pawn of somebody else." Will answered but they could tell there was more. "That being said, and this may be Oliver rubbing off on me…I think there's something else going on. Just not sure what and we don't have the luxury of waiting around. We're gonna need all the help to get that last drive and Prowler's the only one who can tell us who he's working for and working against Hammerhead. We need him. We don't have to like it, but we've got no other choice."
"Oh, man. I hate it when that happens." Felicity said when her computer beeped with an incoming signal from Arsenal and Black Canary. "Roy, what do you have?"
"We followed up on the lead you got from that license plate."
"Wait, what license plate?" Will asked.
"The license plate you snapped a photo of when you were trying to find the flash drive in the book from the Costa's." She answered and Will remembered. "Took me a while to get the information and you were dealing with a lot, so I had Roy and Laurel look into it. It's registered to a storage company owned by the Costa Maggia family. Technically now, under control of the power broker they're working for."
"Ah, understood. Sorry. Go ahead, Roy." Will said into the speaker.
"We're perched up on the roof of a building. Got a clean view of their only storage location. Not exactly the most secure place but definitely a lot of activity. Several Maggia goons standing security and from the looks of it in the past few minutes we've seen some Triads and members of the Stokes crew arrive." Roy said.
"Place doesn't exactly look like it's ready for a gang war. More like it's back in business." Laurel added.
"Could be a front for something. And with the Maggia families joining the power broker, could be they're working out some new business while the others keep Hammerhead busy." Diggle suggested.
"Then it could be our lead on finding out more about this organization. Roy, Laurel. Keep your distance. I'm on my way there now and then we'll do recon." Will told them before putting his mask back on. "Felicity, send the information to Captain Lance and Yuri. Could be something we could use there."
"On it. Be careful." She told him and Will nodded. He exited the bunker and web swung away to meet Arsenal and Black Canary.
A few moments later…
Arsenal and Black Canary were positioned on the roof of a building a block away from the storage facility belonging to the Costa Maggia family but now belonged to the collective working for their mysterious power broker working against Hammerhead. It must have been one of the Costa family's fronts they started up since the original arrests years ago. Could be what allowed them to stay in the game for as long as they have but now that they were working with the power broker, they must have new plans because the place was pretty busy considering the gang war going on. And with Hammerhead going scorched earth, then this place had to have some importance. Arsenal was using some mini-binoculars to observe the area while Black Canary was using a mini-camera to take photos and evidence.
[Thwip-Thwip]
They turned their heads and saw Spider-man swing up and land on the roof before walking over to join them. "Sorry, I'm late. Anything?"
"Whatever this place is, it's been busy." Arsenal said as Spider-man crouched down next to him and Black Canary. He focused his gaze on the storage facility/area and his HUD zoomed in, highlighting the men standing around as security, the cars and trucks that were parked all around, and crates/boxes of contraband. "A truck came by and dropped stuff off before leaving with a few cars as escorts. A lot of movement down there and not just Maggia. Some Triads and Bratva men are down there as well. The Stokes crew left a while ago."
"A weird place for the Triads to be especially with their leader held captive by Hammerhead." Black Canary pointed out.
"Yuri told me once that criminal organizations are a lot like stacks of dominoes. You can take out most of them but there will still be a few left to stick around. The Triads must have elected a new leader or someone else stepped up and they're more than happy to work with the Bratva, Stokes, and this new power broker." Spider-man theorized. "We'll see how long that relationship stands to last but for now let's use this opportunity to get some intel on our new competition."
"Place is locked down pretty tight. Sneaking is not going to be easy." Arsenal told him.
"Lucky for us, STAR labs has helped with that." Spider-man reached into his belt and pulled out one of his Spider-bots. He fired a web line across the street and piloted the Spider-bot to crawl across the line. "God these things are amazing. I've only had them for a short time but now I can't imagine being Spider-man without them."
"I imagine things would be a lot harder without them." Black Canary pointed out.
"Very much so." Spider-man answered. "We should introduce you to them, Laurel. You could meet Flash and the others and get a proper superhero suit."
"What's wrong with my suit?" She asked him.
Spider-man looked at her and stammered to find an answer before turning to look at Arsenal. "I didn't say anything. This is all you."
"What's wrong with my suit?" She asked him again.
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong with your suit, especially for your first one. You're doing a lot better than I did. Mine was just a ripped-up hoodie and sweats with a pair of goggles over my eyes but I didn't really feel like a superhero until I got my first real suit from my friends. And even then, when I got the suit from STAR labs I couldn't go back. I'm spoiled. Custom fitted, additional protection and gadgets? STAR labs has helped out Oliver and Roy so it's only fair you should get an upgrade too. Maybe something that makes it quicker to change or smaller, so you don't have to lug a bag with you everywhere you go?" He suggested.
"Not that this episode of superhero fashion show isn't riveting but do you think we can focus on the criminal enterprise we stumbled onto? Your Spider-bot made it across." Felicity told him.
"Right. Got it." Spider-man used his HUD to control his Spider-bot and guide it down from an electrical pole. It's size made it harder to see and the men on security were more focused on looking out for cops or heroes and not a spider robot. The Spider-bot crawled on the ground and over to stacks of boxes stacked all around like a mice navigating through a maze or like a game of Pacman. He had to keep the Spider-bot moving and avoid the Ghosts AKA the guards on patrol. He stopped the Spider-Bot in between some boxes and focused its camera on what he saw in the corner. Stacks of money but not real money. They were sheets of counterfeit bills and with the paper cutter there they were likely being cut and then organized into bricks of cash like the real ones. "Hello. Sheets of counterfeit bills. They're not wasting any time. Let's make sure we get some pictures of that."
The cameras on the Spider-bots face took several pictures before it kept moving. It caught sight of some thugs moving bricks of counterfeit bills into bags for later distribution. The Spider-bot continued moving through the hideout and saw more bags of counterfeit cash hanging around in different places but noticed a large stack of wrapped bricks of counterfeit cash with more in duffel bags.
"Wow, that is a lot of counterfeit money. Looks like our mysterious power broker is getting into the counterfeiting business." Felicity remarked. "I wonder what you could buy with all that counterfeit money."
"I'm guessing a lot of bad things." Spider-man suggested.
"Or this power broker could be looking to amass more power." Black Canary said. "If he set ups a counterfeiting network here in Star City, he could corner the market and with the other gangs in the city. Or ever set up connections outside of Star City."
"And in turn get a lot of actual money from his illegal one." Arsenal added. "With this new collaboration between the Triads, the Bratva and remains of the Maggia once Hammerhead is dealt with than we've got a serious power in the city. Against the rest of the gangs in the city, this group could be looking for more power and try to take them out."
"Or at the very least make their lives and business much more difficult." Spider-man agreed with his line of thinking. "But do you think they'd do that? Especially with everything that's been going on with their war against Hammerhead. This war has to have been affecting them in some way that risking another gang war especially after all of this is over would be risky."
"Unless they reach out to them like this broker did with the Triads and Bratva. They even turned the Maggia families against Hammerhead. They either have to be super convincing or have some serious dirt to get them to work together which could be why they're focusing on this counterfeiting operation. Get this working to get the rest of their illegal operations up and running and establish a solid foothold to begin expanding." Black Canary suggested.
"The broker's trying to do what Brick did and what Hammerhead's doing. Take Tombstone's place, become the next Big Man of Star City." Spider-man deduced. "Well, too bad for him I've made it a habit of taking out crime bosses. This Fatman, whoever he is has earned himself an ass kicking with my boot doing the kicking."
Felicity watched the feed from the Spider-bot and saw some goons talking around a laptop before one of them got a call on his cellphone, so they walked away to a nearby office trailer. "And I think I know where we can get some more information. That laptop could give us some useful intel on this counterfeiting operation." Felicity suggested.
"Nice catch. I'm on it." Spider-man piloted the Spider-bot over to the laptop. It crawled up the crate the laptop was on and when it got to the device it turned around, so its back was facing one of the USB ports. A USB drive then extended out of its behind and it inserted into the laptop where it quickly began downloading all the data and transferring it to Felicity back at the bunker. "Anything good?"
"Maybe. Some of this data is encrypted but not too heavily. It shouldn't take me too long." Felicity told him. Once the Spider-bot was done downloading and transferring all the data, it scurried away.
"All right. In the meantime, I shall keep myself occupied with some good old goon stomping." Spider-man fired a web and zipped across the street over to a lamp post near the counterfeiting operation which was set up in a large alleyway between two buildings, underneath an overpass and cordoned off by tall fences. Not exactly the most secure but with all the guards around not exactly the place someone would venture into. From his perch he saw the two guards below talking near one of the side gates. They seemed to be discussing nothing serious before one walked away to continue his patrol. The guard still below the lamp post was completely caught off guard when some webbing ensnared his arms and yanked him up. Several grunts and thuds of impact were heard, and he was knocked out, webbed up and hung upside down from the lamp post. The guard who walked away heard some weird sounds, so he turned around and saw his friend strung up in the air but before he could shout or go help, Spider-man dropped down and grabbed him from behind, then took him back up into the air with a web. More grunts and thuds of impacts were heard before he was strung upside down via some webbing.
Spider-man lowered himself upside down in his signature spider perch and placed a web trip mine connected to a web grenade so there was a surprise set for later. He pulled himself back up and web zipped over to the part of the area that was covered by the overpass. He crawled along the side and took note of the positions of everyone so he could plan his attack. He saw one goon walking in his general direction with a bag Big Belly Burger and a soda, likely having gotten something to eat while he's in his guard position. Once the moment was right several strands of web ensnared him and he was pulled up into the air where he was quickly taken out. His soda fell to the ground, but a web managed to snatch it before it went splat.
Spider-man pulled it back up and webbed it to the wall he webbed the goon to along with the bag of Big Belly Burger which he would enjoy once this was over. Heroes have to eat too. "Arsenal, think you can land a shot over here?" Spider-man asked him.
Arsenal judged the distance and there wasn't anything tricky to it depending on what he had to hit and what he had to shoot. "Depends. What do you need?"
"Think you can land two smoke arrows in the area to allow me to work unseen?" Spider-man wondered.
"That I think I can handle." Arsenal pulled two smoke arrows from his quiver and placed them on the drawstring of his bow before pulling back. He adjusted his aim up and a little to the right given he had to avoid the overpass but once he was sure of his shot, he was ready. "Incoming."
He fired the arrows a block away. They sailed through the air and made their arc down into the area with one landing on a crate while another hit the ground, but both made it. The thick casings near the front of the shaft spewed out a thick cloud of smoke that quickly began to engulf the area.
"What the hell? [Cough-cough]"
"What the hell is going on?!"
"Fire? Fire! Someone get the fire extinguisher!"
"Here we go. Maximum effort." Spider-man cracked his neck before jumping down and disappearing into the thick cloud of smoke.
[Whack and Thud]
"Huh? UGH!"
[Pow and Thud]
"Adam is that you—GAH!"
[Bam, whack, thud, thwip and then Thud]
"What the hell is going on?"
[Kick, punch, spin kick, uppercut, and then thud]
"Help!"
[Thwip and punch, Thwip and kick, Thwip and triple spin kick and several thuds]
"There's someone here—AH!"
[Punch, kick, thwip and thud]
"Somebody shoot something!"
[Sporadic and unwieldy automatic gunfire]
[Whack, punch, kick, spin kick, thwips and multiple thuds]
The dense cloud of smoke began to fade away to reveal Spider-man pull on some webbing which pulled up some webbed goons, so they were dangling up in the air. All around the storage area for the counterfeiting operation were knocked out goons and mobsters of the Maggia, Triads, and Bratva. Many were tied up in twos or in groups while a few were hanging upside down via webs stuck to the overpass and a few were webbed to crates or the fence with one even webbed to the door of the office trailer.
"Nicely done." Felicity praised.
"Thanks. I make kicking bad guy butt into an artform." Spider-man remarked before he walked over to the office trailer and pried the guy off the door so he could get in. He began to wake up, so he punched him across the face and webbed him to the side before walking in. There he plugged in his Spider-drive into the computers there and downloaded everything they had. The more he got the more they could learn about this broker and his work on these criminal organizations. There was still a lot they didn't know, including who this power broker was other than some guy named Wesley working with him and apparently the Bratva think he's fat. "Felicity, I'm grabbing all the data on their computers and copying them to a flash drive. Hopefully, this can give us more on their counterfeiting operation and how it ties to their other fronts."
"Good. I already sent an anonymous call to the SCPD. Captain Lance is busy in a meeting so I haven't been able to reach him, but the SCPD should be there soon and most likely the FBI a little later once they find out what's going on. You might want to make yourself scarce." Felicity told him.
"Right. Laurel, Roy, let's head back to the bunker." He told them.
"Roger that." Arsenal used a grapple arrow and lowered himself and Black Canary down to the alley near the building they were perched on where his motorcycle was parked. They got on and drove away. A couple of moments later Spider-man web zipped out of the area and perched himself up onto the overpass. He waited a few minutes until he heard SCPD sirens, and several squad cars arrived. The officers began to secure the area and when they saw the situation, they called in backup. Surprisingly, backup was able to arrive faster than he expected with a full CSI team and as Felicity predicted FBI agents arrived with them. They would likely pull some jurisdiction bullshit and take the lead.
He figured it would have taken longer for backup to arrive, so he gave a call to Yuri to get a check in and let her know what was going on.
[Dial tone-Dial tone] "Hey, Will. Heard you took down a counterfeiting operation?"
"Yeah. Got the location from a license plate off a truck when I was pursuing one of the Maggia flash drives. Took some time to crack the the location but it led to the Costa family counterfeiting operation. Pretty elaborate and has to have been up and running for a long time but clearly, it's being put through its paces for this new power broker. Some Triad and Bratva were here too." He told her. "You'd think they'd be more worried about Hammerhead though."
"Whoever is in charge is getting business back up and running. He knows Hammerhead is on his last legs as does everyone. We haven't heard a peep from him or any of his men. His stunt sure enough earned him some fear points but without the capital and muscle to back it up, Hammerhead's put himself in the corner. The FBI's onto him and he's got only the most loyal or frightened working for him now, so his options are limited. He can't go out there terrorizing people any more when he doesn't have the men or money to waste."
"Really? Because earlier I stopped some of his men in a little dustup with some Triple Alliance goons. They used rocket launchers of all things. Seems to me like he may not be as smart as you think he is." He pointed out.
"Fair enough but since then he's been keeping quiet. No new attacks or even car bombs. He's either got to be planning something or protecting something."
"Actually, I think it could be the latter. I completely forgot to tell you, but I think I have an in on how to get the final drive before the power broker's men do. The Libris family are the only ones with a drive not yet in the hands of this Fatman. And Hammerhead's taking some serious precautions on making sure it stays with him." Spider-man used his HUD and sent over the information Felicity had on the private shipping yard where the last drive was. Including the images and satellite stills of the place being turned into a fortress thanks to Hammerhead fortifying it.
"Wow, ok. That could explain why things have been quiet. How'd you get this intel?"
"Prowler. I managed to track him down when he went after the fourth drive. His real name is Hobart Brown. Starling City Community College student. Guy with a lot of misplaced anger and misguided intentions." He started to explain everything that happened when he managed to catch Prowler. His unmasking, their talking which was interrupted by some Triads trying to steal the drive and then witnessing Hammerhead's murder vlog. After that Prowler promised to help them deal with this entire mess and stop the broker from getting the last drive. "Prowler said he'd help us after he handled some things at home. I dinged him with a tracer and the second he heads to the shipping yard I'll be there, but I wouldn't mind some backup as well."
"So, the guy who's been driving us crazy, started this entire gang war is no older than you are? What the hell?"
"I know, I know, Yuri, believe me, I get it. I gave him the riot act but with his help we can end this. And he could give us some serious intel on this power broker and be the first link in how we take him down. Hobie just made a lot of bad decisions to try and look out for his mother. The Stokes and this Wesley guy working for the Fatman took advantage of him. I'm not condoning it, but I understand. And if he helps us take down this new group than fine." He stated.
"Me too but I can't exactly ignore everything he's done. At the very least, if he's willing to cooperate and really helps us than I can talk to the DA to get him a reduced sentence, maybe probation and keep his mother safe. Provided that he really works with us. I know you want to help this guy, Will but are you sure you can trust him?"
"I'm not but it's not like we have a lot of options, Yuri. Guess we'll see. I'll give you a call when I make a move for the last drive." He said before firing a web and swinging away.
Line Break xxxxx
Elsewhere across the city, Hobie Brown was sitting in his room in the apartment he and his mom shared. He had just finished handling some stuff that he needed to handle after everything had gone to crap the last few weeks. What started out as a way for him to make some extra money to help support his mom along with some of the people in his building and neighborhood had gone downhill. It was simple, rob from rich assholes and make some money but now he inadvertently started a bloody gang war. All this time he was mad at Spider-man for the mess he caused and here he had caused just as big of a mess, if not more with the psycho like Hammerhead. Guy headbutted a man to death on camera.
He felt partially responsible for what was going on, so he was going to help Spider-man stick it to Hammerhead. He finished readying his gear and quickly suited up, slipping on his boots and all the gadgets he could fit into the pouches on his belt before locking it into place of his black cargo pants. He slipped on his purple sweatshirt that had his bulletproof vest stitched into it over a tight-fitting athletic shirt before putting on his gauntlets. Once they were on, he grabbed his helmet and walked over to the window of his room but stopped when he remembered something. He walked back to his desk and retrieved a spider-themed tracking bug and placed it back on his arm. He slipped on his helmet and jumped out his window, firing his grapple line across the street and began running on the rooftops towards the docks.
With Will…
Will was with Team Arrow in the bunker regrouping after they took down the counterfeiting operation. Partially to resupply and also see what information they had. Will had copied a lot of information so it was going to take time to go through it all, even with Felicity's genius computer skills. Will was standing next to her at her desk with his mask off while Roy and Laurel were off to the side, resting and refitting their fear. All he saw on the screens were lines of code and while he wasn't on Felicity's level of computer hacking, he knew enough.
"Man, this is some Grade-A level encryption." He stated.
"More like A++, PHD-level computer encryption if we're going with that metaphor. Some of the best I've seen. Even with my skills and equipment it's gonna take some time to get through these layers of defense." Felicity admitted.
"Guess that explains how the Libris family has managed to keep this all under wraps for so long." Laurel remarked.
"Actually, a lot of these digital firewalls and such are recent. Only the last few days." Felicity corrected her.
"About the same timeframe as Hammerhead's gang war and when they switched sides." Roy pointed out.
"The Fatman." Will deduced.
"Are we really going to call him that?" Dig wondered.
"Unless we get a name on him, I'm sticking with Fatman." Will quipped. "Clearly, this guy runs a tight ship and has some really smart people working for him. This guy's like Tombstone 2.0 but unlucky for him we know he's around so no hiding away for us Fatman."
"Well, while I'm still working on all the data you got from those computers, I was able to get started on what your Spider-bot picked up from the laptop it found. I'm still working on some bits, but I got through the firewalls to know what was on it. It's mostly shipping manifests that go back months before this gang war so clearly this place has been around for a long time. The manifests were likely how they were able to keep track of the money they were shipping and getting back. The shipping company is a local one in Star City and no surprise it's a front for the Maggia, but this one is owned by the Libris family. Guess the Costa's were the money and the Libris moved it." Felicity informed them.
"Seems like a smart thing they'd do. Work with another family and keep the peace and money flowing." Laurel pointed out.
"Honor among thieves as if there's anything like that but here's something. Something the Costa family earmarked as important. Something that came in to the Libris shipping yard." Felicity told them.
"Really, what'd they ship?" Roy wondered.
"A vault. An impenetrable vault by the looks of it. The kind that was built with the help of former thieves and the same kind used in the best museums and government buildings. The kind with redundant systems and pretty much no way of getting into unless you have the key or you're a master thief with several hours of alone time. Now the vault itself is unusual but here's the thing the Costa family noticed. It never left the shipping yard. From what they can tell, it's been there since they ordered it years ago." Felicity said before looking at Will. "And the location of that shipping yard happens to be the same place I showed you earlier."
"The place that was locked down like the Federal Reserve and where Hammerhead sent most of his men." Will deduced.
"Could be where they stashed their drive? Hammerhead found out and is just locking the location down." Laurel suggested.
"If I had a flash drive connected to the accumulated wealth of my criminal organization, placing it in an impenetrable vault seems like a good idea." Will pointed out. "All right, that least narrows things down from the entirety of a private shipping yard being protected like its Fort Knox to finding a vault. But then again, it's an impenetrable vault inside a shipping yard which still has plenty of places for it to be hidden."
"You're not really painting a great picture." Diggle pointed out.
"Well, we know more than we did when this started and hopefully with the information, we get from the counterfeiting operation it'll be more. We're moving in the right direction as far as I'm concerned. What we need to do now is get that drive." Will stated.
"So, what are we waiting for?" Roy asked when their computers beeped. Felicity checked and saw it was Will's spider-tracer on the move which meant Prowler was on the move and he was heading straight for the Libris shipping yard.
"That." Will pointed at the computers. "Prowler's on the move which means so am I. Diggle, think you can provide sniper support?"
"On it." Diggle walked over to the far shelf and grabbed the case holding the sniper rifle.
"Where do you want us?" Laurel asked.
"With Diggle as backup." Will told them, slipping his mask on, and putting some extra web gadgets into his belt. "It's best I handle this one solo with Prowler."
"Whoa, Will are you sure that's such a good idea? I know you want to give him the benefit of the doubt and I applaud you for that. Really, I do but going in just with him seems kind of risky." Felicity warned him.
"She's right. You don't know if Prowler could try and turn on you." Roy added.
"I get that, but this is not about me trusting Prowler, this is about me knowing that out of all of us, I'm the only one who can handle entering that place. Out of everyone here I'm the only one with the bulletproof suit created by STAR labs and who regularly dodges bullets with ease. And despite the fact that I've been at this hero thing not as long as you guys have, I've dealt with situations like this more often. The whole secured areas filled with goons with guns. I can handle it, but I can't do that if I'm worried either one of you is gonna catch a stray bullet." Will said to Roy and Laurel.
"You're starting to sound like Oliver." Laurel warned him.
"Sorry guys but in this case, I'm serious. These guards are on high alert, so they won't hesitate to shoot something first and ask questions later. Sure, taking down Brick was a similar situation, but Diggle and I handled the guards and snipers all over that place before you guys could move in. I don't see how this instance should be any different." Will pointed out and he made a valid point. At least enough that the others agreed with him. Will was the only one there with powers and while he may not have been at this hero thing as long as Oliver, he was quickly gaining more experience than the others. The only exception was likely Diggle since he's been with Oliver the longest and combined with his time in the army it made him more skilled than the others. Granted that experience wasn't entirely an equalizing factor when you added on Will's powers and gear. With those, Will edged over them all. An argument could be made for Oliver. "And by the way. Offended that you think I sound like Mr. Brooding. Let me know when you guys get there."
Will headed to the alley-side exit of the bunker and jumped into the air before swinging away. It took a little longer than expected to get to the shipping yard as he had to stop some crimes on the way. Two attempted purse snatchings, one attempted carjacking, and an attempted robbery at a local bodega. Minor stuff but he managed to close in on the shipping yard by the port. As he got his closer his HUD pinged as it picked up the spider-tracer he placed on Prowler. He swung up and flipped through the air before landing on the side of a tall building and used his enhanced vision to take a look around. The shipping yard was locked down like an army compound on high alert but while there were 100 or so men around before based on cameras and satellite images, now there was only ¼ of that sticking around.
He looked to the west and noticed something flickering on a rooftop, so he zoomed in with his vision and saw Prowler perched up on the roof of a building a few blocks away from the shipping yard. He seemed to be scouting out of the place, so he fired a web and headed in his direction.
Prowler was in fact scouting the shipping yard as the HUD in his helmet got him a better look at his final target and he could see that even with his skills he was really outmatched. There was no way he'd be able to get in and out without being spotted and while he was successful so far, that was solely reliant on him being unnoticed. In a straight up fight, he'd be dead and the only reason he's made it this far is by running and using distractions. He needed help with this one and as if right on time, he heard the distinct thwip sounds of webbing and turned to see Spider-man swing down onto the roof.
"I thought you'd get here sooner. I've been waiting for ten minutes." Prowler told him.
"Had some petty crimes to deal with on the way here." He answered. "What about you? Everything ok on your end? You took your time."
"Had to deal with some stuff." Prowler said, being vague on purpose but they had more important things to deal with at the moment. "I count 25 men standing guard in the shipping yard and around the warehouse they're using. And ten of them are snipers."
"Yeah, I see them. Five of them are set up at the warehouse while the rest are scattered throughout the shipping yard. But something definitely doesn't feel right."
"What do you mean?"
"I checked the area earlier today and there were over a hundred men guarding the place. And now it's down to a fraction of that number. Where'd they all go?" Spider-man wondered.
"Could be they were called away somewhere. Hammerhead does have a war to fight." Prowler reminded him.
"Maybe, but something feels wrong. Like this is a trap." Spider-man suggested.
"Well, trap or not we still need to see if that drive is there. If it's not, then we have bigger problems." Prowler pointed out and Spider-man had to agree. With a fraction of Hammerhead's men being there it could mean he moved the drive, but they needed to be sure. "Even though there are fewer men than you thought there would be we still need to be careful. If those snipers or anyone sees us, then this place goes on lockdown. And if that's not an issue the security systems on that safe will make it impossible to open without the master key."
"How do you know about the safe?" Spider-man asked him.
"Wesley. The Lipman for the power broker working with the Stokes. He said that the final drive was placed in a high-tech safe in the shipping yard. Braxton-Lindbergh Key-8 heavy duty safe with a Quantum-9 security system. Supposedly the best on the market and extremely expensive. It's got a fail-safe mechanism that, when triggered automatically seals the safe shut and sucks up all the oxygen with a special alloy encasement making it nearly impossible to break into. It's got more redundancies and backups than most computer systems do." Prowler explained. "The only way to open that safe is with a special key card, code, and palm print, provided it's even still here."
"Great. We're dealing with Cadillac of secured safes and to get what we need we need to figure out exactly where that keycard is. Why can't anything ever be easy?" Spider-man remarked.
"Will, it's me, Felicity. I think I have a workaround that could help you. I've been looking at the specs of the safe Prowler was talking about. The key card he's talking about is a special electronic key card and according to the schematics it looks like the card and the keycode are connected."
"Meaning that each keycard has its own code." Spider-man said aloud, and Prowler looked at him weird.
"Exactly. Once assigned the codes are locked to the keycards' memory. If you get the keycard, I can work my magic to get the codes. At the very least that takes care of two problems."
"Sound great but how exactly am I going to find the card in this place? It'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack." He pointed out.
"I'll try and figure out a work around."
"Who are you talking to?" Prowler asked him.
"Someone helping me." Spider-man reached into his belt and handed him a small earpiece. "So, we can stay in contact. Let's take out these guards and snipers at least. It'll make moving in easier and then we can search the place for the safe."
"All right. How do you want to do this?" Prowler asked him, putting his helmet back on after slipping the earpiece into his left ear.
"Let's move in and get a lay of the land. Stay out of sight." Spider-man fired two webs and began backing up to create tension. Once enough tension was built, he lifted his feet up and slingshot himself through the air. With a quick use of his web wings, he glided over to the shipping yard and one web zip put him up top on a container crane. He took note of the positions of all the guards and the snipers. His HUD then did a nifty trick where it calculated the sniper's line of sights based on their positions, how they held their guns, and where they were moving with faint red lines to give him a general idea. STAR labs really thought up all the bells and whistles with his tech. He saw Prowler leap through the air via his special boots before a grapple line pulled him over to a container stack. He hid behind one as there was a guard nearby. "That guard in front of you. He's hidden from view by the container. Take him down."
"On it." Prowler moved quickly and put the guard in a chokehold. He struggled for a few seconds before passing out. Prowler used some zip cuffs to tie his hands and placed his body up against the cargo container door, so he was out of sight. Spider-man climbed down the container crane and saw a sniper set up below him, so he lowered himself down slowly. Once he was close enough, he webbed the sniper from behind and pulled him up. A few thuds and punches later, he was webbed to the crane. Spider-man dropped down onto a cargo lifter and saw a guard walk by, so he webbed him and pulled him up. A guard walking in between some container stacks was about to walk out when Prowler dropped down behind him. He grabbed him from the back of the neck and his claws emitted a low-level shock that knocked him out. Prowler pulled his body out of sight and tied him up.
"Prowler, you've got a sniper on the top of stacks to your right at about 20 yards. He's focused on the front so come in from behind." Spider-man told him.
"Right." Prowler jumped up and quietly climbed onto the stacks, seeing the sniper in his position. He slowly walked up behind him and put him in a chokehold, taking him out. Unbeknownst to Prowler, a sniper across the shipping yard had his sights lined up on him so he moved his finger to pull the trigger.
[Thwip]
Spider-man then came in with a web zip and kicked him across the face, taking him out quickly. He rolled forward and fired some impact webbing at two guards walking by below and pinned them to the side. He turned around and fired some webbing at the sniper he took out before web zipping up onto a perch. "All right. Seven down. Let's take out the rest. Guard, ahead of you. Take him."
"On it." Prowler quietly took him out while Spider-man webbed up another sniper.
The two continued to work in unison, taking out the surrounding guards in the shipping yard one by one. There were a few close calls and they had to separate those that hung in groups, but they managed to do what needed to be done.
Spider-man webbed up the last guard to a cargo container and with that things seemed to be done. "All right, guards are taken care of. Shipping sight is secure." Prowler said. "Should we check out the buildings for the vaults?"
"Sounds like a good place to start. Not that if we find it, we can even access it." Spider-man said as he web zipped over to the building while Prowler used his grapple line.
"Will, actually I think you're closer than you realize." Felicity told him. "It took a while, but I finally managed to crack into the database of the company behind the tech and programming of the vault. I went through all the data they had on the keycards and managed to isolate the unique RFID signal the card gives us that allows it to connect to the system on the safe. The signal itself is pretty unique so tracking it should be easy and I can filter your HUD to pick up the signal if it's close by. Hang on."
Felicity sent his HUD a new program and he saw the loading bar of it uploading. "Thanks. Where are the others?"
"They should be there soon. There's an abnormal amount of traffic in the city tonight and they don't move as fast as you. And you did go in without waiting for them." Felicity reminded him.
He and Prowler entered the building from the bottom and would work their way up. Nothing was out of the ordinary and the place seemed exactly like you would expect a workplace for a shipping yard owned by a criminal organization. Real logistical work required for the front mixed up with the cliché mob accoutrements like a poker and billiard table, alcohol bar, and stacks of cash or other associate items lying around. They kept moving up to the second floor and found nothing odd before moving to the third. That's where they found the main office for whoever was in the charge of the shipping yards. There was no one around but they did see the impenetrable safe because it was built into one of the walls of the office. It was massive like the kind you'd see in banks in movies and didn't look like it was going to open anytime soon. Prowler walked over, looking for any kind of weakness in the off chance they got lucky but that was not gonna happen.
That's when Spider-man noticed his HUD flicker and he saw some fuzz appear on the wall behind the main desk where a stock painting was placed. "Will, that's the RFID signal from the keycard to the safe. It's there." She told him. "Huh, guess we got lucky."
"Yeah. Weird." Spider-man walked over to the wall and removed the stock painting to see a small wall safe. He used one of his acid embrittlement bombs on the safe and managed to melt the lock enough for him to yank the safe door off. While the acid embrittlement bombs were good for this safe, he didn't have nowhere near enough to make a dent in the safe holding the drive. He got the keycard and once he had it in his hand, Felicity was able to use his suit's systems to hack into it and managed to get the code.
"Ok, got the keycard and the code. Now you just need the handprint." She told him.
"Yeah, but whose?" Spider-man wondered.
"If I had to guess, Hammerhead since he took over this place." Prowler guessed, moving one hand behind his back flexed his claws a bit like he was readying for something.
"Great, like that doesn't make things more difficult for us." Spider-man remarked when his spider-sense began to go off like nuts.
"Whoa, Will. Reinforcements just arrived. They barged through the gates and…oh my god! Get out!"
Spider-man looked out the window and saw several cars and trucks outside with Maggia men firing RPG rockets at the third-floor window. "GET OUT!" Spider-man grabbed Prowler and threw him out the side window before jumping out after him just as the rockets blew up the third floor of the building. Prowler and Spider-man were sent flying by the explosion, but the latter was hit with greater force since he was closer and ended up being sent into the waters of Star City bay. Prowler just tumbled down the fire escape, fell over the edge and crashed onto a cargo container.
Spider-man broke the surface of the water, dazed and a little concussed by the force of the explosion but lucid enough to realize he had survived. He kicked his feet to stay afloat as fought against the waves of Star City bay. With his dazed mind and the minor concussion, he wasn't able to see much but he did see enough to know that Prowler was alive, and he was being dragged away. He fought through the confusion and swam to shore, managing to pull himself up out of the water. He pulled himself up over the railing and rolled to the ground, lingering on his back for a bit as he took a moment to catch his breath and let his brain settle. There he saw Prowler being tied up and shoved into the back of a van before it drove away with two other cars as escorts. One car remained and he saw its four occupants linger a moment as one walked over to him. The Maggia goon raised his shotgun and aimed it at his head only for a loud sonic scream to go off causing everyone to cover their ears. The gunman standing over Spider-man was shot in the back and fell down as two others were shot with arrows in the chest. Black Canary raced forward and swung her baton into the back leg of one goon before hitting him in the back of the head, knocking him out while Arsenal took out one and a masked Diggle took out the third.
The three rushed over and helped Spider-man up to his feet. "Are you all right?" Arsenal asked him.
"Yeah. Just a little dazed." He answered as they set him down on a small box so he could catch his breath and take a moment. "You guys got here just in time."
"Yeah, well we got lucky and so did you. Next time, wait for us." Black Canary told him. "This was a trap."
"Yeah, it had to be. Something didn't feel right from the start. There must have been hidden cameras or something so that they knew when we were here. Who were they?" He asked.
"From what we saw it was just Maggia men so likely Hammerhead. He likely knew Prowler was coming for the last drive and set a trap for him. Guess you got caught in the middle of it." Diggle theorized.
"Prowler…they have him. They have Hobie. We need to get him back." Spider-man stood up but wobbled a bit. He would have collapsed had Dig not managed to catch him.
"Easy, Will. You need to get your strength back first. The fact that you survived that explosion, even with your powers is lucky. Let me just give you a quick check to make sure nothing's broken." Diggle helped him back up and led him over to the van.
Line Break xxxxx
It had been about an hour since things at the shipping yard went bad. It was a trap set by Hammerhead to get Prowler and Will got caught in the middle of it. Thankfully, Will wasn't caught up in the explosion of 9 RPG rockets blowing up the third floor of a building but the force of said explosion still knocked him around. He was lucky enough to walk away without any serious injuries other than a jumbled head. Diggle gave him a quick check up and he had no other injuries, minus some bruising. And thankfully, Will healed fast so his head would be fine although he popped a few Tylenol and began to feel better.
"You sure you don't want us to call your mom and have her take a look at you?" Laurel asked, fussing over him but he waved her off and stood up.
"I'm good." Will cracked his neck and back before grabbing his mask. "Right now, we need to find out where Hammerhead could have Hobie. It's my fault he's captured right now."
"Will, that's not your fault. That trap Hammerhead set was for him way. That kid kicked a hornets nest and sooner or later Hammerhead would have gone after him." Dig told him.
"Diggle's right. Prowler was going to get that last drive with or without you and Hammerhead still would have set that trap. If anything, he'd be dead now if it weren't for you." Roy added.
"Great. So, he's not dead but now held prisoner by a psychotic gangster he's been stealing from who has a penchant for beating people to death via the metal plate in his head. I need to find him before Hammerhead kill's him." Will said with urgency as he still felt responsible despite what the others told him.
"I'm sorry, Will but the tracker you put on Prowler's not responding. Likely got damaged in his fall when you saved him from the explosion." Felicity said and Will seethed in frustration when he remembered something else. "What? I know you well enough to know your idea face."
"I gave him an earpiece so we could coordinate at the shipping yard. Can you track that?" He asked her.
"Yeah, I can. Give me a second." Felicity connected her system to his suit to get the communication frequency used for the earpiece and then connected to the Palmer Tech, Queen Consolidated, and STAR labs satellites. It took a few seconds, but she managed to get a lock on his location all the way uptown in the nicer part of Star City. "He's at a location on Adam's street. According to city records it's a building currently under construction."
"All right, we need to move fast. Hammerhead killed a man on a live stream and he's got more than enough reasons to kill Prowler." Will said. "I'll call Yuri on the way and see if she can send some SCPD to help us."
"Ok. Let's go. Felicity keep us updated." Diggle told her as they left the bunker.
"Be careful!" She called out as they left. Laurel and Roy got in the van and Diggle drove them as fast as possible while Will swung through the city, calling Yuri as he made his way to get Prowler.
"Hey, Yuri. I told you about what happened at the shipping yard, but I got a lead on where Hammerhead took Prowler. The skyscraper on Adam's street that's being built. Prowler's being kept there and knowing that Hammerhead would likely be there for revenge on what he's done this could be our chance to get him. I'm heading there now with Arsenal and Black Canary providing some help, but I wouldn't mind some police backup."
"All right sounds like as solid of a lead as we've had. I'll assemble a tactical squad and SWAT to help but things are crazy here. No one's heard from Captain Lance since his meeting with the lead FBI agent."
"Wait, what? He's missing?" Will asked her.
"We're not sure but his meeting was over two hours ago, and no one has been able to get in touch with him. The commissioners got most of the SCPD looking for him."
"Dammit. Why does this kind of stuff always happen at once?" He wondered.
"Hey, relax. We do what Lance would want us to do. Stop Hammerhead, get Prowler, and then find him." Yuri told him. "I'll get there as soon as I can."
"Got it. Keep me posted." Will hung up and kept swinging as fast as he could.
After some swinging, he arrived near the area, so he jumped onto the side of a building for a vantage point and took a look at the area. From what he could see the place was absent of any civilians, likely having been scared away and he didn't see many Maggia goons, likely hiding. He took note of the buildings and began making plans. "Dig, there's a building up the block with a perfect view of the area."
"Roger that. I'm heading up now. Roy and Laurel are on standby." Dig replied as he could hear the thudding of him climbing up the fire escape so quickly.
"We're ready to move. Just say when." Roy radioed.
"Hang on one second. I see movement. Some Maggia goons." Will enhanced his vision and saw some Maggia goons escorting people through the construction yard. Their hands were tied, and they had bags over their heads, so they were hostages. He couldn't make out much of who they were given their clothing but two did stand out. One seemed to be wearing a familiar looking purple sweatshirt minus armored gauntlets and boots while the other was wearing uniformed dress blues of a police officer. "Oh, crap."
"Crap? What crap?" Felicity asked.
"We've got a serious situation here. Roy, Laurel, get ready to move. Dig, get ready with the sniper." He told them before he jumped forward and activated his web wings. Gliding through the air until he landed on the arm of a crane. The hostages were pushed into a large deep pit dug next to a cement truck with some Maggia goons standing guard. "Let the hostages go!"
"Spider-man!" Lance shouted.
"Spider-man? Get us out of here!" Hobie shouted.
"Look who showed up. The Bug." They heard Hammerhead's voice come over speakers set up all around the construction zone. Spider-man squinted his eyes, and he could see Hammerhead perched up at the top of the building that was still under construction. "You're just in time for the broadcast."
"Broadcast?" Spider-man looked around and saw one of the Maggia goons aiming a camera into the pit as multiple large floodlights and spotlights turned on, illuminating the area like it was being lit for filming which in a way it was.
"Good evening, Star City! Welcome to tonight's entertainment. The changing of the guard." Hammerhead said as one of his men started up the cement truck and powered up the generator. "Remember when honor and loyalty weren't just words? When the Maggia were feared and respected? Tonight, the good old days are coming back! And a message will be sent out to anyone who dare trying to stop us be they no good traitors, other worthless punks trying to take what's ours, or cops who should know their place! Enjoy the cement suits, boys."
Spider-man web zipped through the air and flying side kicked the Maggia goon standing by the generator. He quickly shut it off which shut off the cement mixer. The Maggia goons opened fire at him, so he jumped and dodged. "Why can't Hammerhead just be a normal Maggia criminal? You know, quietly running a waste management business, wearing track suits, eating lots of meatballs, running the occasional scam. Why does he have such grand ambition?"
He used his webbing to quickly disarm the Maggia goons armed with guns before he knocked one back with a flying knee to the chest. Following that up by knocking out another with a powerful uppercut that knocked him off his feet, he webbed another guy in the face and pulled him into a tornado kick across the face.
[Revving of engines and squeaking of tires]
Multiple vehicles drove into the construction yard with accompanying gunfire putting Spider-man on the defensive. They swerved to a stop and over a hundred Maggia goons had entered the construction area with guns to ensure that Hammerhead's plans continued.
"You want a taste of that cement too, Spider?!"
Spider-man swerved and dodged the outpour of gunfire allowing one of the goons to restart the generator and get the cement truck rolling again. One by one, Hammerhead's goons were gunned down by a sniper, Diggle obviously, but then stopped after the 5th shot which was him reloading.
[Sonic cry]
The Maggia goons covered their ears in pain as Black Canary used her handheld sonic device to disorient them. It was added on by several flashbang arrows that went off, concussing many of the Maggia. Spider-man went to work using his webbing to quickly disarm as many of the Maggia as he could while they were incapacitated. He fired dual strands of splitter web and snagged four rifles before he fired a web at the hook of a crane and yanked hard, causing it to smack into several goons. He disarmed several more Maggia gunmen and tossed their guns into the cement pit before he webbed a large wooden pallet and hurled it at the goon near the generator. He rolled on the ground and jumped into a split kick before shutting the generator off.
"Arsenal, the generator!" Spider-man punched a guy in the face, then punched him in the gut and dropped low to double-kick him in the chest which sent him flying.
Arsenal push kicked a Maggia goon back before turning around, smacking two guys with his bow before he fired an explosive arrow at the generator, blowing it up. He used his bow to block a crowbar before kicking out his left leg and kneeing him across the face. Black Canary knocked a goon to the ground and kicked him across the face before turning around and elbowing another guy in the nose. She punched him in the gut and followed that up with a punch to the face before throwing him to the ground. A guy came at her from behind with a wooden plank but was shot by Diggle in his sniper perch. She turned and blocked a kick from a goon but was punched in the stomach before she jabbed him in the throat with the short end of her baton and then smacked him across the face, finishing that up leg sweep.
Spider-man flipped over and webbed the guy's body. When landed he pulled and spin him around and around, knocking several Maggia goons down before letting go. Predictably he slammed into some of his compatriots, and they were all hit with impact webbing. He then kicked a guy in the face and jumped off his body, backflipping through the air before web throwing an old barrel at two guys. He landed on the ground and quickly dodged a crowbar and knife stab from two goons before he kicked one in the face and punched the other. He dropped them both to the ground with a leg sweep before jumping up into the air. He charged his fist back, channeling his venom strike before web pulling himself to the ground and punching the ground. His venom strike splashed out and shocked five nearby goons who he then webbed up and hurled into a car.
He saw a Maggia goon try to get the cement flowing again manually so Spider-man webbed him from the back and pulled him away. He pulled him in his direction and charged his fist with another venom strike, landing a venom uppercut punch that sent the guy crashing into the fence. He then webbed the cement pour at the end and gave it a hard tug, bending it at a weird angle so even if cement flowed it would either spill over the side or at the very least flow at a slower rate. He saw Arsenal fighting a guy when someone ran up behind him, so he leapt forward and took him out with a flying knee to the face.
He web pulled a guy forward and backflipped into a moonsault onto the guy's shoulders before taking him to the ground with a reverse-hurricanrana takedown. Arsenal fired an arrow, hitting a guy in the arm which is when Spider-man slid by on the ground and webbed him in the face. Arsenal then ran forward and knocked him out with a flying elbow strike. Spider-man landed a tornado kick to a guy's face, knocking him out before firing a web to the side, hitting a goon in the face. Black Canary then came by and kneed him in the gut before hitting him in the back of the head. Two Maggia goons were going to attack her from behind but one was shot by Diggle while another was hit by Spider-man. He hit him with a jumping roundhouse kick into a jump spin hook kick that knocked a few of the guy's teeth out.
[Police sirens]
Yuri and the SCPD backup had arrived and many quickly got out of their vehicles and marched forward. Yuri led them and they had the Maggia goons at gunpoint. Without their guns and now outnumbered with most of their number having been taken out by the vigilantes they had no choice but to surrender. A few put a last ditched effort to fight so Yuri and the SCPD had some fun. Yuri especially, using her baton to knock some Maggia goons out.
Spider-man rushed over to the cement pit and pulled out Captain Lance, quickly removing the bag over his head and breaking the handcuffs restraining him. "Captain Lance, are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm good. I've been through tougher spots than this." Lance assured him as the SCPD began to secure the area. Laurel would have liked to rush over to her father but given current secrets she couldn't. Lance did give her a knowing nod to let her know he was ok and that she did good. "Where is he?"
"Mr. Tall, Dark, and Flat-headed? Up there. Waiting for his curtain call. I'll handle him." Spider-man promised before looking over at Hobie down in the cement pit. "Make sure he stays safe. He can help us later."
"Got it. Go get him." Lance said and Spider-man nodded.
He web zipped up into the air and swung up onto the construction rafters. He ran up the side of the being constructed building before jumping off and swinging around. He swung up onto the highest floor of the building which was still under construction and clung to a half-done support pillar.
"Come out, Hammerhead! Your show's over." Spider-man warned him when his spider-sense went off. He jumped to the ground to avoid being impaled by small metal spikes and then did several flips and twists to dodge automatic gunfire. One the gunfire stopped he spun into a low crouch as he saw Hammerhead walk forward, reloading an assault rifle with a fresh magazine. He was wearing his usual black business suit but oddly enough he had Prowler's boots, gauntlets, and belt.
"Not bad, bug. It is long overdue that the two of us should meet. I finally get to see you with my own eyes. The little annoyance that's been causing me so much frustration. You even spoiled my big night." Hammerhead told him off.
"Sorry about that, Hammerhead. Guess I just have an aversion to public executions. They went out of style in the middle ages." Spider-man informed him.
"Out of style, maybe, but not because they weren't effective. A message needed to be sent when you mess with the Maggia. Seems that some people forgot about that, including some snot nose punk." Hammerhead noticed Spider-man looked at his new accessories. "Do you like them? After I saw how affective that punk kid was with this stuff, I decided to try it for myself. I got to say, it may not be my style, but it's definitely got some perks."
He fired his assault rifle and Spider-man jumped around to dodge before firing a web and yanking the gun out of his hands. "Eh, I hate to tell you but purple and green aren't really your colors." Spider-man broke the gun in two and tossed it aside. "It's over, Hammerhead. You tried to kill a police captain. You're not getting away from this."
Hammerhead sighed in frustration, like he was being scolded for doing nothing wrong. "I'm trying to revitalize the mob over here! Back when the Maggia ran this city, things were good. We had order and stability. We messed with the cops a little bit, they messed with us a little to save face and no one was the wiser. Even when the Feds took the heads of the families down all those years ago, we held on. Because that is who we are. We are the Maggia, and we can handle anything. Even when Tombstone was around, things were fine." Hammerhead then pointed his finger at Spider-man. "That's when you showed up and everything changed. The Arrow went after the rich and the other gangs. Hell, he couldn't make a dent against us but when you got involved everything went to crap. And when you exposed Tombstone, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. All these pretenders came up trying to be something that they're not. Star City doesn't take the Maggia seriously no more. They don't respect us but after they see me beat your head in, all of that is gonna change. Time to bring back the glory days!"
Hammerhead fired a mini-missile from his gauntlet, so Spider-man flipped to the side to dodge. "Since when could they do that?" Spider-man fired a web into Hammerhead's face, obscuring his vision allowing him to close the distance and nail him across the face with punch but he recoiled and shook his right hand in pain. "Argh! That is one hard head."
He quickly backflipped to dodge a grab and webbed a dry cement bag at Hammerhead. He sliced it with the claws causing the powder to get everywhere and obscure his vision. "What the hell?!"
He waved his hands to try and get the dust to clear but with it being dry cement it was like a thick cloud of smoke. Spider-man came at him from the side with a flying side kick to the face and based on the loud metallic clang he heard he hit metal, so he then hit him with a jumping back kick that knocked him back. His spider-sense went off, so he jumped into a back-hand spring and then into an aerial twist to dodge several metal spikes.
He heard some chatter and a few of Hammerhead's men had come out to join him. These must have been his most loyal men as they were likely all that he had left. They opened fire with their guns, so Spider-man rolled forward and pushed up into a vault before web zipping through the air. They tried to shoot him but missed as he fired a web at a support pillar and swung around it, turning the corner, and taking out a goon with a drop kick to the chest. He backflip kicked another goon in the face and then spun into a 540 spinning hook kick that sent him flying into a wall. He webbed the last two remaining men and yanked his arms across his chest making them hit one another before knocking them to the ground with a leg sweep.
With his spider-sense going off he quickly backflipped high into the air which allowed him to dodge Hammerhead's full throttle head-first charge. He landed and saw Hammerhead burst through a drywall like it was nothing do to his momentum and the plate in his head. "Dang. I know that's cool and all but that's likely still causing some brain damage." Spider-man pointed out.
"Shut up, bug! Just die!" Hammerhead fired all the metal spikes from his gauntlet only for Spider-man to dodge them with ease. Hammerhead charged at him while still firing all the metal spikes from his gauntlets until he heard an empty click, he then fired his grapple cable, so Spider-man jumped to dodge which is exactly what he wanted as he was open. He headbutted Spider-man right in the chest and sent him crashing through a wall and into some wooden pallets.
"Ugh…ok…that hurt…" Spider-man groaned in pain.
"Nice try, bug but you don't mess with the Maggia." Hammerhead walked over to his body and flexed the claws on the gauntlets. "You know, it's only fitting that I get to be the one to take you down after all the grief you caused me. And when I'm done with you, I can get to work on cleaning up the rest of this city."
He flex the claws and was ready to rip Spider-man's spine out from behind when he saw the bug's left hand move underneath his stomach and reach over. "Thwip." Spider-man webbed him in the face, momentarily distracting him.
"Ah, what the hell?!" Hammerhead quickly ripped the webbing off, but Spider-man fired two more webs at his hands and pulled him in close before drop kicking him in the chest. Hammerhead tumbled on the floor but picked himself up and fired a metal spike. Except nothing happened. That's when he realized the gauntlets were gone, having been ripped off his hands when Spider-man kicked him. He saw the bug toss them aside, so he pulled out some old school brass knuckles. "Fine. I don't need fancy tech to kill you."
Hammerhead charged head first, intending to headbutt him so Spider-man fired a web at his face and pulled him forward, putting him off balance. He punched Hammerhead in the face with a right cross, using more strength than usual and quickly spun around to land another right punch before jumping into a tornado kick that knocked him to the ground. Hammerhead groaned in pain as he managed to get to his feet only for Spider-man to web his legs and pull, tripping him onto his front and yanking off the boots he stole from Prowler. He jumped into the air and fired a web, swinging around as Hammerhead got his feet. He looked around and saw Spider-man swing forward, holding his right arm back as it glowed and sparked with orange electricity. Spider-man concentrated his venom strike into his punch and punched Hammerhead across the face. The metal plate in his head conducted the bio-electricity of the venom punch, instantly knocking him out.
"And that is the end of that." Spider-man said, ripping Prowler's belt off Hammerhead's body before tying him up. A part of him was a bit worried about the potential damage his venom punch could do to Hammerhead. Given that metal plate in his head, it could be made of something that conducted electricity so he might have inadvertently fried his brain. The doctors at the hospital would have to check him out.
He heard some rustling and clatter of boots as SCPD and FBI agents rushed up onto the top floor and secured the area. The SCPD relaxed their guard a bit seeing Spider-man standing triumphant over Hammerhead but not the FBI. "Hands up! You're under arrest!"
"Seriously?" Spider-man looked at them like they were nuts. "I help take down the psycho gang leader and you're going to arrest me? I think you guys have your priorities messed up."
Spider-man then hefted Hammerhead up over his shoulders to carry. "Put him down!"
"Oh, so you want to carry the 200-pound Maggia gangster down over 80 flights of stairs?" Spider-man asked and the FBI agents kind of kept their mouths shut after that. "I'll deliver him downstairs for you, taking the express way."
Spider-man fired a web and jumped off the side, lowering himself down to ground level. Captain Lance and the SCPD were quick to secure the area with the help of the FBI. The Maggia goons were sitting around awaiting transport to Iron Heights while certain prisoners were already being loaded into an SCPD prisoner transport van. Said certain prisoners were the hostages that Hammerhead had taken. Captain Lance was the only non-criminal arrested as the others were the three remaining heads of the Maggia families, the Triad leader, Bratva head, and Hobie Brown AKA Prowler. Lance knew the DA's office would want to get indictments on them right away so they would be transported first. Lance felt a little sad seeing Hobie Brown being put into the same vehicle with the other hardened and seasoned criminals he wasn't exactly innocent in all this.
He was brought out of his thoughts when he saw Spider-man swing down with Hammerhead over his shoulder. "Here you go. One psycho criminal mastermind in the form of Hammerhead. He's all yours."
"Thanks." Lance signaled over a SWAT team to secure him while he and Spider-man talked. "Well done. And thanks again for the rescue."
"Don't mention it. The others?"
"Ducked out when the FBI arrived. You might want to make yourself scarce as well." Lance told him as he noticed the looks, they were getting.
"Right." Spider-man looked over at the van and saw Hobie. "Captain Lance, look about Prowler…"
"I know. Yuri gave me the details." Lance replied as they saw Yuri organizing her men. She saw them looking at her and gave them a simple nod. "If the kid really can give us good information than I'll have Laurel talk to the DA. Get him some probation, maybe some protection for him and his mother."
"All right. Thanks." Spider-man walked over to the van just as the officer was about to put Hobie in. "Can I get a minute?"
"Make it quick, sir. We're on a schedule." The officer said and Spider-man nodded.
"Don't worry, Prowler. You're gonna be fine." Spider-man assured him.
"Really? This doesn't feel fine." Hobie referring to him being arrested.
"Trust me. You'll be fine. Captain Lance is a straight shooter. Hammerhead's done for. Just tell Captain Lance and the DA what you know, and he'll work his magic to get you a reduced sentence. More than likely probation and protection for you and your mother." Spider-man said to Hobie who just sighed.
"Honestly, that's about as best as I can hope for in this case." Hobie remarked as he got into the van. "You know, at the warehouse I was going to take that keycard from you to try and get into the vault. Kind of had a backup plan."
"Yeah, I figured though if that went along you've be on the run for the rest of your life. Not exactly a good way to life." Spider-man pointed out and Hobie shrugged. "You'll be fine, I promise."
"Thanks. Maybe you're not as bad as I thought." Hobie said as the police officer closed up the back.
"Sorry, sir but we need to go. We're on a schedule." The officer said and Spider-man nodded. The officer and his partner got into the driver's and passenger's seats of the van and drove away with a squad car escort. All in all, things were looking up.
[Explosion]
Everyone ducked and covered their heads as the prison van made it about a block away before it went up in flames. It wasn't an accident as nothing hit it so it must have been rigged to explode. The car was a fiery wreck so there were no survivors. In that moment, Will was experiencing a very mild case of shell shock, seeing the van suddenly explode and realizing that Hobie was dead. In his last moments when he thought everything was done for and he'd be going to jail Spider-man had promised him things would be ok. That he would be able to make up for causing the gang war and everything that happened. That he and his mom would be safe. Will assured him of that and in a split second it was all gone. The SCPD and the FBI quickly secured the scene and did what they could but the prisoners inside were dead.
[Chuckles]
He turned his head and saw Hammerhead sitting there on the ground, still webbed up. He looked a little out of it, but he was chuckling to himself. In that moment, Will felt nothing but anger as the lenses on his mask retracted and glowed red, giving him a menacing glow. He marched over to Hammerhead, something Lance and Yuri saw so they tried to stop him.
"Spider-man, wait!" Lance pleaded but was brushed aside.
"You don't want to do this!" Yuri got in front of him, but she was pushed aside as Spider-man grabbed Hammerhead by the neck, picked up into the air with one hand and then slammed him into the dirt with tremendous force. He then proceeded to punch Hammerhead in the face repeatedly. Despite the metal plate in his head and the pain it caused with the punching, Spider-man did not stop and viciously beat Hammerhead with his fist. His little attack forced the FBI to pull their guns on him for attacking their prisoner but in defense of Spider-man the SCPD pulled their guns out and a very tense standoff was had.
"STAND DOWN! HOLD YOUR FIRE! HOLD YOUR FIRE!" Lance shouted, making sure no one fired a shot and things escalated. "Spider-man, stop!"
"Spider-man, he's not worth it! You don't want to do that!" Yuri pleaded but Spider-man kept punching. "This isn't going to change anything! Spider-man! SPIDER-MAN!"
Her shouting managed to get through to him after the twentieth punch because Spider-man stopped. His glove was bloody as Hammerhead's face was bleeding. His nose was likely broken, one of his eyes was shut from the bruising and there were various cuts on his face that were bleeding. [Chuckles—pained cough] "That's the best you got? What? Can't finish the job?"
"Like you did? If that what you call finishing the job? A car bomb. Take care of any kind of witnesses and enemies you have in one fell swoop. You know you praised the Maggia as being honorable but you're not. There's nothing honorable about blowing someone up like you do." Spider-man viciously grabbed him with both hands as he glared at the man with unbridled anger. "The Maggia are done. I'm going to make sure of that. Every single trace of them are going to be wiped from this city until they're nothing more than a distant memory and you look like nothing more than a psychopath."
"Nice try, hero…but you don't scare me." Hammerhead mocked only for Spider-man's right hand to begin sparking with electricity in a very violent manner.
"You don't know how scary I can be…" Spider-man said, using his voice changer to sound as menacing as possible before giving him one final venom punch to the face which knocked him out and definitely jostled around the metal plate in his skull.
He let Hammerhead go and walked away. Some of the FBI agents tried to stop him but the glare his mask gave them ensured that they backed away. He fired a web and swung away leaving the scene to Yuri and Captain Lance to fix up. When he was about ten blocks away, he dropped down to the roof of a building and pulled his mask off. His breathing was labored like he couldn't catch his breath, but he managed to after several deep breaths.
"AHHHHH!"
Will shouted at the top of his lungs in anger. For the first time in a long time as both Spider-man and Will, he failed…and someone died because of him. A part of him knew it was an unavoidable part of the job.
That didn't mean it made it any easier.
Elsewhere…
A black Sedan was parked under a bridge behind an unassuming blue sedan. Anyone familiar with this scene would recognize it for what it was. A secret meeting. Some time passed and an FBI agent exited the black sedan and got into his blue sedan before driving away. Inside the black sedan was Wesley, the spectacled broker that the Stokes worked with and commissioned Prowler for all the heists on behalf of his boss. He was sorting through some stuff in his briefcase which included a personnel file on Hobie Brown AKA Prowler, another file that had scientific and engineering information on Prowler's weapons, and finally there were a total of 9 flash drives. Wesley took out his phone and called his employer.
[Dial tone] "Is it done?"
"Yes, sir. Car bomb. Made to look like Hammerhead's last stroke of vengeance. Our man played his part perfectly and acquired the final drive for us." Wesley informed him.
"And the original four?"
"Found and recovered at Mr. Brown's apartment. Once I realized that Mr. Brown was attempting to scam us, I had him followed and personally retrieved them myself. They were hidden in a shoe box of all things. His mother wasn't present. She was gone but can have men track her down." Wesley remarked.
"There's no need. Mr. Brown has been dealt with and we have what we need. And no doubt the SCPD and Spider-man will be looking for her so no need to get on their radar."
"Understood, sir."
I'll admit I admire the guts. Keeping the originals from the heists while giving us copies. Mr. Brown was more cunning than I expected from one so young. Unfortunately, his recklessness and lack of loyalty were his undoing. The next Prowler will be much more compliant."
"Yes, sir. Should I contact Dr. Mason and have him begin making the alterations we requested?"
"Yes. Might as well get a head start but we can wait. With all the attention this war has caused, what we need right now is for things to go back to normal. A month or so from now, no one will know what is going on. Inform everyone to keep a low profile."
"Understood." Wesley hung up and his driver drove them away.
A gang war had been ended but not exactly peacefully or well for all parties involved considering what was bubbling beneath the surface of the city. A new power had arisen, seamlessly taking control, and slipping into the criminal element of the city. Sure, the heroes knew something, but they weren't close to knowing everything.
Only time would tell if it would be too late before something bad happened again.
End of Chapter 16
Hey everyone, hope you enjoyed the chapter. Sorry for the delay. Was hit with a weird case of writer's block for this story but I got past it and we can move forward. A lot of the old guard, in terms of criminals, are gone and now secretly replaced with the new once again. Things are getting interesting. Hobie Brown, AKA The first Prowler is dead but it's just a name. Someone else could take it up in the future and next time they won't be an amateur. Hammerhead's taken down but is this the last of him we've seen? Doubt it. He's stubborn, that's for sure.
Next chapter, things get back to a sense of normalcy now that Hammerhead's gang war is over and the man is in jail. Oliver and Thea return from their extended training trip which means it's their family drama Will has to deal with. Oh joy. Until next time.
Updates for February: On 2/29 will be Omniverse Earth-38 and The Crimson Speedster.
Also, not sure if you checked my profile page but I do have a P-A-T-R-E-O-N page now. It's Choejhulkp9 writing endeavor. Don't feel pressured to sign up. Regardless, I still plan on doing what I'm doing. Writing for free and updating on and I'm slowly working on Wattpad. Sorry I'm really bad about that. But for those that would like to help with what they can or are feeling gracious, it would be greatly appreciated. I've got tiers for any small amount. Again, don't feel pressured.
Again, thanks to War Sage, Masamune X23, JhotoLoraxius, Omni-Creator Kami of Anime and all the other people who PM me with ideas for my stories. Thank you, guys. They help a lot.
