As the time for John's battle with Erika drew nearer, he had all his pokemon Training hard for the battle, and was even able to evolve Metapod into Butterfree. Taking out her Pokédex, Dawn scanned Butterfree and her Pokédex said, "Butterfree, the Butterfly Pokémon. A Bug and Flying type, It loves the nectar of flowers and can locate flower patches that have even tiny amounts of pollen. This Butterfree is a male and has learned the move Gust. It has also been caught by John." John smiled as Butterfree landed on his shoulder. John then said, "How's it feel to be a fully evolved buddy?" Butterfree told him, "Anything to help you win your battles." John smiled more as his Raikou walked up to him and said, "Your Pokémon friends all wish to assist you, it shows that they all trust you."
"I know Raikou. I know." John said as he gave Butterfree some Pokémon food. Ash, Gloria, and Dawn all smiled at how John cared for his Pokémon. Just then they heard crying, walking into the woods, John saw a young girl with Light Brown with a lavender ahoge. She wore Pink T-shirt, purple skirt, pink-ish sneakers and a brown Backpack. He knelt and asked, "Hello there." The girl opened her eyes and John saw that one was a Violet Color, and the other was Green. John then asked the girl what was the matter and she said her name was Kiki before saying, "My Pidgey was taken by a mean man. My Charmander tried to stop him… but his Primeape defeated him… I want my Pidgey back!"
Elsewhere, the Poacher chuckled and said, "It may be a Pidgey, but a Pokémon is a Pokémon." That was when a voice shouted, "Butterfree! Rattata! Tackle!" and that was when John's Butterfree and Rattata tackled the poacher, making the cage he had in his hands drop. John then shouted, "Carnivine Use Vine Whip to get that cage!" Carnivine obeyed and shot his vines and got the cage to him. John took the cage and opened it, freeing the Pidgey as it flew straight to Kiki as she, Ash, Dawn, and Gloria caught up to John.
"PIDGEY!" Shouted Kiki as the Pokémon flew into her embrace and Ash sent out Pikachu and Pikachu used Thunderbolt on the Poacher. The Poacher stood up and said, "You Bastards…" He then called out his Primeape. Gloria scanned the Poacher's Primeape and her Pokédex said, "Primeape, the Pig Monkey Pokémon, and the evolved form of Mankey. It becomes wildly furious if it even senses someone looking at it. It chases anyone that meets its glare. This Primeape is a male and knows Thrash, Rage Fist, Mega Kick, Seismic Toss. Its original Owner is Ash Ketchum of Pallet town." Ash and John were shocked before Ash looked at the Primeape and said, "Primeape it's me! It's Ash!"
"Shut it! Primeape! Use Mega Kick!" shouted the Poacher. Primeape charged forward to use the kick, but Ash Charged and tackled Primeape. Ash then said, "You stole my hat remember! Then you evolved and we became a team, then we partook in the P1 Grand Prix, you won. You then went off to train more." Primeape remembered it all before looking to Ash's eyes, he then teared up and hugged his former trainer. The Poacher was speechless as Pikachu got him with another Thunderbolt. Soon an officer Jenny arrived and her Partner Growlithe hopped out and held the Poacher down.
Afterwards, Officer Jenny showed John and the others all the Pokémon that the Poacher had. They ranged from Kanto and all the way to Paldea. In one cage was a shaking Litleo walking slowly to John. Dawn used her Pokédex to scan it and it said, "Litleo, the Lion Cub Pokémon. A normal and Fire type, when Litleo are young, female Pyroar will teach them how to hunt. Once the Litleo mature, they will leave the pride and set out on their own. This Litleo is a male and knows Ember, Tackle, Yawn, and Fire Spin." John knelt down and held his hand out. The Litleo sniffed it and licked his hand, John gently picked up the Litleo and noticed he was extremely malnourished. Looking in the cage the Litleo was in, he was sickened at the sight of a non moving Pyroar. He stood up and said, "Not to worry Litleo, I'll take care of you."
Later, John was making sure Litleo was eating properly as Officer Jenny walked up to Ash and said, "All the Pokémon that the Poacher had were all wild Pokémon. We're going to send them back to their home regions… my superiors think it might be best that Litleo stay with your friend." Ash nodded as a man and woman ran up to Kiki, she saw them and shouted, "MOMMY! DADDY!" She hugged them and Officer Jenny went into attention and saluted the woman as she said, "Detective Naegi, Madam." The Detective asked Officer Jenny what happened and Kiki told her what happened and how John and his friends saved her Pidgey.
Kiki's father bowed to them and said, "Thank you very much. I don't know what would have happened if our daughter was hurt." John smiled and said, "Not to worry about it. I was glad to help her out." That was when Butterfree looked at John and whispered into his ear. John smiled and asked Kiki, "Would you like my Butterfree?" Kiki looked at him and asked, "Are you sure?" Butterfree then floated over to Kiki and flapped her wings while giving off a soothing aroma.
"Are you sure John?" Dawn asked John, he nodded his head and said, "Yeah, it was his idea." Kiki looked at her mom and dad as her dad said, "Well… I suppose it wouldn't hurt." Kiki looked at her mommy with baby doll eyes, so she said, "Oh ok." Kiki cheered as John handed Butterfree's Pokéball to her and said, "Take care of my butterfree." The parents nodded their heads as Kiki hugged Butterfree. Butterfree then looked at John and said, "I will see you again, trainer from the other world. You have my word" John nodded his head as Pikachu said goodbye to Butterfree. John then had his other Pokémon say goodbye as well.
Soon enough it was time for John's Gym battle with Erika. Litleo sat on Dawn's lap with Ash and Gloria sitting with her as John stood on one side of the field and on the other side was Erika. She wore a Red Kimono with blossom flowers on it and Pokémon sleeping under them. Behind Ash, Gloria, Dawn and their Pokémon sat Kiki and her parents. Erika pulled out a Pokéball and said, "I hope you are ready for a fight John. You helped me get my gym back but that won't mean I'm gonna go easy on you." John pulled a Pokéball out from his own and said, "Good, I hate to win an easy fight." The referee then took her spot and said, "The battle between Erika the Gym leader and John The challenger from Pallet town will now begin. Each side will use three Pokémon. Substitutions are allowed and the battle will be over after all three Pokémon from either side are unable to continue. Trainers, call out your Pokémon!"
"Vileplume, please assist me!" Shouted Erika as she called out her first Pokémon. Pulling out her Pokédex, Gloria scanned the Pokémon and her dex said, "Vileplume, the Flower Pokémon and one of two evolved forms of Gloom. A Grass and Poison type, Its petals are the largest in the world. As it walks, it scatters extremely allergenic pollen. This Vileplume is a Female and knows Moonblast, Petal Dance, Sludge Bomb, and Stun Spore. This Vileplume has been caught by Gym Leader Erika."
"First battle in your evolved form. Let's go, SYLVEON!" John shouted as he threw Sylveon's Pokéball out and the Intertwining Pokémon appeared. Gloria was confused and said, "But doesn't John know Sylveon's weak to Poison attacks?" Ash smiled and said, "So? That didn't stop me from using Pokémon that had a type disadvantage. John just needs to watch out for Vileplume's Sludge bomb and Vileplume's Effect Spore Ability." The referee then shouted, "Battle begin!" Erika made the first move and she shouted, "SLUDGE BOMB!" and John said, "COUNTER WITH FAIRY WIND!" the two moves were used and collided in the middle. John then shouted, "Double kick! And watch out for the spores!" Sylveon charged forward and struck Vileplume twice, making her slide backwards. Then Erika shouted, "Petal Dance!" Vileplume obeyed and used Petal Dance. Scoring a direct hit, but it also made Vileplume confused. John told Sylveon, "Get in and use Draining Kiss!" Sylveon nodded and charged forward and struck Vileplume and got back her HP that she lost but was affected by Vileplume's Effect Spore and got paralyzed.
"Damn it." John said as Sylveon jumped backwards before Erika shouted, "Sludge Bomb!" as Vileplume shot the Sludge Bomb, John told Sylveon to dodge. Sylveon tried but couldn't, and she got hit by the Sludge Bomb, doing massive damage to her. John then pulled out a Paralyze heal and Sylveon was able to recover from the Paralysis. Then Erika told Vileplume to use Moonblast, when it tried, it hurt itself in the confusion. That gave John an opening and told Sylveon, "USE FAIRY WIND!" Sylveon nodded and used Fairy wind, striking Vileplume and sending the Flower Pokémon towards Erika, being beaten. The Referee shouted, "Vileplume is unable to continue, the winner is Sylveon."
John cheered as Sylveon joined him in his section while Erika recalled her vileplume before saying, "You tried Vileplume, take a rest. That was a tough first battle John." John smiled and said, "Thanks Erika. I was worried about how hard the Sludge Bomb struck Sylveon." That was when Erika pulled out another Pokéball and said, "This next one is from Alola as a gift from a fellow Grass type user, Tsareena. I need your assistance!" and the Pokémon popped out. Dawn scanned it with her Pokédex and her dex said, "Tsareena, the Fruit Pokémon and the final evolution of Bounsweet. A Grass type, This Pokémon is proud and aggressive. However, it is said that a Tsareena will instantly become calm if someone touches the crown on its calyx. This Tsareena is a female and knows Trop Kick, Energy Ball, High Jump Kick, and Acrobatics. Tsareena originates from the Alola Region." John looked at Sylveon and said, "Sorry Sylveon, but you need rest." Sylveon nodded her head and allowed John to recall her into her Pokéball.
Pulling out a second Pokéball, John shouted, "Gyarados! Let's GO!" as he threw Gyarados's Pokéball. The Atrocious Pokémon roared as Tsareena felt a little intimidated. That was when John and Gyarados both glowed like before Gyarados looked like he mega evolved. Erika was shocked but the referee said, "Battle begin!" and that got her focused again. John shouted, "IRON TAIL!" Gyarados obeyed and charged forward as his tail got a metallic look on it. Erika told Tsareena to dodge it and use Energy Ball. Tsareena dodged successfully and with Gyarados being so close, Energy Ball was able to score a direct hit. John groaned as he felt it too and that made Ash say, "It's official, John and Gyarados also have a battle bond." Dawn and Gloria looked at him as Litleo was in awe at the battles. John shook the pain off and shouted, "GYARADOS! STONE EDGE INTO IRON TAIL!" Gyarados obeyed and used both moves, Tsareena dodged the Stone Edge, but was open to a hit from Gyarados's Iron Tail, making her slide backwards.
"You okay Tsareena?" Erika asked her Pokémon. Tsareena gave her a head nod and Erika smiled and said, "Alright then, time to use it." She then pulled out a bracelet and placed it around her wrist. Ash and John both recognized it and what she was putting in it, a Grassium Z-Crystal. Erika then pressed it and made a pose as she said, "Grass gives us strength." as Tsareena also did the same pose as her. John shouted, "Gyarados Get ready!" Gyarados nodded and got ready.
"TSAREENA! USE BLOOM DOOM!" Shouted Erika. Tsareena used the move and the power was heading to Gyarados. But John Shouted, "STONE EDGE AND HYDRO PUMP TO BLOCK IT!" Gyarados obeyed and used both attacks at the same time and all three moves collided in the middle, making a large black cloud appear, covering the entire field. Erika and Tsareena hoped they made contact. But John didn't groan so he knew Gyarados was safe, so he took the initiative and shouted, "THUNDERBOLT!" Suddenly, a bolt of lighting appeared and struck Tsareena and gave her quite the shock until there was a second explosion and Tsareena fell to the ground. She tried to get up, but she soon fainted, making the referee call the second battle for John. John cheered again as Gyarados changed back and Erika recalled Tsareena to her Pokéball.
"That is a powerful Gyarados you have there john." Erika said to him. John smiled and recalled Gyarados into his own Pokéball. He then said, "Thanks, I was worried that I would have lost that round." Erika smiled as she took her final Pokéball out and said, "Final one. Brambleghast! HELP ME OUT!" Shouted Erika as she threw her Pokéball and a Tumbleweed looking Pokémon popped out. John pulled his Pokédex out and scanned the Pokémon. His dex said, "Brambleghast, the Tumbleweed Pokémon and the evolved form of Bramblin. A grass and Ghost type, It will open the branches of its head to envelop its prey. Once it absorbs all the life energy it needs, it expels the prey and discards it. This Brambleghast is a Male and knows Phantom Force, Energy Ball, Shadow Sneak, and Leaf Storm. Brambleghast Originate from the Paldea Region."
"Paldea huh, interesting." John said as Rattata popped out of his Pokéball and jumped up and down as he wanted to fight next. John knelt and asked, "You sure Rattata?" Rattata nodded his head. John chuckled and said, "ok then, let's show him what you learned." Rattata nodded and dropped down as he thought back to John's training. John trained Rattata against Persian and Sylveon. His speed increased and he even learned new moves. Back in the battle. Erika had her Brambleghast make the first move and she said, "should be easy Brambleghast, use Energy ball!"
Brambleghast obeyed and shot an Energy Ball at Rattata. But John smirked and said "Dodge." Rattata jumped up high, shocking Brambleghast. John then shouted, "SHADOW BALL!" Rattata obeyed and shot a Ball of shadows at Brambleghast, but Erika managed to get him to dodge it. Dawn smiled as she also helped with training John's Rattata with her Mamoswine. John then shouted, "Shadow Ice Ball!" Rattata nodded and fired a Shadow Ball before hitting it with an Ice beam. The combined attacks struck Brambleghast hard and sent him rolling backwards and Erika getting a shock.
'He… he combined moves? That's impressive.' thought Erika before she shouted, "PHANTOM FORCE!" Brambleghast jumped up and disappeared as Ash looked up the move she just shouted and he said, "oh crap, Phantom Force is a move that The user vanishes somewhere, then strikes the target on the next turn. This move hits even if the target protects itself." Gloria looked at the field and said, "So Rattata is in trouble." John knew Phantom Force well and got an idea. He shouted, "Rattata! Use Ice Beam! SHOOT THE GROUND!" Rattata nodded and used Ice Beam on the ground, shooting around him and even hitting Brambleghast.
"He hit Brambleghast?!" Shouted Erika as Brambleghast then struck Rattata and the two Pokémon jumped back from each other. John and Erika shouted, "ENERGY/SHADOW BALL!" Rattata and Brambleghast fired their respective attacks and like before the moves met in the middle, but Erika said, "LEAF STORM!" Brambleghast obeyed and used Leaf Storm, striking Rattata and sending him sliding backwards. John caught Rattata before he slid into a wall. John looked down and saw Rattata was heavily hurt.
"You okay buddy?" John asked Rattata. The Mouse Pokémon looked at him and nodded his head before fainting. John recalled Rattata as the Referee said that Brambleghast won that round. Ash was shocked and said, "I think that was the first time one of his Pokémon fainted…" Dawn nodded her head as he had Rattata go into his Pokéball and said, "Take a nice rest buddy. Sylveon, come back out!" as he threw her Pokéball. Sylveon came back out, ready to battle. John shouted, "Use FAIRY WIND!" Sylveon obeyed and used Fairy wind, striking Brambleghast hard and sending him into the stand where Erika was and that was it.
"Brambleghast is unable to continue, Sylveon is the winner, which means that the battle goes to John of Pallet town!" John cheered as he caught Sylveon and called back out Rattata and Gyarados and told them they won as he healed Rattata. Erika recalled Brambleghast and said, "Thank you for your assistance." She then walked up to John and said, "I must say, that was an amazing battle, using two Pokémon with the type disadvantages." John smiled and said, "Well I knew my team could do it." Erika smiled and was about to hand John his rainbow badge when LT. Surge ran in and said, "Hey kid!"
"Lt. Surge?" John asked as Ash, Dawn, and Gloria joined them as Lt. Surge got to them. He then said, "I forgot to give you your badge." Lt. Surge then handed John a Thunder Badge as he said, "What happened after the battle made me forget until a while ago so I came here to give you that badge." Checking his badge case and realized that he was in fact missing the Thunder Badge. John smiled and said, "Thanks Lt. Surge." John then shook Lt. Surge's hand before Erika handed the Rainbow Badge. John smiled and shouted, "OH YEAH! WE EARNED THE RAINBOW BADGE!" and Rattata, Sylveon, and Gyarados all cheered with him.
"A Vault?" Erika asked John after he explained things to her about what happened after his gym battle with Lt Surge. John then said, "Yeah, my friends and I are on a mission to save the world and so far every city we've been to there has been a vault near the Gym." Erika placed a hand under her chin and said, "Come to think of it, my Vileplume has been acting strangely lately. She's been hanging around this stump behind the gym." John stood up and asked to see the stump. Outside, Erika pointed to the stump as John's hand began to glow. Walking to the stump, John placed a hand on it and the stump moved to the side with a grind.
Seeing a ladder, John Climbed down as Arceus said in his head, "John, in this vault is a Past form of the Pokémon called Amoonguss. It is called Brute Bonnet. It is a Grass and Dark type. It knows Sucker Punch, Solar Beam, Sunny Day, and Body Press. Be wary of it, it may try to attack you." John nodded his head and got to the bottom of the ladder. Walking into a large room, he saw what he thought was an Amoonguss, when it turned around it was in fact not an Amoonguss. He called out his Charizard and began a fight with it. It swung with Sucker Punch, but Charizard dodge and used Flamethrower on it, getting a direct hit. John then told Charizard to use Steel Wing. Striking a direct hit, Charizard made it crash into the wall. John pulled out an Ultra ball and threw it at Brute Bonnet. Seeing it go into the Ultra Ball, he held his breath as it shook three times, letting it out as it dinged, meaning he caught it. Picking up the Ultra Ball, he saw his Pokédex update and it said, "Brute Bonnet has been added to your Pokédex. The Paradox Pokémon. A grass and Dark type, It bears a slight resemblance to a Pokémon described in a dubious magazine as a cross between a dinosaur and a mushroom. Gender Unknown, known moves are; Sucker Punch, Solar Beam, Sunny Day, and Body Press."
John smiled as he recalled Charizard and climbed out of the vault. Outside the Vault, John told the others about what he caught and Ash said, "Wow, can we see it." John nodded and called it out. Brute Bonnet looked at John and bowed its large head. Gloria was shocked as she said, "It looks like an Amoonguss." Then John said, "I know right? Arceus told me that it's a past version of it." Dawn was shocked and said, "I wonder what other Pokémon have past forms." John recalled Brute Bonnet and said, "Same. But now on to Fuchsia City and Koga for his Gym and the Vault near him." That was when Litleo nudged his head against John's leg.
"Oh hey Litleo, Do you wanna travel with me?" John asked after kneeling down. Litleo nodded and said, "Yes, I saw you battling and I want to get stronger." John chuckled and asked if Litleo wanted to wait before getting caught, but Litleo asked him to catch him there. John smiled and held a Pokéball to the Lion Cub Pokémon and Litleo tapped the button, going straight into it and getting a ding off the bat. John stood up and smiled as he held Litleo's Pokéball. That was when Ash said, "18 Pokémon bro, that's impressive." But John looked back and said, "17 Pokémon Ash. I gave Butterfree to Kiki, remember?" Ash then said, "Oh yeah, sorry." That was when Dawn said, "He's not wrong though, sure you gave Butterfree away, but that's your eighteenth Pokémon."
"I guess I can count it like that then." John said as he held Dawn Close. Dawn smiled and held him close. Soon John and his friends were getting ready to leave when Kiki, her mom and her dad joined them. When John asked what they were doing, Kiki's Dad asked, "We were wondering… could you take Kiki with you on your journey?" John was speechless and asked if he was sure and Kiki's mom said, "well we watched you battle and Kiki was in awe with your battling. She begged us to ask you to let her join your journey." John looked at Dawn, Gloria, and Ash and saw them nod their heads. John smiled and said, "ok, she can join." Kiki cheered and hugged her parents goodbye. John then told her parents, "We'll make sure she calls you when we get to every Pokémon Center." Kiki's mom smiled and kissed his cheek before thanking him. John chuckled nervously as Dawn wrapped her arms around John's arm and walked off with him as Ash, Gloria, and Kiki followed them as Kiki's parents waved her off on her journey as their Journey to save both worlds continued.
