Chapter One

Caroline POV

The weather was always my favorite this time of year. The trees were showing their true colours and shedding their leaves. The harvest was in full swing.

But this year was different. This year the Forbes family was uprooting their lives and moving to a new village to begin again after my father determined no man was "good enough for his daughter" in our current village.

Because of course, at the age of 17, I must begin looking for a husband. I scoffed at the thought. I didn't care to have a husband. To dote on him. Follow him unconditionally. Im what my parents liked to call a free spirit and they cursed the gods for that fact everytime i spoke out of turn. Which was often.

I hated that we were to move. This is where I was born, where I grew up playing in the grain fields and washing clothes in the stream. Safe to say I wasn't happy. And i didn't feel the need to keep that to myself.

"Father, I do not understand! Why must be move to a new village? Our village is perfectly fine. I know everyone here and they know me. What could another village possibly have to offer us?" I asked father while we packed our belongings in the cart.

William Forbes was not a man to coddle. Not my mother, and not me, his only daughter. It was never said , but i knew that part of the reason father was so harsh with me was because he wanted a boy, an heir. Instead he got me. An outspoken girl with a mind of her own.

"it is not your duty to question why, Caroline. I say we must move and we must move. No questions. That is the end of it." He said, coming out of the hut with the last of their meager belongings.

"but father-"

"Caroline Forbes I said that is the end of it! There are no suitable husband's here for you. They've all watched you grow up into the foolish temperamental woman you are and no one would trade even a goat to marry you. If you must know why we have to move, then you are to blame. We must look elsewhere for a husband for you to marry and mind for, and you will obey." He had walked closer during his speech and by the end he was right in my face.

I looked to the ground. I knew that face. I knew if i continued on with my questioning there was a lashing in my very near future.

"Yes father," I murmured.

Father scoffed, "stupid girl," he whispered as he turned away.

I quickly wiped away the tear that had fallen. Was it so hard for him to just love me like a father should a daughter? But after year upon year of lashings and beatings, i had given up hope.

"You shouldn't question your father, sweetheart. Nothing good can ever come of it. Just mind your words and keep your head down. The village is 2 days ride from here. We've sent word ahead and the chief of the village is expecting us. We should not leave Chief Mikaelson waiting," Mother said.

"Elizabeth, enough talk. She will not listen, stubborn chit. Into the cart, the horses are ready."

I took one last look at our village and climbed into the cart
