Chapter One: The Big Kaboom

Faith Lehane was making the rounds in Los Angeles, California. The moon shone brightly and the night air was cool. It was a boring night. She staked a couple of vampires. Nothing too big. She made her way to a local bar and decided to take the rest of the night off. Faith walked into the bar and looked around. There were tables all around her full of drunk people. The floors were dirty and the lights were dim. Faith walked to the bar and sat at an empty bar stool.

"Hey Patrick, give me a beer please."

"On it." Patrick said and handed her the usual.

Faith sipped on her beer and some drunk guy sat next to her. She rolled her eyes at him and ignored him. The guy was tall, dirty, and wore a large coat. He had on a cap and slurred his words. Faith pushed him off and he talked back. Patrick made his way over to him and said,

"Alright Mr. Flirt With Every Girl, it's time to get a cab."

"I'm not done." The drunk guy said.

"Yeah, ya are." Faith insisted.

Security came over and took him away. Faith was grateful for Patrick. He was always looking out for her. Faith smiled at Patrick and handed him an extra tip.

"Thanks for the help." She said and he nodded.

Faith continued to drink her beer in peace. After she was done, she paid her bill, and went home. Faith opened the main door and checked her mail. The mail was mainly advertisements. Faith sighed heavily and walked upstairs. She got to her door and unlocked it. Home sweet home, she thought. She had lived in L.A for a few years now and decided that she needed a place of her own. Faith walked inside and closed the door behind her. She turned on the lights and hung up her keys. Faith tossed the mail out and walked into her kitchen.

She pulled out a hot pocket and heated it up. The microwave beeped and she pulled it out. Faith put the hot pocket on a plate and walked over to the mini living room. She turned on the television and flipped through the channels until she found an old black and white movie. Faith chuckled at some of the scenes and ate her dinner. She fell asleep on the couch with the television on. A commercial came on and it was so loud that it woke Faith up. She stretched and yawned. Faith picked up her plate and took it into the kitchen. She set it in the sink and walked back to her bedroom. It was only three in the morning.

Faith changed into more comfortable clothes and turned off the lights. She crawled under the covers and fell asleep. She had weird dreams. Faith woke up and the next thing she knew, it was nine in the morning. Faith began her morning routine. She brushed her teeth and showered. Her landline rang while she was in the shower. Thankfully the answering machine caught it. Faith got out of the shower and got dressed. Her answering machine beeped at her so she checked the message.

"Hey Faith, this is Megan! Thank you again for saving my life! Taylor and I are eternally grateful." The girl paused. "We are sending the money now. Let us know if there are any issues with the payment! You can call us back at this number: 213-574-0909. Again, thank you so much!"

Faith smiled at the message. Megan was a young girl that she saved while patrolling the alleys of L.A. She was getting paid to save people. She never thought she'd see the day, but it was actually happening. She checked her bank account on her phone and saw the money increase. Faith got out some food and ate her breakfast. After eating, she looked at her fridge. She needed to go grocery shopping. Faith grabbed her essentials and headed out the door.

She locked her door and walked out the main door to the building. Faith walked around the corner to the local grocery store and picked up a few things. She picked up some instant food and cigarettes. Faith paid for her groceries and left the store. She went back home. Faith opened her door and hung up her keys. She put her groceries away and opened her cigarettes. She went to the balcony and smoked one.

Faith stretched her legs and looked outside. The city was beautiful. The tall buildings and the amazing views. The people were alright. Lots of people needed help. Faith finished her cigarette and put it out in her skull ashtray. Faith picked up the ashtray and walked back into the apartment. She dumped out the ashes and put it back outside. She tidied up her apartment in the meantime. Faith was bored while she waited for the sun to go down. She checked on a couple of past clients as time went by. By the time she knew it, it was lunch time. Faith made some Ramen and put some vegetables in it. She also mixed mozzarella cheese in it.

She ate her lunch and looked at some magazines that she had subscriptions to. Faith decided to go on a mini patrol to hunt some demons. She grabbed a few weapons and walked out of the apartment. It was an easy patrol. Faith went to a diner for dinner. She ordered a burger and some fries plus a coke. Once she was finished, she paid the bill, and went on a patrol again. Faith walked around the areas where the popular clubs were. Some vampires picked up a girl and they were walking around town. Faith followed them.

There were three of them. There was a female vampire among them. Faith figured that they picked a female to join them to help them pick up girls. The vampires cornered the girl into an alley and pinned her down against the brick wall. She rolled her eyes and ran. She pulled the vampires off the girl and threw them across the alley. They all groaned and stood up. Faith stood in between the three vampires and the girl.

"You're not getting that girl." Faith told them and pulled out her stake.

"That's our dinner you're messing with." One of the males said.

"You're not getting dinner tonight." Faith said and lunged after the one that talked to her.

The female and the other male surrounded her. Faith used her legs and kicked them back. Faith pinned the male that talked to her against the wall and asked,

"How does it feel to be helpless?"

Faith staked the vampire. He turned into dust. The other two growled and pinned Faith against the wall.

"You're gonna die!" The female said.

"Been there, heard that." Faith said and kicked the vampires again.

That set her free. She went after the male and staked him. He turned into dust. The helpless girl just watched her in fear. She was in shock. The female tried to go after the girl again and Faith pulled her off of her just in time. She staked the female in the back and it turned to dust. Faith inhaled dust and coughed. She waved her hands and put her stake away. The girl was shaking. Faith walked over to her and asked,

"Are you okay?"

The girl nodded. "I think so."

Faith pulled out the girl's phone and put her number in it. "Please call me. I'll send you the bill."

"Bill? You charge people?" The girl trembled.

Faith shrugged. "I gotta pay the bills somehow."

The frightened girl smiled and nodded. "I'll send you some money." She paused. "What were those things?"

"Trust me, you don't want to know." Faith told her. "Call me, okay? Whenever you're in trouble."

"Thanks, my name is Cindy." She said and held out her hand.

Faith shook Cindy's hand. "You're welcome."

Cindy looked at her and asked, "Can you walk me home?"

Faith nodded. "Of course."

Faith walked Cindy home. It was a few blocks down, not too far from the club. Faith went on another patrol until about two in the morning. There were some demons, but no big names. They were simple. Then she went home. Faith turned on her lights and hung up her keys. She checked the apartment and locked the door. She changed into pajamas and crawled into bed. Faith continued to have weird dreams. She dreamt of her hometown, Boston. The dream told her that she was at home. There was magic in blue and green swirls all around her town.

Faith had a bad feeling. The magic circled around the town and built up. The magic swirls grew smaller in the center of town. It looked like the magic was going to explode. The swirls grew smaller and smaller, into a ball of magic. Then, a shadow figure stepped out of it and walked away. Faith couldn't see who it was in her dream. There was just a tall figure. A loud buzzing sound interrupted her dream. Faith opened her eyes and sat up in her bed. She wondered where the buzzing sound came from.

Then she realized it was her cell phone. She quickly grabbed her phone and looked at the screen. It was Rupert Giles. Faith squinted her eyes in confusion. Giles? She hadn't heard from him in years. Why was he calling her now? And at this time? Faith groaned and hit the green button to answer. She placed the phone at her ear and asked,

"Giles?"

"Faith, are you there?" Giles asked over the phone.

"Yeah I'm here Giles," Faith groaned. She looked at her alarm clock through blurry eyes. "It's five in the morning. What's the problem?"

"I have some important news." Giles told her. "A seer friend of mine just had a vision. You're needed in Boston. Can you get there?"

Faith groaned again. "In Boston?" That was weird, she just had that dream about her hometown. She was exhausted. Faith leaned against the headboard. "You need me there now?"

"As soon as possible." Giles insisted. "There's a time traveler there. We don't know why the traveler is there, but that it is here."

That was weird. She just had a dream about Boston. Was the dream connected? Faith wondered. A time traveler? She had so many questions to ask, but she had a feeling that Giles didn't have enough time to explain.

"Alright, alright," Faith said and hung up the phone. "I'll pack up and go."

"Thank you. Call me when you get there." Giles said and hung up.

Thankfully, she didn't have much. Faith still traveled lightly just in case something like this happened. She sighed heavily. She liked it here in L.A. She didn't want to leave, but duty called. Faith got up and brushed her teeth. She showered and got dressed. Her morning routine was short. She found her keys and wallet.

Then Faith packed a bag of clothes and grabbed her phone. She also grabbed her charger. There was a bag of weapons near the door that she grabbed as well. Faith took one more look at her home and said,

"It was fun while it lasted."

She threw her bags over her shoulder and walked out of her apartment. She closed the door and locked it behind her. Faith walked downstairs and out the main door. The sun was barely up when she found her car. Faith got into her vehicle and turned on the car. She threw her bag onto the passenger seat and put her phone in the drink holder. She turned on the radio and blared the music.

Faith headed to Boston and it was a long drive. She drove for hours before she finally arrived in Boston, Massachusetts. The sun had set and she needed to find a place to rest. She found a motel and checked in. This had to work for now. Faith threw her bags on the bed. She pulled out her cell phone and called Giles. Giles picked up.

"I'm here," Faith said. "As requested. Does your seer friend have any idea what this time traveler looks like?"

"No, she only saw a shadow figure," Giles responded. "We don't know what the figure is. Only that it is really powerful and used an immense amount of magic to get here."

"Okay, I'll start looking for the local demon bars and do some research. Maybe I'll find the point where the time traveler entered." Faith said. "I'll call you back if I find anything."

"Thank you," Giles said. "We'll keep in touch if she has another vision."

"Sounds good." Faith said.

She hit the red button and ended the call. This was going to be a long night, Faith thought. She grabbed her essentials and headed out the motel room. Faith decided to find the local bars and then go from there. There were a few local bars around her motel room. Faith talked to some locals and asked about where to find the demon bars. She got rejected a couple of times, but then there were a few people that talked to her.

"I'm looking for some out of the ordinary bars." Faith whispered. "You know, the ones that aren't so normal?"

"Ah you mean Freddy's." One of the locals said. "Go to Freddy's."

"Freddy's?" Faith repeated.

The local was a sweet old man who was covered up in winter clothes. He had a long, white beard and shaky hands. Faith smiled and asked, "Where do I find this Freddy's?"

"You go around the corner and behind the convenient store." The old man said. "They got some weird stuff there."

"Thank you." Faith said.

"Honey, you can ask me anything any time. I'm always here." The old man said.

"What's your name sir?" Faith asked.

"People call me, Gene." The old man said. "What's your name honey?"

"Faith." She said and held out her hand. "It's nice to meet you, Gene."

"Pleasure's all mine." The old man said, slurring his words. "But listen, you shouldn't go by yourself."

"Trust me, I'm stronger than I look." Faith said. "Thank you for your time Gene."

Faith walked around the corner and found the convenient store. She walked to the back and found the bar called, 'Freddy's'. She entered the bar and the bar fell silent. There were demons of all shapes and sizes. Some of the demons left the room. Faith figured that they knew who she was. A Slayer in a demon bar? Bad for business. There was a woman at the bar and she yelled,

"Hey, we don't serve your kind here!"

Faith walked up to the woman and there was a name tag on her shirt. The tag said, 'Zoe'. Despite what Zoe had told her, Faith sat down at the bar. Zoe was skinny with a pink dog collar on and ripped up jeans. Faith put her hands and said,

"Relax, that's not why I'm here."

"Then why are you here?" Zoe snapped.

"I'm looking for someone." Faith said.

"We don't talk about people behind their back." Zoe said and cleaned a glass.

"I'm just looking for a little help." Faith said. "This isn't good for any of us, trust me."

Zoe sighed heavily. "If I get caught helping you, I could get in trouble."

"I don't need much." Faith said. "I just need a location."

"Hey lady," a vampire behind Faith said had touched her shoulder. "She said she doesn't want to help you. Why don't you leave?"

Faith turned around in her chair. "Do you want to get dusted?"

The vampire growled and walked away. Faith turned back in her chair and looked at Zoe. "Please. Just one location and I'll leave."

"Fine," Zoe said. "There was a lot of magic on the outside of town." She paused. "That's all I can tell you."

"What direction?" Faith asked.

"South of Boston, near Thomas J Butler park." Zoe snapped. "Are we done here?"

Faith nodded. "Thank you." She got out of the bar and walked back to the motel.

It wasn't a long walk, but she needed her car to get to where she wanted to go next. Faith got into her car and turned it on. She looked up directions for the park and put it into maps. She drove to the park and the sun was about to set. Faith wanted to get there before she ran out of daylight. Faith found a parking spot and stopped at Thomas J Butler Memorial park. Faith walked around the park and found a black spot on the ground. Faith touched it with her hand. It was cold. Then she felt a hand on her shoulder and her eyes widened. She felt power. There was someone behind her.
