After defeating Erika and getting the Rainbow Badge, John, Ash, Dawn, Gloria, along with their new companion Kiki Naegi were walking towards John's next Gym battle. They traveled along Route 16. When they stopped. Kiki was feeding her Pokémon, which consisted of her Pidgey, her Charmander, and the Butterfree John gave her. John smiled at her as she petted her own Pokémon. John then called out Rattata and sent him over to Kiki. Rattata walked over to Kiki. Dawn smiled as She watched her boyfriend help Kiki get used to traveling. When night fell, Dawn, Gloria, and Kiki were in one tent as John and Ash in the other.
"So Kiki, excited to be on the road?" Dawn asked as she brushed the young girl's hair. Kiki nodded and said, "After seeing John battle like that, I wanted to learn how to fight like him." Dawn smiled as Gloria said, "Well lassie, wanting to fight like him may be difficult. He may show you how to fight, yes, but his way will always be his own way." in the boy's tent, John said, "Kiki is a sweet kid." Ash smiled as Pikachu laid on the ground. Ash then said, "When it comes to Koga, he uses Poison-type Pokémon." John nodded his head and said, "Yeah, and I'm gonna use Garganacl as one of my four choices. Empoleon too." Ash nodded his head and said, "that leaves two more Pokémon you need to call out. I wouldn't recommend Carnivine though since Poison-type moves are super effective against Grass-types." John nodded his head as he thought about which Pokémon to use alongside Garbanacl and Empoleon.
The next morning, John and his friends packed up when a Doduo walked up to them and ate one of their Oran Berries. Gloria scanned the Pokémon with her Pokédex and it said, "Doduo, the Twin Bird Pokémon. A Normal and Flying type, the brains in its two heads appear to communicate emotions to each other with a telepathic power. This Doduo is a Male and knows Peck, Quick Attack, Fury Attack, and Leer." Gloria then offered it another Oran Berry, which it happily took and ran off. Gloria smiled as did Ash while he looked at Gloria. John elbowed his brother and said, "Just ask her out already." Ash rolled his eyes before they went on their way.
As they walked, Kiki looked around as she had her Pidgey on her shoulder. John asked Kiki how she was enjoying her new journey. Kiki told him, "I'm having lots of fun. I can't wait to get more Pokémon. John smiled and said that he would help her when she needed help. Soon they took a break for lunch when a Heracross Swooped in and stole some food. John shouted, "HEY! GIVE THAT BACK!" and had his Charizard fly after it. As Heracross flew away, John shouted, "FLAMETHROWER!" Charizard shot that move that John shouted at the Heracross and it went down. Landing near the Heracross and scanned it with his Pokédex. His Pokédex said, " Heracross, Single Horn Pokémon. A Bug and Fighting type, It loves sweet nectar. To keep all the nectar to itself, it hurls rivals away with its prized horn. This Heracross is a male and knows Aerial Ace, Megahorn, Brick Break, and Close Combat." John walked over to the Heracross and asked, "Why did you steal our food?"
"I needed it to get my mate back. Some nasty Pokémon took her and I needed to gather food for them." Said Heracross as Ash and the others arrived. John realized that the Heracross was a good Pokémon so he offered to help him out. Ash asked John what happened and John filled his friends in on what happened. Gloria and Dawn were shocked as Kiki walked up to the Heracross and gave him more food. John then told them his new plan.
Later, Heracross arrived at his home where his wife was and the two Pokémon that had his wife captive. The Pokémon, a Vigoroth and Scrafty, stood there with Heracross's mate. Heracross dropped off the food and said, "Here's the food, let her go now." Vigoroth chuckled and said, "This isn't clearly enough food. Get us more." Heracross growled and said, "You said one more grab was enough and I did it!" Scrafty backed Vigoroth up and said to get more food.
"THUNDERBOLT!" Shouted John, two bolts of lighting struck the Vigoroth and Scrafty and sent them backwards, which allowed for Ash's Infernape to grab Heracross's mate and get her to safety while Gloria and Dawn sent out Corviknight and Buneary. Vigoroth and Scrafty were angry and charged at them as Gloria shouted, "CORVIKNIGHT! USE BRAVE BIRD ON SCRAFTY!" While Dawn shouted, "Buneary! Use Ice Beam into Dizzy Punch on Vigoroth!" their Pokémon obeyed and used the moves they were told, scoring direct hits on both wild Pokémon. Gloria and Dawn then had their Pokémon do more damage to them until Vigoroth and Scrafty were too weak to resist.
"Ready Gloria?!" Dawn asked her partner, who said, "Ready Dawn!" The two then pulled out one Pokéball each and shouted, "POKÉBALL, GO!" and threw them at the wild Pokémon. The Pokéballs struck the two wild pokémon and they went inside. Three shakes and a Ding later, Gloria and Dawn were happy and picked up their pokéballs before shouting, "ALRIGHT! WE GOT VIGOROTH AND SCRAFTY!" Corviknight and Buneary also were happy for their trainers. John and Ash both smiled as Heracross and his mate, a female Ariados, were reunited. Ariados walked up to them and said, "Thank you for saving me".
"No worries Ariados. Happy to help." John said to her. Dawn and Gloria then called out their new Pokémon and scanned them. For Gloria, her Pokédex read, "Scrafty, the Hoodlum Pokémon, and the evolved form of Scrappy. A Dark and fighting type, While mostly known for having the temperament of an aggressive ruffian, this Pokémon takes very good care of its family, friends, and territory. This Scrafty is a male and knows Brick Break, Scary Face, Beat Up, and High Jump Kick. This Pokémon has a Sassy Nature." For Dawn's Pokédex, it said, "Vigoroth, the Wild Monkey Pokémon, and the evolved form of Slakoth. A normal type, Its stress level rises if it cannot keep moving constantly. Too much stress makes it feel sick. This Vigoroth is a Male and knows Focus Punch, Fire Punch, Aerial Ace, and Hammer Arm. This Pokémon has a Sassy Nature."
"Way to go ladies!" John said with a smile. Gloria and Dawn both smiled and Dawn kissed John while Gloria kissed Ash's cheek. Ash blushed as Vigoroth shouted, "NO WAY! THERE IS NO WAY I GOT CAUGHT!" Then Scrafty stomped his foot as he said, "YEAH! WE DEMAND A REMATCH!" Then John said, "HEY! You two were caught fair and square so SUCK IT UP AND DEAL WITH IT!" Vigoroth and Scrafty decided not to argue and kept quiet. Later, John and the others called out all their Pokémon and settled down. Vigoroth and Scrafty were given food but chose to eat away from the others. Buneary and Scorbunny walked over to them and tried to get them to join, but the two new Pokémon refused. Dawn and Gloria called their Bunny Pokémon back as they ate.
The next morning, the group arrived at the bike shop to get each of them a bike. When they got in, there were four bikes left, one of them having two seats. When John asked how much for all three bikes, the owner said, "3000 Pokedollars… each." John, Ash, Gloria, Dawn, and Kiki were all speechless at the price. But the owner said, "But I am willing to give them to you on the condition you help me with a little problem I've been having. A wild Snorlax has been eating my berry bushes I keep in the back. I need those berries to get extra money to buy more bikes. Take care of it, and these Bikes are yours to ride along Route 17." John smiled and said, "consider it taken care of."
Few minutes later, the Snorlax walked towards the berry patch as John and his Pokémon laid in wait while he scanned it with his Pokédex. He scanned Snorlax and his Pokédex read, "Snorlax, the Sleeping Pokémon. A normal Type, It stops eating only to sleep. It doesn't feel full unless it eats nearly 900 pounds a day. This Snorlax is a Male and knows Giga Impact, Sleep Talk, Hammer Arm, and Belch. This Pokémon has been caught by Trainer Kenny." John was confused so he decided to follow the Snorlax after it took some berries. Following it, John and his team of Grotle, Charizard, Empoleon, Garganacl, and Litleo saw Snorlax reach Kenny dressed in Team Hell's commander's clothes.
"Good snorlax, put them with the rest." Kenny commanded his Snorlax. Empoleon was angry and asked John, "Permission to Hydro Cannon his ass?" John looked and said, "No, Hydro cannon on Snorlax." Empoleon grumbled but did what John said and shot a Hydro Cannon at Snorlax, sending him into the cliff face, and catching Kenny off guard. Looking where the Hydro Cannon came from, Kenny saw John and his Pokémon as John shouted, "GROTLE THUNDERBOLT ON SNORLAX!" Grotle obeyed and shot a Thunderbolt at Snorlax, scoring a direct and critical hit on him.
Kenny recalled his Snorlax and growled at John and his team. Kenny then said, "I should have known you would be here with the Empoleon you stole from me." John took a step forward and said, "I didn't steal Empoleon from you, you lost him when you cheated to try and get Dawn, now I see you wearing the uniform of the team I've faced in the past. To say I'm surprised at you is to say the least." Kenny chuckled and called out a new Pokémon to his team. Scanning it, John's Pokédex said, "Sawk, the Karate Pokémon. A fighting type, The karate chops of a Sawk that's trained itself to the limit can cleave the ocean itself. This Sawk is a male and knows Brick Break, Thunder Punch, Close Combat, and Zen Headbutt. This Sawk has the Adamant Nature and was caught by trainer Kenny."
Putting his Pokédex away, John shouted, "GROTLE USE ELECTRIC LEAF! CHARIZARD FLAMETHROWER! EMPOLEON FLASH CANNON! GARGANACL ROCK BLAST! LITLEO USE FIRE SPIN!" The five Pokémon with John obeyed and used the move they knew that John said. Kenny simply said, "Jump." and After Sawk jumped, Kenny shouted, "THUNDER PUNCH ON EMPOLEON! THEN CLOSE COMBAT ON GARGANACL AND BRICK BREAK ON GROTLE! ZEN HEADBUTT ON CHARIZARD AND THUNDER PUNCH ON LITLEO!" Sawk obeyed and dropped down, striking fast on all of John's Pokémon. Striking all five and sending Litleo into a tree. John was speechless as he thought, 'I never even saw Sawk land, Kenny must have trained Sawk's speed stat' that was when Sawk appeared in front of him before Kenny said, "Thunder Punch him." Sawk then struck John with a Thunder Punch and also sent John into a tree. Kenny smirked as John stood up slowly and said, "Ready to give up?" John looked at Kenny and said, "Not even close…" Kenny smiled more and said, "Sawk, use Brick Break on John's head, smash it open." Sawk obeyed and was about to strike John.
As John braced himself, he heard Sawk get hit and sent into the cliff face. Looking where he was saved from, he saw Sylveon standing next to him. John smiled and said, "good. USE FAIRY WIND!" Sylveon obeyed and struck Sawk with a powerful Fairy Wind. Kenny recalled Sawk and sent out another Pokémon. John scanned it with his Pokédex and it said, "Revavroom, the Multi-Cyl Pokémon. A Steel and Poison type, It creates a gas out of poison and minerals from rocks. It then detonates the gas in its cylinders—now numbering eight—to generate energy. This Revavroom is a male and knows Gunk Shot, Shift Gear, Flash Cannon, and Poison Jab. This Revavroom has a Serious Nature and was caught by trainer Kenny."
Smirking, John simply snapped his fingers and Charizard flew over head and struck Revavroom with a Flamethrower, getting a Critical strike on it. Growling in Anger, Kenny was about to send out another Pokémon when he got hit by an Ice Beam from Dawn's Buneary. Dawn walked up to Kenny and said, "I can't believe you Kenny, you're working for a criminal organization. I don't even know you anymore." Kenny scoffed and said, "Oh please, you and your friends need to let Team Hell just do their thing." John walked up to him and said, "That is something I will never let happen." That was when a smoke bomb was dropped and covered the area. Coughing as Charizard flapped the smoke away, John saw Kenny was gone and he growled.
Later, John and the others told Officer Jenny about what happened and she had an officer stationed at the owner's Berry yard to make sure Team Hell wouldn't take any more. The owner thanked them for their help and gave them the bikes as he promised. John smiled as he helped Kiki get on her seat as the others got on their bikes before getting onto Route 17 to go to the next City and John's Next Gym Battle. As they rode their bikes, Kiki was having a fun time riding the bike as John made sure she was safe. Dawn rode next to them as Ash and Gloria rode behind them until they all got to the end of Route 17 and onto Route 18.
After putting their bikes away, the group walked along Route 18 and got into view of Fuchsia City. John smiled and said, "Soon we will have the soul badge and maybe a new friend. Ash, Dawn, Gloria, and Kiki all smiled too while walking towards Fuchsia City. John looked at the map and saw another Vault by the gym and a Pokémon he never saw before. They then got to the Pokémon Center of Fuchsia City. John took Kiki in to have Kiki call her parents. Dawn went with them as Ash and Gloria walked around Fuchsia City. Ash then worked up the courage to hold Gloria's hand.
Meanwhile, John and Dawn waited as Kiki talked to her mom and Dad. John wrapped an arm around Dawn and that was when Ash and Gloria came back. They sat at the table John and Dawn were at as John said to them, "I know what Pokémon I'm gonna use against the Gym Leader." Ash and Gloria smiled and patted his back as Dawn said, "Good luck honey." John smiled and walked towards the gym with his friends' support behind him.
