Alright nerds. Editor boi Stryker back at it again with the review answers since Wolfie is being a lazy fuck.
Also, a little fun fact about this chapter… a LOT of shit happens in this. Chapter 31 here is the longest chapter Wolf has ever written for a story to date and it took him and I, in hours, almost 3 full days. That's like 72 hours of just writing. Crazy. In the main chapter part, there are over 12,500 words so strap in and prepare yourselves for one hell of a wild ride.
Axelmos2356 from chapter 29: Uhhhh no comment.
Irbrenneke: Hmmm no.
edeath756: Thanks man! You show impeccable loyalty and I appreciate it. I hope that the future chapters are to your satisfaction.
Yubel578: AYEEEEEE WHAT'S UP BROTHA! As for Firnen and Saphira… there's a scene coming up in… I think 32 or 33 where Stargazer reminds Glaedr of a little something. Not saying more but I see you've pieced a few puzzle pieces together and now we're gonna be throwing more in. Good luck. :)
Laplase: What? Confused on your review man and I wrote 70% of the chapter…
Axelmos2356 from chapter 30: Yeah no. Far from it.
With the reviews outta the way, let's dive into chapter 31!
"Murderer…."
"Destroyer…."
"Abomination!"
"Devourer!"
"Death!"
"Monster!
Not again. Ancalagon said quietly as he heard the whispers, the taunts, the insults of the dead. Once again, he was back in total darkness, which blended in quite well with his scales but that was the furthest thing from his mind right now as he looked around before freezing at a very familiar sight.
Piles of bodies laid on top of each other, and at the top of it all… stood the dark dragon who reveled in the destruction and the bloodshed he caused, while the remains of a city were ablaze behind him in the background. At the base of the pile… was the skull of what was clearly a dragon, with slight signs of sapphire-coloured scales.
Saphira… Ancalagon whispered as he took a step forth but stopped and shook his head. This is just a dream. It's not real!
Oh, but it is real… His own voice responded to him and he looked to see the darker version of him descend from the pile towards him. Now that he could see him closer, he saw the blood drenched over the scales, dripping from the teeth, and the signs of darkness, bloodlust and complete evil in the eyes. You can choose to deny it, but you know… we are the same being. I'm just what you refuse to accept is now part of you!
No… no… Ancalagon shook his head. You're not me! I refuse to admit it!
The dark dragon growled. And that… is where you fail. Embrace it, Michael. Embrace what you now are. Accept it!
No!
The dragon's anger grew and his eyes darkened. EMBRACE WHAT YOU ARE!
Michael… A soft female voice crooned, distracting them both. Come back to me… or let me in.
The two halves of Ancalagon glanced at one another before a red light appeared and Almandine stood before the two. She glared at the evil half, who shrank away and whimpered under her glare, before turning to Ancalagon and winking.
I'll handle this one for you, kiddo. She quipped before grabbing the evil variant by the horns and dragging him to the river.
Listen now, and listen well, you little shit. The angered dragoness snarled, and the dark form in her grasp mewled. My loving mate is the ONLY reason you even exist at all right now. You should be grateful that he gave Michael your body and you should try helping him expand his abilities and learn what you once knew. She proceeded to dunk the dragon's head in the river, listening to him gurgle and thrash in her grip. After a few moments, Almandine yanked his head back out of the water where he gasped for air. There will be no more of this torment, no more torture, no more of these nightmares! That child who you are tormenting is MY son now. He is not, and never will be, your puppet or vassal! Almandine dunked the dragon again and he thrashed around until she pulled him back to the surface and slammed him to the ground. Her eyes blazed with the fires of rage and the dragon beneath her gulped in fear. AM I UNDERSTOOD? She roared, extremely pissed off.
Y-y-yes m-ma'am. The now humiliated form squeaked before looking over at Michael. I suppose I'll help you when you begin your training and I won't… terrorize you again. I'll do my best to keep your guilt from consuming your mind, but I can't offer a one hundred percent guarantee. You'll still struggle with the guilt, but it won't destroy you anymore. You'll have to find your own outlet.
Michael nodded and the dream faded.

Ancalagon's eyes snapped open and he lifted his head, being careful to not wake the slumbering Saphira beside him. He looked around, seeing they were still at Tarnag, much to his silent displeasure as he wanted to be away from here. However, all that drifted off when he noticed a different feeling… why did it feel like he had a very warm blanket around him? And also, he seemed to have been cuddled up against a larger body.
He turned his head, only to jerk back in surprise when he saw it was Almandine, sleeping. She had her wing draped over his back and he had been pressed against her side, curled underneath her wing. He looked from her wing to her sleeping face, feeling so… at peace with her presence next to him. He remembered how she confronted his… dark side.
That sounds so cliche and lame for a reference. He silently chuckled to himself and shook his head, but he couldn't help but feel grateful for Almandine. She didn't have to go that far for him, but he had a feeling as to why, and it made a tear fall from his eye as he remembered a certain word she used to describe him when belittling the darker Ancalagon.
The child you are tormenting is MY son now.
Ancalagon glanced at her again. He had to admit… she made him feel comforted and relaxed in her presence like he did with his mother, back when he was a small child. When he was scared of things like the dark. He remembered the bedtime stories she'd read to him to put him at ease, or she'd sing a song to lull him to sleep. His mother was… everything to him. She had been his only parental figure in his life, and everything she did for him, to keep their life afloat… it made her the most special, and the most wonderful woman to have walked the Earth.
And he still missed her to this day.
Almandine reminded him greatly of his mother, a woman not afraid to speak her mind, and a woman not afraid to get rough with someone that's angered her. Ancalagon couldn't help but smile as he laid his head down against her side, though there was a caution as he didn't want to overstep his bounds with her. But he nuzzled his head against her side anyway before closing his eyes to settle down.
Unaware of the smile growing on the older female's face as she tightened her grip around him.

Taking a raft from Tarnag, accompanied by several guards, the first morning since leaving the dwarven city was bright and calm. However, the water was far from calm and still… namely because of Ancalagon and Saphira swimming and playing together while their smaller, two-legged companions watched from the raft.
INCOMING! Came the bellow from Stargazer a split-second before a glittering meteor hit the water and drenched everyone with a massive tidal wave.
Ancalagon popped his head out of the water and spat some from his mouth. Looks like you can be a child at heart.
Almandine coughed and spit out river water from her mouth as well before laughing at the smug ass, shit-eating smirk plastered on Stargazer's face. Honey. You were a bit late… incoming already came in.
Came in where? In you? The male asked only to yelp as his mate tackled him into the river while everyone else's faces turned beet red.
Gross. I so did not want to hear that. Ancalagon muttered to Saphira who nodded in agreement while a glint appeared in her eyes.
He isn't wro- AH! Saphira began before Ancalagon dunked her head under the water.
No. Was all he said. God, for dragons who were said to be wise, prideful, and stern creatures… they sure knew how to speak dirty. They'd fit right in with the people of Earth and the twenty-first century.
Saphira forced his paw off and tackled him under the water, getting a surprised yelp from him, as the two wrestled playfully underwater.
Git em! Yeah! You go girl! Kick his ass! Stargazer hollered while laughing. Almandine was relaxing on his back while he swam around in the water. Everyone thought that was hilarious… until she scooped up a wing full of water and doused them.
Then it was their turn to laugh.
Ancalagon and Saphira burst from the water and into the air, playfully nipping and biting at each other as they chased one another. Saphira moved sharply to the left, avoiding Ancalaon's teeth from nipping her scaled flank, rolling over and briefly smacking him in the face with her wings much to his slight annoyance.
Shaking his head, Ancalagon attempted a spin that would result in a spinning tail attack but Saphira had moved out of range and that was when she struck. Tucking her wings in, she dove straight for Ancalagon and slammed into him, catching him by surprise, leaving him unable to fight her off just before the two of them slammed into the water like a pair of meteors, resulting in a huge splash. After a few seconds, they resurfaced and everyone burst out laughing at how they resurfaced.
Saphira was on Ancalagon's back, holding herself up with all four paws pressed down in the space between his wings, while Ancalagon grumbled and looked very exasperated at having to be a 'horse' for his mate-to-be. Saphira plopped down, wrapping her limbs around him and sat her head atop of his own, an expression of pure smugness on her scaled face and Eragon felt the smugness emitting from her. Ancalagon just looked annoyed at his predicament, and the blow to his pride.
An amused male voice entered the minds of all present and sent them laughing so hard, they began to wheeze.
Welcome aboard the Two Mate's Express! Please remember to keep your arms and legs inside the rails at all times. Lacerations and dismemberment are not covered under any circumstances since you were just warned. Use common sense when around the dragons that are at your sides and remember… we do not care. Have a great day and enjoy the views heading to Du Weldenvarden!
Shut up! Ancalagon snapped at him without bite in his words, grumbling at his predicament while everyone else lost themselves in renewed fits of laughter. This is a serious blow to my pride and my reputation! This isn't funny!
Saphira leaned down and licked his cheek. The male cannot always be the 'dominant' one, my dear. And what reputation?
Oh hush you. Ancalagon growled, then slammed his tail down to splash Eragon with water when he noticed the Rider snickering at him.
Don't be a sore loser. A loss is a loss, accept it with dignity. Saphira said, ignoring whatever retort he muttered to himself. Now, I claim my spoils.
Dare I ask what those are?
Hmm... First, you have to carry me on your back until we make land. Ancalagon groaned at that but Saphira silenced him with a nibble on his neck. You will be going to fetch us our dinner tonight.
Anything else, O' Queen of the Skies? Ancalagon asked sarcastically.
Saphira tilted her head at the title he just gave her.Hmm... I quite like that title, so henceforth you will call me Queen of the Skies. If you win our next fight, I may refer to you as King of the Skies.
Ancalagon sighed. This was indeed a serious blow to his pride.
Don't worry kid. Stargazer's voice said in his mind. I'll give you some tips and tricks to humiliate her.
Ancalagon turned his head around to look at the older male behind him and received a subtle wink in response along with a small smirk.
(Line break)
They made landfall that night and set up camp. While Eragon spoke with Ûndin's guards, learning their personal history and such, Ancalagon went off hunting for his and Saphira's dinner. Stargazer had teasingly told him to fetch him and Almandine theirs, but the younger male just gave him a deadpanned look and said:
Get off your big fat scaly ass and get it yourself, old man. Those bones can't be that old where you move slowly and briskly.
And then he took off into the air while Almandine laughed at her mate's stupefied expression.
I am so going to prank that kid later. Stargazer mused.
It didn't take Ancalagon long to return, a pair of large, plump deer in his jaws for himself and his mate-to-be. Plopping Saphira's down at her feet, Saphira gave him a nuzzle in thanks before she dove into her food. Ancalagon settled beside her and dug into his own dinner.
Once dinner was finished for the dragons, Stargazer and Almandine having went to get their own, Ancalagon lifted his wing in invitation, one Saphira eagerly accepted as she snuggled into his side, nuzzling her snout against his neck and he placed his wing over her like a warm, large blanket. His left front leg wrapping around her and pulling her close, much to her delight as she hummed. Ancalagon laid his head down, and Saphira instantly placed hers on top of his.
As the pair relaxed and began succumbing to the calls of sleep, Saphira heard what seemed like roars in the distance. Carefully extricating herself from her now sleeping partner, she followed in the direction the noise was coming from. She walked into a flat area and immediately froze, jaw hanging open, at what she saw.
There, looking very distracted, was Stargazer and Almandine… mating.
The older male was on top of the female, who was on her back, thrusting into her with earnest. Animalistic grunts escaped the older male as his hips moved fast and quick. Almandine gave pleased growls and roars, her tail swishing back and forth eagerly before it coiled around Stargazer's tightly. Her hind legs were wrapped tightly at Stargazer's hips, leaning her head back as Stargazer leaned down and ran his tongue up her neck, making her shiver in pleasure, before her body was rocked as Stargazer kept his rhythm.
Saphira knew she shouldn't be here during this… private moment between them, but she was frozen stiff. She couldn't tear her eyes away from the scene. Her eyes widened even more when Stargazer pulled back, and she saw… something between his legs. She swallowed a lump, her mind conjuring an image of a similar scene, only between her and Ancalagon. Her cheeks reddened and she jerked back, stepping on a twig which alerted the two older dragons who stopped their passion to snap their gazes over at her.
Stargazer's wings immediately wrapped around his mate, covering their lower regions and Almandine gave the stunned young female a wink.
See something you like there Saffy? She teased and the older dragons laughed at the horrified expression on Saphira's face.
I think you broke her, love. Stargazer laughed while burying his snout into Almandine's neck.
Saphira soon snapped out of it and turned away. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to intrude! I-I just heard roaring and came to investigate! And… and… She couldn't finish her sentence, not even wanting to dare glancing at the couple.
Saw us mating. Almandine finished while chuckling. She gave Stargazer a pointed look and he groaned before extracting himself from her, making her shiver, before she rolled onto her feet but his wing was still around her so Saphira didn't see anything… else around their lower bodies. Saphira, look at us.
At the female's stern, commanding tone, the younger female had to glance but this time she kept her eyes on their faces.
We're not mad. We should've flown further away to where we can risk no one hearing us. That was my fault, I… was a little impatient. Almandine said, glancing at her mate.
Stargazer rolled his eyes and scoffed. Just a little, eh? You call tackling me hundreds of feet in the air a littleimpatient?! The fuck you mean Alma? You acted like we haven't mated in fifty years! It's only been three days!
Yeah so? Almandine defended. I didn't see you making any moves this time around so I took advantage of th-
We've had other, more pressing matters to deal with, beautiful. Stargazer pointed out, cutting his mate off and she looked back at Saphira who was watching the two argue. Apologies, Saphira. Rest assured, we will take this a little further away next time so we can have privacy. Just… don't tell anyone, please. Keep it well hidden from your Rider… and try not to also think of it when you look at Ancalagon.
Stargazer! Almandine nudged him as Saphira's cheeks reddened.
What? It's going to happen between them eventually. Stargazer pointed out while rolling his eyes.
Saphira coughed, trying to get herself under control. She glanced at them, unable to help but think back to the sight. She knew what mating was, obviously, and her instincts would tell her everything she needed to know when the season hit. However, there was one thing she couldn't help but be curious about, especially since it was a common thing among dragons.
If I may ask… who is the dominant one between you two? She asked, her tone slightly shy of asking such a personal question.
Almandine raised a paw and tapped Stargazer's head lightly and he rolled his eyes.
He's usually the more dominant between us, if his fighting every damned thing hasn't made that cl-mmmmmm... She was cut off as Star slowly and lecherously ran his tongue up the side of her neck.
Now that you are quite finished, I think I can speak for myself. The male said while Alma just laid there silently, lost in a cloud of pure bliss. Stargazer looked to Saphira and answered her question. Yes, I am the more dominant one in our relationship. However, I am unlike most other dragon males. I have no personal issues with being on the bottom every now and then. Saphira. Let me tell you this right now. Don't be the standard push-over female. I know for a fact you're currently the dominant one between you and Michael. He's being careful and taking it cautiously. Put him in his place. Let him know that you can be gentle but also a power player. Star looked down at his mate, still lost in her euphoria, before continuing. I personally enjoy it when her weight presses down on me. It is both exhilarating and relaxing. I last for hours at a time when I let her on top and she climaxes numerous times. Isn't that right, sweetheart?
Almandine blinked and shook her head. Riiiiiii- wait what? Huh? Oh… right. Yes. You're right.
Saphira coughed, her cheeks redder than ever before. She didn't think anyone could be so… blunt about their intimate experience. But… it also gave her something to think about in the secret corners of her mind, something for when the time comes for her and Ancalagon to become official… and then the mating itself. Suggestive thoughts, brought on from Stargazer's words, began worming their way to the front of her mind but she fought them down, embarrassed.
Not to say she'd feel as such when the time comes. She knew it would and was looking forward to ensuring Michael was hers and hers alone. But as she walked back to camp, she started to think about it a lot more than usual, which caused a wave of heat to pass through her body and her cheeks reddened again.
Most male dragons were known for being rather, well, vigorous during their first time. Not only that, but during the first mating act, it would be established who the dominant partner of the pair would be, and Saphira wondered how this may affect her and Ancalagon's relationship. Despite Stargazer's words, it was known that neither she nor Ancalagon had really shown any dominance over the other. Their playful fights ended in a draw more often than not, and Ancalagon had never been assertive with her, despite being male. Well, the only time he had been was the first time he kissed her. She hadn't seen it coming, and his maw was pressed against hers, and he forced her onto her back while expressing how much he loved her.
Growling to herself, Saphira pushed the thoughts away again. The sight she saw between Stargazer and Almandine was definitely not helping.
As Saphira walked away, Stargazer and Almandine watched her go, knowing she had a lot on her mind after what she just saw. However, this also brought a certain thing to mind in Stargazer and he looked at the female beneath him who in turn raised a scaled eye ridge.
We should go further away for privacy. If Saphira heard us, I'd hate for the entire camp to wake up and come investigate when you get… louder with your roars. He said unashamedly.
True. Almandine said and the two spread their wings and took off to find somewhere further and more private to continue their intimate activities.
(Line break)
The next morning, Ancalagon woke up and yawned, mouth stretching wide open before he snapped it shut. He looked to see Saphira sleeping at his side as usual, and leaned his head down to nuzzle her awake. Time to wake up, Saphira.
Nnnnooooo… five more minutes… She grumbled tiredly, burying her face into his chest. Ancalagon huffed in amusement, then got an idea as he leaned down and slowly ran his tongue up the side of her neck. The result was… not quite what he was expecting.
Saphira snapped awake and nearly pushed him back to jump away from him, looking startled and had a red hue on her cheeks. What was… oh. Sorry, Ancalagon.
Did you have a bad dream or something? Ancalagon huffed playfully as he got to his feet. Usually you enjoy waking up with a morning lick on the neck.
S-Sorry. Saphira said, still looking embarrassed.
Well, after what transpired last night, she might be a bit… traumatized. Almandine teased as she and her mate stepped into the camp. Several deer carcasses lay draped across Stargazer's back and he flopped down.
I caught everyone breakfast, two-leggeds included. He said and motioned for the dwarves to take all but two of the deer from his back. Those two he reached his neck around and then tossed them to Ancalagon and Saphira. Breakfast is served.
Even as the deer was tossed to him, Ancalagon watched Saphira dart her eyes to the older couple and look away, cheeks reddening. However, the younger male's instincts couldn't help but connect its own assumptions as he saw her glance at Stargazer, which was all he needed to think something was wrong as he growled and stood near Saphira protectively while narrowing his eyes at the older male.
What. Happened? He demanded with a very low growl.
Oh. That isn't my place to say. Stargazer said with a smirk. Ask your significant other yourself. Communication is key in a relationship after all… is it not? Alma and I hide nothing from each other, and I can already tell, just by reading your body language, that you assumed I broke your mate-to-be. Yes?
With how she doesn't want to glance at you, and has a blush… that's far from my mind. Ancalagon growled. With the way it looked, and his own instincts rampant with autumn drawing closer, part of him thought something had happened between Saphira and Stargazer…
Let's just say she saw a bit more than what she bargained for. Stargazer chuckled, rather amused at the childish actions by the young dragon. No. She is still pure… Except in her mind. That shit's long gone by now.
What? Ancalagon blinked, and looked at Saphira. She didn't say anything, she merely showed him the memory while closing it off to Eragon. It was bad enough she was showing Ancalagon this, though it was to put him at ease since she knew what he was assuming. If her Rider saw… he'd be as mortified and embarrassed as she was. It probably doesn't help that he felt something off.
Ancalagon's eyes widened when he saw the memory, and his mouth dropped open before he quickly shut his eyes. Oh! God! I… you… I don't want to see that!
Almandine broke out into a fit of earth-shaking laughter, falling onto her side. Stargazer howled and fell onto his back while Arya, Eragon and the dwarves just looked on in confusion.
"What's wrong with them?" Eragon asked Ancalagon and Saphira.
Don't ask. Both of them said at the same time.
"But-"
Trust me, Eragon. You REALLY do notwant to know. Ancalagon muttered.
The two-legged companions began breaking camp, while Stargazer and Almandine got themselves under control. As Stargazer got to his feet, Ancalagon approached, looking quite apologetic.
I… I'm sorry for assuming wrong of you, Stargazer. Ancalagon said, looking at the ground. It's just… I thought…
Yeah yeah. Stargazer chuckled. I'm not that dense yet, kid. I know mistakes when they're made. You made a mistake… although it was hilarious to see your reactions to it.
Oh please… The young dragon whimpered. Don't remind me… It's already branded into my fucking brain. If my friends were here… they would be killing themselves laughing.
Oh I'm sure they would be. Almandine snorted. I know that my mate and I sure got a kick out of it!
Ancalagon shot her a look. You two get a kick out of everything! Especially from embarrassing me! What's the bloody deal?
Star and Alma looked at each other then looked at Ancalagon while speaking as one. No deal. Just humor.
Ancalagon groaned and smacked a paw to his face. It's like dealing with Nick, Peter, Anthony and Jaymes all over again.
Who? Saphira asked curiously. Wordlessly, Ancalagon showed her pictures of his best friends from his world. Oh. I see.
Yeah, we were a right group of misfits. Ancalagon snorted in amusement. Knew each other since we were children, and got into all sorts of trouble. But we had each other's backs.
Like brothers. Stargazer said.
Yeah… we did often think of ourselves as a brotherhood of brothers in all but blood. Ancalagon said, then chuckled. There was a time, when we learned Anthony was in love with a girl… and we acted as stupid as we could about it.
Do tell. Almandine said, looking interested.
It's best to just show you. Ancalagon said with a grin, and pulled them into his memories.
Ancalagon, Saphira, Stargazer and Almandine appeared in Ancalagon's mindscape, looking around, before it shifted and became like a building. They saw a group of humans bunched together around one boy, they had to be in their mid-teens at best.
"What are you listening too?" Michael asked. Saphira stared at the human version of her mate-to-be, then glanced at his dragon self.
You looked handsome as a human, just as you are as a dragon. She commented. Ancalagon smiled at her before focusing back on the scene.
"Just… songs." Anthony said, embarrassed and shy before his eyes widened when Peter picked up the CD.
"Popular love songs." he read, and everyone's eyes widened as they snapped their gazes to Anthony, who looked like he'd rather be anywhere than there right now. "Oh God, there's only one girl who's been on his mind a lot."
"Dude… you've fallen for Megan?" Jaymes asked with a growing grin.
Anthony pushed him, making him laugh."Oh shut up! It's just… she's pretty, sweet, caring, funny. Why wouldn't I fall for her?"
The boys were silent before Michael grabbed a can of beer. "You're in love. Have a beer."
Anthony looked unsure. "Guys, really, I shouldn't-"
"Shut up and drink." Michael shot him a look.
Assertive as a human, but not quite as a dragon. Almandine commented slyly.
Ancalagon rolled his eyes. I was sixteen, I hadn't matured… the death of my mother stopped any of my old tendencies of being an immature idiot.
They didn't say anything as they watched Michael pick up the CD. "What track?"
"Eight." Anthony said, opening the can and sipping it.
"Can't Smile Without You…. yep, I'm gonna need a beer too."
"We're all going to need one." Nick laughed.
Ancalagon sighed. Okay, let's end that there. I doubt you wanna see us-
No, keep it going. Almandine cut in.
Not happening. Ancalagon shook his head. He was a terrible singer, he didn't want Saphira seeing him getting drunk and singing like an idiot… even if he was told he sang well for a drunk idiot… who really needed a girl.
God, he missed his friends.
Ancalagon expelled them from his mind.
Spoilsport! He heard Almandine shout and rolled his eyes.
(Line break)
Not much really happened on the journey. Ancalagon and Saphira spent more time in the air than the ground, playfully chasing and nipping each other, occasionally swimming together alongside the rafts.
The only unfortunate and bad thing that happened this day was Eragon was subject to another severe attack from the wound on his back. Ancalagon and Saphira could not do anything to relieve him of his pain, only share it. Saphira shared her Rider's pain, and through her Ancalagon felt it as well.
After what seemed like hours, Eragon finally opened his eyes and gasped for breath. He was held tightly by Saphira, who had curled around him protectively, trying to keep him from hurting himself further. Several feet away, Ancalagon laid, watching on sadly before he looked as Stargazer and Almandine joined him with Arya.
Is there any way to heal him of that wound? Ancalagon asked hopefully, not wanting to see his friend and Saphira's Rider in pain.
All eyes turned to the ancient dragons who had been oddly quiet.
Well? Saphira demanded. Is there a way to heal him or not?
Stargazer and Almandine locked eyes for a few moments and then stood up. They made their way over to the Rider who was shivering on the ground and Stargazer leaned down and looked upon Eragon with one brilliant eye.
Your road is long and treacherous, Rider. He rumbled. Do not give up hope. Take heart in those around you.
The ancient male then straightened and began striding northward, continuing on their path.
So that's it? Ancalagon snarled at their backs, making them freeze. You're just going to leave him to suffer? Like my paren-
He was cut off by a crystal tail striking him across the face and a terrifying roar. He looked up and saw Stargazer standing tall while Almandine lowered her gaze to the ground, tears streaming from her eyes and a paw pressed against her chest. The ancient dragon slowly tread toward Ancalagon, his steps silent and methodical.
Do NOT snap at me, boy. Stargazer hissed, his eyes burning with rage. Thunder boomed and rumbled around the area as the skies darkened overhead. A low ominous howl of the wind was heard as it began whipping over the plains. You have no idea what it would cost us to heal him. You KNOW how he can be healed and what he can benefit from it. Shame on you. Shame on you for questioning those who gave you a second chance! Michael saw stars and his vision flickered as Stargazer struck him across the face with the back of a paw. When his vision cleared, he was lying on the ground while nose to nose with an extremely angered ancient male dragon above him. Do not make me doubt why I chose you, boy. You have broken my mate's heart and have thus shattered any respect I held in you. Now you will have to earn it back.
Stargazer whirled away and glared at Saphira, who lowered her head into a submissive position.
And you. The crystal dragon addressed Saphira and she whimpered in fear. You are fine. Your concern is understandable and I appreciate you not demanding anything from myself and Almandine directly. He took a glance at the black-scaled dragon still sprawled on the ground behind him before he softened his gaze and turned back to Saphira. I do care for him, you know. I just won't tolerate that level of disrespect. I'm sure you understand. If not… ask your Rider. He'll know.
Ancalagon got to his feet, well aware of the many eyes on him. But he did not look at any of them, he growled and took off into the air with a mighty flap of his wings. Everyone watched him go. Saphira watched worriedly and wanted to go, but her Rider needed her.
Leave him. Stargazer said with a sigh. He needs to cool down.
"No…" Eragon fought through the pain and looked up at Saphira. "He needs you. Go after him. You're the only one who he'll listen to right now. I'll be fine, I promise."
Saphira stared at him worriedly then leaned down and gave him a comforting lick, then she took off after the black-scaled male.
Fucking children… Stargazer muttered while, much to everyone's shock, curling around the fallen Rider. Rest, Eragon. You are safe.
(Line break)
Ancalagon flew quite a distance away, but not too far. He had to get away. The feeling he felt when being… lectured by Stargazer, it was different. Tears whipped at his eyes but he forbade them from falling. This was all too much, he had to do something. He could feel the anger, the rage building and needed to take care of it before he faces everyone again… because he may not stop himself from attacking Stargazer.
Landing in a small clearing, trees all around, Ancalagon just remained completely still before spotting a nearby river and approaching it. He looked at his reflection, at the black-scaled, orange-golden eyed dragon staring back at him. He also saw the slight signs of a wound inflicted from Stargazer's attack.
And his anger reached its boiling point.
With a powerful roar that scared birds and any other nearby animal, Ancalagon whirled around and slashed several trees down, ripping them out of the earth with his mouth and tossing them like twigs. His tail lashed out and sent more trees toppling, his talons slashed, clawed, sending bits of wood everywhere. His chest then glowed, traveled up his neck, and he unleashed a rage of fire at the trees.
Ancalagon! He heard Saphira's voice but ignored her as she landed. Michael-
Don't! Ancalagon said and continued venting his emotions. Who the hell is he to scold me?! To lecture me?! Who the hell is he to act like that when I've been on my own for months without contact! It took until I destroyed an entire city for him to finally contact me! To let himself be known! All I wanted was for Eragon to be healed of his pain, and he lectures me for it?! He says he's lost all respect for me? Why should I care for having his respect?! HE IS NOT MY FATHER!
At least he is trying… Came another feminine voice, no more than a whisper.
Saphira turned and saw Almandine standing there, in the wreckage of some trees that had been cut down by Ancalagon's claws. She looked at the black dragon, but he glanced away as soon as he saw who it was, a flash of guilt in his eyes upon seeing her…. But it did not make the anger fade in the least bit.
Trying… that's how it always goes, and then it doesn't. Ancalagon spat bitterly, tearing another tree out of the ground.
And yet… he is still there, yes? The pained expression on Almandine's face was as visible as it was in her voice. He took it upon himself to watch over your loved one's companion while she came here, to help you. And now you refuse to listen to her?
Oh, he's there. Ancalagon scoffed, trying to ignore her words. He didn't want to see how pained Saphira must be, seeing him like this. It probably reminds her of Gil'ead. Until he decides to just up and fuck off like my real father did! But you know what? I don't care! I got by for nearly twenty years without my birth father, who walked out before I was even born! I got by when all I had was my mother! I led a good life for myself without having to ask him for advice or look to him for an example! He wasn't there! Neither was Stargazer, who claims he's been watching me all my life! Neither he nor my father were there when Mom took me to my first parent's evening! He wasn't there when I first crushed on a girl! When I learned how to shave! When I had my first alcoholic drink! I learned how to fight without them! I had seventeen great birthdays without either of them! My dad didn't even send me a damn card! They weren't there for me when my mother passed! I had no father in my life! I was alone! TO HELL WITH HIM! It was unclear to who the 'him' was directed towards. Ancalagon's breathing faded until he was shaky, like he was trying to hold in sobs. And when he spoke again, his voice was quiet, almost child-like, as he asked brokenly. … How come he didn't want me?
I… cannot answer that, and neither can my mate. Almandine replied softly. I know this is… new for you… and you have a right to be angry… and as for why he didn't contact you sooner… blame me. I was the one at fault.
What? Ancalagon asked tearfully, looking at her with surprise, his tone still broken and filled with sobs.
My mate… wanted to see you after he sent me an image of you and everything you were going through… but I… I forbade him from taking any action. Almandine revealed, orange tears spilling from her eyes and sizzling in the grass below her. Star.. he… he pushedto bring you here… to give you a new life… a… a new… family. But I was afraid. Afraid that in doing so… I would lose him as well. She chuckled half-heartedly. How pathetic of me… to make you suffer when the one who wantedto help from the moment he found you… it was actually when you were eight years old. I told him that it wasn't time yet… that he needed to focus on other things that weren't… you… He loves you. He would give his life for you and now, here you are, cursing him and wishing he didn't exist… He gaveyou the body and abilities you have now, Michael. I didn't have a say in any of it. He was there when you died. He spent so much energy to make sure you made it here safe and sound… and I was off doing… nothing. Watching over the land from a distance I suppose. The ancient dragoness lowered her head in shame.
Ancalagon stared at her, feeling a torrent of emotions. He… he wasn't sure what to think anymore. He was just so lost. And here he was, staring at the one who reminded him of his mother, telling him she was the reason Stargazer never did anything before offering him a second chance. A part of him wanted to be angry… but he knew his anger truly came from the absence of his birth father, not Stargazer. He was only angry at the older male because of what happened earlier.
Almandine smirked a bit at his lost expression. If you're upset over being disciplined, just think back to those kids who pissed you off. Those are the ones who were never put in their place, never told 'no', and most of all, never scolded like you just were. The maroon female then stood and observed the wreckage around the trio. Well… these trees don't seem to be able to put up much of a fight anymore. How about we start heading back and you'll soon find out what true parenting is about? She began walking away back toward camp, leaving Saphira and Ancalagon alone.
Saphira turned her head to look at her love, who was silent as he looked at the ground. She walked up to him and he looked at her, the tears still falling. Wordlessly, she nuzzled him and he put his wing over her.
I'm sorry. He whispered to her. For ignoring you.
It's okay. She said just as softly as him. You're angry, it's understandable. Are you calm enough to return and face them? Face him?
Ancalagon sighed and nodded. I am. As angry as I was, I just…
Shh… Saphira shushed him and pressed her maw against his in a soft peck. Save your words for him. But maybe it's not words that are only needed.
Ancalagon looked at her, then nodded. The two then followed after Almandine through the wreckage of destroyed and burned trees, then took off into the air to go back to the camp.
(Line Break)
The duo landed, everyone's eyes straying to them when they did. Almandine had beat them back and was at Stargazer's side. The older male had his eyes firmly planted on Ancalagon as he approached, holding the older dragon's gaze. Saphira went to her Rider's side, nuzzling him, before sitting down to watch, her heart hammering as she looked between the two male dragons.
You done throwing your little fit now? Stargazer sighed with a bored tone in his voice.
Ancalagon stomped his impulsive anger down before it could control him again, not wanting to cause another scene just because a part of him thought he wasn't being taken seriously… but he did throw a fit. He can admit that. However, that did not stop him from being defensive about it.
I have years of built-up anger so you'll forgive me if it became too much and I needed an outlet. Ancalagon snapped, this time his tone was harsher.
Stargazer merely raised a scaly eye ridge. Oh? Is that so? Couldn't stand up and beat down on this old, brittle-boned dragon?
Ancalagon's lip curled. Don't. Push. Me.
Oh I think I hold every right to 'push you'. Stargazer countered, his tone calm. Almandine revealed the truth of why I was never there for you until recently. Believe her, I tried every trick in the book to see you. And you know what? You actually DID see me when you were a human. Three… no wait. Four times, to be exact.
Ancalagon frowned. I'm pretty sure I'd remember seeing a big dragon like you in my world. He ignored the startled looks sent to him by those who did not know of his origin.
A toothy grin formed across the muzzle of the enormous dragon seated in front of him. Oh… they weren't those types of meetings. More like… little nudges in your dreams. You see, Almandine has no power over my dream-state, therefore she cannot monitor what I do when I enter those trances. Although, now that you're beginning to realize that I wasthere, even if it was indirectly, your mind is trying to dig through your memories. Go on. Enlighten your mate-to-be on when those dreams were.
Ancalagon's eyes widened, realizing there could only be one instance. Well, several. In his childhood, when he was the most fascinated by dragons and… Oh. The dreams that came after it… the dreams of him, in all his child-like fantasies, being a dragon himself. Even during them, it felt like… it felt like there was another presence there. That there was something watching him.
Ah yes. Stargazer said, now standing directly in front of Ancalagon. Now you understand. As you now know, I was alwaysthere. I was always watching over my little one. Even if I couldn't make myself known directly, I was there. Every step of the way. Always.
Ancalagon stared at him, his body trembling which caught everyone's attention. Saphira was about to take a step forward, thinking Ancalagon was still angry, but Almandine stopped her with a look and headshake. This was between them.
Ancalagon just stared at the older male, his gaze blank just as Stargazer's. He now knew what he needed to do. The emotions were bursting forth. Without a single word, he lunged and everyone held their breath as they expected to see two males savagely fighting it out. But that wasn't what they saw, their eyes widened at what actually happened.
Ancalagon… hugged Stargazer.
I'm sorry! The younger male sobbed, all the years of a lack of a father-figure, the anger he felt at his birth father not being there for him, at not having someone, save for his mother, to look up to. It all faded away, and he clutched the only being that had been a father-figure to him in his entire life. Guilt flared within him at disappointing him and making Almandine cry, which made his heart clinch with pain. I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!
Shhhhh… Stargazer soothed, wrapping his massive, crystalized wings around the young dragon clinging to him. The light refractions from his wings caused those around the two to avert their gazes… or else risk going blind. Ancalagon was enclosed in a kaleidoscope of rainbow hues as the older dragon's wings wrapped around him and he felt warm. Not physical warmth, but of being cared for.
I didn't… I didn't mean to say… Ancalagon couldn't get the words out. I was just… so angry. When you… struck me, and said I had lost your respect… I just couldn't control myself. I couldn't help but wonder if it was how my own birth father felt about me… before I was even born. What did I do? Why didn't he want to be there for me? Why… why did I have to go through the pain alone?
I cannot answer those questions for you, Michael. Stargazer said softly nuzzling the one he brought-No, softly nuzzling HIS hatchling. The world is cruel, as is humanity. Look at me. Ancalagon did, tears streaming down his face. I cannot promise to be the best father-figure… but I will be damn sure to make an effort to be better than your birth father. He was a foolish bastard for walking out on his mate, and not knowing his son would grow to be a bright, caring young man. The way I see it… he does not deserve to be called your father.
I don't even know his name. Ancalagon muttered softly.
Then to hell with him, as you said. He doesn't hold the title of father. That title should only go to those who make sure to raise their children. Be there for them. See every moment of their lives. Stargazer said, holding Ancalagon's head up with his tail. Just as I watched yours. Now, I think there's someone else you owe an apology to for making her cry. As soft and cute as this moment is, nobody makes my mate cry and gets away with it unless they apologize… and very few have done so because I ate them.
You're an asshole, you just ruined the moment. Ancalagon said jokingly, causing the older male to laugh before he released him and stepped back. Ancalagon turned to the silent Almandine. Lady Alma, I-
It's still Alma to you. She said with her usual cheekiness, but her look was soft. Oh, quit your blubbering and come over here. Give me a hug.
He walked towards her and she pulled him into a hug, wrapping her neck around his, her wings encircling him and she hummed softly as he buried his face into her chest.
Apology accepted. She told him, nuzzling the top of his head. I'm not your mother, sweetheart, and I don't aim to replace her. But… if you see Stargazer as a father-figure, and know he wants to adopt you, then...
I'd be honored to call you mother. Ancalagon told her softly.
Mother, huh? Almandine asked with a grin. You sure you don't want to call me Mama or Mummy?
Ancalagon looked at her with a deadpanned look. I'm nearly eighteen, in human years. I'm not a child!
A cough from a certain crystal dragon caused everyone to laugh.
Yeah… I don't think you're convincing any of us here, kid.
Ancalagon shot him a look. You're never going to let this go, are you?
Nope! Stargazer winked and shot into the sky, a sonic boom caused everyone to wince as the air pressure hit them.
(Line break)
Despite the little delay they had from Ancalagon's scolding by Stargazer, and then the soft moment that happened between him and the ancient dragon couple, who admitted to wanting to be parental figures to the younger dragon, the party was back in continuing their journey to the home of the elves.
Days passed. The banks of the river were often covered with vast herds of gazelle and red deer, providing ample opportunity for the four dragons to fulfill their hunger every night. Now that they had more open air space, Eragon flew almost constantly with Ancalagon and Saphira. It was the first opportunity since before Gil'ead to spend so much time together in the air, and they never hesitated to take full advantage of it. Although quite different from Saphira, Eragon found he enjoyed flying with Ancalagon just the same (When Eragon expressed curiosity in riding a dragon that wasn't Saphira, and Ancalagon indulged him since he gave Murtagh a shot, but told him it was just a one time only deal) and the four dragons and one Rider danced across the sky as the days drifted by.
Followed the Az Ragni until it joined the Edda River, which then drifted into the unknown east. At the juncture between the rivers, they visited the dwarves' trading outpost, Hedarth, and exchanged their rafts for donkeys. Dwarves never used horses on account of their size. From Hedarth, they trekked north, going up the Edda River toward its point of origin at Eldor Lake.
Du Weldenvarden came into view within three days. The forest first appeared as a hazy ridge on the horizon, then quickly expanded into an emerald sea of ancient oaks, beeches, and maples.
Huh… for a second I thought it looked like Fangorn Forest. Ancalagon muttered to Stargazer, not that anyone, save for Stargazer and probably Almandine, would get what he was meaning which is why he said it to the ancient dragon..
A harsh hack caught his attention as Stargazer choked on a piece of the deer he was eating when the young dragon made the side remark. Swallowing, the dragon looked at the young male and said, Something festers in the heart of Middle-Earth…
Ancalagon grinned and racked his brain for a similar reference. Not all those who wander are lost.
The crystal dragon then sat straight up, spread his wings to their full length and made his eyes glow. He then roared, YOU. SHALL NOT. PASS! And struck the ground with his tail, shaking the earth beneath them all.
Ancalagon fell over laughing, and Stargazer soon joined him. Even as everyone looked at them with confusion and bewilderment, only Almandine shook her head in amusement at her boys.
Grow up, you two. She said.
Later that night, just as Eragon was about to seek his blankets, Arya appeared by his shoulder, like a spirit materializing out of the air. Her stealth made him jump; he could never understand how she moved so quietly. Before he could ask what she wanted, her mind touched his and she said, Follow me as silently as you can.
Surprised by her actions and request, the youth got to his feet and followed her as she slipped out from the ring of tents, carefully evaded Tríhga, who had taken the first watch, and passed beyond the dwarves' hearing. Once they found the dragons laying where they had been, which was enough privacy, Arya proceeded to explain that there were certain customs and mannerisms they must be aware of before reaching Ceris or Ellesmera. She explained that above all else, elves held courtesy in the highest regard, and many of their ways of speaking reflected as such.
What of us? Saphira asked once Arya was done explaining. Do these customs apply to Ancalagon and myself?
No. Stargazer shook his head. As dragons, none are higher than you in elven culture. Not even the queen would dare claim authority over you, correct? He looked at Arya with a stern gaze as he said this, and she nodded in agreement.
"Indeed. However… I cannot say Ancalagon will be received with full open arms." Arya mentioned with a subtle wince. "Given that the news of Gil'ead's destruction has spread, and with different tales told, there may be some… less than welcoming reactions to you."
It's just like Tarnag again. Ancalagon groaned.
Peace, Ancalagon. Almandine stepped forward and nuzzled him. If they know better, they will not insult a live dragon to his face.
No… they won't. Stargazer growled softly before looking at Arya. Why are his actions for destroying a wretched city of the King's talked with fear and even disgust?
Arya sighed. "Some fear him simply because he shares almost a resemblance to the King's beast, Shruikan. And the destruction of Gil'ead showed his power and strength, even I do not know what to think as I did not see it for myself. But I know Ancalagon is not a monster like some are thinking him to be. It's the loss of innocent lives that causes the fear and disdain towards him."
And considering that I still don't remember, but only saw nothing but flaming ruins… no doubt some fear I could snap and repeat it again. Ancalagon sighed. The fear is… understandable.
But unwarranted to be held against you forever. Stargazer growled, then looked at Arya with a stern, angry look but the anger was not directed at her. Arya, while I respect you and hold you higher than I hold most of your kind, they have not earned the same. If they so much as treat my son like the dwarves at Tarnag did… then they will wish Galbatorix did find them and wipe them out instead, for I would make their pain and suffering last an eternity. And seeing as elves can live long lives, that makes it better.
"I… I understand, Lord Stargazer." Arya bowed her head. She knew to not challenge the older male, who has been around for thousands of years, and was well respected amongst the Varden and even by the elves, despite his own thoughts on them. She could only hope they would have no complications when they reach the capital.
(Line break)
At dusk on the fourth day since leaving Hedarth, the company came across a small meadow set between the river and the forest. Arya told them to stop and wait, and she walked forward to the middle of the lush grass. There, she called out in the ancient language to unseen figures hidden beneath the trees, identifying herself and those whom she was with.
Eragon, as well as Ancalagon since he was seeing this for himself rather than reading it in a book, stared with wonder and even amazement, though that was mainly from Eragon while Ancalagon held his amazement with restraint.
At the sight of Ancalagon, Saphira, Stargazer and Almandine, the elves cried out in alarm and aimed their weapons towards them. Arya spoke quickly in soothing tones, motioning first at Saphira, then at Eragon. When she paused for breath, Eragon drew back the glove on his right hand, tilted his palm so that the gedwëy ignasia caught the moonlight, and addressed them in the ancient language as well, remembering his lessons from the previous night.
The elves lowered their weapons as their angled faces lit up with radiant joy. They pressed their forefingers to their lips and bowed to Saphira and him, murmuring their reply in the ancient language.
Arya then gestured to the three wild dragons and said something in elvish, to which made the eyes of the elves widen before they bowed. Actually bowed at the waist, to the three.
What's that about? Ancalagon asked Stargazer.
Like I said, some elves I hold in good regard, others I do not. Myself and Almandine are respected figures to some, so this is not a surprise. At least you won't get backhanded insults from these wood-elves… can't say the same for the ones in the capital.
Then the elves rose, pointed at the dwarves, and laughed as if at a hidden joke. Drifting back into the forest, they waved their hands and called, "Come, come!"
Eragon and the dragons followed Arya, while the dwarves were grumbling under their breath, into the forest to where several huts were gathered at the base of a large tree. There, they were treated to a hastily prepared meal of fruits and vegetables. The elves seemed to revel in the dragons' presence, as some basked in amazement at Ancalagon's scales, the same with Stargazer's. One even went so far as to clean a patch of dirt off Ancalagon… and then suddenly he was subjected to a… bath.
I can get used to this. Ancalagon grinned jokingly as he laid down, just allowing the elves to do what they wanted.
I can't let them clean mine... Stargazer grumbled. I'd just end up blinding everyone.
Shame. They really know how to get the best parts. Ancalagon said as he was scrubbed. Really should pay close attention to my state.
Oh, is that you saying you need a bath every now and then? Almandine asked with a glint as Ancalagon stiffened. If you want, I could-
No… no… I said it once and I'll say it again. I'm an adult, not a child. Ancalagon said quickly, knowing what she was suggesting. What was this, the Lion King?
Shame. Almandine shrugged then leaned over and started licking her mate's scales. Care for a bath, my dear?
Only because it's you. Stargazer said, sighing quietly and in content as his mate's tongue glided across his scales.
Feeling a nudge, Ancalagon looked and saw Saphira looking at him. When will you give me mine? She asked playfully.
Ancalagon rolled his eyes. I do that practically every morning, don't push it.
The next morning, the party bid farewell to their dwarven guards, as the elves pledged to see Eragon and the others to Ellesmera. Boarding exquisite boats that seemed to have been shaped from very thin bark, the group began paddling through Eldor Lake and then into the Gaena River.
The days seemed to pass in the blink of an eye for everyone. They traveled through the Gaena River until they reached Ardwin Lake, where they were forced to portage the boats for a distance before reentering the water. On the western shore of the lake lay the elven city of Silthrim, the last city to pass before reaching Ellesmera. As they neared a ridge leading down to the clear lake, Arya pulled Eragon aside and motioned for the dragons to follow.
"As I had said the other night, the queen must be the first to know of your existence. This close to Silthrim, we will encounter many elves, and as such, we will need to ensure you are not seen until we reach the capital." Arya explained that the arrival of a Rider would be a great change to the stability of the elven kingdom, one that could only be overseen by the queen herself. "Unfortunately, this means the dragons will have to hide themselves, until we pass Silthrim."
Well... there is a way around this issue... Stargazer said, drawing their attention.
There is? Ancalagon looked at him, confused.
Alma and I could warp Saphira and you to the outskirts of Ellesmera...
Uh… I don't think that would be a good idea. We'll end up startling them. Ancalagon pointed out. We can wait. Patience is a virtue after all.
Something you sorely lack in, little one. The older male joked.
Hey! First off, I am patient. I dare you to name one instant where I wasn't patient. Secondly. What's the worst that can happen just by waiting? Ancalagon asked.
Stargazer looked at him blankly. What's the term your kind uses? Oh yes, you jinxed it.
Ancalagon scoffed playfully. You're paranoid.
As Arya helped repack the boats, Eragon helped the dragons find a place to bed down in the woods nearby. They settled on a dry hollow rimmed by crumbling rocks and blanketed with a bed of pine needles that were pleasantly soft underfoot.
I suppose we wait. Stargazer sighed, shooting Ancalagon a look but he shrugged.
Go on, Eragon. We'll be fine. Saphira said, nuzzling her Rider and giving him a lick as well.
Eragon hugged her neck—careful to avoid her sharp spines—and then reluctantly departed, glancing backward.
And then it was us. Almandine commented, laying down with Stargazer joining her. I suppose we could rest until…
Do you guys hear that? Ancalagon asked with a frown, his superior hearing picking up something. It sounded like whispering on the winds. He strained to hear the voices that seemed to be drifting from the nearby elven city. The voices rose in intensity and strength until it felt as if the entire forest was beginning to sing. The air itself seemed to shimmer with the fabric of the haunting melodies.
Oh no. Stargazer's eyes widened, and he shared a look with Almandine.
Why is everything going so… Ancalagon trailed off as a haze seemed to cover over his vision. Whatever this was… he liked it. It set off a heat through his veins. Brought forth a deep desire. He turned his head and looked at Saphira, who snapped her gaze to his. There was no logic or reason in their eyes, they looked consumed by something.
Ancalagon growled lowly as he got to his feet. All he felt in his mind… was the desire to please Saphira. To make her his. To no longer wait. He crouched low, as did she, the two just about to lunge and give in to their desires.
STEELE YOURSELVES! Stargazer roared as he got between them, causing them to collide with him. However, that did not deter the two younger dragons as they clawed at him to try and get to the other.
Get out of my way! Saphira growled. I will no longer deny it! I will no longer wait!
Agreed! Ancalagon growled.
Stargazer looked at Almandine, who looked delightfully amused. Help?
Hmm… no, it's so nice to see two younglings so in love with each other. She said with a wink.
Stargazer groaned, from the mix of annoyance at his mate… and also the two younger dragons biting and clawing at him as they tried to get past and at each other. He rolled his eyes before he grabbed them by their heads and slammed them into each other hard enough to knock them out cold.
There. That should help. He said, then shot a look at the giggling maroon dragoness. Not funny. Should've realized it was Dagshelgr. It explains why these two wanted to get at each other. A good thing I stopped them or else things would be bad for them afterwards.
Almandine scoffed. Are you going to be like that when the mating season hits? It's soon, and they will not be able to resist their instincts and desires for each other.
Of course I'm not. Stargazer rolled his eyes at her, then he chuckled. But if this is how they are during an elvish mating season… I wonder what they'll be like during ours.
(Line break)
Eventually, the dragons met back up with their two-legged companions, although Saphira and Ancalagon looked embarrassed after being told what they tried to do. Almandine didn't help when she bluntly told them they tried to 'get at each other like they were the only pieces of meat in the world… and it was a different kind of hunger they had'.
It didn't help, in Ancalagon's mind, that a stray thought mentioned that if Saphira was as aggressive as he had been, then he'll be quite busy during the mating season.
Hours passed as they traveled through Du Weldenvarden, so long that Ancalagon kinda wished to see open fields or even the mountains again, instead of the endless trunks and underbrush. As they moved deeper and deeper into the forest, the trees became larger and thicker, some measuring over two hundred feet high. Arya told them it was a sign that they were close to Ellesmera, as the trees here were among the oldest in the entire forest. She warned them that they had already triggered certain wards that protected the elven capital, and that must stay on the path they traveled.
It took all of Ancalagon's will to not break the silence with another Lord of the Rings joke.
In late afternoon, the gloom lifted to reveal an elf standing before them, sheathed in a brilliant ray of light that slanted down from the ceiling. He was garbed in flowing robes, with a circlet of silver upon his brow. His face was old, noble, and serene.
Gilderien! It is good to see you again, old friend. Stargazer said, getting the elf's attention and his face lit up to that of delight and even joy.
"Stargazer! It has been so long since I last saw you!" He laughed, stepping forward as Stargazer lowered his head and allowed the elf to embrace his snout. Gilderien stepped back, though his hand was still on the dragon's snout. "Still causing trouble and being a right pain?"
Stargazer snorted. You know me.
The elf looked to the dragon's companions and smiled when he saw Almandine. "How are you doing, Alma? You still at this idiot's side?"
Stargazer huffed while Almandine chuckled as she leaned her head down to nuzzle Gilderien in greeting. It's good to see you too, Gilderien. And yes, I'm still at his side as always. For I never want to be anywhere else. We've been busy.
"Yes, I see." the elf said as he spotted Ancalagon and Saphira, raising his eyebrows. Arya looked at Eragon, who held up his palm to show the gedwëy ignasia, as well as Brom's ring. Saphira stood behind Eragon, to make it clear she was his dragon as he was her Rider. Gilderien nodded and looked at Ancalagon, humming before he smirked at the two ancient dragons.
"All those years of trying have finally paid off, I see." He said.
Stargazer and Almandine shared a look. Not exactly. The male started.
He's to be ours through adoption. Almandine explained, causing Gilderien's eyes to widen before he looked at Ancalagon and hummed.
"Well, he's going to need all the luck in the world with you two as his parents. He'll be tearing his head off at some point." The elf joked.
They've already tested my patience countless times. Ancalagon said jokingly with a playful glare at his… unofficial adoptive parents. Almandine just winked at him in response.
Gilderien chuckled then gestured for them to pass. "Come. We'll have to catch up later, Stargazer."
Looking forward to it. Stargazer said.
Gilderien closed his eyes, and spread his arms in a gesture of welcome. He held the posture.
"The way is clear," said Arya. At a soft command, her steed moved forward. They rode around the elf—like water parting at the base of a weathered boulder—and when they had all passed, he straightened, clasped his hands, and vanished as the light that illuminated him ceased to exist.
Who is he? asked Saphira, looking to Stargazer and Almandine.
He is Gilderien the Wise. Prince of House Miolandra, wielder of the White Flame of Vándil, and guardian of Ellesméra since the days of the war between the elves and dragons. Stargazer explained. He is also one of my oldest friends. I'll tell you more later, when we're settled in. It's best to not keep the Queen waiting.
A quarter of a mile beyond, the forest thinned and breaks appeared within the canopy, allowing planks of mottled sunlight to bar the way. Then they passed underneath two burled trees that leaned against each other and stopped at the edge of an empty glade.
The ground was strewn with dense patches of flowers. From pink roses to bluebells and lilies, spring's fleeting treasure was heaped about like piles of rubies, sapphires, and opals. Their intoxicating aromas attracted hordes of bumblebees. To the right, a stream chuckled behind a row of bushes, while a pair of squirrels chased each other around a rock.
One tree bulged at the base to form a two-story house before sinking its roots into the loam. Both stories were hexagonal, although the upper level was half as small as the first, which gave the house a tiered appearance. The roofs and walls were made of webbed sheets of wood draped over six thick ridges. Moss and yellow lichen bearded the leaves and hung over jeweled windows set into each side. The front door was a mysterious black silhouette recessed under an archway wrought with symbols.
Another house was nestled between three pines, which were joined to it through a series of curved branches. Reinforced by those flying buttresses, the house rose five levels, light and airy. Beside it sat a bower woven out of willow and dogwood and hung with flameless lanterns disguised as galls.
Each unique building enhanced and complemented its surroundings, blending seamlessly with the rest of the forest until it was impossible to tell where artifice ended and nature resumed. The two were in perfect balance. Instead of mastering their environment, the elves had chosen to accept the world as it was and adapt themselves to it.
The inhabitants of Ellesméra eventually revealed themselves as a flicker of movement at the fringe of Eragon's sight, no more than needles stirring in the breeze. Then he caught glimpses of hands, a pale face, a sandaled foot, an upraised arm. One by one, the wary elves stepped into view, their almond eyes fixed upon the dragons, Arya and Eragon.
And so begins the staring. Ancalagon grumbled under his breath. Did they have to stare? He knew elves practically worshipped dragons… which was still ironic considering both species were at war a long time ago, but it was still annoying. One would think a dragon would be flattered by the stares of awe and respect, but Ancalagon knew the looks at him, while filled with awe, were also filled with fear.
If they continue to stare… they will anger ME! Stargazer showed his displeasure with a loud growl at the staring elves, causing them to quickly dart away and hide. He snorted, not really satisfied, but it was enough. They continued on their way.
Arya proceeded along a cobblestone path set with bits of green tourmaline, which looped among the hollyhocks and the houses and the trees before finally crossing a stream. The elves danced around their party as they walked, flitting here and there as the fancy struck them, laughing, and occasionally leaping up onto a branch to run over their heads. They praised Saphira with names like "Longclaws" and "Daughter of Air and Fire" and "Strong One."
I don't think I even want to know the names they'll call me here. Ancalagon muttered to Almandine.
Just ignore them, sweetheart. They'll push their luck until either I or Stargazer puts them in their place. She said with an angered growl at how the elves were making her hatchling feel uneasy just because of his past actions.
The path ended at a net of roots that formed steps, like bare pools of earth. They climbed to a door embedded within a wall of saplings. Eragon's heart quickened as the door swung open, seemingly of its own accord, and revealed a hall of trees. Hundreds of branches melded together to form the honeycombed ceiling. Below, twelve chairs were arrayed along each wall.
In them reclined twenty four elf lords and ladies.
Wise and handsome were they, with smooth faces unmarked by age and keen eyes that gleamed with excitement. They leaned forward, gripping the arms of their chairs, and stared at Eragon's group with open wonder and hope. Unlike the other elves, they had swords belted at their waists—hilts studded with beryls and garnets—and circlets that adorned their brows.
And at the head of the assembly stood a white pavilion that sheltered a throne of knotted roots. Queen Islanzadí sat upon it. She was as beautiful as an autumn sunset, proud and imperious, with two dark eyebrows slanted like upraised wings, lips as bright and red as holly berries, and midnight hair bound under a diamond diadem. Her tunic was crimson. Round her hips hung a girdle of braided gold. And clasped at the hollow of her neck was a velvet cloak that fell to the ground in languid folds. Despite her imposing countenance, the queen seemed fragile, as if she concealed a great pain.
By her left hand was a curved rod with a chased crosspiece. A brilliant-white raven perched on it, shuffling impatiently from foot to foot. He cocked his head and surveyed Eragon with uncanny intelligence, then gave a long, low croak and shrieked, "Wyrda!" Eragon shivered from the force of that single cracked word.
The door closed behind the six of them as they entered the hall and approached the queen. Arya knelt on the moss-covered ground and bowed first, then Eragon, Orik, Lifaen, and Narí. Even Saphira, who had never bowed to anyone, not even Ajihad or Hrothgar, lowered her head. Ancalagon seemed to follow, but caught his adoptive father's eye and Stargazer shook his head, telling him not to.
You are a wild dragon. You bow to no one. Stargazer told him sternly.
Islanzadí stood and descended from the throne, her cloak trailing behind her. Here we go. Eragon, Ancalagon and Saphira thought in unison.
She stopped before Arya, placed trembling hands on her shoulders, and said in a rich voice, "Rise." Arya did, and the queen scrutinized her face with increasing intensity, until it seemed as if she were trying to decipher an obscure text.
At last Islanzadí cried out and embraced Arya, saying, "O my daughter, I have wronged you!"
B.W.- Okay, first off, I just want to say, that bit with Stargazer and Almandine getting… busy… IT WAS ALL STRYKER'S FAULT!
S.S.- Whose story is this though? Hmmm?
B.W- Well, mine, but you came up with the idea! As brief of a… sex scene as it was, it'll catch people off guard.

B.W.- What? I'm just saying it's unexpected and out of nowhere. This story is Rated M, so they should expect this kind of stuff with me. Also, do you think most of them need tissues for their eyes after Ancalagon's reveal of father issues?
S.S.- Nah. Also... jesus fucking christ. 12.5k+ words.

B.W.- No. It costed me a lot to have that repaired. It's not even fully paid off yet!
S.S.- Then be quiet. *snarls* Mutt.
B.W.- Dick. Anyway, I'm gonna chill on the couch. Been working on this one for hours and I'm exhausted. Like he said, everyone, review, favorite and be sure to follow. PEACE OUT! *Walks off*
