"Muriel!"
"Miss Maggie!" Muriel gasped, looking up from her book. She stood quickly from the chair seeing her friend's distressed face. "Are you alright?"
"D-Does Mr. Fell have a-any books on human… er… um…!" Maggie's face grew redder and redder as she struggled for word. "Human…"
"Human what?" Muriel asked quickly, trying to be helpful. "I've been studying humans myself so perhaps the book you're-"
The moment she pointed to the large stack of books on humans, Maggie ran to it, going through the titles one by one.
"Oh, oh, please be gentle…!" Muriel tried to say but it seemed Maggie was on a mission as she slid one book after the other behind her. "These are originally Mr. Fell's after all, I don't think he'd like you-!" She dodged another book that slid away.
Eventually, Maggie reached the end of the stack and hadn't found the human subject she was searching for. It seemed Muriel was into studying human behavior over anything else, which wasn't helpful for the current situation. She looked back to see Muriel hurriedly picking up the books and gave a whimper in dismay, "Oh, no! Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to- Here, let me help!"
"Miss Maggie!" Muriel caught the woman when a dizziness overtook her in the attempt to help. She hurried her over to a nearby chair before dashing away. "Wait right there, don't move!"
Maggie waited quietly, listening to the ticking clock. She looked around apprehensively, wondering if this was the right thing to do. She'd scoured the internet for an explanation to her problem and come up with nothing. Nothing that was scientific or fact, anyway. When she come up with nothing she resorted to the next greatest source of information she knew: Mr. Fell's shop.
"Here we are!" Muriel sang, placing a steaming cup of hot chocolate in front of her. She sat down opposite of her friend, nearly burning her tongue thanks to her forgetfulness of the human beverage.
Maggie stared down at the cup before frowning.
"Oh no! Do you not like coco?" Muriel gasped, about to spring up and take it away. She had no idea if this was normal human behavior to cry over something so small but knew she had to make it stop somehow.
"No, no." Maggie sniffed, waving her off. "It's just… Mr. Fell always makes me hot chocolate when I'm not feeling my best."
"What a coincidence! Mr. Crowley does the same for me whenever I get stressed over running the shop!" Muriel grinned, glad they had something to talk about. "… Do you miss Mr. Fell?"
Maggie gave a small nod. "Quite a bit, actually… Do you know when he'll be coming back?"
"Coming back?" Muriel nearly choked on her hot chocolate as she struggled to come with what to say. "Oh, yes! Coming back from his business trip! The business trip Crowley told you about! The business trip that's most definitely on Earth-!"
"Muriel, I saw Mr. Fell pull a halo out of his skull and used it to smite the demon army that wrecked his ball…"
"So you know he's from…" Muriel pointed upward.
"Mmhm."
"And Mr. Crowley's from…" She turned the point downward.
"Yes."
Muriel placed her cup down nervously. "Oh. Oh dear…"
There was an awkward silence between them before Maggie cleared her throat.
"It's okay, Nina and I aren't going to tell anyone." The woman promised.
"Oh, but now I'm worried I'll slip up my own identity!" Muriel moaned in worry.
"Not possible, your human disguise is immaculate, We would've never guessed you were an angel if Crowley hadn't told us." Maggie reassured her. This wasn't true in the slightest, it was rather obvious Muriel wasn't from Earth given her unfamiliarity with nearly everything on it but a little white lie never hurt anyone.
"Really? I wondered if I was convincing enough!"
Crowley got out of the Bentley after turning off the blaring Queen music. He was only two hours late for volunteer work at the store. He was sober too. Given his current mood about all that had been going on, that was a miracle in itself.
He paused before entering as a familiar face walked up with a sweet-smelling bag in one hand and a coffee in the other.
"Nina! Fancy meeting you here!" He grinned.
The woman gave a slight smile. "Well I am just across the way and my shift just ended so I thought I'd pop over and see how Maggie's doing."
"I've been wondering how she's been doing." Crowley nodded, letting her in first. "The record shop's been closed for a bit now. Is everything-"
He halted at seeing the book scattered around the floor. His eyes narrowed in annoyance. "Cherub, I told you you can't just leave books laying around! Aziraphale would lose his head if he saw this! We've got to keep it up to snuff till he gets back."
He quickly miracled the books back in place after quickly checking there were no creases.
"Sorry, Crowley." Maggie smiled weakly, getting up. The worry came back as she remembered she still needed answers. "That was me."
"How are you feeling?" Nina asked, giving her a squeeze as she set down the bag of sweets on the table. She quickly looked over to Muriel. "Ah! Those are to share."
Muriel looked slightly disappointed that the bag wasn't all for her like it usually was. "Fine…"
Crowley didn't pay much attention as the couple chatted for a few moments, mainly focused on sitting down on the usual armchair and getting some eccles cakes before Muriel could get to them.
Soon enough, Maggie and Nina joined them with the former looking quite stressed.
"You okay, love?" Crowley asked, raising an eyebrow. He'd taken it upon himself to keep an eye on her in Aziraphale's steed. Poor girl could wind herself up nearly as much as his angel could, so the two of them had made sure she knew the shop was always open for her if she needed it.
Maggie shook her head, tears coming to her eyes. "I just- I came here to get a book because- It's so embarrassing to say out loud!"
Nina let her lean onto her. "You'd better just tell them, angel. They'd figure it out sooner or later."
"Figure out what?" Muriel asked, looking between them and Crowley.
The demon shrugged, he had no clue what had she'd be so scared of telling them, or at least him since he'd always been at the shop during her and Aziraphale's tea times.
"I thought it might be a cold at first." Maggie started softly. "But then I started getting more and more dizzy spells and morning sickness…"
"I said she ought to take a test." Nina added on.
"Oh." Crowley mumbled in surprise. But hadn't the two of them only been dating for a couple months now? Surely it was too soon to be thinking about… that. But then again, he couldn't see sweet Maggie cheating on Nina either, not after how long she'd pined after her. "Wow."
"Every single one was positive. B-But I can't… I don't know if I should..."
"Congratulations, Maggie!" Muriel suddenly clapped, breaking the solemn mood. "That's wonderful! What subject was it?"
"Sorry?" Nina asked.
"What subject was the test on?" Muriel smiled innocently.
"Oh bugger." Crowley whispered, realizing the miscommunication. He turned to the angel. "Cherub do you… do you remember how humans can have offsprings?"
"Yes, of course." Muriel smiled.
"And, uh… do you know how that happens?"
"Mr. Crowley!" Muriel gasped, blushing. "We don't discuss that, it is a very intimate act, pulling the man's rib out!"
Nina nearly spit up her coffee in surprise.
"Right. Forgot they taught you. That's… That's how it works." Crowley muttered quickly, relieved he didn't have to say more on the matter. "See, humans made these tests to check if the… act was successful or not to know if… well…"
Muriel dropped her cup in shock before gasping in delight. She rushed over to Maggie, clasping her hands. "Oh, Miss Maggie! How absolutely wonderful! A baby! You're having a baby!"
Maggie gave a whimper before bursting into tears.
"What's the matter?" Muriel asked in concern, backing away.
"I don't know if I can even be a mother!" Maggie sobbed in panic. "And it doesn't even make sense how I am, it's impossible!"
Crowley tensed at that. "What do you mean, impossible?"
"Well, I've never…" Maggie couldn't finish, too embarrassed.
"You're a virgin…"
"Yes! So how?! How can I be pregnant?!"
Crowley felt himself shake with rage, finally letting it sink in.
They'd chosen the second human mother of the Almighty's son.
