A Protective Family To Hold You Tight
Six breathed hard as she escaped the vessel she had been trapped in. Why had she come here after she had escaped Mono's true form? She had no idea.
She gazed up to see it was afternoon and she continued walking, keeping her yellow raincoat around herself tightly as she made her way off the vessel completely and onto solid ground. Keeping her head down, she didn't notice that she was entering a forest that looked dark and foreboding, her unfocused eyes only seeing the dirt and rocks beneath her feet.
Suddenly, a snap made her jump and she looked up, horrified to see two very tall people that towered over her much like the horrific human-like monsters she had escaped from. Baskets of apples, oranges, peaches, and blueberries were around them. Quickly, Six hid behind one of the baskets, but then quickly climbed up, slipping into the basket of yellow apples and huddling down so that the two wouldn't see her.
Her actions didn't go unnoticed though.
The woman smiled at the man. "That should do it," she said.
"Let's get these home then," the man said, using his magic to levitate the baskets and he followed his wife to their home. Six, still inside the basket of apples, perked up a bit at hearing about heading for a home. Maybe she could find a hiding spot to rest in before heading out again. She was rather tired from escaping that horrid vessel.
Feeling the basket being set down, Six stayed put, but then felt something grab her and lift her up. "Well, what a rather unusual being," the woman said, having used her magic to lift Six out of the basket.
The girl squirmed as she was placed in the woman's hands, trying to escape, but the woman held her securely. Six began to panic and let out a scream of fear, fearing the giant would hurt her. "Oh, my," the giant woman said, bringing the girl more into the light from the kitchen. "You're just a child."
Six was shaking fearfully, barely holding back a sob. The giant woman looked concerned. "How did you get all the way here?" She asked. "Humans that are your size never come here. Unless...," a look of horror crossed her face. "Sweetie, did you escape from...that horrid vessel?"
The little girl looked up at her and the woman waved her hand again, magic surrounding the girl. "Oh, my," the woman said, now sounding greatly worried. "No wonder you're so terrified of me." She gently set Six down on the floor. "One moment, sugar dumpling. Let this old witch work her magic."
The child looked up at her and could see a magenta fog forming from the witch's hands and a moment later, Six was taller, the top of her head reaching the woman's waist. "There," the witch said with a smile. "Now, let's see that little face."
She gently pushed back the hood on the child's raincoat and the nine-year-old looked at her in terror, which wasn't unnoticed. "Oh, sugar dumpling, don't be afraid," the woman said, gently brushing some of Six's black hair away from the fearful eyes. "I won't hurt you."
The door opened and closed and the man came in. "Ah, you found our little intruder," he said to the witch, smiling as he used some magic to bring over an apple to Six, who jumped and looked afraid to even tough the fruit.
"She escaped from the horrid vessel, my love," the witch said.
"Ah, that explains why she's looking for an escape now."
Terrified, Six turned to run, seeing some stairs and quickly running down them. Something moved nearby and the witch turned to see it was her two helpers. One being a small ogre who had a heart of gold and the other was a python who was very gentle. "Can you two go find her?" She asked, knowing the child wouldn't find a way out from the cellar.
The two moved to the cellar, finding the child in tears and sitting on the cold floor. The ogre gently helped her to her feet and held her hand to guide Six back upstairs while the python gently nudged Six's shoulder in encouragement. The child wordlessly let them guide her back to the kitchen where the adults were. The man knelt down and scooped Six up into his arms, holding her gently. "Shh," he said soothingly. "You're safe with my wife and I, sweetie."
She went limp from fear, but as the man rubbed her back soothingly, she began to calm down. "Do you have parents, sugar dumpling?" The witch asked.
Six shook her head. "Well, I think it's high time you did," the witch said, smiling.
"I agree, my love," the man said before looking at Six. "Looks like I'm a father of three children now."
The nine-year-old girl blinked up at him and he smiled gently. "Sorry, I guess we're overwhelming you a little," he said, his voice gentle. "Honey, why don't you get our new daughter settled and I'll get on dinner?"
"Sounds good, handsome," the witch said before accepting the child from her husband and carrying her upstairs, Six looking around and blinking as she tried to process things. The witch gently set the child down once they reached a bedroom that was decorated in a soothing purple color. "This will be your room, sugar dumpling. There's a bathroom connected to it."
Six looked up at her, looking overwhelmed. "Why?" She managed to ask.
"Because you don't deserve to be homeless, sweetie," the witch said. "By the way, I'm Susan, and I am a witch, but I am a good witch. My husband, Tom, is a magician. He won't hurt you either."
She again gently brushed the black hair away from the brown eyes that looked more cautious than afraid now. "What is your name, honey?" Susan asked.
"Six," the girl said.
Susan looked a bit confused before smiling gently. "That's your age, sweetie, though I think you're actually a bit older than that," she said, her tone gentle.
"No, that is my name," the girl said with a straight face. "Six."
The witch shook her head. "Named after a number," she said, not looking happy. "You need a real name, sweetie. Like...Isabella."
The child blinked up at her and Susan smiled. "Yes, Isabella," she said. "That's a much better name and you look like an Isabella too."
The newly-named Isabella looked up at Susan. "Why...are you being so nice?" She asked.
"Oh? You thought all witches and magicians were evil?" Susan asked in amusement, playfully but gently wiggling her fingers into Isabella's sides, making her jump and clap her hands to her mouth to hide a giggle. "Why don't you get cleaned up and I'll come get you when dinner is ready?"
With that, Susan headed downstairs and Isabella looked around before seeing two children come to the door. One was a bit older than her with blonde hair and the other was perhaps a year younger, also with blonde hair. Both had blue eyes. "There she is!" The younger one said, pointing at Isabella. "Told you the ents saw her."
"You did," the older child said, smiling before offering his hand to Isabella. "I'm Dylan. And this is my little sister Amy."
The black-haired girl gave an awkward wave. "Hi," she said.
Footsteps sounded on the stairs and the kids turned to see their father coming upstairs. "Dylan. Amy, I hope you two are being nice to your new sister, Isabella," he said.
Amy's eyes grew big with happiness. "I got a big sister!" She cheered and Dylan smiled too.
"And I get a new little sister. Cool," he said.
Isabella didn't know what to say, swaying a little on her feet. Tom noticed and smiled gently. "Dinner will be ready soon, kids," he said. "Dylan. Amy, let's give Isabella a few moments to collect her thoughts and get ready for dinner."
"Yes, Daddy," the two said before moving downstairs and Tom smiled at Isabella.
"I'm sorry if we're getting ahead of ourselves a bit, kiddo," he said gently. "My wife and I are very fond of kids and to see you in the state you are in is just heartbreaking."
"How...did Susan know I escaped the vessel?" She asked.
"She and I can sense disturbances, since we both have magic," he replied. "Plus the creatures down there have been kidnapping children from your world for years. Good to know we don't have to worry about them anymore. And with you being here in the giant's world, you're safe."
He waved a hand and some magic swirled playfully around Isabella, brushing against her neck and she giggled, trying to wave away the magic, which made Tom chuckle as the magic dispersed. "Well, I'll leave you be," he said gently. "Bring your appetite to the table when you're done washing up."
She nodded and he left, to which she decided that washing up sounded really good at the moment. It only took her thirty minutes to clean up and change into some warm clothes she had found in the dresser. She sat on the bed before laying down, sighing softly as it was very cozy.
So much so that she fell asleep.
Susan came upstairs when dinner was ready and was about to speak when she noticed Isabella had fallen asleep. Smiling, she went up to the child. "Sugar dumpling," she said, gently shaking the girl's shoulder.
The girl didn't reply as she was deeply asleep, to which Susan gently placed a warm blanket over the girl, brushing her hair aside and kissing the child's forehead gently. "Sweet dreams, my little Isabella," she said softly. "And welcome to our family."
A lot of things in this chapter, I know. :) Don't worry, Isabella will have time to settle in with her new family. :)
