The strange creature releases a powerful roar, stretching its long limbs out of the cocoon. With each step it takes, the ground shook. Its single presence caused a massive chaos. All sense of protocol and discipline were lost in the wake of the creatures. Now, they are filled with fear and terror as all the workers and scientists scrambled for the exits to escape.
The lights around the creature were flickering and the powers began to mess around. The creature's two massive hooked arms rose into the sky until they found their way to the first set of cables overhead and began slowly dragging them down into the pit. The sounds of creaking and groaning cables filled the air as the towers and braces attached to the cables began to snap and fail all over. The cables themselves also began to snap on occasion, leading to disastrous results in the immediate area. Massive cranes holding the cables up began to fall down from the pressure.
Knowing the disaster that will come, Dark turns towards her team. "Okay, change of plan, save anyone you can!"
They agree and Dark uses her magic to remove their disguises, and they rush off to save as many workers as they can. Dark saw the pieces of metal of the crane to fall and saw workers were running in that direction, and that they would be killed. Dark uses her magic to create a barrier that prevents the crane debris from falling down on them. This shocked the workers when they stopped and watched to see the debris being bounced off before looking towards Dark, still using her magic.
"Tomaranaide! Tsudzukete!" Dark yelled in Japanese. Don't stop! Keep running!
Understanding the situation, they all made a run for it, heading to the safety of the exit. Just then, Dark spotted a couple of men inside the crane's cabins. Dark yelled and extended her free arm to stop the cranes from falling in the pit, but they were struggling, due to the creature's strength being overwhelming.
"Guys! Save the men inside the cranes!" Dark yells out, struggling to keep hold.
Spider-Man swings over. "You got it, Dark!"
White Tiger and Iron Fist ran up the nearby cranes, jumping up to the cabin, breaking the windows and freeing the workers, before taking them to safety. Spider-Man swung at the last crane that was about to fall off the edge, and broke the glass, saving the man trapped inside before swinging them both to safety. Spider-Man brings the man to safety and checks on him.
"Are you okay?" He asked in concern.
The man nodded his head, "Hai! Arigatou gozaimasu!" The worker thanked and bowed his head in respect for the man that saved him.
Suddenly, the creature lets out another roar, causing Spider-Man to yell at the worker to run as they both try to make it to safety along with the others. Dark saw this situation and raised her free arm at the running figures of her team and the workers.
"Lacunae magicae!"
Soon, they all disappeared into thin air, as the debris fell on where they were running. Dark sighs in relief but is cut off when the creature lifts one of its limbs and hits the ground, sending a small shockwave. Dark almost lost her footing and debris was about to hit her until…
"Watch out!"
A man comes out of nowhere and pushes Dark out of the way, saving her before she could get crushed. The two rolled away and looked up to see the fallen debris. Dark turned to the man, who looked at her with wide eyes.
"Thanks." Dark could only say.
"No problem," The man said before looking up. "We have to leave before-"
"Ford!"
"Dad?!" The man yelled as he turned towards the catwalk to see his father, looking panic and relief to see him.
He was cut off when the crane that Dark was holding was suddenly dragged to the pit, and the cable line itself tensed and tightened, and Ford's eyes followed it as it led back to the catwalk Joe was standing on. Father and son made one last eye contact, and then it was over. The cable snapped before Dark could use her magic, and it bent the catwalk, sending Joe falling down beyond Ford's view as more debris came down in that area around Joe.
"Dad!" Ford screamed in terror.
He was halted from running to his father's aid by the sound of the creature releasing a powerful roar. Slowly, Ford turned around with eyes wide with a mixture of anger and fear as he saw the creature's arms rising up shortly followed by its head and torso. It was finally free from its prison. The massive creature took its first step outside of the pit as its two front claws came down like a pair of giant pistons smashing anything caught underneath as if it wasn't even there. Its two hind legs came next, each one looking similar to that of a hoofed animal, with two primary toes and rear facing knee joints. The two front legs supported its upper body as its rear legs moved forward crushing vehicles underfoot as Ford and Dark dove out of the way.
The creature only took a few steps and had covered over one hundred and eighty feet from the pit before Ford had to find a hazmat mask to cover his face. His breathing was labored and ragged from his racing heart and it was the only thing he heard as he watched the giant monster before him continue to trample the place, smashing the surrounding plant to pieces. Creating more earthquakes that caused some buildings to fall. Dark had to drag Ford into safety as the creature began to stretch.
Then, it opened its massive pair of wings which was previously tucked against its back. The wings beat heavily, with each one coming down on Ford and Dark like a heavy wave of water at the ocean during a storm. The impact was nearly suffocating, knocking the breath from Ford each time until it was high enough in the air where the pressure waves didn't hit as hard. Ford watched it fly away into the night, uncertain of how to wrap his head around all of this chaos.
However, his thoughts were soon replaced when he remembered his father. He quickly rushes over to the fallen catwalk with Dark following him. Ford moved through the debris, carefully not to put more weight onto it, or else he might accidentally crush his father.
"Dad!? Dad, where are you?!" Ford yelled, searching for his dad.
"Hey! Over here!" He heard Dark's voice.
He turned towards Dark to see her easily lifting up a fallen catwalk. Underneath it was his father. The poor man was hurt pretty badly, covered in bruises and with many broken bones that are fatal.
"Dad!" Ford rushes to his father as Dark tosses the catwalk away, allowing Ford to check on his father. "Dad…"
Joe was barely alive. His breathing was ragged and his blood was pooling out from open wounds. Ford stayed with his father's side while Dark did her best to stop his injuries from worsening until help arrived.
-This area is now under NATO military jurisdiction… All personnel must report to duty officers for debriefing.- Called an announcer over a loudspeaker before it was being translated into Japanese.
Hours later, rescue teams came to help the injured and find other survivors. It was tormenting in Spider-Man's eyes. They got many out but some did not make it unscaved. They were barely alive when they were rescued and were put in immediate care. Whatever that creature was, its power has no limits. And what's worse, it is still out there doing who knows what, probably destroying a city as they speak.
"Spidey." Dark's voice snaps Spider-Man out from his trance. "You okay?"
"To be honest…no…I'm not," Spider-Man said with dread in his voice. "We saved as much as we can but…"
"I know, Spidey. We tried our best. But the creature or whatever hell that was fast as we expected." Dark glares at the bodies being covered up. "But we need to focus. We have to figure out what we're dealing with."
Spider-Man nodded his head. "Yeah, and how to stop this." Spider-Man said in agreement.
The two heroes meet up with their teammates, helping the rescue team to find more survivors. Meanwhile, Dr. Serizawa stood among the wreckage, examining the damage that creature has done and looking over at injured men. It was a dreadful sight. Several workers were able to survive the onslaught but some were not so lucky as they were in critical condition. The giant monster's path of destruction was quite obvious to his discerning eye, and he could tell, even among all this debris, where the creature had stood and walked before taking flight to leave the area. While the survivors were taken to ambulances and other vehicles to be taken away to the nearest emergency medical units for examination and hopeful treatment.
"Dr. Serizawa!" Graham called to him as she jogged in his direction, avoiding the men carrying an injured man to the ambulance. Behind her was a tall African/American gentleman in a military attire.
"Dr. Serizawa!" She called again, approaching and laying a hand on his arm as he didn't respond to the first two calls. "Dr. Serizawa," she said more quietly this time, touching his arm slightly to finally get his attention.
"Captain Russell Hampton. Glad to find you sir," the captain said. "I've been briefed on your work with Operation MONARCH. Now I'm told your organization has situational awareness of our unidentified creature?"
Serizawa slowly looked over to him in silence.
"Is that right?" The captain asked again.
Again, Serizawa response with single nod of his head
"I'm here to inform you that we are now taking over operational authority from MONARCH. So I'm gonna need you to come with me. Is there any other personnel you need?" Captain Hampton asked.
Serizawa turned and looked around. Searching for the right people to join him. His eyes soon landed on both Joe and Ford Brody preparing to board an ambulance. Joe was hurt pretty badly with his head and neck in a brace with Ford looking out for him as best he could. Dark and her team were close by, helping the rescue team with the survivors to the medical areas, giving them proper treatments.
Knowing that he found the right people, Serizawa pointed across the way towards Joe, Ford, Dark, and her team and then looked back to the captain.
"Them," he said to the captain.
Ford and Joe were whisked away on a chopper heading out of Janjira towards the Pacific Ocean. Both Dark and Spider-Man were with them, being called by Serizawa to come with them. Iron Fist and White Tiger stayed behind and helped the people but will follow their tracking signal from the jet. While they were being transported, Joe lay in a medical bed with Ford leaning over the side trying to keep Joe calm and assuring him he'd be all right. The medical team were doing their best to keep him alive.
"Radial pulse is weak." Said the first medic.
"I'm counting 125." The second medic said.
"Shh… Shh… Dad," Ford said quietly to his dad, giving him comfort that he needs. "It's okay."
Serizawa looked on sadly, watching Joe and Ford interact quietly and carefully as Joe tried to speak. Dark and Spider-Man also watched. Dark used a bit of her magic to heal some of Joe's injuries, but he needs proper treatment asap. Soon, Ford reached out and took off the breather his father was wearing to let him speak.
"You were right." Ford to his father with guilt and shame. All this time. His father was right. That creature caused the destruction of the Janjira power plant all those years ago, it was the reason of his mother's death. And he didn't believe his father until it was too late. Now, his father lays there, hurt, and looking at him weakly.
"I'm sorry." He apologizes to him. Even though his words felt like it was not enough for all the times he didn't believe his father for all these years. He wished he did.
However, that single apology was enough for Joe.
He weakly looks at his son. He felt happy to see him by his side. Dark then suddenly took out the ring that she promised the ghost woman to give to her husband. She got up from her seat and went towards Joe.
"Joe Brody?" She asked the man calmly, watching him look at her weakly. She gently grabs his hand and puts the ring on his palm. "I believe this belongs to you."
Joe weakly opens his shaking palm and sees the familiar ring that he gave to his Sandra. It was the same looking ring he gave her during wedding day. Tears falling down his eyes as he remembers his wife and all the happy memories flash before his eyes.
"Thank you." Joe whispers out weakly before turning to his son while clutching the ring with all the strength he has left. "…G-g…Go home…to your family," Joe said to his son weakly, taking in a breath. "You keep them safe. O-okay? Whatever it takes." Joe continued weekly. "Whatever…it…take…" Joe's words trailed off as he closed his eyes and his vitals started to drop.
Panic filled in Ford's eyes, holding his father. "Hey, stay with me, dad?" Ford said quietly. "Dad?!"
"Radial pulse is weaker. Barely feel it." Said a medic. "We're losing him." The medic began doing CPR.
"Joe, can you hear me?" Said the second medic.
"He's going into Afib. Give me another epi, one milligram, and 40 units of vasopressin." Said the first medic, continuing with eth CPR. "Stay with us. Come on, Joe. Hang in there, buddy."
While the medical team did their best to take care of Joe, Ford sat there watching his father in shock, grabbing furiously at the sides of his head and rocking back and forth as he tried to keep himself calm. He could barely contain himself as his hands closed into fists at the sides of his head and he fought back tears hoping that his father would be all right.
Watching with sympathy were Spider-Man, Serizawa, and Graham. Serizawa was silently hoping and praying that Joe would pull through. For there were many things that he wanted to ask Joe about his work in the plant fifteen years ago and there were even more things he would have to tell Joe should he survive. For this man deserved the answers, and Serizawa had the chance to give him those answers if Joe were able to survive this ordeal. Serizawa looked to Dr. Graham, who also sat in silence with a look of sadness on her face.
The chopper landed on the deck of the USS Saratoga, an aircraft carrier in the US Navy, just off the coast of Japan. They got off and Joe was rushed to the infirmary where the medics scrambled to help keep him stay alive. Ford was taken along with him. Dark and Spider-Man soon followed him, needing to know about those disks and what happened years ago.
While they left, both Dr. Serizawa and Dr. Graham were asked to go to the control room, where the current military leader of this operation was now giving a speech about how to deal with this new threat. When they arrived, they saw multiple screens on the wall, showing the news report of a 6.3 earthquake in Japan. With moving text below saying about a radiation leakage with fires spreading throughout the deserted suburbs of Janjira, Japan. Of course, it was just a cover up, so the public won't panic about a giant monster.
"This is our needle in a haystack, people!" The current leader of the military said, pointing towards a series of television monitors displaying footage of the creature from before. "M.U.T.O., Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism. It is however no longer terrestrial, it is airborne. Now the world still thinks this was an earthquake and it would be preferable that that remained so. Before we lost sight of it was headed east across the Pacific, and had emitted enough EMP to create havoc with our radar and satellite feeds and reduce us, for the moment, to a strictly visual pursuit. I emphasize "for the moment", because we will get on our game…and we will find this thing," he said, turning back to face the crew. "It is imperative that we do so."
He concluded before turning towards Captain Hampton, "Captain, I want any and all search options on this table ASAP," he said.
"Yes, sir," Captain Hampton responded respectfully.
As Captain Hampton walks out of the room, passing Serizawa, who was glued to the screen, as the man in charge walked over to him. "Dr. Serizawa…Admiral William Stenz," he introduces himself, extending his hand at the scientist.
Serizawa, adjusting his bag, shook Admiral Stenz's hand, responding with a "Nice to meet you."
"Glad to have you on board," Admiral Stenz said to Serizawa. He was about to ask him a question when they were interrupted by Graham at the door.
"Sensei," Graham called from the door, beckoning Serizawa over.
"Excuse me," Serizawa said to the admiral, who allowed him to leave.
Serizawa jogged over to Graham, who whispered to him about the news of Joe Brody. However, it was not good news. It was later revealed that Joe Brody has fallen unconscious, and the medics take care of him until he wakes up. Dark and Spider-Man were there by Ford's side, watching as the doctors did their best to care for his unconscious father. But soon they were called to a meeting room, where Serizawa, Graham, and other people in suits were inside.
"Lieutenant." Serizawa greeted him calmly. "I am so sorry for what has happened to your father."
"He fell unconscious but he's alive." For said to Serizawa.
"We understand, and we hope that he will have a full recovery." Graham said to Ford.
Ford nodded his head before Dark came in front of the two scientists with a sarcastic grin on her face. "Anyways, why don't you tell us about the fact that you were hiding a giant chrysalis that was housing a giant monster that could potentially. Oh, I don't know…attack and destroy the nearest city it lands upon!?"
Her words made sense, and they quickly gestured to her and the others to sit as they explained the situation. They took their seats and watched as the projection device fired up and began showing footage of the USS Nautilus in 1954, as well as other images of special events taking place during that time.
"In 1954, the first time a nuclear submarine ever reached the lower depths…" Serizawa began explaining the history of the situation before eyeing on the screen with a dead serious look. It awakened something."
"Wh-what is it?" Spider-Man asked, feeling nervous as he watched the old footage.
"The Americans first thought that it was the Russians." Graham was the one that explained the next part. "The Russians thought that it was them…all those nuclear bomb tests in the 50's…?"
They looked at the screen as it showed footage of the nuclear bombs going off one by one, ending with the Castle Bravo footage.
"… Not tests," Graham continued her explanation.
"They were trying to kill it," Serizawa added, not taking his eyes off the screen.
"Kill what, exactly?" Dark asked the two scientists, not taking her eyes off the screen.
They showed her the next footage to reveal a massive creature rising out of the water with a nuclear warhead in the foreground. It froze after just a moment, showing the spines and tremendous body of some kind of enormous reptilian creature.
"Him…" Serizawa answered to Dark, pointing to the image of the creature in the footage. "An ancient, alpha predator."
"Millions of years older than mankind." Graham continued, showing charts of dinosaurs, the creature's skeletal structure, and an embryo of a reptile. "From an age when the Earth was ten times more radioactive than today. This animal and others like it, consumed this radiation as a food source. As the levels on the surface naturally subsided...these creatures adapted to live deeper in the oceans. Further underground. Absorbing radiation from the planet's core."
The footage then shows researchers entering a cavern, followed by another footage of some people on a ship and were placing a strange yet big machine into the water. And another footage shows the creature's dorsal plates, cutting through the water with ease.
"The organization we work for, MONARCH, was established in the wake of this discovery. A multinational coalition formed in secrecy…to search for him. Study him. Learn everything we could," Graham told the three people.
"We call him…" Serizawa turned to Dark, Spider-Man, and Ford. "Gojira."
"Go…jira?" Spider-Man said the name in confusion.
"The top of a primordial ecosystem…a God, for all intents and purposes," Graham stated out to them.
"A monster," Ford whispered out.
"A Kaiju…" Dark mutters the word that Lex told her on Red Xenomorph Hybrid Island.
"Fifteen years ago we found the fossil of another giant animal in the Philippines, like Gojira. But this creature died long ago, killed by these." Serizawa said, gesturing at the screen that showed images and footage of the MUTO pods.
"What are those things?" Spider-Man asked, looking at the alien pods on the screen.
"Parasitic spores," Graham added.
"Wait, there's more of them?" Dark asked, sounding alarmed.
"Two actually. One is dormant, but the other hatched." Graham explained to Dark the situation. "Catalyzed when a mining company unknowingly drilled into its tomb." She points at the screen to show the map, revealing the Philippines and small dots heading to Japan, but to Janjira. "The hatchling burrowed straight for the nearest source of radiation, your father's power plant in Janjira, and cocooned there for fifteen years absorbing its radioactive fuel to gestate, to grow."
"Until it hatched, like a butterfly, into the creature you three saw today," Serizawa added.
"Yeah, a freaking murderous butterfly." Dark mutters out.
Ford just realizes something. "Whoa, wait. You knew about this?" Ford asked the two scientists. His tone angered at the two scientists for not telling anyone about this thing, this MUTO. And he lost his mother because of it. "This thing? The whole time? Why didn't you kill it when you had the chance?!" Ford almost shouted at them angrily.
"Easy there, Lieutenant. They were right not to kill it." Dark said, getting his attention as she explains her reason. "That creature, the MUTO, was absorbing radiation from the reactors, and if they did kill it, the radiation that was stored inside would endanger or kill millions of lives."
Ford slowly understood her words, discovering the reason why MONARCH kept the creature a secret.
"That's why our mission was to contain it. To study its biology, to understand it." Serizawa explained to them MONARCH's purpose.
"We knew the creature was having an electrical effect on everything within close proximity." Graham explained the ability that the MUTO possesses. "What we didn't know was that it could harness this same power in an EMP attack. But your father did. He predicted it."
"Holy shit…" Dark mutters out, looking at the two scientists.
"What else did he say before he fell unconscious?" Serizawa asked Ford.
"Please try to remember, Mr. Brody. Anything that would help us. Anything at all." Graham urges Ford to remember his father's notes. Something that could help them stop the MUTO.
Ford shook his head. Feeling guilty for not listening carefully to his father's words. "I didn't listen. I just thought he was crazy. He was obsessed with all this..." He gestures to the screen before them.
"Come on, Brody. Try to remember a small piece of information that your dad knows before he went unconscious." Dark said to him.
Ford tries to remember the words his father explained to him before he shuts him out. It took a while but he did remember something. Something that was important in his father's words. "He said something about an animal call. Something talking."
This caught everyone's attention, especially Serizawa. "Talking?" The head of MONARCH asked in an urging tone.
"He said he was studying something." Brody continued, remembering bits of his father's words. "Echolocation."
"Echolocation?" Spider-Man asked Ford, who nodded his head. "If it was using echolocation to talk then…something must have responded to it, right?"
Serizawa nodded in agreement, "Yes. If the MUTO was talking that day then his father must have discovered something talking back."
"But the question is, to whom was it talking to?" Dark asked the group.
"That we are going to find out." Serizawa said before looking at Graham. "Check again. Search for a response call."
Graham understood and got up to retrieve the data. When she did, Serizawa looks over to the footage of the MUTO's chrysalis
"This parasite. It's still out there. Wh-where's it headed?" Ford asked Serizawa.
"The MUTO is young...growing," Serizawa answered, turning towards the group. "It will be looking for food."
"Wh-what kind of food?" Spider-Man stutters a bit. "Please don't tell me it feeds on people…"
Graham came back with the bag, "No, it will search for sources of radiation. We're monitoring all known sites...but if we don't find it soon-"
"Then what?" Ford asked, dreading what would come next.
"If this MUTO is a parasite then we're dealing with an invasive species." Dark said to the group in a serious manner. "It will break the Earth's ecosystem."
"Is there a way to stop this thing?" Spider-Man asked, fearing for the lives of the people,
"Nature has an order. A power to restore balance," Serizawa started, turning towards the still image of Gojira.
"I believe he is that power," he concluded his theory.
Dark and Spider-Man looked at the image with an unreadable expression. But they knew one thing in mind. They have to inform Fury and the others about this situation.
For they have a bad feeling that this is the beginning of the war between man and Kaiju.
P.S. Lacunae Magicae is an incarnation from a TV series called Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I used Google Translate for the Japanese part.
Thank you for your help in finding other Kaijus/Titans and Jaegers.
More chapters will come soon.
