He stood at the graveside.
Paul ran a hand tenderly over the largest headstone. A large book-shaped marble was the centre with several smaller stones around it. They varied in design, mostly small hearts and adorned with flowers.
There were names on them all.
Lady Dianne Simms-Metcalfe.
Beloved Wife and Mother.
Adam Rick Simms-Metcalfe
Penelope Simms-Metcalfe-Svenson
The list went on.
His wife.
His childen.
Grandchildren.
Great-Grandchildren.
And still Paul lived on. The hole in his heart would never heal. It just kept getting larger. And larger. But…
'Gran'pa! Gran'pa!'
A small hand grasped his and Paul picked up the current youngest of his Great-Great-Grandchildren.
Charlie grasped him around the neck and bestowed a wet kiss on his cheek. Paul hugged her tighter as he lay down the large bunch of flowers and then the two made their way back to the car where Charlie's parents were waiting with her elder twin brothers Scott and Troy.
The whole family were gathered and waiting, and Paul got into the lead car with Charlie on his lap as they headed back for the wake.
Afterwards the family gathered around him, the younger ones around his feet and the older ones dotted around. The oldest of his family, his great-grandson Patrick, handed him a large whisky and they settled.
'Tell us about the Colour Captains and the Angels again, Grandpa!'
Paul laughed.
He may be almost immortal but he had made damn sure that his fellow captains and the angels and all their exploits would live for eternity too.

And the hole in his heart was bearable again.
