Old Wounds
Patti Brooks entered Herb's office, finding him engrossed in yet another phone call, this time centered on the US Olympic hockey team. The urgency in Herb's movements was no surprise to her, given the gravity of the situation.
With open tryouts already completed in several locations, the pressure was on to organize the final tryout in just two weeks. Herb faced a daunting task, and time was not on his side.
"I think I need to involve Claire in this," Herb declared, his words hanging in the air with a weighty uncertainty that cast a shadow over the room.
Patti cautiously interjected, her voice betraying her concerns. "Herb..."
Herb's gaze shifted from his desk to his wife, sensing her reservations. "You have doubts," he stated, acknowledging the gravity of the decision they were facing.
Patti chose her words carefully. "I have no doubt about Claire's abilities to assist you," she began, "but the emotional toll of such a responsibility... Are you sure it's worth the risk?"
Herb met her gaze with determination. "Yes. I need her, and it's been years since... since Caleb. There's only one way to find out."
Patti's concerns stemmed from past experiences. Claire had previously assisted Herb in coaching the University of Minnesota's boys' team, yielding impressive results. However, when Claire became involved with one of the players, Caleb Danvers, it led to heartbreak and turmoil within the team.
The fallout from Claire and Caleb's relationship had a profound impact, causing disruption and discord among the players. Robbie McClanahan, Claire's best friend, even resorted to physical confrontation with Caleb, further straining team dynamics.
Now, with Claire joining Herb in coaching the US Olympic hockey team, Patti feared history repeating itself. Despite Herb's strict policy against player-coach relationships, Patti remained wary of the lingering effects of Claire's past experiences.
Yet, Herb remained resolute, implementing stricter policies to prevent any of that from happening again. But Patti couldn't shake her apprehension, knowing the intense pressure and closeness of the Olympic environment could test even the strongest resolve.
Herb sat behind his desk, the weight of the impending decision pressing heavily upon him. He glanced up as Claire entered his office, her presence bringing a brief moment of respite from the mounting pressure.
"Claire," Herb greeted her, his voice tinged with a mix of seriousness and uncertainty.
Claire returned the greeting, her expression a mix of curiosity and anticipation. She could sense that something important was on her dad's mind.
"Your mother and I talked," Herb began, his tone measured as he carefully chose his words. "And I've, I mean we've come to a decision."
Claire nodded, her curiosity piqued as she took a seat opposite her father. She respected his insight and valued his opinion more than anyone else's.
Her dad continued, his gaze locking with Claire's. "Your ability to connect with people, to bridge gaps, and playmaking is unparalleled. I need your help to unite these players and fill in any other gaps we may encounter."
Claire's heart skipped a beat at her father's words. She had always admired his dedication to the sport and his unwavering commitment to his players.
Herb reached across the desk, his hand resting gently on Claire's. "You've grown into an incredible young woman, Claire," he said, his voice thick with pride. "I know you'll bring a unique perspective and invaluable skills to the team."
"Thank you, Dad," Claire said, her voice filled with conviction.
"Now, go tell your mother you love her and give her a hug." He added with a tender smile.
With a nod of understanding, Claire made her way out of her father's office
