FRANK
The flash drive arrived two days after Frank and the rest of the legion had settled into New Rome.
He had been busy with his new praetor duties, running around solving problems and giving orders. But the role fit him better than anything else had. Hazel, as a centurion, had also been really busy, so they hadn't had much time later.
Now, however, Hazel and he sat in the same room, watching their good friend Jason hold out two metal drives, one with each of their names on them. Frank recognized Leo's messy scrawl immediately in the sharpie'd names, and felt a twinge of grief. It was odd to hear Jason trying not to cry.
It was even more odd whenever he referred to Leo in the past tense.
Leo wasn't in the past. Was he?
"He left them in Festus, then told Festus to go to Ogygia." Jason explained. "Calypso brought the rest back to us. I don't really know what's on them…"
"You haven't watched yours yet?" Hazel asked.
Jason shook his head, hand drifting toward his pants pocket. "I wanted to make sure you got yours first."
Frank didn't know how to feel about the whole situation. He had known Leo was dead for two weeks. He hadn't been expecting a goodbye. Even if he'd known Leo had left something like that behind, he wouldn't have thought he would get one. Hazel and Jason and Piper and Annabeth, sure… but not Frank.
As Frank took the flash drive a weight settled not only into his palm, but also down deep within him. It somehow solidified that Leo was gone, never coming back.
It was shocking how much that hurt.
RECORDING- FRANK
LEO: Hi. If you're watching this, I'm dead. Super dead. That's still weird to say, even if I've accustomed myself to it.
LEO: I know we weren't the closest. I know you're Roman, I know you're used to loss and sacrifice. You'll probably move on fast. But I do want to tell you a few things. This is going to be real sweet and short, I don't have time for ushy gushy feelings and the like.
LEO: The first thing I want to say is thank you. For not throwing me off the ship as soon as I started hitting on your girlfriend. That was a super awkward situation for all of us, and I feel bad that our first few weeks together were like that. I wish I could have gotten to know you a little better.
LEO: Also, thanks for being… you, I guess. You're a great guy. Real sweet, or whatever. I blame the fact that you're Canadian on how polite you are. You're gonna make an awesome praetor, and I don't think I told you that enough, but you're kind of amazing. I'm a little jealous of you, to be honest. You can turn into all these animals, you're totally buff, you've got great aim, you're, like, the best boyfriend…
LEO: So I'm sorry if I ever made you feel inferior. The second thing I want to tell you is a little more serious. That fireproof pouch I gave you, if it ever stops working or breaks somehow, find Calypso. She'll make you another one.
LEO: Anyways. We've got a meeting soon, and I still haven't filmed Jason's or Hazel's, so I gotta go soon. Sorry yours was so short. But the third thing… it's just a goodbye.
LEO: I don't know if you'll really miss me, but I'll miss you. So goodbye.
