CH 1:
BACKGROUND INFO:
I've wanted to be a doctor ever since 7th grade. I'm so motivated to help other people. I've wanted to be a lifeguard ever since I was 9 years old. Which is why, when I was 15, not only did I get my lifeguard certification, but I also got a job working as a lifeguard. I learned a lot, I really did. And we are trained in so much in terms of first aid and stuff. That's because lifeguards are first responders. We're not EMTs, but we are first responders. I know when most people think of a first responder, they think of an EMT or a paramedic or a firefighter. But the summer between 7th and 8th grade, I went to this medical camp at a college offered for students of that age. AND I LOVED IT. So much fun, I would definitely do it again if I had the chance. They were also able to renew my BLS certification-so that was nice. A few months after that, I took the class at school where you help other students who have disabilities. I took it because I was obsessed with helping people. It felt so rewarding and that's all I wanted to do. Well one day, the kid I was assigned to helping was acting weird. What I mean by that is, he said he had a headache, was dizzy and when he was gonna stand up and I was about to take him to the office, he couldn't walk. And he fell and so then the classroom teacher called the office. His counselor (not mine, the other one) and the social worker showed up. They called my parents and I had to stop helping the kid for a few weeks. However, during parent teacher conferences, I guess the kid's parents decided I could start helping him again.
But I was salty over what had happened. I still am 4 years later (to this day). It will always be my story to tell, and it will always stick with me. When I had mentioned what had happened to the resource officer as a hypothetical situation about 3 or so years later, he said that should not have happened and that I should have been protected under the Good Samaritan law. So I've hated the counselor lady ever since. When I heard about her daughter, I hated her too, although I had never met her.
