Seems that seeing the labs that they worked in was all it took to want to get Hiro to want to try and get into the school. He took a few days to think of an invention through the student showcase. If he makes something that will blow Callaghan away, he gets in. Taking some time to think of it, he believes he found something using his Mega Bot as inspiration.
After taking weeks to prepare for it, with help from the group offering some suggestions, and even Peter offering him one of his transmitters for him to use, he was able to complete it in time for the next showcase.
Peter was currently home, getting his family out of the house so they could get to the showcase.
"We ready to go?" Peter asked, walking down the stairs and zipping his jacket up.
"Yeah, getting everyone out," Teresa confirmed as she grabbed her bag. "You coming with us?"
"Gotta run to the Bugle, Jameson wants his photos," Peter said as he gestured to the door. "I'll meet you guys at the school."
"Alright. See you there." Teresa said as she made her way out the door.
Peter also walked out, making his way over to the alleyway, and changed into his suit. He got into his suit and sighed as this would be one of the few times he's back in the suit in the past month.
It's been a fun little vacation for him to not need to be Spider-Man every day in recent days. But he always knows that he needs to be Spider-Man to make sure the people out there are safe. He's a hero to the city, and his popularity only increased and exploded since the Spider-Island incident.
Swinging his way through the city, he made his way to the Daily Bugle and handed his photos to Betty. Seems Jameson wasn't in the office to give him his money, so she gave him the check he was owed for the photos.
That was a quick stop and drop on his part, seeing that was faster than he ever expected. He's usually stuck dealing with Jameson yelling at someone else, then them running away crying in the end.
But he was able to get his money and get out of the building as he immediately began making his way to the school. He wanted to see Hiro's presentation with the Microbots as he was curious to see the full demonstration.
Yet when he was making his way through the city, he felt something off when his senses went off. That caused him to stop and look around, wondering where it was coming from.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are," Peter said as he started to look around the city.
Then his senses went off, getting him to jump out of the way when a giant bolt of lightning came down and revealed a human being. In the middle of the bolt was non-other than Francine Frye as she gave a giant grin. She was wearing some bright green skintight suit with yellow lightning bolts across her shoulders and going down to her waist. There was also the same pattern on her boots, as well as a belt.
"Look at who I found! It's Spider-Man!" Francine commented with a grin. "I've been looking for you."
"Wait, did you find me, or were you looking for me?" Peter asks, trying to figure out what she's doing. "And what's with the getup? You know that Max Dillon guy took that lightning theme, right?"
"Oh, Max is gone," Francine informed him. "I now have his powers, and the power to defeat you!"
"Why?" Peter asks, not following. "What did I do to you?"
"You did nothing to me. I have been forced to watch this game from the sidelines for years. And yeah, I saw plenty of gross dudes get a leg up along the way. But now that I got my turn? I'm just here to raise some Hell, make some money!" Francine said as she summoned more lightning, then turned away to mutter. "And maybe a little payback along the way."
Peter tried to put together if that even answered his question. "Wait, that didn't explain-"
But it seemed that this Electro wasn't looking for sense or reason as she sent a giant blast of electricity at Spider-Man. Peter quickly jumped and escaped the blast as it hits the side of a building.
"Taking you, the city's greatest hero will place my status as legendary," Francine stated as she moved at lightning speed.
Over the last few weeks, Francine has been figuring out how her powers work. After absorbing them out of Max, it took a while to get used and figure out how they work. Once she did, she spent the next few days hunting down Spider-Man.
"Lady, you need to get a hobby," Peter commented as she sent a giant blast of lightning at him. "And I don't mean killing me!"
The lightning then exploded, sending rubble at Peter as he jumped out of the way. He leaped and shot a web to get out of the way, only to watch as Francine starts to fly and chase after Spider-Man.
"You fly now?!" Peter was shocked to see as he ran up the side of a building.
"Oh, I can do much more than that!" Francine cried as she shot a blast of lightning at him.
Peter leaped and started to maneuver his body around all of the lightning bolts. Time almost slowed down for Peter as he made his way around the bolts, making it over to Electro.
"Alright, Electro," Peter said as he shot out a web and hits Francine in the chest. "Wanna see something shocking?!"
Francine was shocked (pun wasn't intended) when she saw Peter make his way through his lightning. When she saw the web hot her in the chest, she was immediately wrapped up in the webbing and conducting her electricity.
"Listen, lady, I'd love to go against the reboot of some lowdown criminal," Peter commented as he shot two strands of webbing. "But I've got somewhere to be!"
Peter then dropped to the ground, getting his footing together. He then yanked Francine and sent her flying to the ground. She slammed to the ground and the force was enough to knock her unconscious.
"Wow. That was a little too easy." Peter commented, fixing his gloves and dusting himself off. "Either that or I'm getting too good at this." Then his alert went off, telling him the demonstrations were about to begin. "Shoot. I'm late."
Leaving the unconscious Electro to the cops, Peter swung off and made his way towards the school. But what he missed the moment he left, Electro gasped awake and disappeared, turning into complete electricity.
Back at the school, the group met up at the presentation with May and Peni nearby as they pushed a few trash cans filled with Hiro's microbots. They made their way through the showcase and saw all of the competition he needed to best.
"Wow. A lot of sweet tech here today." Tadashi commented, he and Hiro leading them through the showcase. "How are you feeling?"
"You're talking to an ex-bot fighter." Hiro shrugged. "Takes a lot more than this to rattle me."
"Yep, he's nervous," GoGo called out, looking around for Peter.
"Hon, you have nothing to fear, little fellow." Fred inspired from the back.
"He's so tense," Honey commented.
"No, I'm not." Hiro tried to assure them.
"You're gonna do great, Hiro," Teresa called as she dragged one of the cans.
"Tell him, GoGo," Honey said to her friend.
"Stop whining. Woman up." GoGo replied.
"I'm fine!" Hiro assured them.
"What do you need, little man?" Tadashi asked him. "Deodorant? Breath mint? Fresh pair of underpants?"
"Underpants?" Teresa questioned as she and the others laid the cans against the back of the room. "Wasabi, that's just weird."
"Hey, I come prepared." Wasabi shrugged.
"Even I can tell you that's weird," Peter said as he raced in and saw them.
"You made it. What kept you?" Tadashi asked.
"Sorry, something...shocking came up." Peter apologized. "Happy to see I didn't miss the presentation."
"I haven't done laundry in six months," Fred told them, getting back to the underpants. "One pair lasts me four days." He then took a seat on the stand. "I go front, I go back, I go inside-out. Then, I go front to back."
Wasabi gaged, holding in the disgust to that revelation. GoGo looked unimpressed, whilst the rest had a more disturbing look.
"Wow. That is both disgusting and awesome." Tadashi admitted to him.
"Don't encourage him," GoGo tells him.
"To be fair, I don't get that much time to change clothes," Peter admitted.
"That's a separate problem," GoGo informed him. "You don't smell what we smell."
Peter realized (only just now) that maybe running around the city in tights and immediately changing is not the best idea. Reaching down to his shirt, he took a quick smell and realized he needed to wash some of these backup clothes of his.
"You could have said something sooner," Peter told her.
"It's called recycling," Fred tells his friends.
"Next presenter, Hiro Hamada." A female announcer's voice called from the stand.
"I guess I'm up." Hiro guessed.
"Okay, okay, photo!" Honey called everybody in and they all huddled up. "Everybody say, Hiro!"
"Hiro." Everyone repeated as she took the photo.
"We love you, Hiro! Good luck!" Honey called as she walked off.
"Don't mess this up," GoGo said as she left.
"You're gonna do great," Teresa promised as she walked off.
"Break a leg," Peter said as he left.
"Science, yeah!" Fred cheered.
The group then took their place in the crowd and watched as Hiro walked up to the stage. He looked nervous as the spotlight shined down on him.
"Hello. My name is Hiro..." then there was some feedback, which didn't help him with his nerves. "Sorry. I've been working, on something's hat I think, is pretty cool." He then reached into his pocket, took his headband out, and placed it on his head. "I hope you like it." Then he reached into his jacket and took out one of them. "This is a microbot. It doesn't look like much, but when it links up with the rest of its pals..."
Then the containers burst open, unveiling them all to be filled with microbots. They made their way through the crowd of people on their way to the stage, where they were being called. When they reached the stage, they created a giant box with hexagon shapes inside.
"Things get a little more interesting," Hiro said, releasing the microbots from his palm and letting it attach to the others. "The microbots are controlled by this neutral transmitter."
Then he removed the transmitter, followed by the microbots all falling over and piling up on one another. Then he placed it back on his head and the robots came back together.
"I think of what I want them to do..." Hiro explained as the robots turned into a hand and waved. "They do it." Then he started to make them create a structure out of material. "The applications for this tech are limitless. Construction, what used to take people months or years to accomplish, can now be done with one person." He then appeared on top of the structure. "And that's just the beginning. How about...transportation?" He then walked off the platform, and the microbots immediately caught him. Then he started to move around the room, using the microbots as transport. On his way around, he hung upside down and high-fived his brother on the way. "If you can think it, microbots can do it."
Then he made his way back to the stage and created an escalator to bring him back down. Then the microbots formed a giant version of themselves for all to see.
"Microbots!" Hiro finally finished his presentation.
Everyone cheers and applauds as Cass cries and cheers out about her family. Everyone met up with Hiro when Peter's senses went off. He looked around and wondered what was going on. Looking through the crowd, he noticed someone staring at him. He didn't know if he was staring directly at him, or if he was looking at Hiro and his display.
"Alistair Krei," Hiro said, getting Peter out of his look and turning back to the others and seeing Krei was there.
"May I?" Krei asked, wanting to take a look at the microbot. Hiro gives him the one in the pocket and he looks it over. "Interesting. I want your microbots at KreiTech."
"Shut up!" Hiro said in shock.
"He's right," Callaghan said as he joined them. "Your microbots are an inspired piece of tech. Your microbots are an inspired piece of tech. You can continue to develop them, or you can sell them to someone who is only interested in his own self-interests."
"Robert, I know how you feel about me, but that shouldn't..." Krei was saying when Callaghan stops him.
"This is your choice, Hiro. But you should know that Krei has cut corners and has ignored sound silence to get where he is." Callaghan said as he eyed Krei. "I wouldn't trust him with your microbots. Or anything else for that matter."
"Hiro, I am offering you more money than any fourteen-year-old could imagine." Krei tried to persuade him.
Hiro looked between the two options he was being offered and thought it through. He closed his eyes and sighed, deciding to do the right thing. "Thanks for the offer, Mr. Krei. But the microbots are not for sale."
Krei was surprised by this and sighed. "I thought you were smarter than this." He then fixed his sleeve and looked at Callaghan. "Robert."
But then he started to walk off when Tadashi stopped him. "Mr. Krei? That's my brother's."
Krei then remembered he was still holding the microbot. "Oh, that's right."
He then gave it back to Hiro and walked off. Peter watched him walk off and was feeling something off about him. When he looked and saw that the man staring was gone, he decided to shrug it off as nothing.
Callaghan then handed a letter to Hiro, giving him the acceptance letter into the school. "I look forward to seeing you in class."
And with that, everyone left the showcase in victory. As Cass was inviting everyone to a victory celebration, Peter sensed something again.
"You good?" Teresa asked, seeing him stare off into space.
"Something's wrong," Peter muttered to himself.
"What?" Teresa wonders.
Then there was a giant blast of electricity, causing Peter and Teresa to cover their eyes and look to see something. What they saw was a giant bolt of electricity in the form of a human.
"Electro?" Teresa asks.
"Not really. Some new girl who stole his power." Peter explains to her.
"You better get going," Teresa said and Peter nodded, running off.
Electro sent off a blast of electricity, causing several students to run and abandon their stands and projects. "So... much...power!"
"Yeah, what's the safety voltage on you now?" Peter asked, getting her attention.
"Max Dillon was stronger than he thought!" Francine informed Peter. "I have my own form of his electrical look, it seems!"
"Yeah, but you're now here attacking this school?" Peter asks as Electro sent a blast of her new power at him.
"You seem to protect this school, so I figured it'd be the best place to find you!" Francine admitted as she chased Peter around the showcase.
Peter landed behind a board and hid behind it and tried to catch his breath. "She does have a point. I gotta stop showing up around the school."
Electro then located him, but Peter was able to move thanks to his senses and get out of the way. Peter shot several webs to try and hit Francine, but it didn't do anything as she zapped through them, sending another blast at Peter.
"There has to be some way to contain her," Peter muttered, thinking of something as he looks around the place. "Wait, I'm surrounded by the best tech in school. I should be able to use..." Then he spotted the sports equipment inside the water tank and got a thought. "That could work. If she doesn't blast me to death first."
"Spider-Man!" Francine cried as she flew around Peter, trying to shoot him down. "You can't escape me!"
Peter then stood above the container, shooting a web and pulling the man off the device. "Sorry, but your time is up on the bike." He then puts him down on the ground, trying to get her out of here. "Come on, Electro Rebooted!"
Francine then blasted Peter, causing him to leap into the air and got her to follow him. He broke into the ceiling and left a gaping hole he used to escape. Peter grabbed a container lid for the water tank and used it as a shield. Shielding himself from the lightning to give him a moment to put his plan into action.
Placing the lid on his feet, he stuck it there to leave his hands free and shoot the webs to the container. Francine watched the webs pass her, not noticing what Peter's plan was. He yanked the container and Francine only noticed it too late when she was encased in the water it would dull her powers due to the water and he lands the two of them on the ground.
Francine tried to break out of the water container, and Peter tried to keep the container closed. Looking around, he saw that somehow the two of them ended up on the other side of campus on their descent from the skies.
Peter panted and tried to pull himself together as he lay against the container, watching as Francine returned to a human form. He slid down and laid beside it as all of that extra energy left her, and some water fell out, giving her the space to breathe.
"And yet...after all do that..." Peter panted as he tried to cool his nerves. She got a good jolt here and there that caused his body to shake. "...still felt too easy."
Then he heard what sounded like alarms from across the whole campus. Looking over at Francine, not making the same way twice, he webbed the container to the ground, hoping that'll hold her for a moment.
"Stay," Peter demanded her as if he were talking to a dog. He then ran off and swung towards the alarms.
Back at the showcase, Tadashi and Hiro stuck around for a moment to talk alone. Tadashi was proud that Hiro was finally going to do something with his intelligence. But when they heard the alarms, they were a lot closer and ran over to see the place on fire.
"Are you all right?" Tadashi asked someone running past.
"I'm fine. But Professor Callaghan is still in there." She informed them before running off to get away from the smoke.
Tadashi was about to run inside when Hiro stopped him. "Tadashi, no!"
Tadashi looked back to his brother and over to the fire. "Callaghan's in there. Someone has to help."
Then pulling away from his brother, Tadashi ran inside the burning flames, his hat flying off in the process. Hiro ran over and picked up his brother's hat and looked at the building. Not knowing what he was doing, he took a step forward to run in.
But before that could happen, a giant explosion went off, consuming the whole building in flames. Hiro was shot back by the shockwave and hit his head against the pavement. When he opened his eyes again, he saw the whole building on fire and crawled his way up.
"Tadashi!" Hiro cried out for his brother. "Tadashi!"
What he didn't know was, just across from the nearby building, Peter has only arrived just as the explosion went off. He looked at the building and ripped off his mask, hyperventilating as he'd never before. Because he never has. He was left in fear and shock at what he witnessed what had just happened. His ears were ringing as everything felt silent to Hiro's cries of terror, trying to find his brother. There is no way Peter could have survived an explosion like that, let alone a human like Tadashi.
He was gone.
He couldn't save his own best friend.
