Got to go fast to go see Sonic the Hedgehog! With it being delayed due to fan backlash of the first trailer, and with it bringing the same vibes as the live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks films, Hop, and others, Sonic proved to be well worth it in the end. It turned out better then expected.
Steve and his friends are Sonic fans. They saw the TV shows, and had played the games. So they were excited, and pumped for this movie when the date came closer and closer.
So, Sonic had been living in Montana for ten years, and is lonely. He meets with Tom (Donut Lord), and the two go to San Francisco to retrieve Sonic's rings that fell into a portal on top of a building there. They are also on the run from Dr. Robotnik (Eggman), his henchman, and Eggman's many machines.
So, if you saw the very first trailer to this movie, you must've been very horrified of Sonic's design. His human teeth, and his 'gloves' (just white hands), and his not looking like, well, Sonic. Now some people might ignore the fans' complaints, but luckily, not this time. They listened to them, and had him redesigned. The movie, if the fans let it be, and didn't complain, was going to be released last November, but got delayed to Valentine's day. Good thing, because the movie would've been harder to look at if Sonic's design stayed the same. Better late then never! If this movie listened, maybe more down the line will too.
While I liked Detective Pikachu more, this movie is still decent and fun enough. And if you stay a bit into the credits, you may see a familiar face if you're a Sonic fan that may or may not set up the sequel. I'm not, but I was excited! There also may or may not be two scenes between the end credits.
If you are one of the people that complained about Sonic's original design, at least see this once. You may be surprised, and want to see it again and again. Heck, you might even buy it on DVD or something. If you didn't, or wish you had, and are a Sonic or video game fan, or whatever, still see it. It's still worth checking out.
If movies like this, and Detective Pikachu proves anything, is that with good research, good storytelling, good actors, and a good director, video game movie can be good. If the upcoming Super Mario Brothers movie by Illumination is also good, and way better the the awful 1993 live-action, we might be entering a new era of good video game movies. I certainly hope so.
Oh, and happy President's Day (or what's left of it), and congratulations to V. Unbeatable for winning AGT: The Champions season 2!
