Touya's [Gate] appeared right outside Kelvin's mansion. There was a blonde-haired elf girl in a maid uniform standing at the front entrance. As soon as she saw Touya, she drew her bow and pointed it at him.
"Gniyas yllautca m'I tahw fo gninaem eht tcelfer ton seod taht txet sdrawkcab ni llaw htruof eht kaerb ot yako ti si?" she asked angrily.
"I'm sorry, I don't understand your language!" said Touya.
"Efil!" said Melfina, rushing outside to stop the elf. "Net emulov fo owt dna eno sretpahc neewteb er'ew kniht I. Noitcifnaf siht tresni ot enilemit levon thgil enohptrams iakesi eht ni nehw gnidiced emit drah a dah tsuj rohtua eht!"
"Enilemit renommus kcalb eht ni ew era nehw?" asked Efil, lowering her bow.
"hsilgne sdrawkcab eht morf llet nac uoy. Yzal tib a eb nac rohtua siht. Denimreted eb ot sniamer taht," answered Melfina.
"I recognize you," said Touya to Melfina. "Can you understand what I'm saying?"
"I understand every language in the multiverse," answered Melfina.
"I have a spell that can teach me any language you know," said Touya, "but I'm afraid my brain might overload from every language in the multiverse all at once."
"If you want to play it safe, then Efil here should suffice," said Melfina, who then turned to Efil. "Tey fo sa yrogetac ihsnakuohs on oruk a evah t'nseod llits ten tod noitcifnaf eveileb t'nac I."
Efil nodded, then shook Touya's hand, allowing Touya to cast his spell. "[Translation]."
"Can you understand me now?" asked Efil.
"Loud and clear," said Touya.
"Weren't there supposed to be more of you visiting?" asked Efil.
"If you were expecting us, then why did you attack me?" asked Touya incredulously.
"Lady Mel told me to expect ten people," explained Efil. "When I saw you alone, you looked suspicious. I couldn't discount the possibility that you were an intruder with awkward timing."
"Come now, Efil," said Melfina, "do you really think one person would be stupid enough to attack us singlehandedly?"
"Good point," said Efil.
"Even so, Efil's right about one thing," said Melfina. "It is odd that you're alone. Where's the rest of your party?"
"It turns out that opening a portal between worlds was harder than either of us anticipated," answered Touya. "I had to take a detour through a place Melfina can probably go, but most people can't."
"No need to be so cryptic," said Melfina. "Efil knows that I'm a goddess. It's a secret from most people, but everyone who lives in this mansion knows."
"I guess I feel a little less awkward being a god in training," said Touya. "I know my party was cool with me being from another world, but this whole divinity stuff is a bit much, even for me. Still, my party forced me to tell them everything when I was beating around the bush after opening a portal to the Divine Realm that they couldn't follow me through. More importantly, I promised not to leave them behind, so I need to find a way to summon them to this world as soon as possible."
"I suppose I'll have to handle the hero summoning ritual," said Melfina. "This will put a strain on the world barrier, but luckily, your detour through the Divine Realm didn't already do that." She closed her eyes, and her body started glowing. At the same time, a giant magic circle appeared in mansion's backyard, and nine girls came out of it, along with an animated teddy bear.
"It's about time!" said Elze, after she and the others came out of the magic circle.
"Not to sound surprised," said Efil, "but I still can't understand their language."
Touya pulled out his smartphone. "Target lock: My party. Activate [Translation] to teach them this world's language." Nine magic circles appeared above Touya's party. Luckily for Paula the teddy bear, her language comprehension seemed to mirror that of her creator, Leen.
"Impressive," said Melfina. "I didn't realize your [Translation] spell worked in both directions."
"That's what you find impressive?" said Efil. "I'm more interested in that device he's holding."
"You'll get used to it," said every girl from Touya's party in unison.
"Now that we're all here," said Melfina, "let's all go inside and meet the rest of the family."
"SLIME!" screamed Yae, drawing her sword.
"Yae, stop!" said Touya. "That's my cousin!"
"That slime is your cousin?" said Yae incredulously.
"No, the slime is perched on my cousin's shoulder!" said Touya. "Besides, if it wanted to eat clothing, it would have eaten my cousin's clothes already."
"Touche," said Yae, sheathing her sword.
"Are you from Japan?" asked Kelvin.
"It's me, Touya! Don't you remember me?"
"My King's cousin seems to have an even bigger harem than my King himself," said Gerard, the phantom knight.
Touya, Kelvin, and every girl in Touya's party went beet red in the face. "Um, it's true that we're all engaged to marry Touya," said Hildegard, the knight-princess of Lestia, "but calling us a harem is a bit... blunt."
"Grampa Gerard's always like that," said Rion, Kelvin's adopted little sister. "It's best to just tune it out."
"Kyu, kyu!" said Clotho, the slime on Kelvin's shoulder.
"Just to clarify, Touya," said Lucia, the dual-blade-wielding princess of Regulus, "this guy's your actual cousin, and not a god like your so-called sisters Karen and Moroha?"
"I think I'd remember if Kuroki had any god-like powers back in Japan," said Touya.
"Actually, my name's Kelvin now. I sold my memories for skill points, so I can't even remember what my name used to be. And the only Touya I remember is a reckless hero summoned to this world from Japan who dives headfirst into danger to save everybody except himself."
"That sounds a lot like our Touya," said Elze. "For all I know, 'Touya' could be the Japanese word for meddling in other people's affairs."
"Actually, it means Winter Night," said Touya. "And 'Mochizuki' means Full Moon."
"If you're my cousin," said Kelvin, "how much do you remember about me that I forgot about myself?"
"Trust me, you don't wanna know," said Touya. "Let's just say that skill points probably weren't the only reason you sold your memories."
"Some things are best left forgotten," added Sakura, the demonkin girl in Touya's party. "I should know. The only good thing that came from getting my memories back was reuniting with my mother, as well as my Dark Elf attendant Spica. They'd both be heartbroken if I got amnesia again."
"So would your father," siad Yumina's younger cousin Sushie.
"Screw him," said Sakura. "He abandoned me and my mother just to keep my existence as a demon princess a secret, then tried to barge back into my life as soon as that secret was out."
"Wow, that sounds exactly like my father," said Sera, the demon girl in Kelvin's party. "Except that he died before he had a chance to do that last part. Maybe you should give your father the chance that my father never had."
"I'm not sure you're in a position to be talking," said Melfina. "If your father, Demon Lord Gustav, came back to life, he'd be compelled to destroy this world. Not exactly a situation for a father-daughter reunion."
"Sakura's father isn't that kind of demon lord," said Touya. "He's just the Overlord of the Demon Kingdom of Xenoahs."
"He's also extremely annoying," said Sakura. "I'd rather fight the Phrase than try to hold a conversation with him."
"That's pretty harsh," siad Hilde, "considering that the Phrase really are threatening to destroy our world."
"That reminds me," said Touya, "weren't there Phrase sightings in this world? That's kind of the reason we came here in the first place."
"Yeah, about that," said Kelvin, "every time the Phrase appear in this world, their attacks keep focusing on me for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the thrill of battle, but I just don't get what the Phrase want from me."
"Darling, your cousin reminds me of King Jamukha of Mismede," said Leen. "Has he always been a battle junkie?"
"From what I remember, he was clinically depressed," said Touya. "Based on his current personality, it seems that erasing his memory also erased his trauma. I'm actually surprised that he even remembers the existence of Japan. More importantly, we don't know when the Phrase will next appear in this world, so we should make sure we're prepared. Melfina, are there any differences between our two worlds that might affect our magic?"
"First, you should all look at your status screens," said Melfina. "Just by thinking about them, they'll appear in your lines of vision."
"This looks kind of like Touya's smartphone screen projected by [Mirage]," said Linze. "Although I can't see anyone else's besides my own."
"I can see mine just fine," said Elze, "but I can't see yours."
"Unless you have Appraising Eye, you can't see anybody else's status screen," explained Melfina. "Now, those of you with null magic in your old world should notice that your spells have been converted to unique skills. As for elemental magic, the six elements have been condensed into five colors: red, green, blue, white and black. Green magic covers both wind and earth. The other four elements have pretty obvious color codes."
"Luckily for us," said Leen, "three of us, myself included, have aptitudes for both earth and wind, and the other seven have neither of them, so we don't need to worry about green magic getting split down the middle."
"That doesn't explain why I suddenly have access to red magic," said Yumina. "In my old world, fire was not one of my aptitudes."
"If I recall correctly," said Melfina, "lightning in your world was a subclass of wind magic, was it not?"
"That's right, and wind is one of my aptitudes, along with earth and darkness," said Yumina.
"That doesn't make sense," said Sera.
"Only because you're accustomed to the rules of this world," said Melfina. "They probably think it's just as weird that red magic in this world covers both fire and lightning. As for black magic, it doesn't have the same connection to summoning as darkness in their old world."
"Actually, my status screen says 'summoner' under my class," said Yumina.
"So does mine," said Sakura.
"Same here," said Touya. "It makes sense that black magic and summoning magic would be a package deal only to those of us who came from a world where they're both intertwined. I guess if anyone asks, it's a coincidence that only three of us have black magic and the same three are summoners."
"Actually," said Melfina, "if anyone asks, you're not summoners. Summoner is an extremely rare class that's coveted by the governments of every nation. Trust me, you don't want that kind of attention. If you have any summoning contracts that you want to make use of, you should summon them here and now where the public cannot see you. Then, if anyone asks, you three are beast tamers. And yes, you can write off your access to black magic as a coincidence."
"That's all well and good for Touya with his limitless mana pool," said Yumina, "but Sakura and I can only maintain our summons for so long before we run out of mana."
"That may have been true in your old world," said Melfina, "where your summoned beasts consumed mana proportional to the time they spent being summoned. But in this world, all you have to do is pay MP up front and you can keep your familiars summoned for as long as you want. I should warn you that the moment you use summoning magic, your maximum MP and current MP will both decrease by the same amount. When you un-summon, your max MP will instantly increase, but your current MP will take time to replenish."
"Come forth, Darkness!" said Yumina. "I mean, Come forth, Black... no, that's not relevant here..."
"In this world," said Melfina, "none of the elements need the energy buildup fanfare that you used in your old world. Just say the name of the spell and you can cast it as easily as you would cast null magic in your old world. For summoning magic, just say the name of your familiar."
"[Silver Wolf Pack]!" said Yumina. A magic circle appeared in front of her, and a pack of wolves came out.
"[Mr Mittens]!" said Sakura.
Nothing happened.
"Fine," said Sakura. "[D'Artagnan]!" A cat sith swordsman appeared in front of her.
"[Kohaku]! [Kokuyou and Sango]! [Kougyoku]! [Luli]!" said Touya. A white tiger, a snake wrapped around a tortoise, a phoenix and a dragon appeared in front of him.
