The next morning, he woke up to the sound of Sharon's soft « mmmhhh » and felt immediately sick to his stomach. He opened his eyes, too worried not to look. She was lying on her side, a pink blindfold on and Andy kissing her neck. He was spooning her, his hand under the blanket, somewhere around the middle. She was starting to wake more, to moan more, to move more. Her hips were undulating in a very characteristic manner and it was starting to freak Rusty. « God, I love… » She started to say, her voice deeper than usual. « Baby, you know we're not home. » said Andy, holding her hips in place and moving away from her slightly. « Oh Rusty. » she murmured. « Yes. Keep your eyes closed and enjoy but just kisses today my love. » His mother smiled. She was refused what she clearly wanted, because of him, and she was smiling. A warm, serene smile. « Kisses are nice. » she stated, tilting her head to offer more of her neck to the man behind her.
After a few moments, the couple went quiet again. Rusty risked a glance toward them. Andy was running his hand in her hair, playing with it as much as caressing it and his mother seemed to have drifted off again. He caught the Lieutenant's eyes and felt the heat rise to his cheeks. « You can sleep a bit more if you want or we can go for breakfast. » murmured the older man, obviously not surprised nor bothered by his spying.
Rusty thought about it for a second. He was still a bit tired but felt restless. For once his mother was resting and she definitely could use the calm. He knew what a light sleeper she was. He also knew once awake Andy would not go back to sleep, he was like his mother in this regard. So he moved the blanket away and rose with caution, mindful not to make a sound. He grabbed last night's clothes and went toward the bathroom. Wanting to see if Andy needed to go first, he turned around. He was both surprised and not surprised by what he saw. Andy was up near the bed, gently caressing Sharon's face while tugging her in. He dropped a kiss to her head and said quietly: " we're going out for breakfast, text us when you're up." Sharon only mmhed before turning around and moving the blanket over her head. The gentleness of their interaction, the trust, the communication between them, it was all so new for him and so foreign. He couldn't remember a single time in his life when he saw his birth mother wake up smoothly, even less with a man. He remembered more being thrown out of apartments as a wake up call and waking up to puking noises. That was different. That was his life should have been. It took him years to overcome his hyper vigilant state and to understand his insomnia was mostly due to his fear to wake up in random places. He wondered a second if Gus would be that gentle if they were to wake together.
Once out of the room, he found it weird to be with Andy, especially in a hotel restaurant. He felt out of place. He felt… he felt … he had a hard time putting words on his feelings but the closest thing he could think of was dirty. A man about Andy's age with a much younger man, about his own age walked by them. A knot formed in his throat. He was about to find an excuse to forego breakfast when Andy, being Andy, started talking to them. "Go Habs Go!" He heard his step-father say, wondering what it meant. The two older guys started talking about hockey and how they were all going to see the practice session at 11am. Listening only with one ear, he was surprised to learn that the two were father and son and was even more shocked to hear Andy present him as his own son. Soon the conversation died and the group separate ways, Andy and the other dude exchanging phone numbers and planning on meeting at the arena.
He did not have time to say a thing about the lobby encounter that he saw Emily. He was about to wave to her when Andy put his hand on his arm, preventing his movement. The older man did not say a word but pointed his chin toward the young woman, and the man with her. She had yet to notice them, so enthralled in her talk. She was walking close, very close to a tall charming middle aged man. He seemed to be about 40-50 years old, salt and pepper hair around his temples. He was good looking, in a Justin Trudeau kind of way. From their spot, they watched their interaction: his hand on her back, her bumping their hips while laughing, them splitting their task to gather their breakfast. "I didn't know she was dating." Said Andy in a consparing tone. Rusty thought about it for a second, looking at the interaction between the couple. "She's not. Like mother, like daughter I guess…" . The other man just chuckled.
Finally Emily and her friend spotted them and they all gathered for breakfast. It was both super weird and very familiar, sitting around a table, Andy grilling the guy with seemingly inconspicuous questions, Emily smiling behind her mug. In a few minutes, they learned that his name was Adrien, that he was an engineer working on the maintenance of the stage and other equipment, something Rusty never even thought was a thing. He was French but lived in Montreal for about 15 years and was thinking about joining the Cirque du Soleil. He was divorced, his ex wife was wary of his nocturnal life but Rusty could tell there was more to it. He liked how Andy was focused on Emily while conducting his little investigation and when she seemed to have enough, he stopped pushing. It was something new too. Except Sharon, he never knew anyone who respected his, or other people, boundaries. Lieutenant Provenza was a great guy but he still had a long way to go in that regard.
They were nearly done eating when Andy's phone buzzed and by the goofy smile that graced his face, Rusty could tell that the message came from his mother. Sure enough, the older man excused himself and went gathering tea, fruits, some yogurt and a single pancake. He smiled to himself, appreciating that Andy made the effort to learn her little quirks. He still couldn't believe that Jack never did after 30 years of married life! By the time she arrived, her breakfast was ready on the table. She did not seem surprised to see Adrien. They all stayed with her while she quickly ate, discussing their plans for the day. Adrien had to go back to work and departed after kissing Emily on the cheek. A while later, they all gathered their belongings and it was decided that he would go with his sister and their mother do some shopping while Andy went to watch the Montreal's Canadians hall of fame and practice session. Outside their hotel, waiting for the couple to say their goodbye, he heard Emily sighed saying "Ohhh" in a dreamy voice. He turned around to catch a glimpse of Sharon and Andy hugging. Just hugging. They pulled back, his mother's hand on her lover's cheek. "Be careful. No crazy stories, Andy!" She blinked, amusement in her voice. "I don't know anyone at the local police, if you get in trouble, you're on your own!" Andy let out a falsely exasperated : "Come on, you know it's always because the Old Coot!" and received a "Yeah, yeah." and a soft peck in reply. He felt like laughing. It was light. It was so very different from what he knew all his life, and he appreciated it so very much !
