"What does being Greek have to do with anything?" Harry asked her after lunch. He was dreading detention and the question had been on his mind since Hagrid's.
"In reality, next to nothing. But most wizards have legends about how Greece was where magic started. And then the Romans perfected it. Which is why most of our spells are in latin. But I think it's a bunch of hogwash," Hermione said.
"Was this in Professor Binns' lectures?" Harry asked. That actually sounded interesting. But just about anything would have been more interesting than the ghost's rambling classes. He wasn't the only student to use it as a planned nap.
"No." Hermione smiled. "For whatever reason Binns never starts before the Norman conquest. Don't understand why that's the starting point but okay."
Harry continued asking questions, most of which Hermione had an answer for. Some of which she didn't. But she answered as well as she could and pointed him to some books for things she couldn't.
Later, when both Harry and Ron had detention Hermione double checked her homework and relaxed with a book. She had a nice relaxing evening until it was time for bed. She headed up to her dorm and tucked herself in ready to let her mind drift off.
"And you're sure that Lockhart didn't hear anything?" Hermione asked.
"The man's in love with the sound of his own voice," Harry groaned. "I doubt he would have heard a foghorn."
"Or you could have been imagining it," Ron said. "He did keep you till after one."
Harry shrugged. "Maybe. Maybe it was a ghost. Didn't see one but I was writing addresses."
Hermione wasn't sure. She needed to look into it more.
A/N: So I distinctly remember the first time I looked up Hogwarts founding date it was in the late 11th century. So after the Norman conquest. Rowling has since changed it to the mid 10th century. Just before. But that feels wrong with what I know about the history of the British Isles. Also feels really late for a single school for multiple countries. Even if wizard affairs are separate from muggle ones. But that's a discussion for another time.
