It was almost midnight. The festival had ended hours ago, but after taking up Dexter's offer to go joyriding in his new and improved plane, Amy couldn't resist the opportunity, even though his travels around the globe were strictly business, Amy could not help but feel jealous at Dexter's mobility. It was a shame she couldn't do the same thing. As a child she always imagined going on grand adventure and like everyone else she grew tired the mundane and structured nature of her routine. While she gone on many adventures and traveled many places since, every so often she would crave for that rush of adrenaline again. She was glad Dexter afforded that rush, at least for the afternoon.
They made it back to her Station Square apartment far too soon for her liking, but it was getting late. He had parked the plane on the rooftop and escorted Amy to her room. They had been talking feverishly all day, but once they reached the door an awkward silence grew amongst them, the mixed emotions of their eventual departing lingering.
"I've had such a great time," Amy broke through the silence.
"Me too!" Dexter concurred excitedly, but reserved himself when he remembered Sonic's advice to play it cool.
"I'm glad to have been your date. I wish I could've been able ta' take ya' out on a second one sooner but work's called and given me a new job. They want me to be in Mazuri by tomorrow night." Amy could not hide her disappointment. "Oh, that's a shame, are you going to be back in town?"
"A week, maybe two, depends how many deliveries they need me ta' do."
"Well, you shouldn't leave on an empty stomach. Come in. I'll pack you up some lunchboxes and should stay the night. No offense, but only Sonic can sleep on Tails' couch and not get sore."
Dexter didn't even have time to blush and turn down the offer as Amy pulled him in to her bubblegum pink apartment. The second the door closed, a loud "Yes!" could be heard from around the corner of Amy's apartment. He pat himself on the back. Sonic the Hedgehog ran off to tell Tails that he was the winner of their bet.
At Tails' workshop in the early morning hours, the two-tailed fox was making breakfast. Nearby on the couch, Sonic was content, enjoying the pancakes his best friend made.
"Ah! Today is a good day," Sonic couldn't help but say the statement as smugly as possible, the feeling was too much to hide. Sonic had not seen Amy so cheerful in a long time. With Dexter she became the carefree girl he had always known. No more crying on her balcony. No more waiting for him to come back. She was happy, and to that end Sonic was happy as well. Sonic chuckled as he heard Tails grumble to himself in the kitchen.
"Hey, its your fault you didn't think my plan would work. Now you owe me a chilli dog for everyday of the year."
Sonic's gloating was interrupted by a knock at the door which made Sonic yell out, "It's open!", to avoid getting up.
"Tails! Is Sonic still here?" Amy opened the door wearing her usual attire.
"Amy!?" Sonic was so shocked that he almost fell off the couch. "What are you doing here?"
"I was hoping, you hadn't left so we could talk."
"About what?" He then smirked. "Oh yeah, this about your date." Sonic saw his chance and immediately got into his character. He faked sadness.
"So, I guess whatever we had is over, right?" He feigned a tear dropping from his eye and kicked nothing. He wanted her to admit the truth, to make sure his plan worked beyond a shadow of a doubt.
"Lay it on me Amy."
"Sonic-"
"Please Amy, let me down gently."
"I-"
"Just say it. Amy, I can 't take it anymore. Have mercy- "
"SONIC!" She yelled and almost lost her composure. "It didn't work out."
"WHAT!"
It was Sonic's turn to lose it while Tails cheered from the kitchen. Tails ran out of the kitchen and into his lab to start preparations for his new lab hedgehog. Amy ignored the fox and explained.
"The date was great, but we decided to call it quits."
"B-but why? "Sonic lost his ability to speak. 'HOW!' Everything was perfect. The location. The atmosphere. All that romantic nonsense the pink hedgehog always gushes about. He gave Dexter all of his tips and advice that should have all but guaranteed Amy Rose's heart, and IT STILL DIDN'T WORK.
"I need to sit down." Exhausted from the stress and his new job as a test subject for Tails more 'eccentric' ideas, Sonic planted himself back on the coach and Amy joined him.
"I know why you're upset," she smiled, "Dexter told me everything."
Inside, Dexter couldn't stop sweating bullets. A girl! A real girl just invited him into their house. He would normally enjoy sitting on such a comfortable yet garishly pink sofa. Back home he never had such fashionable décor, and the only girls he'd ever been alone with were his mother and sisters. Amy was right; however, her sofa bed was a lot more comfortable. Amy joined him with two cups of hot chocolate in hand and placed them on the coffee table.
"I just finished your lunchboxes. They should last you for a month if you're not peckish," she joked.
"You didn't have ta' do have do that Amy!"
"No problem, Dexter. Anything to thank you for an amazing date!," she winked at him, which made the pilot blush.
"Ah, it was nuthin' really," he replied bashfully, and took a large sip of the hot chocolate. "Any guy would be lucky to spend an evening with you and have her be such a great cook."
"Not every guy, "Amy lamented quietly, but regretted letting it slip. She promised she won't compared Dexter to him . Especially out loud. How rude!
Dexter moved his cup back onto a coaster and snuggled closer to Amy to try and cheer her up.
"Well, this guy is the luckiest in world right now." Amy smiled and decreased the distance between them. So close together in fact that their noses were touching.
"I haven't felt this way about anyone in such a long time. I'm so glad you took me out today. I've been wanting to go to that festival forever, but I didn't want to go without a date."
'You mean without Sonic,' her subconscious added spitefully.
"Well, I'm glad you chose m-" Dexter was suddenly interrupted by Amy's lips. Sonic warned him that the pink hedgehog could be forceful (not that he minded). He didn't expect to readily receive another kiss so soon. He was lucky he got one earlier when the mood was perfect. Their lips have been connected for a while and had reached the point of making out. Sonic gave basic date advice. When Dexter inquired about what to do if things went beyond a peck on check however, Sonic violently brushed off the suggestion and pretended he couldn't hear him, so Dexter was flying blind with a lovesick hedgehog who clearly had more experience in this department. This was evident to Amy as Dexter released himself from her grip and breathed heavily, not understanding he was meant to breathe through his nose and not his mouth as per kissing etiquette. Amy however, misinterpreted his action to indicate a lack of enjoyment.
"I'm so sorry," Amy said, embarrassed. "I clearly misread the mood; I understand if you'd rather leave. Gosh, you must think I'm such a floozy."
"Are you crazy? I'd be an idiot to reject a kiss from a pretty girl like you. It's just..."
"What? Did I come on too strong? Ugh, I always make guys run for the hills!"
"No, it's not that," Dexter grabbed Amy's hand and looked sincerely into her eyes.
"I really like you Amy, you're beautiful, smart and caring, and more words I don't have ta' time to say. When we first met, you ended up being everything I imagined you to be and more. You've had so much fun, but I can't take credit for your happiness. I owe Sonic for everything. He knows what flowers you like. He knew you wanted to go to the Romance festival. He helped the planned the darn thing! He's the one you should be thanking, not me." Dexter sighed, glad he was finally able to tell the truth, he became worried, however when Amy never replied, and began to sniffle.
"Sonic... Did this all for me? But why? Why didn't he-" She continued in almost a manic state, mumbling angrily as Dexter could only watch sympathetically.
"You'll have to ask him why. He never told me, but I think we both know the answer, Amy."
It was Sonic's turn to sweat, but he was more so frustrated with Dexter. He had a feeling the tan hedgehog was incapable of keeping a secret, especially one of this magnitude, and of course the blue punching bag would be the one to suffer for wrath of Amy's hammer was imminent, Sonic could sense it... and yet the attack never came. In fact, Amy was smiling, beaming even. After blowing her off, leaving her months on end without so much as a postcard and setting up a' pity' date out of guilt, Amy Rose was happy.
'I'll never understand girls', Sonic pondered. Amy Rose proved to be an enigma.
Amy couldn't hold in anymore, she gave Sonic a quick peck on the cheek. Sonic brought his hand up to his cheek, surprised by her generous reaction to his dishonesty. Amy took the opportunity to hold him close as his defenses were down.
"That was really sweet what you did. I had a slight suspicion Dexter had help. He's thoughtful but there's no way he couldn't have known so much about me. I'll be honest as much as had a great time... I wish you could've taken me."
"Look Amy, I didn't mean to use Dexter like that, he genuinely likes you-"
"I know!" Amy interrupted, "I was flattered but we decided to just stay friends. He did show me a great time. So much so, I think I need to close the shop and take some out for some myself."
"What did you have in mind?"
"Some adventure. I wanna' go someplace I haven't been. As long there's sand and sun."
"Well, Apotos definitely fits the bill. The place is gorgeous and the ice cream there is the best in the world."
"Oh, how exotic?" Alongside being the fastest thing alive, Amy envied Sonic's worldly wise attitude, yet it was also one of the many reasons why she loved him. "If this is going to be an impromptu adventure rather than a planned vacation, I better get going. I guess I'll see you whenever," she gave him a quick goodbye.
This was the first time in a long time her and the blue blur formally shared their goodbyes (and without her breaking down into an emotional wreck at the thought of going months without seeing Sonic). Finally there were no tears, no overblown sadness, drama or anger, simply a calm send off between friends. Sonic remained cool and collected as Amy Rose was about to disappear out of his life for another foreseeable future. A part of him was proud of the mature lady she had become. Out of all his friends, Amy had changed the most, both physically and mentally. She was a grown woman now, a successful businesswoman and a pretty one at that. Sonic was glad she'd moved on from chasing him and being more independent, getting attention from guys that would reciprocate her love in return. Sonic was happy that she was happy and yet...
"Hey Amy, wait up!"
Why couldn't he get that image of Amy crying on the balcony?
"Sonic?"
"You can't leave so soon. I've barely seen you."
He didn't owe her anything. She'd already thanked him for a date he didn't even have to attend.
"I mean, I was plannin' on movin' on soon as well and..."
Why did Amy Rose hold so much power him?
"So it is it okay if I come with?"
Amy turned around and ran into her love's arms. She couldn't contain herself. Sonic wanted to be with her. Alone, and join her to visit arguably the most romantic place on the planet. She had spent most her teenage years practically begging him to tag along on his adventures and now Sonic was inviting himself along. She was officially the luckiest girl in the world, no the universe. And it was all because he was all too willing to play matchmaker. "Of course, but... " Amy pointed to the local train station in the Mystic Ruins.
"Can we take the long way?"
"Sure," Sonic picked her up bridal style and escorted them to the station. As they waited at the platform, Amy lost control and swiftly stole a kiss from Sonic's lips who didn't even have time to react as the train arrived and opened its doors.
"That's what you get for playing Matchmaker! Now you owe me a proper date at the next Romance Festival. I'll be sure to convince Ruby and Sapphire make us King and Queen of Never Lake! And save your Matchmaking skills for Silver and Blaze, they're the one's that really need the push, don't you see how often they're together yet neither have made a move!"
Sonic, ever shocked by Amy's boldness could only chuckle. "Duly noted..." So much for putting his 'meddling' skills behind him.
"And you know what Ames," He put his arms over her shoulder. "Why wait till next year, why don't we me make the trip to Apotos our next date, I'll even throw in run to Mazuri since you weren't there."
"R-really!"
Sonic only nodded. "Then what are we waiting for!"
As if on cue, the train entered the station. Amy pulled Sonic on to the train, a new adventure awaiting the couple.
Sonic and Amy could never describe what their relationship was, but after today, they didn't have to ask anymore as they were happy with it as it was.
'Maybe someday,' Amy pondered. 'Someday Sonic would say it out in the open. Tell me in plain words as he was blunt with most things,' but she knew he wasn't ready for that kind of commitment and that was fine. He was free as the wind and that would never change, but like the wind, the breeze would always return and she was willing to wait for that breeze for as long as it took.
As Amy babbled on about the various potential couplings Sonic could aid, the blue blur also thought about Dexter's words the night before. 'Why would you do so much for her if you didn't love her?!'
Sonic still couldn't answer that question. At least not now. He was still young after all. Every time he looked at Amy Rose, he noticed a feeling in his heart he had yet to explain, something yet to click. There was still so much he could do, so many places to explore...
'But I guess it couldn't hurt to have her tag along...' He reasoned. He didn't mind having her around, in fact, she was great company and it helped that she was super cu-. His thought process stopped there. He realised Amy was the one playing Matchmaker all along.
It's finally done. I'm so proud of myself! Only this pairing can inspire me to continue my love of writing and there's more stuff in the works. I honestly wasn't sure whether I wanted Dexter and Amy to get together in end, the first draft did, but as I began to like Dexter as I was writing, I didn't want him to a simple rebound for Amy either. Alas Sonamy, as usual, wins out in the end. Honestly other than Boom Sonamy, I prefer writing them as adults then teenagers haha. Between this and my 'Crushing in Your' series, I like the speculative nature of their relationship, so many different AUs to make! Also The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog made so happy as well, never been more excited for new Sonic media, and inspire more Pink and Blue one shot potential!
Thank you to all the people who reviewed, favourited and followed this story over past 2 years. It's bittersweet in a way. As someone who was in a dark state of my life in 2021-2022, reading and writing Fanfics was the few things that gave me joy and I hope whoever read this even as an anonymous reader or casual scroller got joy or laughter from it. It means alot
Please continue to read and review and stay tuned for more Sonamy goodness (and Tails Crush, I promised I haven't forgotten lmao).
