Blue means Jill. It was her colour. The first time Alice and Jill Valentine meet was in a church infested with lickers and Jill was wearing a blue tube top and a black skirt. Blue had come to represent Jill to Alice. Carlos was black combat gear. LJ was a light brown for his jacket leather jacket and hat he always wore. Claire was red for the same reason. K-Mart was a cream colour. But Jill owned blue.
She doesn't know why she came to associate the colours people wore when they first met, she just did.
Blue is the colour of the sky and oceans. Always fluid and moving. Constantly changing and adapting. A rare beauty and calming presence upon a person. There is freedom in the sky a weightlessness that makes people want to fly to soar into the unknown. Similarly, the ocean is key to all life. The oceans and seas hide many hidden wonders and create a stable involvement for so much life to flourish.
People say blue represents sadness but to Alice blue represents Jill. Someone whom Alice could trust with everything. The good, the bad and the ugly. The one who protected her from the nightmares that haunted her after escaping Detroit. Jill was her symbol of hope and stability. Her protection and love. She couldn't fathom how anyone else could see the colour blue and think sadness.
So, when a purple figure jumped out of an osprey during the chaos of the Arcadia Alice started shooting. Why wouldn't she. Umbrella troops were pouring out of the sky and gunning down unarmed innocent civilians. What was supposed to be their second chance at life had very quickly turned into a life and death scenario.
It was only when Alice focused on the purple Umbrella soldier who vastly stood out in comparison to the all black combat gear of the rest of the soldiers that Alice realised who it was. Across the deck from her not even 20 feet away was Jill Valentine. The sight of her with the scarab pinned onto her chest as Jill actively tried to kill her made Alice hesitate.
And it was that hesitation that let her get separated from Claire, Chris and K-Mart. The three of them lost to the war happening on the deck of the ship. All alone Alice was targeted by ospreys and soldiers and try as she might even, she couldn't kill all of them.
The ospreys exploding sent her flying over the edge of the ship sinking down into the dark depths of the blue water. If Alice wasn't passing out, she might have laughed at the irony of that. The blue ocean she so often associated with Jill would be the thing to claim her after Jill just tried to kill her.
She woke up in a white room. A very bright white room. Seeming alone Alice took to feeling around the room looking for where the exist was. She only got halfway through her inspection before a light flashed on in the observation deck above her. And who other then Jill Valentine dressed in that purple catsuit was looking down at her.
"Project Alice why did you turn on Umbrella." Jill's normal soft and sometimes snarky voice is replaced with an eerie emotionless tone that sounds like it's more robotic then real. Then again given the scarab on her chest that may be closer to the truth then she likes to think.
"Jill." The name left her mouth as a breathless whisper before she could even contemplate the fact that Jill was here. That Jill was under Umbrella control. A part of her expected Jill to reply how she normally would. But all she got in return was that emotionless stare as she waited for Alice to answer the question. "Jill." She tries again a bit louder this time. "Is that you."
All she got in reply was a repeat of the question. Alice's eyes narrowed as she understood that it wasn't Jill she was dealing with at the moment. Someone else is pulling her strings. Instead of answering Alice asks a question of her own.
Not surprisingly Umbrella didn't like her ignoring the question and one moment Jill was looking down at her the next the window turned pitch black and a shrill like noise exploded through the room ricocheting around her head as the sound pierced her skull. Alice desperately clutches at her head to try and stop the pain. To cover her ears and limit the mind shattering sound from reaching her. The noise is so loud and deafening that she doesn't even hear herself scream. The high-pitched noise completely blocking that out.
Jill reappears when the sound dies out. Defiantly Alice glares up towards the purple figure as she asks her question. Alice doesn't answer once again and the noise returns. This time she drops to her knees. This process repeats time and time again. To the point, Alice can hear the horrific sound even when it isn't playing. Like an echo imprinted in her ears. Throughout it all Jill never looks sorry or remorseful at her actions. At Alices suffering.
How could she. Jill isn't the one in control. Even still Alice can't help but to associate the screech with Jill's presence. Jill who was once the person she sought comfort and happiness with became the bane of her torment. As the days passed and the torture didn't relent no matter how much she begged or pleaded. Alice came to understand why the colour purple represents power and ambition. That is all Umbrella was. No matter who was hurt or destroyed in order to achieve it.
Alice learnt why people associate blue with pain and sadness.
Blue represents water. Blue represents Jill. For those first few minutes after escaping Umbrella Prime hugging Becky close all Alice could really do other then think about the fact that Jill drowned. She left Jill behind to die in that facility. Guilt manifested so strongly inside her that holding on to Beckey was all she could do to stop herself from crying or being sick.
Jill was innocent in all this. Umbrella were controlling her. Making her do things she would never have done. Alice knew that. She knew that and yet she didn't do anything to help her. She left Jill behind once again. This time in the clutches in the clutches umbrella and when the facility blew and flooded with water Jill was caught in the crossfire.
This is what she believed until their snowmobile was thrown to the side as a submarine broke through the ice revealing that Jill had in fact survived the destruction of the facility. Whatever joy Alice felt at this knowledge was short lived as purple Jill was once again trying to kill her. Almost succeeded as well until Alice was able to get that scarab off of her.
Once it was off Jill came back to her. Helping her defeat Rain before the two of them passed out on the frozen tundra. The next time she woke up Jill was her Jill. Still dressed in purple but had none of the robotic actions or mannerisms. She also wasn't trying to kill her which Alice sees as a win.
After landing in Washington and listening to Wesker's drivel the two had separated it got washed and changed. Alice herself has changed into some far more comfortable than Umbrella combat gear. When Jill enters the room Alice doesn't turn to face her. She knows Jill was not responsible for what happened, but she can't forget that Jill was the one to torture her. To beat her near death and tried to crush her head in. She doesn't blame Jill, but she can't help the slight flinch she has when Jill sits down next to her.
"Are we going to talk about it." Jill asks sincerely scared and nervous of Alice's reaction to her. Alice unable to find her voice shakes her head. Silence settles between them for a few more moments before Jill speaks again. Paint tainting her voice and all Alice wants to do is take that away from her. But she still can't face her. Her mind was not yet ready to deal with the aftermath of everything. "I know I hurt you. Well... not me me... but that version of me... but I swear that wasn't me... I would never do that to you."
The sheer pain and fragility in her voice is so unlike Jill that even Alice has to look at her to make sure it is Jill sitting next to her. Except when she turns to meet Jill's broken graze only one thing really sticks out to Alice. "You're wearing blue." Blue means Jill. Her Jill. Purple was evil umbrella Jill. Maybe her brain can separate the two's actions by something stupid like that.
Jill jerks back a little at her statement. Her eyebrows furrow together as she tries to understand what Alice is talking about. "Yeah... it's all they really had that fits me."
Alice smiles softly towards Jill. "You suit blue."
A slight blush marks Jill's cheeks at hearing this. "Thanks. Are we-"
"We're good Jill. I know it wasn't you who hurt me." To prove her point Alice rests her head on Jill's shoulder sinking into the other woman's calming embrace. Jill wraps an arm around her waist holding her closer and resting her head on top of Alices. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too Alice. So much." Jill replies in a relieved and affectionate tone pulling Alice closer into her. Not wanting to be separated again from her.
Maybe blue means pain and sadness to others. But to Alice, purple is that colour. Blue means Jill. And that makes it the best colour around.
