July 24th
We went out to the theaters again in the first time in over a year! And it felt so good to do so! And what is our first movie to celebrate the occasion? It's the sequel to 1996's Space Jam. And interesting enough Space Jam was Steve's fist film he ever saw in a cinema. So going to Space Jam: A New Legacy felt perfect.
The film follows mainly the same plot. An NBA star has to play basketball with Looney Tunes characters. Only this time the NBA star has to save his son and rekindle their strained relationship with him. The NBA star this time is Lebron James and 25 years ago, it was Michel Jordan.
The son is into video games, so much that he even designed his own. The game he designed is like basketball, but has different aspects to it then the game. This puts the strain in his relationship with his father. The father wants him to play real basketball instead. His son then gets taken and now Lebron has to save him.
This film being a Warner Brothers property has a lot of Warner Brothers characters and references. There is the Iron Giant, Hogwarts, Scooby Doo Characters, Yogi Bear and more. Rick and Morty even make an appearance. I don't even know that they're Warner Brothers property, but hey, if they can have a Simpsons short in front of Onwards and is now owned by Disney, then Rick and Morty can appear in a kids' film. And this being a family- friendly film, they had to tone them down. But hey, at least when the kids are old enough for Rick and Morty, they can say 'hey, it's those people from Space Jam: A New Legacy'!
This was an okey follow up to the 25 year old original, not as good, but okey. The first film was kind of goofy and kiddish for adult's tastes, but for a 90's kid like Steve and his friends, it's nostalgic and a part of their childhoods. Even I liked it and have a soft spot for it. So does Hayley and Jeff, especially Jeff. Hey; these films are expected to be looney.
If you use the Internet a lot, then you know Pepe Le Pew isn't in this. His character was canceled due to him being him and people taking his actions the wrong way, but hey, that's 2021 for you. They had to cut his scene. But he was in the first one at least!
If you can't make it to a movie theater, or you're not ready to go to one just yet, it's also on HBO Max, But if you can make it and want to go back to see the follow up to your childhood, I think you'll like this film just fine. And just like the first film and like the film suggests, it's going to be looney.
